Most Green Bay Packers fans (let alone football fans) are probably saying: Who is Charles Johnson and why should we care that the Cleveland Browns signed him off of our practice squad?
Why am I even writing about him?
You are probably right, but I have been intrigued with this player since Packers GM Ted Thompson drafted him in the 7th round of this past draft out of Grand Valley State.
His sheer size (6’2″, 215 pounds) and speed (4.39 in 40 yard dash) excited me. Of course, he fought through a number of injuries during training camp and the team did not get a good chance to evaluate him, but the Packers’ front office thought enough of him to keep him on the practice squad.
Now apparently, the Browns want to take a flyer on him.
It is unfortunate that the Packers did not have room for him on the regular roster.
I would have liked to see a wideout of his size and speed get an opportunity to show his wares. It was a crapshoot but in his two years at Grand Valley State, Johnson caught 128 passes for 2,229 yards with 31 touchdowns.
Even if it is not considered the college big leagues, those are some tasty statistics. And worth a look- see.
Well, if Johnson does pan out, it won’t be with Green Bay. Good luck to him.
