Green Bay Packers fans: Datone, oh Datone, where art thou?

The Green Bay Packers have been offline the past couple days, especially when it comes to any news about the status of first round draft choice Datone Jones’s injured ankle.

So, just what’s going on with Green Bay Packers rookie defensive end Datone Jones? We know he was injured during the first play of last Friday’s 17-0 embarrassing loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field.

We know the injury has been described as a sprained ankle … and that’s it.

Silence. offline. Mouths zippered shut.

We’re hoping that changes today.

This picture has bee circulating the inter web the past couple of days showing Datone Jones’s injury last Friday night.

The Packers begin a transition from the morning practices they’ve been having the past two weeks by holding sessions that are to begin around the 11 a.m. hour as they work to prepare in a way that is more like those workouts they go through when the regular season gets under way.

With that said, today’s (Monday, Aug. 12) practice session will not be open to the public and will also be without pads.

However, our hope is that at some point today we are provided some news about Jones. How serious is this sprained ankle? We know that even a minor ankle injury can cause discomfort for weeks. We’ve all turned our ankles. We all know the feeling. Now add 285 pounds on top of that and you might get an idea of what Jones is feeling today.

As fans, we’re hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst possible news with Jones. A high ankle sprain could mean weeks on the shelf for the Packers’ first round draft pick. If so, his injury can be added to the more than one dozen who have been sidelined already because of injury.

Though the Packers have not announced any times for Mike McCarthy’s daily meeting with the press on their home website, but we’ll keep our ears pinned to the ground for any news about Jones and any other injury news of note.

Stay tuned …

Yeah, I hate to say this, too, but when McCarthy mentioned Jones on Saturday, saying there was no news yet, he scratched his neck, which is what body language experts would call a “tell.” So, I’m bracing.

Good catch on the body language. Yes, hoping for the best, but bracing for the worst. We may be stuck with C.J. Wilson for another year.

Tell what? He knows and won’t tell?

I don’t think he knew everything, but I think that he knew more than he was letting on. He not-answered the question pre-emptively, he didn’t seem comfortable doing it. Nothing new there. Packers are notoriously tight with their medical information. I’m sure they have their reasons.

Imagine Jones misses some of the regular season, and Lacy’s hamstring is more of an issue than we would guess. I’m not saying that’s so; I’m just expressing my paranoia. We’ve just gotten Perry back, and he looks improved, though not great, with his protective cast. Worthy’s gone, as far as I can tell. Who knows if Sherrod will ever play again. Bulaga’s lost for the season. Nobody can predict injuries, and smacking Thompson would be unfair, but these are not good results from high draft choices, and fans are not always the most reasonable people.

This really suck. Second year in a row we lost our #1 pick to injury. Wish they would just say what the problem is.

Fortunately, I was wrong. Doubt he’ll play this next game, but seems set beyond that.
