Packers re-sign Gurley

Tori Gurley, the promising practice squad player who was nearly plucked from the Packers midway through this past season and is considered by some to be one of the more intriguing prospects not on the active roster, was re-signed to a futures contract. That means he doesn’t receive any guarantees, depending on what the Packers do in the draft and free agency.

My guess is that he will be with the team up until training camp for sure and sets up an interesting question about whether the Packers will bring back longtime veteran Donald Driver.

Driver, who is in the final year of his contract and is scheduled to make a total of $5 million this year, said he wants to stay with the Packers and insists he wants to play until he’s 40. That’s problematic in Green Bay because of the depth of their talent pool at the position.

There are some who speculate Driver could be retained if he takes a major cut in pay.

Gurley, at 6-4, has shown much promise on special teams and could add to the team in that respect if he doesn’t crack the lineup. He will certainly have to show improvement in his route running and pass catching abilities if he is going to make the team as a receiver.

He was the last of the practice squad players signed to contracts. Six others were signed a couple of days ago.
