Culpepper Spurns Packers

Out of work quarterback Daunte Culpepper, most recently of the Oakland Raiders, will most likely be out of work this season after reportedly refusing a one-year deal worth $1 million to backup Aaron Rodgers in 2008. Culpepper, who also spent time with the Miami Dolphins and is best known for his time with the Minnesota Vikings, was brought in to Green Bay for a physical and interview along with Gus Frerotte and Quinn Gray. Culpepper is the only one who was offered a contract. Donald Driver put some perspective on the situation:

“Daunte’s a good guy, but I guess he felt like he wanted to come in and vie for a starting spot and (the Packers) already knew who their starting quarterback was. So what do you do? They felt like if he didn’t want the title to be a backup, you have to move on.”

Culpepper would have added much needed game experience to a quarterback depth chart that has the least amount of experience in the league. Brian Brohm is set to backup Rodgers for 2008 along with fellow rookie Matt Flynn. I forget the last time I heard about two rookie quarterbacks backing up a starter. Brohm and Flynn are able bodies, no doubt about it, but if Rodgers gets hurt or can’t finish a game, or the Packers need a spot start from Brohm, will the Packers be in the best situation to win?

Too bad about Daunte.  The Packer fans really would’ve liked him.  The interceptions would’ve reminded them of Favre.

Take it from someone who has watched Brian Brohm over the last four years.  Give him a little time to really get the system down and then you couldn’t ask for a better backup.  He has all the physical tools, but his biggest strength of all is that he knows how to manage a game.

That is a great point Brian.  Last season the Packers had wanted Favre to be the game manager in the first few games.  The first few games went pretty well.  With the supporting cast, all Brohm has to do is be a game manager.  Thanks for pointing that out.

i’ll tell you that after this season you guys will have a hell of a qb controversy on your hands. my prediction is that rodgers, who seems very injury prone, will make it half the year, and brohm will step in and do a good job. he’s got the possiblity to be s star in league and you guys will start to see that. you’ll look at him as the heir apparent to farve. and rodgers won’t seem to cut it. you know why i see this? cause i’m a cowboy fan and i’ve been through it. TWICE. once when staubach retired and when aikman hung it up. it takes a while to develop a qb no matter how long he sits on the bench. he needs game time. remember when starr retired????? now farve????? see my point???? good luck to all you packer fans, be patient, he’ll come……but i’m not sure it’s rodgers. it usually is the 2nd or 3rd guy behind the legend that survives. because, he’s to close, there needs to be more time put behind them so us fans won’t continue to compare. but again i say good luck, i know well what you fans will face this year, all too well
