The final verdict

2016 wins by a single point over the unit from 2010. We know that the 2010 team won the Super Bowl. How does this bode for the 2016 edition of the Green Bay Packers?

Here are the results:

2010  — 4 position wins — wide receiver, defensive line, inside linebacker, cornerback

2016 — 5 position wins — running back, tight end, outside linebacker, safety, specialists

It’s clear that the talent hasn’t really dropped off since that magical season; it’s just concentrated in different areas. The drop-offs that were most apparent last year were wide receiver and inside linebacker, but hopefully the returns of Jordy Nelson and Sam Barrington will close those gaps. Huge upgrades have taken place, on the other hand, at running back and outside linebacker.

There’s a number of reasons the Packers haven’t made it to the Super Bowl in the past five seasons. Talented players underperforming in big games, overly conservative coaching, Brandon Bostick’s hands … among others.

But Ted Thompson is not to blame. The Packers have consistently been one of the most talented teams in the league since 2010. This year is no different.

There will be injuries, but 2010 saw 16 players on the injured reserved list, including Ryan Grant, Morgan Burnett, Jermichael Finley and Mark Tauscher.

And tbe 2010 Packers were not always the world-beaters we remember them as. They were 8-6 before catching fire at the end of the season.

So despite the inevitable struggles that the team will encounter, keep in mind that the 2016 Packers have all the talent necessary to follow in their predecessors’ footsteps as Super Bowl champions.
