Vince Lombardi Explains His
Personal Philosphy

Vince Lombardi

April 28, 1968 – “I may have a different philosophy on personnel than others,” Packers general manager Vince Lombardi says, “but in my book I expect a player to improve from his rookie year on. If he doesn’t we’ll find somebody to take his place.” That reasoning, espoused while in Milwaukee to be honored by Alpha Sigma Nu (the national Jesuit honor society at Marquette University) helps explain the recent trade of tackle Steve Wright and linebacker Tommy Crutcher to the Giants for tackle Francis Peay. When asked if the team, with the completion of the trade, resembles what it will look like for the upcoming season, Lombardi asserts: “A team is never set.”
