Packers' Ted Thompson has got huge challenges ahead

This Thursday’s Packers preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs won’t mean much to the starters as Coach Mike McCarthy most likely will allow them to break a sweat and that’s about all … There’s too much evaluatin’ to do.

No doubt, McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson will utilize as much of the game to make final decisions on the likes of Pat Lee, Brandon Underwood, Nick McDonald, Tori Gurley and so many, many others who have been fighting for a roster spot with the world champs.

There are many who feel there may be some cuts even before the team hits the field Thursday night which would help in reducing the number of players McCarthy and Thompson would have to consider.

And anyone who understands the numbers the Packers and the rest of the league’s GMs face in the come few days – dropping rosters from 80 to 53 players – it’s pretty clear it’s not an easy task.

So when it comes to players like Ricky Elmore, Underwood, and Lee it’s pretty clear they are on the edge of being visited by the Turk.

However, there are some others, such as Andrew Quarless, Charlie Peprah, and Dmitri Nance whose futures are as clear as mud at this point.

And if you think Thompson is tipping his hand on whom might be out, you would be mistaken. In today’s press conference, Thompson wasn’t about to give in to the questioning by the press corps. Thompson, the master of the two- and three-word answers was at his best today.

Asked about whether the Packers fans trust his decision-making now that the team has won a championship, Thompson cited the usual platitudes about Packers fans being the best in the world, but still didn’t give anyone any idea about what’s on his mind or the decisions he’s formulating.

Until he comes clean and the team is officially down to 53 players we’ll simply have to wait.
