Chris Jacke

In July 2013, Chris Jacke, a kicker who played 11 years in the NFL, and spent the first eight of those years in Green Bay, and was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame – and for good reason.

The strong-legged kicker who was drafted by the Packers in the 6th round (142nd overall) of the 1989 NFL Draft out of Texas El Paso, scored 820 points over the course of his career with the Packers, converting 76.2 of his field goal attempts and was nearly 99 percent good on his extra points. While he was always in the mid-70 percent range in field goal conversions, Jacke had his best season in 1993 when he hit 83.8 percent of his kicks.

Considering he played in Green Bay – not the easiest place to be successful as a kicker – Jacke’s consistency was always valued.

In addition, he was noted for his accuracy from long range. During that 1993 season Jacke hit 17-of-26 kicks from 50-plus yards and was known for that ability throughout his career. In his 11 years in the league he hit a total of 18-of- 31 attempts from 50-plus yards.

In all, Jacke appeared in 147 games over the course of those 11 years, 126 with Green Bay.

Jacke had several game-winning kicks during his career, one in particular was important. It was Oct 14, 1996, and the Packers were considered a Super Bowl contender hosting the ever-present San Francisco 49ers when he kicked a 53-yard game-winner in overtime to propel the Packers to a 23-20 overtime victory.

The win was an important milestone for the Packers and helped the team gain the momentum they needed on their way to a Super Bowl XXXI win. That would also be Jacke’s last season in Green Bay.

As a free agent at the end of the year, Jacke signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hurt in preseason, Jacke would never play for Pittsburgh, went on to sign with the Washington Redskins where he played one season and then finished his career in Arizona his final two years in the league.
