The Green Bay Packers Running Game Is Legitimate

Aaron Rodgers prepares to hand the ball to running back Eddie Lacy against the Baltimore Ravens.

Eddie Lacy. James Starks. Johnathan Franklin.

Three names that this year have run for 100 yards or more in a game for the Green Bay Packers. Forty-four games before this we were all talking, wondering when we would ever see the day when our amazing passing offense would ever get a compliment that could first keep the opposing defense honest and second close out games.

It has finally happened.

In 3 of the last 4 games we have had a 100 yard rusher, and even in the one without we had Lacy run for 99. This is not an apparition. The Packers can run the ball.

You can start by thanking Mike McCarthy. Sure we get mad at him for some bone-headed calls, but he is the reason for this one. If he hadn’t shaken up the offensive line this year, I think we have a different result. He has also stuck with the run this year, which is not something we could say for the last two years.

The Packers having David Bahktiari, Josh Sitton, Evan Dietrich-SmithT.J. Lang, and Don Barclay has transformed the front of the offense. These big boys are mean and athletic. They are tearing up defensive fronts to let our running backs rush for a decent gain, then use their talents to add some more to it.

Eddie Lacy looks every bit the every down back we have been begging the Packers front office for. After Ted Thompson seemingly reluctantly took him in last year’s draft, Lacy has put up some good yardage versus some decently good fronts. The Ravens and Lions both boast very good front sevens. James Starks, when he’s been on the field, has looked rejuvenated. Johnathan Franklin, even though he has work to do, may be able to be the lightning to Lacy’s thunder.

Get ready Packers fans. The running game is just getting started, and could carry us to another Lombardi trophy.
