First, it was the New York Giants on the frozen tundra of that January 2012 debacle, and then last year … well, we really don’t want to reiterate the pain and frustration we all felt after that hammering in San Francisco.
Nobody felt that embarrassment more than Hawk, a veteran who, like his teammates on the defensive side of the ball, has seemingly taken their game to new levels this summer. Based on what’s been occurring at training camp during the first week of practices, the defense is stepping up its level of play.
The coaches think so, the media watching every play of every practice have been tweeting about the effort that is emanating from the defense and Hawk solidified the impression by saying today that there’s a renewed commitment to their jobs.
Here’s what he had to say in interviews published today:
“I’m sure you’ve heard it, it sounds cliché or whatever, but we do kind of have a renewed sense of urgency or whatever. I know I’ve said it a few times, other guys probably have I’m guessing, just because it sucks. We went to the playoff twice and got blasted. We got beat bad. They took the game from us. Specifically as defensive guys, we let our offense down, so that’s something as a defense we need to get some pride back and take it. That’s why I think this whole offseason, if you’ve watched anything, our practices or whatever we’re doing, it’s almost stepped up a notch.”
How can you not like what Hawk is saying here?
Of all the players on the defense, he’s one of the elders, one of the leaders now. Heck, he even took a pay cut to come back to the team. How often does that happen in today’s day and age? Clearly, he likes what’s happening and was willing to take a few million less to be a part of it all.
Now all he and his teammates have to do is turn those words into action.
Stay tuned … it won’t be long.
