Free agent speculation: Alterraun Verner – What would he look like in Green Bay?

(Note: All of these articles are simply speculation as we consider the players on this list and what might be the case if they became Packers; we’re not convinced that Ted Thompson would sign any of them – but it’s fun to think that way anyway)

Continuing this series focusing on free agency, we set our sights on an article by NFL.com’s Chris Wesseling on the top 25 free agents.

It got me to thinking, “Who on this list would fit in with the Green Bay Packers and what would it look like?”

At number six we have what most would call icing on the cake in Alterraun Verner.

Alterraun Verner is a player who really came into his own this year for the Tennessee Titans. Even with new management and a new scheme, Verner will definitely be difficult to pry away from the Titans, who do not have much else at the cornerback position. At any rate he would be difficult to replace.

Verner has played the last 4 years in Tennessee. In those seasons, Verner has 11 interceptions, 50 passes defensed, and 226 tackles. Last season he accounted for 5 picks, a whopping 23 passes defensed, and 49 tackles. Due to his efforts he was selected to the Pro Bowl this year.

So, Alterraun Verner in Green Bay?

Well, if Sam Shields were to escape, Verner would be a very capable replacement with little dropoff (both had nearly the exact same stats last season). With a healthy Casey Hayward expected back next season, and Tramon Williams playing closer to 2010 form, Verner could be a good piece in the secondary to lock up on the number one receiver. The only thing I do not like is the fact Green Bay would let a player who would know the scheme perfectly get away in Shields and have to sign Verner in this instance.

Verner could make an impact, but it would be about the same as the one Shields would make here, so it just would not make a lot of sense unless he was considerably cheaper, which he will not be. Now if the Packers somehow landed both? Color me intrigued. Maybe move Williams to safety?

While it will not happen, it is at least an interesting thought.
