Green Bay Packers first round NFL Draft pick: Which position will be targeted?

It may be early, but I have been wondering … What position will the Green Bay Packers target in the first round of the NFL Draft?

I know a lot depends on many factors. The Packers have quite a few players who will be free agents. Sam Shields, James Jones, BJ Raji, Evan Dietrich-Smith - just to name a few. Ted Thompson likes to re-sign his own, so I’d say 2 out of those 4  have a good chance of returning to town.

Another factor is draft order. It looks as if the Packers will be picking in the middle of the draft. Who is going to be there? If someone fell from the top 10, would they pick on talent rather than need?

On that note, the other factor is the talent. Will Ted Thompson finally choose quality over quantity and trade up or at least stand pat, or will he continue his mad scientist-like trading down to accumulate picks?

From there, are any of the team’s positions set where they do not need to pick a player there? I think we can at least rule out quarterback, halfback, and wide receiver (remember, this is just a first round analysis). Otherwise I think every other position is wide open.

These are the things that keep Packers fans up at night. It is a bit mind boggling just how much can factor into which direction the team may go in April, even with that being five months away.

Which position would you prefer the Packers address in the first round?
