It seems like most football players, especially kickers like Mason Crosby, are remembered for the missed kick rather than the made and it wasn’t long ago we heard people saying Crosby needed to be cut. As he tried working out of a slump, many impatient fans wanted him out, not remembering what he had done for the team only a year beforehand, being responsible for at least three last-second victories.
An Impressive Resume’
In Mason Crosby, the Green Bay Packers have a player with 7 NFL seasons behind him, and we have not heard too much about him in the past couple of months.
He is a 6-1, 207-pound, 29-year-old Colorado graduate, who is “in” apparently with the front office atPackers headquarters. Mason Crosby made 33 of the 37 field goals he attempted in 2013 – an 89.2 percentage, with 57 yards being his longest, which is also a record. This is the guy who gets the inferiority complex on the team, because he doesn’t have ball-carrying, or pass-rushing skills that get people out of their chairs cheering. The only time he sees this is when the team is down by a few points with less than a minute on the clock, and he sails a kick through the uprights for the win.
Crosby’s done much more than that, but only seems remembered when he misses.
Crosby holds more NFL records, with 762 points in his first six seasons, topping the previous record in 2012.
Fans couldn’t understand him missing some kicks, going into a slump, coming out, then going back in. I guess it’s safe to say a kicker doesn’t get press unless he goofs up. He’s had records for two, 140-point seasons, holding team records of the top four (4) single-season point totals without a TD, the three (3) longest field goals in team history, 58, 56 & 56 yards in the 2011, 2010 and 2011 seasons, along with a franchise record of 23 consecutive good kicks, also between the 2010 & 11 seasons.
You can be certain when some were calling to bring on the “axe” in 2012, team leaders were well aware of the fact that kickers, like boxers or quarterbacks, can have difficulties, perhaps trying too hard, or being too sensitive to what others say or do, and even going through divorce or other sociological events can create problems. Pro sports calls it a “slump” most noted to baseball sluggers, but also to others. The point is this: Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson know they have a quality guy on the job.
Team leaders were aware of Mason Crosby’s statistics: Besides holding the impressive record through the 2012 season of a league-leading 762 points, Crosby led the league in 2007 as a rookie with 141 points and only Paul Horning made it to 700 points faster than Crosby by two games 89 – 87, respectively. His PAT percentage 99.35%, which is 306 made out of 308 kicks for 1st place in Packer history. As an active player, Crosby holds the team record at 106 straight games (incl. post-season) the longest current player on the roster.
His career record is 185 field goals made out of 235 attempts, for a 78.7% average, good enough for the Green Bay Packers to hang on to. He’s seasoned and dependable.
