Free agent speculation: Linval Joseph – What would he look like in Green Bay?

(Note: All of these articles are simply speculation as we consider the players on this list and what might be the case if they became Packers; we’re not convinced that Ted Thompson would sign any of them – but it’s fun to think that way anyway)

Continuing this series focusing on free agency(after a 2 week absence, my apologies), we set our sights on an article by NFL.com’s Chris Wesseling on the top 25 free agents.

It got me to thinking, “Who on this list would fit in with the Green Bay Packers and what would it look like?”

We have reached number 13 in Linval Joseph.

Joseph has been a key component for the New York Giants defensive line for the last three years. He is not a player the current management in New York will let go easily. A great space filler and run stuffer, Joseph has racked up 9 sacks and 109 tackles with 69 assists throughout his career. Joseph had another solid season with 3 sacks, 34 tackles with 25 assists last season.

So Linval Joseph on Lambeau Field in a capacity other than kicking the Packers butts (too soon?)? I would prefer that to the alternative. The Packers, while they have stated a want for more athletic lineman, should take a serious look at Joseph. They are set to lose most of the line in B.J. Raji, Johnny Jolly, and Ryan Pickett. If I had to choose one of the three I would probably go with Jolly, as his contract will be low and he does not have much tread on his tires.

With that in mind, the Packers need a space eater like Joseph to stick in the middle. While he has played in a 4-3 for the short entirety of his career, I think Joseph could play very well with the correct players around him. Put Joseph in the middle, with Jolly and Mike Daniels on the outsides, subbing in Datone Jones for Jolly on passing downs. Maybe we could make it work.

Either way, the Packers need defensive linemen. What do you think about Linval Joseph? Leave us your comments!
