The Packers’ unofficial depth chart for the offense released Tuesday showed rookie first round pick Derek Sherrod as the starting left guard and a pile of talented tight ends fighting for a roster spot behind starter Jermichael Finley.
What it also shows is a roster filled with solid depth … A factor that has become the hallmark of Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy teams.
While Sherrod has been pegged the starting left guard since the first snap of camp, veteran TJ Lang is situated right behind him and while Andrew Quarless is penned as Finley’s backup at tight end, the logjam of talent behind those two is impressive. It also begs the question of how many tight ends will they keep and whether Spencer Havner will be utilized more on defense.
Also stacked at the wide receiver positions, it’s clear there are some players who may be auditioning for roster spots on other team’s because the packers, unfortunately, can’t keep them all.
Consider Diondre Borel and Kerry Taylor listed behind Greg Jennings; or Chastin West, Tori Gurley, Antonio Robinson and Shaky Smithson, who are all listed behind Donald Driver and Jordy Nelson.
