Earlier this afternoon, ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted a tweet saying that the Green Bay Packers and St. Louis running back Steven Jackson had come to terms with Jackson signing on the dotted line to make a move to Wisconsin.

However, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Schefter quickly deleted the tweet. Silverstein said there has been no explanation Schefter and that it was “unclear if he just jumped the gun or if there [were] flaws with his report.

New from JS: Did he or didn’t he? Report that Steven Jackson agreed to terms with GB pulled bit.ly/ZLx9Q8 #packers

Jackson and the Packers have been rumored to be close to an agreement with reports beginning as early as late yesterday afternoon. However, the connection goes back even to last fall when it was rumored Jackson was headed to Green Bay through trade.

Those rumors never transpired into reality, but things heated up again last week when Jackson voided his contract with the Rams and then was caught on video during a discussion with Sports Illustrated’s Peter King saying that going to the Packers would “make sense.”

There were also reports today that the Packers indeed wanted to sign Jackson, but that they wouldn’t bring him in unless it was under their terms – some referred to it as “on the cheap.”

As of the 3 p.m. hour, there were no updates on either the possible Jackson signing by the Packers or any new information about where things stood with wide receiver Greg Jennings.

Stay tuned.

Lang took it where it hurts last year for the Packers ... he got his reward for hard work today with a four-year extension.

It probably wasn’t because of his field goal kicking prowess, but the Green Bay Packers saw enough in guard T.J. Lang that they thought it a good idea to lock him up.

Reported first by Adam Schefter, the Packers have agreed on a deal with Lang that will keep him in Green Bay for another four years, 2015. Immediate financials were not available.

The Packers showed faith in Lang when they let Daryn Colledge leave in free agency last year, signing with the Arizona Cardinals. Lang stepped right up to win the starting job for the Packers, playing in all 17 games for the team during their 15-1 run. He was a 2009 fourth round draft pick by the Packers.

Lang is considered one of the better inside linemen in the league. Last year he allowed only two sacks, one quarterback hit and eight hurries. Not too shabby for a guard playing in the pass-happy Packers offense.

While Lang was scheduled ro unrestricted free agency next year, this signing locks him up long-term.

So now that Lang is in the fold, there is just one other important player slated for free agency next year that the Packers must consider locking up … his name is Greg Jennings.

Belichick, Brady and company are slightly favored by the oddsmakers, but I’m just not sold.

When it comes to championship games, it always comes down to the team that plays the best defense – even in this day and age of the quarterback. Just ask Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

That’s why I have to go with the New York Giants over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XVLI.

Final score: Giants 33 Patriots 28

Here’s why: Though the Patriots are the sexier pick as Belichick and Brady go for their fourth ring together and the team is trying to play off the emotion surrounding Robert Kraft losing his wife, the Giants are the better team all-around. They have a running game, dynamite receivers, a top 5 quarterback AND a defense. Matchups make the difference is championship games and the Giants clearly have the upper hand in all categories.

Don’t get me wrong, the Patriots will make a game of it and it could come down to the final two possessions, but the Giants will come up with enough pressure on Brady to turn the tables. Throw in the fact that tight end Rob Gronkowski’s injury will put a dent in the Patriots’ offense and you have enough to give the Giants the edge in this one.

It should be a great game. That’s why everyone is split pretty much down the middle on predicting its outcome.

In fact, here’s the best prediction I could find:

Greg Easterbrook on ESPN.com has this prediction – Confusion about the new playoff overtime format reigns when the Giants onside kick to start overtime and the Patriots recover but run the wrong way. Final score: Giants 2 Patriots 0

After the jump, take a look at some of the picks by the experts … and take the time for a click over to Lombardiave.com on Facebook, and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter.

Surprising news that puts a huge crimp in the Detroit Lions plans to improve their running game was announced in the past hour – the trade that sent Ronnie Brown from Philadelphia to Detroit has been voided because Jerome Harrison, the running back traded to the Eagles, has previously undisclosed health issues.

NFL Insider Adam Schefter said the information came by two league sources.

The trade of Brown came on deadline day and, in the least appeared to be a quick fix for the Lions. Brown could have been an added weapon to an already potent offensive attack.

Lions rising star Jahvid Best has had concussion issues, and is uncertain to play this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

When healthy, Best has been very effective as a runner and receiver.

Through six games he had 84 touches for 390 yards – a 4.6 yard per carry.

Brown, as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, had just 13 carries for 38 yards – a 2.9 yard average.

How the lions fare in their running game now lies on the shoulders of Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams against Atlanta and Schwartz said he likes “a lot” about both.

According to NFL.com’s Adam Schefter, Packers quarterback Brett Favre will report to training camp Sunday, July 27, 2008 and is expected to submit a letter of reinstatement to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Apparently Goodell has had a hand in Favre’s comeback. The commish had been in contact with GM Ted Thompson and reportedly urged the villified-in-some-circles GM to find a trading partner for Favre. Sounds like Favre has a fan in Goodell, along with John Madden, Chris Berman, and ESPN. And Peter King.

Green Bay Packers training camp is about to become the set of the next Disney Channel high school drama. Which makes sense because ESPN is owned by Disney.
