We all know that Clay Matthews is an excellent outside linebacker and is in the correct defensive scheme under Dom Capers in Green Bay but statistics show that he cannot do it all by himself.

Clay is tough and can play through injuries and I am not talking about just minor injuries, i.e. the hairline fracture in his leg last year … but he cannot take down an offense on his own.

The other outside linebacker, be it by committee for the last two years, has been average at best. This does not allow Dom Capers to cut Clay loose on the line or the ability to throw enough stunts at the opposing offensive lines to get to the quarterback.

While Green Bay has won them all to-date, this team is far from perfect – a factor that makes this not only one of the best teams in franchise history, but probably its most likable.

How can we not look back on the past seven weeks without a smile?

How can we forget how the offense sliced through defenses with the precision that is Rodgers and company?

How can we forget the defense that has been gashed time and again for big plays, yet has always seemed to find that special play that turns the game?

Something special is happening in Green Bay … right before our eyes. Another chase at the prize is under way, but when the Packers resume play next week they will hit a headwind of competition that will test them – on the road at Chargers, Lions, Chiefs and don’t forget having to play the Bears and Vikings once more.

Bye week?

What fan honestly loves the bye week? I mean, sure it gives you that chance to get away for the weekend, without missing the game on Sunday, but, honestly who really likes the bye week?

We get to do yard work now, yay! All the bye week does is gives us two weeks to dissect our team. Let’s face it, we all do it. We all know the Packers are 7-0 and have the best record in football. We all know Aaron Rodgers is the favorite to win the MVP thus far. We know they have holes in the defense, but make the big plays when they have to. We know they are overcoming injuries, yet again. We know that there are only a couple of teams that could even give the Packers a run this season as well.

With that said, who can compete with the Green ‘n Gold?

It’s hump day, the middle of a week, but not just any ordinary week. It’s bye week for the Green Bay Packers, so I thought I would provide you with a few links to take a look at this morning that might brighten your view of an upcoming weekend without Packers football.

Not only do we have a story about T.O.’s workout yesterday where he held the party but nobody showed up, but we have a story about Mason Crosby’s recent success and why he probably deserved to be re-signed for the next five years, an inside look at how the Packers grading system keeps all players humble and honest, and a fun look at pictures of the 1965 Packers … one of the best Packers squads to ever hit the field.

So, enjoy. It won’t be long and we’ll be looking toward the big match-up between the Packers and Chargers next week.

It all comes after the jump.

Maybe Deion Sanders knows more than most would expect.

You see, it was one month ago that Sanders went on record saying he felt the Bears had a better chance of challenging the Packers for the North Division title or at least to take over second best in the division.

At that time, Sanders was heard on the NFL Network saying that he “loved the Packers,” but it was the Lions who got a tongue lashing at the time … the other hosts on the program attacked Sanders and questioned his logic.

Well, after the last couple of weeks, Sanders is all of a sudden looking like a genius. With the Lions dropping two straight in the friendly confines of Ford Field, it looks like this team is simply ordinary. Losing to San Francisco and Atlanta, the Lions had little teeth in either its offense or defense.

The Packers, behind the nearly flawless performance of Aaron Rodgers, some timely running at the end of the game, and a defense that again bent, but didn’t break, did enough to hold off the Minnesota Vikings and their energetic rookie quarterback, Christian Ponder, 33-27.

Ponder, making his first start with the Vikings (now 1-6 on the season), kicked off the game with a bang by hitting Michael Jenkins for 73 yards and a near touchdown on the first play of the game. However, the Packers defense again came up with some huge defensive efforts when needed and James Starks ended the game with six consecutive runs and a first down to put the dagger into the Vikes’ hearts.

Ponder’s first play heave didn’t account for the Vikings’ first score, but Adrian Peterson banged it in a couple of plays later to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead.

However, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers came right back on their first possession to go 91 yards for a touchdown to tie it at 7-7.

The Vikings defense, behind two sacks by league-leader Jared Allen, held the vaunted Packers offense in check for most of the first half, though Rodgers was dead-on in his passing. He completed his first 13 passes and would have had 14 had rookie Randall Cobb hung onto a pass on a crossing route. His drop came on a third and 16 and it appeared he would have certainly had the first down – maybe even a score.

Clint Starks of The Viking Age (no, that's not him in the picture) talks about Sunday's game. We here at Lombardiave caught up this week with The Viking Age editor, Clint Starks, to ask him about the Minnesota Vikings and especially about how they are viewing Sunday’s game with the unbeaten Green Bay Packers. Our exchange is below. Q. The Donovan McNabb multi-million dollar experiment is seemingly over. How does it affect the mindset of the team the rest of the season … Or does it? A.

How
does it affect the mindset of the team the rest of the season … Or does it?

A. Adrian Peterson recently came out and said he didn’t think Donovan got a fair
shake. However, that was after, earlier in the year his coming out and saying that
everyone knows what the problem is (implying it was Donovan). I don’t believe that
the change to Ponder will be polarizing in any fashion. I think this team has been
taken to the woodshed and beat and then taken back there again to get beat again
just for good measure. This team knows who they are when they look in the mirror
and that is a non-playoff team. By and large players, are not looking at single
seasons (that the difference between fans and players) but they are trying to get
better every week. This Vikings club will continue to get better individually and so I
still look for them to compete and not roll over on Sundays.

More questions and answers after the jump …

There’s some good news and some not-so-good news that has came out of Packers camp this afternoon. The good news is defensive end Mike Neal saying he is expecting to play yet this season, but he just doesn’t know when that will be. He said for sure it wouldn’t be the game after the bye (at San Diego), but that it would be at some point. “I feel good. I’m optimistic.
“I can only do as much as I’m able to, as much as they let me do,” Neal said. “I’ll just go from there. I’m still optimistic. I still hope to play this year but when? I just don’t know.”

The not-so-good news was that Ryan Pickett suffered a mild concussion yesterday and was being listed as questionable on the Packers injury report.
