You might want to bring a jacket or two (or three) to Lambeau Field for the season opener against the New Orleans Saints …

No, more than likely you won’t need to wear more than one (maybe two) layers for the evening game … and the coats you bring might be some you want to give away. I know you all have those extra jackets hanging in that back closet. Dig them out, bag them up and bring them for donation to the annual Coats for Kids collection taking place prior to the game.

That ever-present organization, the Salvation Army, will be collecting the coats in the parking lot starting at 3:30 p.m. and will also be stationed at each entry to Lambeau Field with arms (and bins) open to accept whatever you would like to contribute.

Cash donations will also be accepted, of course.

Joining the Salvation Army will be FOX 11, Cumulus Broadcasting and several area cleaners, Lindeman’s Cleaning, Royal Cleaners, and Martinizing Dry Cleaning Service in sponsoring and collecting the coats. If you don’t want to bring the coats to the game, they may also be dropped off at those sponsoring cleaners. … [visit site to read more]

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy has the utmost confidence in Chad Clifton. Raymond T. Rivard photograph Today the Packers must reduce its roster from the current 83 players to 80, meaning that three more players are set to be released by mid-afternoon today, Tuesday, Aug. Aug. Most likely, the three to be let go won’t be huge surprises, but then again I always say this is the NFL, so every day is a surprise.
Today the Packers must reduce its roster from the current 83 players to 80, meaning that three more players are set to be released by mid-afternoon today, Tuesday, Aug. Aug.

Most likely, the three to be let go won’t be huge surprises, but then again I always say this is the NFL, so every day is a surprise.

But inching closer to the final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Packers have had some interesting developments in camp the past couple of days.

Highlighting those developments were the return of rookie Randall Cobb, the continued solid play of veteran Donald Driver, the comments by Coach Mike McCarthy in defending veteran left tackle Chad Clifton, and most notably, the seeming infective condition called “bruised knees.”

It was good to see Cobb back in practice, though limited by one of those so-called “bruised knees.”

How much the rookie will play Thursday will depend on how he comes along the next couple of days … most likely his play will be limited because he seems to be a lock on making the roster. … [visit site to read more]

The Packers’ pass protection – well, if you want to call it that – in fact the overall play of the offensive line, including run blocking against the Colts Friday night, was nothing short of frightful.

Raymond T. Rivard photograph

In fact one might say it was pathetic … And time is running out. Sept. 8 is just around the corner. If the Packers line doesn’t show improvement against the Chiefs in the final preseason game, there may be hell to pay when the Saints come marching in.

But as poorly as the line played overall Friday night, there were some bright spots. Rodgers did lead the team to a TD, a field goal and another drive that ended in a missed field goal … But there were plays within those drives when individual breakdowns along the line were noticeable and Rodgers had to run for his life and running plays were stuffed

Though the linemen admitted after the game that the no huddle may have contributed, saying their conditioning, or lack thereof, may have played a part, they weren’t going to point blame on others.

Quoted in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, left tackle Chad Clifton said he had his troubles with all-pro Dwight Freeney. … [visit site to read more]

Unveiled last season when the Packers hosted the San Francisco 49ers, the navy blue jerseys that are recreations of the historic 1929 uniform worn by the franchise’s first NFL championship team, features the oversized gold circle on the chest. While many have railed on the uniforms, of course this Packers fan loves them … if for nothing else than it’s something different. I especially like the chocolate brown helmets.

The press release issued this morning by the Packers PR department says the uniform, “…will remind fans, players and all spectators of the unique history and tradition of the Green Bay Packers organization.

My only surprise was that it was introduced, not only in the first preseason game, but the first quarter of the first preseason game. … [visit site to read more]

Adam Hughes, the Indianapolis Colts’ blogger, gives us a look at the team prior to the match-up with the Packers this Friday.

The following are his replies to my questions:

Peyton Manning will be wearing a baseball cap on the sidelines at Lucas Oil Stadium Friday night when the Packers pay a visit. Without him, the Colts are a different team. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

Without Manning and with the addition of Kerry Collins, how is the QB battle shaping up? Who has the upper hand at backup and is the team planning to be without Peyton for at least the first game of the regular season?

Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky have struggled in the pre-season, and Kerry Collins makes at least one of them expendable. My best guess now is that Painter moves to the practice squad and Orlovsky will be released.

In terms of Manning’s availability for Game 1 against Houston, I’m not absolutely convinced that he won’t start, but Collins’ presence makes it clear that team brass is very worried. I hope that Collins is a safeguard for further Manning problems, but I won’t be surprised at all to see him start against the Texans. Collins can keep the Colts afloat for awhile, but I doubt the Colts will be great with him under center.

How is the running game shaping up and are there any surprise players emerging in the backfield?

Joseph Addai is the main option again after signing a big extension in the off-season, but he hasn’t been used much in pre-season games. He should be ready for the opener Sept. 11.

Delone Carter looks like a brute and has the potential to help, especially in third-and-short situations where the Colts have really struggled in recent seasons. He could be one of the bargains of this year’s draft, selected in the fourth round (119th overall). Local product Darren Evans, picked up as an undrafted free agent, is also turning some heads and has a shot to make the roster. … [visit site to read more]
