Chillar's injury leaves Packers thin at inside linebacker

The news today that Brandon Chillar, who hasn’t reported yet to training camp, suffered a serious off-season hamstring injury that would leave the Packers precariously thin at the inside linebacker positions.

With Nick Barnett given his walking papers everyone thought it was a wise move because of the depth the Packers had. However, this news broke by Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is, if true, very disconcerting.

Word flying around the Internet is that the Packers may be negotiating to bring Matt Wilhelm back to the team as insurance, but it’s clear if signed he would simply be a backup and special teams player.

While A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop have proven to be very durable, we all know it only takes one hit to change the complexion at the position.

Will Chillar’s injury force the Packers to reconsider their position with Barnett? … That is an unknown at this point, but we’re sure the team wants to give Chillar an examination to check out the extent of the injury before making any moves.

Would this also be an injury that might force Thompson’s hand in gaining a player through free agency? While we doubt it, that’s also certainly not out of the question.

Remember last season when the Packers faced injury after injury? Certainly this isn’t something the team hasn’t worked through before … it’s just a bit early in the season for something like this.
