Former Packer Leach looks to move on …

Remember Vonta Leach, Packers fans?

Well, as he’s now being called the game’s “best available” fullback by many, including Gregg Rosenthal at Pro Football Talk, Leach seems to be able to write his own ticket out of Houston, where he found a home the past four years.

His years, of course, in Green Bay were less than stellar, thus his move out of Wisconsin and transplant in Texas. In fact, while in Wisconsin he had a tough time even finding the field. He did start all 16 games in 2005, catching five balls that season for 19 yards, with his longest gain being nine yards. He didn’t carry the ball once during his time in Green Bay.

He’s done better offensively in four years in Houston, catching 33 passes for 457 yards.

Most notably, though, he has become the battering ram in leading the way for Arian Foster, last year’s leader in rushing yards. That, clearly, is his calling card.

Does he still have enough in him to demand a larger contract from teams such as the Seahawks, Giants or Chargers … the teams he identified today as possible landing sites for his services.

It’s good to see former Packers players do well, as long as its not for division foes (can you say Brett Favre?), but fans weren’t necessarily sad to see him go because the team has had a pretty solid stable of fullbacks in their own camp in Leach’s absence.

He has been an imposing player and certainly has made a name for himself in Houston and the AFC. We wish him continued success, just not against the Packers.
