Top free agents speculation: Brian Orakpo – What would he look like in Green Bay?

Washington Redskins outside linebacker Brian Orakpo prepares to run onto the field for the Redskins.

Continuing this series, as I was reading around the “Interwebs,”  I came across an article by NFL.com’s Chris Wesseling on the top 25 free agents.

It got me to thinking, “Who on this list would fit in with the Green Bay Packers and what would it look like?”

We are to the third player on this list and one that makes a little bit of sense, even if he were a little pricey, in Brian Orakpo.

(Note: All of these articles are simply speculation as we consider the players on this list and what might be the case if they became Packers; we’re not convinced that Ted Thompson would sign any of them – but it’s fun to think that way anyway)

Brian Orakpo is the first player on this list who could actually hit the free agent market. Orakpo is definitely valuable to his team, the Washington Redskins, but the team is under new management in Jay Gruden and has a proven player in Ryan Kerrigan who could price him out of Washington. Orakpo also had a torn pectoral injury in 2012 which cost him a season and could affect his value.

Orakpo has played well in his five years(with one mostly lost to injury) with 39.5 sacks and 157 tackles. Last year he rebounded from his injury to rack up 10 sacks, 43 tackles and a pick that he ran back for a touchdown.

Orakpo would make a lot of sense for Green Bay simply because they are quite devoid of a pass rush other than Clay Matthews. They have tried the draft and lower level free agents to fill the void in Eric Walden, Frank Zombo, and recently Nick Perry and Mike Neal, but none have generated any kind of consistency.

Orakpo would be a force next to Matthews in this scheme due to the fact that teams would have to pick their poison when game planning. In this league, if you can get under the quarterback’s skin, you can win a ball game. The Giants proved that winning two Super Bowls against one of the best quarterbacks out there in Tom Brady.

Orakpo would fit the scheme and be able to make an immediate difference. He even has some experience with insurance commercials to join Aaron Rodgers in a few “discount double checks.” While it is another one of those free agent deals we probably will not see, it is one that makes a lot of sense.

Packers have to get somebody to help Matthews, who know’s, he might not get hurt ALL THE TIME then. Greg Hardy is a free agent, going have ass ain’t gonna help Matthews much either, might as well get somebody worthwhile. Not unless they Bird, Justin Tuck is a free agent but older.

I agree. Matthews and Capers need HELP this year. Simply drafting a guy just won’t cut it anymore.

no, we dont need another three year develop plan, which seems to be the case with our draft picks….
