Update: Mike McCarthy Way celebration today at noon

Update to this story – Today, a story in the Green Bay Press Gazette provided new information as follows:

The [road name] change will be celebrated in a ceremony at noon Wednesday outside Green Bay Distillery, 835 Potts Ave., across the street from Ray Nitschke Field. McCarthy and team president Mark Murphy will attend, as will Aubinger and Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt.

Last night a move to change Potts Avenue  in Ashwaubenon to Mike McCarthy Way got preliminary approval – something that should please Packers fans to no end, but not necessarily something that’s going to get the Green Bay Packers’ head coach too excited.

Here is what Paul Srubas, a Green Bay Press Gazette reporter, tweeted last night:

The even-keeled McCarthy, who has led the Packers to three straight NFC North Division titles and four in his first eight years with the team, tends to fly below the publicity radar and tends to like it that way.

Not one to boast, McCarthy does understand success and the notoriety it brings. He was front and center when the team honored the retiring Donald Driver at a big party a couple of years ago. He was front and center when the team celebrated their Super Bowl title in 2010 at Lambeau Field.

My guess is that he won’t shy away from the road name-change ceremony if and when it is scheduled, but we also feel he will be the most shy of all in attendance.

But that’s OK. We want our coach to be like that. He stays behind the hoopla and simply does his job.

After all, that’s why his name is being considered for the name-change.

That’s the way it should be.
