Bigby overrated? Woodson underrated?
Good ol’ Pete Prisco did his annual over and underrated players from each team. The Packers were included of course:
Overrated: S Atari Bigby. He had some good plays down the stretch and in the playoffs. But he became a January phenomenon. If you watched him during the season, he struggled in coverage.
Underrated: CB Charles Woodson. It’s criminal that he didn’t go to the Pro Bowl last season. He was their best corner, not Al Harris, who did go to the Pro Bowl.
Now, in my opinion, Prisco is right on in these ratings. Bigby came on strong last season, winning a Defensive Player of the Week award and a Defensive Player of the Month award, but that only scratched the surface of his potential. Earlier in the season, he was burned multiple times for big games and just played like he couldn’t stick with bigger wide receivers. He improved greatly as the course of the season went on, but at the beginning of the season he was just horrible. Against the New York Giants, he recorded nine tackles, eight of them solo, but that was mainly due to the fact that the Packers defensive line and linebackers could not get to Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, and of course, Plaxico Burress destroyed Al Harris. So for now, Bigby is overrated. If he shows up this year, he’ll most likely shed that classification.
I agree wtih Prisco on Woodson as well. Woodson had more of an effect on the defense. One of the two games he missed was the 37-27 loss in Week 13 to the Dallas Cowboys. That game the Packers secondary was shredded. Add Woodson into the equation, the game would have been much closer and it would have been much harder for the Cowboys to walk all over them. Woodson has resurrected his career after coming over from the Oakland Raiders and was 100% underrated in 2007.
