The matchup between the Packers and Lions will be a heated affair this Thanksgiving. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

Lions pride

It could be the kiss of death or it could be simple confidence.
Riding high off their four game winning streak at the end of last season, Detroit Lions players aren’t shy about making prognostications …
Some have gone on record saying the P word:
“I’m saying right now we’re going to the playoffs.” Those were the fightin’ words this week by Ndamukong Suh.
Is it a good thing to be going out on a limb like that – especially since it’s been since the prehistoric days that the Lions have even smelled the playoffs.
I remember back in 1996 when Brett Favre, fresh off of his stint in rehab for his addiction to vicodin, came right out and said Super Bowl or bust, much to the chagrin of then-head coach Mike Holmgren.
Of course, the team was coming off a season where they had lost to the Cowboys in the NFC championship game, so the expectations were pretty high. The Lions still haven’t come close to winning anything so they may be jumping the gun a bit.
Will the Lions be improved? Yes. will they win more games than they did last year? Probably. Will they make the playoffs? Possibly.
But in my mind, if I were that team’s head coach, I would be telling my players to shut it and start proving things on the field before making cocky statements.
Every team in the league has the same goal … Do you hear players from every team making bold predictions like that of Suh? No.
If his statement becomes reality, Suh is a genius. If he’s wrong, he’s a fool.
It will indeed be an interesting season.
