Derek Sherrod was the Green Bay Packers' first round 2001 draft selection.

Sherrod solid selection

Derek Sherrod was the logical pick for the Green Bay Packers tonight. As the NFL draft’s first down wound down toward the Packers’ enviable 32nd pick, it became evident that Sherrod would be selected.
Aaron Rodgers no doubt breathed a deep sigh of relief to hear Sherrod’s name called by the commissioner.
With the selection, the Packers solidified both ends of the offensive line. With another one or two offensive linemen in the second, third or fourth rounds, the Pack will add more depth and competition.
With the aging Clifton ready to step aside and Bryan Bulaga already penciled in to start next year, the Pack is positioned to showcase a line that will protect Aaron Rodgers for the next decade.
This pick also softens the blow of the Bears taking Gabe Carimi from under the Packers’ nose with their first round pick.
The pick also counters the Lions’ selection of defensive lineman Fairly … solidifying the offensive line was imperative.
Needless to say, this was an interesting first round. Highlighting the action was the blockbuster trade turned by former Packers’ coach and now skipper of the Cleveland Browns’ ship, Mike Holmgren, and the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons traded up from 27 to 6 to take wide receiver Julio Jones. In return, the Browns collected a passel of picks and set themselves up for vast improvement by as early as next year.
Can anyone say Herschel Walker?
Atlanta gave up way too much for one guy. But hey, what do I know?
So ends the first round of the 2011 draft … Stay tuned for the next six rounds. This is when it gets really interesting … This is where championship teams are built and this is where Ted Thompson has shined.
Our hope is that he shines even more brightly this year.
Tune in tomorrow for the fun.
