This is going to be a rant, so bear with me. I am not going to just shove stats down your throats and tell you why the defense is terrible or where they can be better or even that there is a silver lining. The point is, this defense, unfortunately, has it in its hands to determine the way the season plays out for the Green Bay Packers.
I had to sit through last week’s game versus the Philadelphia Eagles as well. Watching missed opportunity after missed opportunity, broken coverages and bad tackling. It was simply atrocious.
I, like many of you, had higher hopes for this defense. Maybe Dom Capers would learn a thing or two after the humiliating loss to the San Francisco 49ers last year. Admittedly, the run defense seems much better. But the pass defense … I hate to say it, but I am getting deja vu from the 15-1 season, where the offense made the team, and then the defense made the team exit in the first playoff game.
This team is still built completely on offense. Every time I hear or say bend but don’t break in terms of the defense I get sick. Aaron Rodgers going out has shown the defense for what it is. When Clay Matthews is only half himself (we all know that that cast has held him back), we should keep him on the sideline to recover. It does not help that he is about the only player for which other teams game plan.
I hate to say it, but I was hoping the Jets would tank this year. Rex Ryan would get fired, and Ted Thompson would fly out and beg him to replace Capers. Sure, Ryan is not the best head coach, but he is a heck of a defensive coordinator and knows how to find defensive talent.
I still can hope I guess.
