Jermichael Finley – just when and how will he proceed with his football career?
Today we got some news about the Packers free agent tight end, but not much worth writing home about. If the re-signing situaion is interesting surrounding backup quarterback Matt Flynn, it’s plain mysterious when it comes to Finley.
He took a trip to Seattle a few weeks ago, failed their physical, and then is said to have left with a gentleman’s agreement that he could be considered by the Seahawks when he passes his physical.
In the meantime, the Packers have not shut the door on their talented, but mercurial, tight end. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said they, too, are waiting for tests to be done and the doctors to give the green light.
When that happens is anyone’s guess.
Today there were reports that he was in discussions with the Miami Dolphins – whatever that means. There is a definite connection there – Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin spent years in Green Bay as the offensive coordinator before being hired as the head guy in South Beach. Philbin knows Finley well, so it might be a good fit.
For the team that eventually signs Finley, it might be a signing worth its salt. Finley, because of the health factor, will probably be forced to sign a short-term – one- or two-year contract. That’s another reason why the Packers are still in the discussion over Finley. If the Packers are satisfied with his health they may take a shot on another couple of years with Finley.
Either way, nothing will be determined until Finley has a chance to complete the medical tests. Then it will be a wait-and-see for the doctor’s report.
Where will Finley end up? I don’t think there’s anyone with any better idea today than they had weeks ago.
Stay tuned …
