A great man Has died.
His name was John Mackey.
Oh yeah, he was also a football player … And a great one at that.
He did more to change the game of football than any player who hit the gridiron over the past 90 years.
He was to the modern era of the game what Don Hutson was to the game from which Mackey emerged.
How many times did Mackey help win games for the Baltimore Colts of the 1960s? How many times did you see the big man haul in a pass over middle, shed a couple of tacklers like swatting flies and the beat everyone to the end zone?
The man is a Hall of Famer for a reason.
He spent the final decade of his life battling dimentia, but it will be his life’s work that will be remembered.
His work on the field was legendary, but let’s also not forget how he was one of a few who played during a time of huge social and racial unrest.
It was players like him who made it acceptable for people of color to be household names and heroes.
Thanks for all you did to enrich the lives of every American.
Rest in peace, John Mackey.
Rest in peace, John Mackey
