Back by popular demand … well maybe not … but the jersey that has been called by many as the ugliest of all NFL throwback jerseys will be worn again this season Sunday, Oct . 16, when the Packers take the field against the St. Louis Rams.
Unveiled last season when the Packers hosted the San Francisco 49ers, the navy blue jerseys that are recreations of the historic 1929 uniform worn by the franchise’s first NFL championship team, features the oversized gold circle on the chest. While many have railed on the uniforms, of course this Packers fan loves them … if for nothing else than it’s something different. I especially like the chocolate brown helmets.
The press release issued this morning by the Packers PR department says the uniform, “…will remind fans, players and all spectators of the unique history and tradition of the Green Bay Packers organization.
“The uniform includes the solid brown color helmet, without a logo, to best simulate the leather helmets worn during the era, along with tan pants, navy blue socks and black shoes.”
The press release goes on to say, “Packers coaching staff and team personnel also will be wearing the third jersey sideline apparel, which dates back to the 1920s, with many of the selections featuring ‘Acme Packers,’ the team moniker from the 1921-22 seasons.
Always one of the league’s biggest sellers in apparel, the Packers will again offer these jerseys for sale from its Pro Shop … the press release goes on to say, “… sideline apparel and other Acme Packers apparel will continue to be available at the Packers Pro Shop, both in the store and online at www.PackersProShop.com.”
I love it when the team brings back jerseys from years past. However, in keeping with the long tradition of the franchise I feel the team should wear a replica from a different team each season. Not only will it allow for the option of more for sales of varied jerseys, it would also spice up each season with something different.
But who am I to say? We’ll just follow the lead of the Packers organization on this one … and go out and buy our #12 or #21 in navy blue.
