The Packers have signed Flynn and placed Seneca Wallace on injured reserve in what seems like a way for Green Bay to protect the possibility of having Wallace back next season for some reason. Many Packers’ fans knew this was likely to happen but what will be the real impact of this and how soon could Flynn start?
Matt Flynn has had success in the past for the Packers but he is not going to be the guy that will be starting for the Packers this Sunday against the Giants. Flynn might know some parts of the system but he was the quarterback when Joe Philbin was the offensive coordinator and calling plays. Mike McCarthy is the play-caller for the Packers now and while the offense hasn’t changed that much, the offense is still going to be different. Flynn will need a week or two to get readjusted to the system.
Also, Scott Tolzien was solid in his Green Bay debut this past week despite the two interceptions he threw against the Eagles. Tolzien showed some potential and will actually have a chance this week to get the first team reps that he hasn’t had all season. Tolzien also is a quarterback that has a history of not trying to force too much and nerves may have affected him in some parts of the game against the Eagles.
Either way, Tolzien has shown that he deserves the chance to start for the Packers until he shows that he should not be playing on an NFL field.
The one immediate impact of this deal is how Matt Flynn gives the Packers a much better security blanket at backup quarterback than any other player they could have had. Flynn also has had some success in the past with quality performances to boost the Packers’ overall performance. Flynn knows the receivers on the Green Bay roster and should know how they play fairly well if he has to come in due to an emergency situation if Tolzien were to get injured.
Flynn also has the talent to push Tolzien to perform because the former Wisconsin quarterback will know that a bad performance could cost him his starting job the next game. Flynn also gives McCarthy a player he knows well to backup Tolzien which will give McCarthy more confidence which should be felt by the entire team.
Flynn is also known by many of the guys on the roster and should transition smoothly back into the Green Bay locker room.
Matt Flynn is back with the Packers and Green Bay seems slightly better at quarterback this week than they were last week.
