YEAH BABY NFL Draft Day is here!
Why am I so excited thou asks? Well cause a year’s worth of speculation can now end. Yes I said a year because even before the first pick is made, someone somewhere will start their mock draft for next year already!
So pushing that fun thought aside, what does today hold? For many it is the start of something bigger and better, some will find that they don’t end up where they thought and others will remain on the outside looking in, hoping to get a shot at their dream.
On the team side of the ball (yeah I went there with a bad morning pun), general managers are made and some are shown the door based on the decisions made over the next few days. Success is measured on the choices made, before the players even hit the field. Good choice or bad choice the future of some clubs lie in the balance based on what happens over the next few days.
Finally the fans can begin to rejoice as the cold winter months now melt away with the snow and football kicks into first gear! Like spring training, hope springs eternal on this day and everyone (except the Vikings, Bears and Lions) has a shot at the Super Bowl.
So what can we expect today from the brain trust situated in the Packers’ war room? Expect the unexpected when you have Ted Thompson as the general. Just when you think you know what he is going to do, he does a 180 and pulls a tactical surprise like last year.
We do know one thing – no matter who he drafts in whichever round he will answer every question with the tried and true response of, “We drafted the best available player.” Granted, old Ted could give a politician a run for his/her money with answers as fabricated as that, but we all know (good, bad or indifferent) that he has something up his sleeve and will do something that makes us cheer, groan and cry all at the same time.
I think what best sums up this entire day is Ted’s response to what the draft day is all about, ”It’s like Ron (Wolf) always said, it’s kind of like baseball, you’re not going to get a hit every time you go to the plate, but if you have more swings you have a better chance at getting a hit. I think in general philosophy I’d rather have more than less, but at the end of the day I’d rather have more quality than anything. But quality and quantity both is a nice thing.”
So gang, get ready for a long wait, a fun ride and let the official start of the season begin and does anyone have any thoughts as to who we should draft next year?
GO PACK GO!
