Update: Packers release Alex Green

As of 2:30 p.m., the Packers had announced 19 players who had been given their walking papers, with the most notable among them being running back Alex Green, tight ends Matthew Mulligan, D.J. Williams, and Jake Stoneburner, wide receivers Charles Johnson, Myles White, and Tyrone Walker.

By our count, the Packers still need to announce the release of four more players before 5 p.m. today.

Early talk was that the Packers had an interest in bringing, among others, Johnson and Stoneburner, as well as Jonathan Amosa back to the practice squad if they cleared waivers.

One of the first cuts announced at about 9:30 a.m. this morning was the release of quarterback Vince Young, leaving second-year player B.J. Coleman still with the team. As of this afternoon, both Coleman and running back James Starks were still on the squad.

Starks is one of the more surprising survivors given that he started the preseason as the number one back and then slowly lost playing time and production as the Packers proceeded to audition all the other backs in a rotation the final three games.

However, with the injury to DuJuan Harris in the third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, the dynamics at running back have changed. Why the Packers have maintained Starks on the roster with John Kuhn, Johnathan Franklin, and Eddie Lacy is interesting. Joe McKnight, the former New York Jets RB/KR is also in the mix, having tried out with the team this morning. Do the Packers sign McKnight and keep both him and Starks? The next couple of hours will tell that tale.

So, as of 2:20 p.m., here is the list of players the Packers have released:

  • Jonathan Amosa, FB
  • Loyce Means, CB
  • David Fulton, S
  • Vince Young, QB
  • Kevin Hughes, OL
  • Garth Gerhart, OL
  • Chaz Powell, S
  • Charles Johnson, WR
  • Andrew Datko, OT
  • Tyrone Walker, WR
  • Donte Savage, OLB
  • Patrick Lewis, OL
  • Myles White, WR
  • D.J. Williams, TE
  • Jake Stoneburner, TE
  • Alex Green, RB
  • Matthew Mulligan, TE
  • Dezman Moses
  • James Nixon, CB

I mentioned on another post that if Lacy were to miss any time, the Packers would have nothing but finesse RBs and that won’t get it done. Stated Starks is the only other RB with any power and he needs to stay.Although, when he fumbled on that stretch run with no blocking,I thought that may be the ax but, glad to see MM and TT realize he really is better than rest when healthy.I hope he can remain healthy and give a solid tape reel for next season as this will be it for him in GB no matter his contribution this season.
