Aaron Rodgers won't be handing the ball off to running back DuJuan Harris because the Packers placed him on IR. They may designate him as a player to come back after eight weeks, but that's highly doubtful. Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports photograph

Green Bay Packers: Final cuts made to get to 75 players

The Green Bay Packers announced the moves they needed to complete to get to the league-mandated players by making this announcement this afternoon:

The Green Bay Packers placed four players on injured reserve, four players on reserve/physically unable to perform, and released K Zach Ramirez. The transactions were announced Tuesday by Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations.

The Packers placed T Bryan Bulaga, WR Kevin Dorsey, RB DuJuan Harris and LB Jarvis Reedon injured reserve. S Sean Richardson, T Derek Sherrod, T JC Tretter and DE Jerel Worthy were placed on reserve/physically unable to perform.

The Packers also announced earlier today that they were going to place running back DuJuan Harris on injured reserve after he had been designated by Head Coach Mike McCarthy earlier this summer as the team’s starter. However, Harris was injured in last Friday’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

There are no surprises among these first transactions of training camp, with the exception of Giorgio Tavecchio, in my mind. While he was released, both McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson have indicated that the Italian-born kicker is still part of the kicking competition. Maybe they knew something because the free agent kicker the Packers brought in Sunday was not very good – thus the team’s decision to release him today. after missing just one kick on Sunday, Zachary Ramirez was just 2-of-9 today. Veteran kicker Mason Crosby didn’t miss in practice today and seemingly has the edge in winning the competition and the job.

Harris, who had three carries for a grand total of three yards, was injured when tackled on a screen pass last Friday. He walked off the field and downplayed the extent of the injury. However, after getting a second opinion, the injury turned out to be significant. It’s unclear whether Harris will be designated for return to the team after eight weeks, but all indications are that won’t be the case. It appears Harris will be out for the remainder of the year.

Bulaga was injured during Family night, Dorsey was injured during the first couple days of training camp and Jarvis Reed was injured in last weekend’s game.

Those on the PUP list were also expected. Who knows when first round draft pick Derek Sherrod will ever come back; Sean Richardson’s neck injury is also a mystery. Tretter broke his ankle on the first day of rookie orientation camp and Worthy wasn’t expected to be back after suffering a serious knee injury late last season.

The Packers will play Thursday night and will make their final cuts to get to the 53-man roster this weekend.

Stay tuned … maybe by then Giorgio Tavecchio will be back. Hey! It’s the NFL where anything is possible.
