Multiple reports over the past couple of days have indicated that Green Bay Packers third year running back Alex Green is the man in the team’s backfield – the number one back.

Well, we have to remember that it’s still June and that while the Packers are obliged to provide every opportunity to allow Green to compete for the starting running back position, we all know it’s all on paper. I think it’s pretty clear that Ted Thompson went out and drafted two high-quality running backs for a reason – to add depth and competition to the position, but to also allow those rookies to come in and compete.

My guess is that the table is set and that the rookies – Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin – are in place to slide into the majority of the team’s offensive schemes.

That’s not to say that Green or DuJuan Harris, James Starks or even undrafted free agent Angelo Pease won’t be competing for a spot on the 53-man roster come training camp. In fact, it’s expected that they will compete.

But to come out a month before training camp and announce that Green is the starter is simply fodder for debate.

No doubt, this will be one of the position competitions to watch and Green has as good of a shot at winning playing time as any of the backs who will hit the field in July. It’s also pretty clear that Green was forced into the full-time starting role last year before his knee was fully functional. Will he be 100 percent by July? It appears that way.

Here’s what Green had to say about his injured knee:

“That was the frustrating part. I’d go back, see a play and say, ‘I know I can make that cut’ or ‘I know I can break that tackle. I know I can explode.’ But physically, not being able to do it was frustrating. I knew that wasn’t the kind of player I am. That’s finally behind me. That’s finally behind me.

“Being able to cut without going, ‘Ahhh!’ and knowing in my head that it hurts terribly. So just being able to cut and not feel any pain and not think about it.”

In fact, despite his injured knee, he was the team’s leading rusher last season with 464 yards and a per-carry average of 3.4 yards. He didn’t find the end zone once. His role diminished by the end of the season last year when James Starks was thrown back into the lineup and after DuJuan Harris emerged as the team’s best runner the final month.

How it all plays out in the coming couple of months will be interesting.

Don’t get me wrong. I feel there is a place for Green on the Packers’ roster, but the team can’t keep everyone. My guess that when push comes to shove, James Starks will be either cut or traded, Angelo Pease (if he’s the real deal) will be hidden on the practice squad and the Packers go with Lacy, Franklin, Green and Harris.

What do you think, Packers fans? Is Green a legitimate threat to be the number one running back?

The Green Bay Packers offseason activities are officially under way, and we will continue discussing each position on the roster. Today, we take a close look at the Packers’ backfield. Next week we’ll finish out the offense with the tight ends and offensive line, and then we’ll move on to the defense.

Much has been written about the Packers running back situation, especially since they acquired Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin in the draft. Both these young players are unique talents that add a much-needed dynamic to the position. Just about every fan that watched the Packers last season understands why it is important for Green Bay to establish a consistent running game, and it seems Ted Thompson has made moves this offseason to accomplish this. However, despite the new acquisitions, there is still a lot of uncertainty at running back heading into the 2013 season.

There will be some tough decisions to make at the position for Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson. Who to start? Who to keep? Who to let go? Most likely, Green Bay will have to let some young talented players at the position walk. A difficult decision, indeed.

With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at the position.

Running Back/Fullback (8)

Eddie Lacy works out during the Green Bay Packers rookie orientation weekend. Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Safe – Eddie Lacy, 5-11, 230 pounds; Jonathan Franklin, 5-10, 205 pounds; John Kuhn, 6-0, 250 pounds

There is a lot of excitement among Packers fans this offseason over Lacy and Franklin, and for good reason. It seems Green Bay is finally committing to building their running game by bringing in top talent at the position. Both Lacy and Franklin were highly productive in college.

Lacy ran for 1,322 yards and 17 touchdowns with a 6.7 yards per carry average in 2012, and proved to be a physical force in the Crimson Tide ground game. The number that really jumps out at me is Lacy’s yards per carry average. That is very high considering Lacy faced top collegiate defensive talent in the SEC. There will be a bit of an adjustment for Lacy in the pros, but if Lacy could produce even a fraction of those numbers in the Green Bay offense, then the Packers might have something here.

Similarly, Franklin rushed for a school record 1,734 and 13 touchdowns with a 6.1 yards per carry average. However, Franklin also showed his versatility out of the backfield by recording 33 receptions for 323 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2012. Add to that Franklin’s kick returning ability, and it seems Green Bay may have found a truly unique talent in the middle of the draft.

Franklin seems more like an all-purpose back who could be utilized in the offense in a variety of ways, much like McCarthy has done with Randall Cobb, and Lacy is that grind-it-out power back that can be especially effective in short yardage and red zone situations. Franklin and Lacy balance each other out nicely, and it will be interesting to see which back rises during camp and claims the starting spot.

Aug 30, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; UCLA Bruins running back Jonathan Franklin (23) runs for a touchdown against the Rice Owls during the first quarter at Rice Stadium.
I expect Kuhn to keep his job this season, but look for Green Bay to begin developing young talent at the position to eventually replace Kuhn. Even though Kuhn is a fan favorite, it seems it is becoming more difficult for him to find a role in the Packers offense. If Green Bay commits more to establishing the run then they will need a more physical fullback who is a true run blocker. And with Franklin and Green on the roster, it seems Kuhn’s third-down back duties may go to younger talent.

On the Fence – DuJuan Harris. 5-8, 203 pounds; Alex Green, 6-0, 220 pounds; James Starks, 6-2, 218 pounds

After Lacy and Franklin, there is a lot of uncertainty at running back. Suddenly, the position has become crowded, and there seems to be only a couple of spots open for the returning veterans. I don’t expect the Packers to retain Harris, Green, and Starks. It looks like Green Bay will have to let at least one of these guys go.

The coaches seem to really like Harris. He came on late in the season last year and looked like the best back on the roster heading into the playoffs. Harris had his best game in week 17 against the Minnesota Vikings, where he recorded 70 yards rushing on 14 carries. Harris is still very young and has a lot of potential, and without a full season under his belt, we still haven’t seen the best he can offer. Harris will still have to fight for a roster spot this offseason, but he seems to be the best bet out of the returning backs to make the final roster in 2013. If Harris has a great offseason, he might even challenge Lacy and Franklin for the starting spot.

Green Bay Packers running back Alex Green during the game against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field. The Packers won 27-20. Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

If the Packers keep four running backs this season, Green and Starks will have to fight for the last spot. With Starks’ inability to stay in the lineup because of injuries, it seems Green is the better bet at this point. Starks has had some production in the past, but I’m not sure if the Packers will want to risk giving up a roster spot to a player who has trouble staying healthy.

Green has also had a string of injuries that kept him out of the lineup in his first two seasons, but the Packers haven’t really seen what Green can offer yet when healthy. Maybe this fact alone will keep him on the roster. Green also has some experience in the spread offense and could prove to be a reliable third-down back.

Either way, both Green and Starks have a lot to prove this offseason. Maybe they take this as extra motivation and impress their coaches during camp, but it seems the chips are stacked against them at this point.

Long Shots – Angelo Pease, 5-10, 211 pounds; Jonathan Amosa, 5-11, 247 pounds

Angelo Pease could be an interesting prospect for the Packers to keep around and develop. McCarthy seemed impressed with Pease’s movement out of the backfield in rookie camp, but we won’t really know what Pease has to offer until the pads are on and real contact is taking place. Unless Pease has an outstanding camp, my guess is that the Packers keep and develop Pease on the practice squad this season.

Amosa was a starting fullback for the Washington Huskies the past two seasons, and proved to be a very physical lead blocker for their running game. Maybe Green Bay brought in Amosa to add a more physical presence to the fullback position in their attempt to improve their running game. I’m not sure if Amosa will challenge Kuhn for the fullback position, but Amosa seems to have a different skill set than Kuhn and could prove to be a good special teams player. I could see Amosa landing on the practice squad this year and develop into the Packers blocking fullback of the future.

The Packers only kept four backs on their 53-man roster headed into last season (Benson, Starks, Green, Kuhn). Will this be the year they keep five? It could be a real possibility considering the amount of injuries they suffered at the position last year and the depth of young talent they currently have in the backfield.

This will be one of the more heated and intriguing position battles to observe heading into training camp. However, we won’t really know what these players offer until the real hitting starts in August. I can’t wait.

Forget the offensive line; forget the defensive line; and don’t even worry about safety – the most-watched and most interesting Training Camp competition for the Green Bay Packers is going to come down to running back.

So, Ted Thompson goes out and drafts two high-profile rookies at the running back position … what does that tell Alex Green, James Starks, and DuJuan Harris? Well, if nothing else, it places them on notice that management was not happy with what they saw last year and there will be changes.

The first was announced last week by Head Coach Mike McCarthy when he told the world he was flip-flopping the offensive line – moving RT Bryan Bulaga and RG Josh Sitton to the left side to replace LG T.J. Lang (who will move to the right side) and Marshall Newhouse, who will have to compete for the right tackle position with two, three, maybe even four other guys.

Though McCarthy said that the major shakeup along the line was more in line with his feeling it will help protect his $110 million quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, he must also think that it won’t hurt the running game.

The second major indication that management wasn’t pleased with last year’s running game was the fact that Thompson drafted Eddie Lacy out of Alabama in the second round and then traded up to nab Johnathan Franklin out of UCLA in the fourth round.

In-house backs, especially James Starks, are now wondering whether they will be around when the kickoff of the season-opener in San Francisco comes around. Starks was rumored to be on the trading block draft weekend, and he’s probably still there – though it’s unclear whether anyone would be interested in the oft-injured Packer.

Green, who stepped in as the featured back when Cedric Benson went down with a foot injury last year, was the team’s leading rusher. However, his 400-plus yards were mostly one- and two-yard efforts that consistently left the Packers with third and long situations last year. While Rodgers was adept at picking up first downs on many of those downs, it put undue pressure on the passing game to produce.

Harris was the bright spot for the Packers last year as he came out of nowhere to kick the running game in the butt at the end of the season, though it was much too little, too late as the Packers were still relying too heavily on their pass offense. While Harris was productive in his limited time on the field, it’s not real clear whether anyone thinks he’s a three-down back. Most see him as a change-of-pace weapon.

Senior Bowl north squad running back Johnathan Franklin of UCLA (23) carries the ball during the Senior Bowl north squad practice at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Enter Lacy and Franklin. Both came into this past weekend’s rookie orientation practices as the golden boys ready to rescue a dying run game. According to McCarthy, he wasn’t disappointed in what he saw. He called Lacy “smooth” and was real impressed with how Franklin handled punt and kicks – leaving one to think the Packers are leaning heavily on the possibility of his taking those duties over from Randall Cobb. That, of course, will have to play out in Training Camp.

And while Lacy and Franklin were impressive, there was another guy who caught the eye of McCarthy – Angelo Pease, an undrafted free agent who was called out twice by the head coach during his two press conferences.

So, what does this all mean?

Well, it means that there will be heady competition at the position come late July – something that did not exist at all last year. That lack of competition didn’t help that aspect of the game at all. Starks was penciled in as the starter heading into training camp, immediately got hurt and then the Packers were literally left with little. They scrambled to sign Benson at the last minute to shore things up, but that lasted until the fifth game of the season when he went down to injury and was out for the rest of the year.

How will Alex Green fit into the Packers running game in 2013?
Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Thompson and McCarthy weren’t about to let that happen again. Thus the drafting and signing of players who can fill the bill.

What will be the outcome of all this? Well, unless things change drastically, we don’t see Starks in the mix at all. Green and Harris will be in the fight for their lives and Lacy and Franklin – and possibly Pease – will be given long, hard looks.

Who emerges as the starter? Well, at this point, you’ve got to give the nod to Lacy, the big, hard running back who could wear defenses down. Throw in Harris, Franklin, Green and possibly Pease as players that should fit in well and contribute.

If I were the head coach, that’s how the stars would align – but I’m not, so we’ll leave the tough decisions up the Packers management. That’s why they get the big bucks and we just get to write about it.

It should be an interesting show to watch.

Stay tuned …

In the meantime, here’s a video that includes some clips of Angelo Pease

With the draft now in the rear view mirror, the offseason moves of the Green Bay Packers provide a peek into the offices at 1265 Lombardi avenue. A bit of insight into how Ted Thompson views the needs of the team and the direction Coach Mike McCarthy is steering the Packers can be understood by looking at the moves made over the past few months.

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

One thing that is certain, the run game is thought to be relevant for the Packers moving forward. Over the past few seasons the Packers have placed very little emphasis on rushing the ball. This is of course Aaron Rodgers’ team and because of that and the stable of receivers at his dispense; it was a pass-happy offense.

The Packers passed 56 percent of the time in 2012. With that, Aaron Rodgers was sacked 51 times. On one hand the common assumption would be that the Packers need to improve the offensive line play. They do, but the real problem here was opposing defensive coordinators scoffed at the Packers feeble attempt at a running game.

Over the course of the season the Packers accumulated 1,702 yards on the ground spread out amongst nine different ball carriers. Aaron Rodgers accounted for 259 of those yards and Randall Cobb 132. The leading rusher, Alex Green, rushed for just 464 yards with 3.4 yard average and no touchdowns. Having no regard for the Packers ability to rush the ball, defenses came after Rodgers fast and furious. The common analogy was defensive linemen were just pinning their ears back and coming for Rodgers.

Kirby Lee/Image of Sport-USA TODAY Sports

With the additions of running backs Eddie Lacy from Alabama and Johnathan Franklin from UCLA the Packers add young talent, but also an interesting mix of running styles. Lacy is a power back and has been compared to Frank Gore. Franklin has a little wiggle and speed and draws comparisons to Shane Vereen of New England, and others liken him to Maurice Jones-Drew of Jacksonville.

With the addition of Lacy and Franklin at least two of the Packers six running backs from last year will not be returning for 2012. Ryan Grant is already a free-agent; therefore the favorite to be the odd man out is Cedric Benson. However, Alex Green, DuJuan Harris, James Starks, and even the legendary John Kuhn are all equally sharing the hot seat, as it would be unusual for the Packers to carry six running backs on the active roster.

It is apparent with the addition of Lacy and Franklin that the Packers want to earn some respect on the ground rushing the ball. It will create what Thompson and McCarthy are always reciting, competition. And the competition should be fierce.

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

All of the returning Packers running backs have at one point in time or another shined or shown promise. James Starks has been hampered by injury, but has demonstrated that when healthy he can be a threat.

DuJuan Harris in a small sample size was impressive in the latter portion of last season. Alex Green has potential and was probably called upon last year to do too much. Third down back might be the best role for him.

The running game opens up the passing game. Between the returning backs and the additions through the draft the Packers on paper look to be improving in the ground game.

A rotation of Lacy, Franklin, Harris and Starks offers a variety of different looks and will be interesting to see the 2013 backfield develop.

Without saying a word, the Packers put these three running backs on notice while upping the ante, increasing the competition and putting on full display their lack of confidence in that phase of the game.

As a team, the Packers ran the ball an average of 27.1 times per game in 2012, so it wasn’t like they got completely away from the attempt to show they could do it. However, they averaged just 3.9 yards per attempt and 106.4 per game, finishing twentieth overall in the league.

So, what’s wrong with that, you say? Nothing, if you’re satisfied with mediocrity.

Compare that with the Washington Redskins, who finished first overall in the league. Washington carried the ball 32.4 times per game, averaging 5.2 yards per carry and 169.3 yards per game.

That’s a big difference.

The Packers longest run from scrimmage was 41 yards and the one bit of good news was that they fumbled just four times.

The mediocre statistics for the Packers was a focal point for Thompson in this year’s draft – and rightly so.

The Packers, who started their season with Cedric Benson as their starter, was just beginning to see some production from the veteran when he went down with the dreaded lisfranc foot injury against the Indianapolis Colts. Next up was Alex Green, who led the team with 464 yards. While he was a steady player for the most part, Green didn’t seem to have the acceleration and cutting ability because he was coming off a serious knee injury suffered the year before. He wasn’t himself. James Starks made an attempt at a comeback of his own, but went down with a knee injury not long after coming back and was lost for the remainder of the season.

Alex Green Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

While DuJuan Harris, the diminutive ball of energy, inserted some spunk and power into the Packers game at the end of the season, it’s clear that he isn’t a three-down back. He could be a productive change of pace back for the Packers this season and because of that, will most likely stick.

But with the new guys coming in, a whole new attitude and energy should come with them. One of the best competitions to watch as the Packers begin their early season workouts, OTAs and then get into Training Camp will be among the running backs.

We’re sure Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy will have an eye glued to that part of the field as well.

Stay tuned …

However, he also doesn’t write off the Packers and also makes mention of the Denver Broncosas another team that might have an interest in Jackson.

Cedric Benson went down with injury early in the year. Will the Packers bring him back?
Mary Langenfeld-USA TODAY Sports

The real question on this end is whether the Packers have an actual interest in Jackson. There have been no rumblings coming from anyone associated with the Packers on any type of interest or even any contact with the runner who is a perennial 1,000-yard rusher. The Packers running game was in a shambles last year after Cedric Benson went down with a foot injury a few weeks into the season. The Packers attempted to push second-year runner Alex Green into the position, but it was clear after a few weeks that he wasn’t going to be the guy. oft-injured James Starks made a brief comeback and showed some of his 2010 abilities, but he, too, went down with injury. The Packers then turned to DuJuan Harris late in the season and he showed some spunk and power – however, most agree he would be most effective as a change-of-pace back and not an every down back. And while the Packers brought back Ryan Grant late in the season, he was mostly ineffective and won’t be brought back in 2013. Jackson would fill that role as he not only runs with power, but catches the ball out of the backfield well. Whether Ted Thompson would want to commit – or whether he has the money to commit – to Jackson is a question only he can answer. The Packers are around $21 million under the salary cap, but when you start adding up the funds that will be needed to sign restricted free agents, draft choices and undrafted free agents, you’re looking at least $7 million. That still leaves the Packers with what might seem plenty of cash until you look at who they have yet to sign – quarterback Aaron Rodgers and linebacker Clay Matthews - for sure – and possibly defensive lineman B.J. Raji.

Will DuJuan Harris be a big part of the Packers running game in 2013?
Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Just Rodgers alone is going to command more than $20 million per year and Matthews will most likely get at least half that, so the bank account will be quickly depleted. The only way Thompson frees up more money is if he cuts ties with tight end Jermichael Finley, who’s due a bunch of money at the end of March, or linebacker A.J. Hawk, who will be due more than $5 million this year. Those are intriguing situations which have Packers Nation divided at this time, but will be resolved sometime soon. So, in the end, Jackson may end up going to Atlanta or Denver because the Packers can’t afford it. Though Jackson is right – from a football standpoint, having him in the Green and Gold does make a lot of sense. Stay tuned.

The injuries continue to get worse for the Packers as a season filled with injuries has once again gotten worse.

Running back Cedric Benson has had foot surgery to repair his lisfranc injury suffered in week five at Indianapolis, effectively ending his season. Benson was placed on IR shortly after the injury but thanks to new NFL rules would have been able to return eight weeks after the injury.

Benson was hopeful to return agains the Bears in Mid-December for the showdown that will likely decide the division. However, his injury hadn’t healed as he and doctors had planned, thus his only option was to have surgery.

Just as the injury situation was starting to look good for the Packers as they were getting Gregg Jennings and Clay Matthews back from injuries this week, and Charles Woodson, Sam Shields and Andrew Quarles in the upcoming weeks, the Packers learned Benson would be shut down for the rest of the season.

The loss of Benson for the remainder of the year, including the playoffs, puts the Packers all the way back at square one. We saw last season that James Starks couldn’t get the job done in the regular season, but the Packers’ pass offense masked many problems last season en route to a 15-1 record. This season is different for Green Bay. They haven’t been as effective through the air as they have been in the past, and the running game has been invisible.

The Packers will ride James Starks and Alex Green for the remainder of the season.

As for Benson’s future with Green Bay, he was signed to a one-year deal in August. It’s hard seeing the Packers bringing him back, especially if they take a running back early in the 2013 draft, which could be a strong possibility. Benson finished the season with 248 yards on 71 carries and a touchdown.

The Packers are into the bye week as this will be Mike McCarthy’s chance to look back at the season and see who has gotten the job done and who has played below expectations.

The Packers have had some closer-than-expected games including the one two weeks ago against Jacksonville. The Packers have three players in particular who will need to step up their play or could lose playing time

TE Jermichael Finley

Jermichael Finley has probably been one of the biggest disappointments for the Packers so far this year as he has been averaging three yards less per reception than his career average.

Finley had his most catches in one game this season week 1 when he had 7 versus the 49ers while the most receiving yards he had in one game came in week 3 versus Seattle when he had 60 receiving yards.

Finley has not been as good as in the past which has hurt the Packers offense. Green Bay will need Jermichael Finley to step up and get the job done or he could lose his starting spot and potentially be cut this offseason.

Green Bay Packers running back James Starks. Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Packers Running Backs

The Packers’ running game is probably one of the worst in the NFL as Alex Green and James Starks have not gotten the job done since Cedric Benson was injured.

Alex Green was listed as the starter at running back but the Packers don’t trust him to be reliable as James Starks got more carries last week than Green. Green has also only averaged 3.1 yards per carry which is way below average for an NFL running back while Starks’s averaged just 3.6 yards per carry last week.

Starks and Green have both struggled and the Packers may look to some free agent running backs if Starks and Green do not step up their play soon.

Green Bay Packers center Jeff SaturdayJeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Packers’ Offensive Line

The Green Bay offensive line has struggled as Aaron Rodgers has been sacked a crazy 29 times which is one of the most in all the NFL.

Even if you take out the eight times Rodgers was sacked against Seattle, the Packers have still given up sacks at an alarming rate. The season could fall apart if Rodgers got injured. Marshall Newhouse has been playing better but he is going to have to play at an elite level as he will still have to deal with some elite pass rushers like Julius Peppers.

The Packers offensive line has some players who know how to play at an elite level like Josh Sitton and Jeff Saturday but the line will need to play better or Packers fans may have to start worrying if the high number of hits Rodgers takes will lead to an injury.

Remember, it’s only preseason … Remember, it’s only preseason … Remember, it’s only preseason … Remember, it’s only preseason …

That’s what we have to keep repeating.

It doesn’t count in the record books and thank God that’s the reality. But we still have to look at the 35-10 shellacking the Packers took from the Cleveland Browns Thursday night as disconcerting.

It is only the second time the Packers have started 0-2 in preseason during the Mike McCarthy regime … it’s very uncharacteristic for a McCarthy-coached team to look this bad.

Yeah, you can point to the injuries; you can point to the fact that most of the game was played by second-, third- and fourth-stringers; you can point to the fact that everyone made a mistake in this one – even McCarthy who was flagged 15 yards for throwing the challenge flag at the wrong time.

Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson (87) celebrates. Benny Sieu-US PRESSWIRE

Aside from the Aaron Rodgers-to-Jordy-Nelson connection for a touchdown in the first quarter, there wasn’t a whole lot to shout about. Though it’s a loss, again, it doesn’t count.

What we should be worried about is that it was a loss to the Cleveland Browns – yes, that same Browns team that has stunk up the league for the past decade. The question we must ask this morning is this: Are the Browns that good or are the Packers sinking to Cleveland’s level of badness?

What’s going to happen when the Packers play a really good team, like next week against the Bengals? Or when they open the season against the 49ers and then have to host the Bears?

Well, here are a few initial thoughts I’ve had this morning as I feel bad:

• Graham Harrell isn’t an NFL quarterback and Ted Thompson should have Mike Holmgren and Colt McCoy on speed dial;

• The running game, especially Alex Green, didn’t look all that bad last night;

• D.J. Smith is going to be an unsung hero for the Packers this year;

• Jordy Nelson is going to again lead the Packers in receiving this year;

• The second string offensive line is just that – offensive;

• The young players the Packers have in the secondary are energetic, talented and getting ready for prime time. However, they are very green;

• I can’t wait to see what Cedric Benson can do in this offense;

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb had a rough night.Benny Sieu-US PRESSWIRE

• Randall Cobb isn’t standing out like everyone said he would be and his fumble in the first quarter was inexcusable;

• Charles Woodson is again going to be a huge factor for the defense;

• Where was Nick Perry?; and

Remember, it’s only preseason … Remember, it’s only preseason … Remember, it’s only preseason … Remember, it’s only preseason …

Raymond T. Rivard photograph

With the news that Jahvid Best, the Detroit Lions’ best bet for starting back, will not be uniform for the start of the 2012 regular season – he’s been relegated to the physically unable to perform list – is there a former Packer in the team’s future?

Throw in the fact that behind Best for the Lions are perpetual underachiever Kevin Smith and bad boy Mikel Leshoure and one might think that Ryan Grant might be a possibility.

You might remember that Grant had a visit to Detroit embedded into his GPS in May, but that trip was cancelled for inexplicable reasons. At the time, many thought it was because they believed he was headed back to Green Bay.

That didn’t happen either.

Instead, the Packers decided to go with two backs returning from serious knee injuries – Alex Green and James Starks, as well as second-year man Brandon Saine and rookie undrafted free agent Marc Tyler.

That was all well and good until the wheels in Green Bay started falling off. Saine went down to injury, Green wasn’t quite 100 percent and Starks hasn’t been all the Packers want. In their first preseason game, Tyler looked pretty good, but his stock dropped when he fumbled on the Packers’ final possession as they were attempting to score as the clock was winding down.

Immediately, the thought turned to Grant – he’s the back who knows the system and would be the perfect fit.

But not for Ted Thompson. Instead he went out and got Cedric Benson for a song, clearly looking to move in an entirely new direct, left Grant without a team.

Enter the Lions who have as bad of a situation in their backfield as the Packers. A logical choice for Detroit would be Grant, but no move has been made in that direction.

Could it still happen? Sure. There’s plenty of time to get him into camp and acclimated to their system. Obviously, that wouldn’t be something Packers fans would like to see.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

With news breaking Friday night that the Green Bay Packers had brought running back Cedric Benson in and that signing him was “probable,” it sounds like probable is now turning to reality.

According to a post by Paul Imig on the FOXSportsWisconsin.com website today, his sources, which include Packers running back Alex Green, indicate that Benson could be in camp and ready for practice Monday morning.

“I was informed today that Cedric Benson will be coming in, so that’s a great thing for us,” Green told Imig Sunday afternoon. “It’ll help the team out. He’s a great running back. That’ll be a great thing for us to learn from and get a better feel for the running back position.”

You might remember that Benson was originally selected by the Chicago Bears and stayed in the Windy City for three years before falling into disfavor. In his three years there, Benson never reached 700 yards rushing in a single season.

However, when he landed in Cincinnati, his fortunes turned. He ran for 1,000 yards three straight years and helped the improving Bengals to a Playoff berth last year.

Benson can only be an upgrade to the Packers’ pathetic running game. Though both James Starks and Ryan Grant combined for more than 1,000 yards in rotation last year, the Packers continually relied on its passing game to carry the team. When the Packers decided not to re-sign Grant and go with Starks and second-year runners Alex Green and Brandon Saine, they thought they had enough horses in the stable. However, Starks had a horrible outing last Thursday night at San Diego, Green still isn’t back completely from his injured knee and Saine has been out of action for the past week.

Ted Thompson had to do something and with the availability of Benson, I believe he made another good move.

Bringing in Benson takes some pressure off the rest of the running backs. Like the defense which was addressed in the offseason, the need to add another body in the backfield was a no-brainer. With Benson there may be some downside, but it’s definitely worth the risk.

I like what Imig said in his post:

If Benson is able to do a good job in pass protection for Packers MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers and can help resurrect Green Bay’s struggling running game, this could turn out to be a significant signing for a team that hopes to win its second Super Bowl in three seasons.

Cedric Benson – Green Bay Packers. Could they become synonymous?

Well, the news as originally reported early Friday evening by Chris Mortenson of ESPN that Benson was in Green Bay and was poised to be signed by Ted Thompson.

Though as of late last night the deal hadn’t been sealed, it looked impending and was described as “probable.”

The Packers’ running game is in disarray. James Starks, the rookie phenom who helped lead the Packers to their most recent Super Bowl, hasn’t been the answer, Brandon Saine is watching from the sidelines with an injury, Alex Green is being eased back into playing shape after last year’s knee injury and Marc Tyler looked decent in Thursday’s preseason opener until he fumbled on the final play of the game.

Though still unsigned, the Packers don't seem interested in bring Ryan Grant back. Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

The Packers could have brought back Ryan Grant, the Packers’ main man the past four years, but don’t seem willing to go in that direction. He remains unsigned.

Enter Benson, who at 29 is coming off three straight 1,000 yard seasons at Cincinnati and may be considered a retread by many. This is the age at which most running backs hit the wall and show decline. Apparently the Packers are willing to take that chance. Maybe Ted Thompson knows something we don’t about the bruising between-the-tackles back. Maybe he just thinks it’s time the team bulk up its running game and take some pressure off the league’s MVP.

Whatever the reason, it will be interesting to see what Benson can bring to balance the Packers already-vaunted passing attack. The hope is that it can make it an even better offense – and judging from the initial look at the Packers running game Thursday night, it just might need that boost.

It will be fun to watch.

Detroit Lions 2012 Schedule Preview: Green Bay Packers

Our preview of the Detroit Lions’ 2012 schedule continues with the Green Bay Packers.

To catch up on all the lastest from Cheeseland, I was able to get together with Ray Rivard, editor at Lombardi Ave, and he was kind enough to answer my questions.

1. What is your initial reaction to the Packers’ 2012 draft?

Ray Rivard: I was somewhat astounded, but pleasantly surprised with the tactics employed by Packers’ GM Ted Thompson when he traded up to retool the defense. I was very happy that all but two of their picks were on the defensive side of the ball. Clearly, Thompson not only went with the best players available, but the best defensive players. Thompson would have been hung out to dry by the fan base had he not drafted for defense. Given that the Packers finished dead last in defense last year – that’s dead last in the entire league – obviously it was time to revamp what they had in house. So, to answer your question – I was very pleased with the Packers’ 2012 draft.

2. The NFC North looks to be strong this season, any worries that the Bears or Lions could knock off the Packers as division champs?

RR: I’m always concerned with divisional games. It doesn’t matter how up or down teams are during any given year, those games are always monumental battles. So, the bottom line is that I’m very concerned with the Bears or Lions knocking off the Packers this year. Not only that, but we all know the Vikings could be spoilers this season as they rebuild. But as for the Bears and Lions – both teams have improved themselves significantly in the draft and through free agency and will be vying for a division championship. It will come down to some epic games this year.

3. Where are the Packers most vulnerable and what will be their greatest strength this season?

RR: The Packers’ greatest vulnerability will probably be with the uncertainty of the defense. We all know what’s been done to put the pieces in place for improvements on that side of the ball. However, having the pieces is one thing – to be able to utilize those pieces and fit them into the scheme is another. One thing is for certain – the Packers’ defense can’t get any worse – they can only go up from where they were last year. That said, if we look to the offense, the running game is another vulnerability that will be interesting to watch. With Ryan Grant gone from the scene, the Packers will look toward two players coming off serious knee injuries to be their main men – James Starks and Alex Green. Second-year player Brandon Saine might surprise a lot of people, as well. He catches the ball out of the backfield very well and is big enough to run between the tackles. He will push for more playing time this season.

The team’s greatest strength is a no-brainer. When you’ve got Aaron Rodgers as your quarterback and a receiving corps that’s as deep as the well to hell, there’s no reason why this year’s edition shouldn’t play even better than last year. That’s a scary thought considering the numbers the 2011 edition of the Packers’ offense put up. With the hope that injuries don’t cause issues, this should be a fun team to watch.

4. Have the last two regular seasons changed the way Packers fans view the regular season?

RR: Not really. For the past two decades, which is the time many, many Packers fans have been alive, the expectations have always been for a winning season, if not a divisional championship. There are many fans who only remember Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers as the team’s quarterbacks. Yes, there are many of us who go back 40-50 years with the team, but most are accustomed to winning year in and year out.

5. What are your expectations for the Packers in 2012?

RR: Is the expectation that the Packers will win 15 games again this year? Yeah, that’s the expectation, but the reality is that the team will probably win 12. They will have to win that many for a division crown. If they get 13 or 14, that will be icing on the cake. I expect the team to be playoff-bound again this year, either as the division winner or a wild card. And anything short of a Super Bowl berth will be a huge disappointment. The talent is too deep and the organization too sound to stand for anything else. However, to get there is difficult, as we all know showed through last year with the loss to the Giants in the first round of the playoffs. Packers fans expect the Lombardi trophy to be coming home every year. Our expectations are the highest they’ve ever been, but we all know this is the National Football League where anything can and probably will happen.

Not to go too far out on a limb, I’m saying it will be the Packers vs. the Texans in the Super Bowl this year. Packers 27 Texans 23.

It should definitely be another fun run with the Packers.

Green Bay Packers – Fantasy Football Preview 2012

Jul 17th, 2012 at 12:00 pm by Zachary Thompson

Fantasy football leagues are activating across the country and draft dates are being set and obsessed over. Last season, one offense everybody loved owning and a defense they loved playing against was the Green Bay Packers. The Pack are looking to bring back the offense and overhaul the defense. Ray Rivard of Lombardi Ave. was willing to join us and help us get some insider information on the cheeseheads’ outlook for this season.

Zach Thompson, FantasyCPR: The Packers offense was awesome last year. Aaron Rogers emerged as one of the top QB’s in the league to be sure. Is there any reason to think he won’t reduplicate that statistical performance this year?

Ray Rivard, Lombardi Ave.: If Aaron Rodgers doesn’t match or exceed hisperformance of 2011, it will be a huge disappointment. Rodgers has the same weapons coming back with him in 2012 and there isn’t any reason why this team can’t continue to produce huge numbers on the field. In fact, without injuries, you can be sure to see Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson continue to put up 1,000 yard-plus seasons. When those two players have backups like James Jones and Donald Driver behind them – players who could be starters on most other teams - this is one high-powered offense. And it’s all led by Rodgers. His skill and uncanny ability to avoid pressure has made Rodgers a step above the best QBs in the league. I can only see him improve in 2012.

Z: Last year, virtually any Green Bay WR was worth owning just because he was on the same field with Aaron Rodgers? Jordy Nelson made the leap to a top 20 WR. Do you see Randall Cobb or any other receiver emerging this year as a every-week go-to guy?

Ray Rivard, Lombardi Ave.: Many, including myself, see this as a breakout year for Randall Cobb. I believe the league has only seen a scratching of the surface with this receiver. His work on special teams is known, but he will bring much more to the field this year. You will see him on the field more often this season and his touches rise significantly. If the Packers can’t get the ball into his hands at least 5-10 time per game, it will be disappointing. And depending on how much Donald Driver contributes, you might see either Diondre Borel or Tori Gurley make the 53-man roster and make contributions. They are young guys with huge upsides. I would also like to say that tight end Jermichael Finley will work to improve his play this year and will continue to stretch the field for a
Packers offense that will be difficult to stop.

Z: While we’re on receivers, was Jordy Nelson’s breakout a fluke or do you think he’ll match or exceed those numbers this year?

Ray Rivard, Lombardi Ave.: Jordy Nelson is no fluke. His teammates like to joke that he’s the white guy on the team who actually has speed and jumping ability. Nelson gets open and his ability to accelerate past defensive backs is fast becoming his biggest strength. Simply put – he’s a stud who can beat anyone matched up against him.

Couple that with the fact that he can catch the ball over the middle when needed and you’ve got the complete package. His only knock is that he drops too many passes. However, his success overshadows that. If you have a chance to take Jordy Nelson in your fantasy draft, don’t pass him up. He will score lots of points for you.

Z: What about the running game? Do you see one back emerging as a feature-back or will it continue to be a time-share? If you think it’sa time-share, what Packer running back would you draft to be on your fantasy team?

Ray Rivard, Lombardi Ave.: The Packers running game is the wild card for any fantasy team. The Packers are a pass-first team, that’s not a secret. However, the Packers have not been totally incompetent on the ground either. Ryan Grant is gone, and the Packers will have two backs, James Starks and Alex Green, coming back from significant knee injuries. That is a concern. However, Starks is being looked to as the featured back heading into his third year. Green had a huge upside before his injury, so how he comes back is a huge question mark. He could be one of those players who comes out of nowhere to make a big mark, but I wouldn’t count on it.

Z: Is there a player on the Packers offense you think will have a breakout year?

Ray Rivard, Lombardi Ave.: Randall Cobb, hands down. I feel the Packers will call his number more this year and give him the opportunity to show his skills. He was limited last year on offense because of the team’s depth, but with an aging Donald Driver still on the team I see Cobb being more of a factor.

Z: Green Bay’s focus this offseason appears to have been on rebuilding and strengthening their defense, specifically pass defense. Do you think they did enough? And who do you think makes the biggest impact among the new additions?

Ray Rivard, Lombardi Ave.: Defense was the focus in both free agency and the draft – and rightly so. Ted Thompson did a great job in bringing in players who should contribute immediately – namely Nick Perry, Jerel Worthy, and Casey Hayward. I see all three of these players fitting in immediately with the defense, but I see Worthy as the player who will bring the most to the team in the early going. The Packers’ biggest hole last season was their defensive front. They couldn’t stop teams because they couldn’t pressure the QB.

The loss of Cullen Jenkins was bigger than most thought. With the addition of Worthy, the Packers will add to a line that already includes BJ Raji and Ryan Pickett. Though suspended for eight games, Anthony Hargrove will also help the team the second half of the season – if he makes the roster.

Z: Last one, give me your realistic expectation for the Packers this season, and then your perfect scenario. What is the one key for them taking home the Lombardi Trophy again this year?

Ray Rivard, Lombardi Ave.: Realistically the team wins at least 12 games -they will need that many wins to take the division. Ideally, they win 14 or 15 again this year and destroy the competition in the Playoffs
en route to another Super Bowl championship.

However, to do that, the team has got to make large improvements on the defensive side of the football. I think management has put the pieces in place for that to happen. Now it’s up to the coaching staff to put these players in the right schemes to make it happen. It’s funny talking about defense being the difference for a team like the
Packers. While the offense will continue to do what it does best, it will be the defense that will be the difference in the fight for a championship. If the defense doesn’t come through, the team will be left watching like they did last year.

Raymond T. Rivard photograph

Ryan Grant, the former number one running back with the Green Bay Packers, has fallen off not only the Packers’ radar, but everyone else’s – or so it seems.

But in an interview recently with the National Football Post, Grant’s agent, Alan Herman, said. In fact, that Grant will be playing for a National Football League team before it’s said and done – but it most likely won’t be for the Packers.

The Packers’ leading rusher before his season-ending injury in 2010, Grant made a comeback last year and played side-by-side with fellow running back James Starks. In fact, running as a tandem for the team, Starks and Grant put up nearly identical numbers – Grant had 559 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 134 carries, while Starks had 578 and two touchdowns on one less rushing attempt before ending his year with a knee injury against Tampa Bay.

The Packers also lost last year’s rookie Alex Green midway through the year to a knee injury and ended the year playing Grant and rookie Brandon Saine.

Considered the best free agent running back available, Grant’s agent has said there have been some offers, but they haven’t been attractive enough for him. One of the teams interested is the Detroit Lions, but others mentioned have been the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts and even his former team, the New York Giants.

Whomever takes a chance on Grant will get a 29-year-old running back who doesn’t have a lot of mileage on his legs. In my estimation, Grant has at least a couple more seasons in the tank. He can be a value to both the running game and the passing attack.

However, for the Packers, they must feel confident in moving ahead with Starks and Green, with Saine also in the mix – and because the role of the running back is becoming somewhat diminished in today’s pass-first offenses, re-signing a premier running back hasn’t become a priority for many teams.

But for Grant and his agent, they aren’t worried.

“He’s not upset. He’s not nervous,” Herman said. “We’re going to be patient and wait for the right opportunity.”

They might be waiting a bit, but they are probably right – someone will reach out and sign the talented back who has given the Packers some solid seasons.

A couple of weeks ago, we looked at the defensive position battles for the Packers.

Today, we take a look at the Packers’ offensive position battles.

Number 3 Receiver

After last season, Jordy Nelson earned the number two spot on the depth chart at receiver behind Greg Jennings. Now, Randall Cobb, James Jones, and Donald Driver will battle for the third spot on the depth chart at receiver. Cobb provides the biggest speed threat for the Packers in the slot as he could make great route cuts and blow by slower cornerbacks and safeties. Donald Driver is the reliable veteran who konws how to get the job done while James Jones has been the number three guy in the past but he is going to have to do a lot to avoid falling to fifth on the depth chart. Jones will probably be in the five spot as Driver and Cobb will be the final two battling out for the third spot on the receiver depth chart. Driver’s experience will allow him to beat out Cobb as Driver is still a well-rounded receiver.

Dec 11, 2011; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers running back Brandon Saine (33) rushes with the football as guard T.J. Lang (70) blocks during the first quarter at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Backup Running Back

James Starks is now the full-time starter at running back for the Packers but Starks will need the occassional breather and there will be a battle to be his backup between Brandon Saine, Alex Green, and Marc Tyler.

Green is the longshot in this battle as a disappointing training camp could lead him to being released. Undrafted free agent running back Marc Tyler could be a steal as the former USC tailback has all the basics that any solid NFL running back needs. Saine is the favorite as he was third on the depth chart last year and he is a more polished player.

Saine and Tyler will have a great battle but the veteran Saine will win the spot. Tyler could surprise and impress in camp for the Packers. The one thing that could change this battle is if the Packers sign Cedric Benson as Saine and Tyler could be in a spot where they are battling to make the roster.

Nov 20, 2011; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers tight end Andrew Quarless (81) during the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Lambeau Field. The Packers defeated the Buccaneers 35-26. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Second tight end

Jermichael Finley has the starting spot at tight end but behind him there could be a very long battle between Andrew Quarless and rookie D.J. Williams. This could be a surprising battle to most but I think it is realistic. Williams was a steal in the late rounds of the draft as I think he has the potential to be better than even Jermichael Finley when Finley’s contract runs out. Williams was a very effective tight end at Arkansas when they had a very good quarterback in Tyler Wilson. Williams’ game transfers well to the Packers but Andrew Quarless has done well for the Packers and will stay the tight end for the Packers. Williams’s presence could put Tom Crabtree in danger of being cut.

We all know the Green Bay Packers have one of the best, if not the best passing game in all of the National Football League.

On the flip side, we also understand that the Packers have been successful the past few years with a minimal rushing attack. Save for Ryan Grant, who the team has not brought back to date, the Packers have relied on inexperienced running backs and even a fullback (John Kuhn) as their featured backs the past couple of seasons.

Enter Cedric Benson, the former Chicago Bear and Cincinnati Bengal who is now looking for a home. The Bengals have decided to go in a new direction, leaving Benson on the outside.

Rumor has it that in addition to the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders, it looks like the Packers may also have more than a passing interest in signing Benson.

Benson rushed for more than 1,000 yards last year and scored six touchdowns, but the Bengals still have no interest.

With the Packers looking to rely on two running backs (James Starks and Alex Green) who are both coming back to the team after having missed most of last year with serious knee injuries, depth is a concern, as is experience. Benson would provide both.

Though simply a rumor, this move would be a good one for the Packers. Given Packers GM Ted Thompson’s recent run through free agency and the draft, it would seem that he has let up on the reigns of building only through the draft. With his most recent history, Thompson may play the field and make an attempt at signing Benson, who could end his career with a team that has only a Super Bowl Championship in its sights.

Time will tell.

Stay tuned …

Those three should be and will be a reality if the Packers’ quarterback, Super Bowl champion and league Most Valuable Player has his way.

In a Q&A published this morning by the Green Bay Press Gazette, Rodgers doesn’t beat around the bush. He comes right out and says that there’s no other place he would rather be than in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In fact, he want s to be there for the remainder of his career.

Is there any question the Packers bean counters aren’t locked in a room at 1265 Lombardi Avenue trying to figure out a way they can make that happen?

Aaron Rodgers and Ryan Braun are best friends and Rodgers would certainly love to have a lifetime contract much like was given to Braun by the Brewers.

Like his good friend Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers, Rodgers wants a long-term contract that will essentially keep him in a Green Bay Packers uniform for the remainder of his playing days. And you can’t blame him. I’m sure Braun and Rodgers have talked about the fact that Braun has been thought of enough by the Milwaukee franchise to sign him to a contract that will keep him in a Brewers uniform for nearly the next decade.

Rodgers wants something like that.

Here’s some other highlights from Rodgers’ interview:

On his disappointment with the Pro Bowl:

“After the Pro Bowl experience, the things that happened at the hotel, during the week and then in the game, I just thought was so disappointing. Not only myself, the coaching staff that we brought, but to the fans. I mean, I’m sitting there, I bought six tickets as well so I have six people in the stands watching me in the game and I felt I was embarrassed for them so I just felt like it was the right time to say something like that.”

On the trappings of stardom:

“I think you can kind of prepare for some of it but there’s so many things that, opportunities and also temptations and then people trying to take advantage of you that you maybe didn’t see.”

On his achievements and if he still has the drive to succeed:

“I’d say it’s stronger now and I don’t say that to be cliché-ish. It’s just that when you win a Super Bowl, and I talked to other guys who feel the same way, when you win a Super Bowl, the next year you’re on such a high … Then last year losing in the first round of the playoffs, there’s just that empty feeling of regret that you’re not going to experience that same kind of high the Super Bowl was so I’d say personally that’s what I want.”

Aaron Rodgers stepped out from the shadows of Brett Favre and has brought a new enthusiasm to the Packers and the entire league. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

On his feelings toward those who didn’t believe in him when he took over for Brett Favre:

“Yeah, there were a bunch of people, whether they said it or not. That was a difficult time for the organization, our fans. I think the sentiment is that the Packers are doing pretty good now with that decision … But I don’t have any ill will towards other Packer fans or anything that happened that summer. It was such a character growing opportunity I think. It’s easier to say now than back then.”

On future contract talks:

“I think they’re an organization who is going to do what’s best for the organization. Obviously my representation, just like any representation, is trying to get the most money possible at times. I don’t see it being an issue. I want to be a Packer for life and I don’t see myself going anywhere else.”

On the potential for 2012:

“I think you’ve got to be, the kind of guys we’re going to add to the mix. The free agent guys. The rookie guys. Bringing a guy like Alex Green back into the mix. There’s a lot of young guys fighting for spots. I think Mike (McCarthy) has said it before about the talent level that we have. I’ll take this angle: This will be the most difficult cuts that we’ve had in eight years of me being here … The thing I look at is when I think of the schedule, I look at when we’re playing in Chicago, it’s a late game, so that will be a tough one late in the season. So it’s going to be a tough run. What we learned last year was you’ve got to be playing the right way at the end of the season, like we were in 2010 and the Giants were last year.”

And finally, one of the more interesting answers came when asked about the most difficult part of his job. His answer is very interesting. You would think it would be something like learning a new offense or studying a defensive scheme or getting his footwork down. No, it was none of that.

Here’s what he had to say about that:

“Turning it off. Finding ways to escape from being on all the time. Having to be in the mindset of that preparation and that focus when I’m at the facility, being able to turn that off. That doesn’t mean just when I get home at 4:30 or whatever. That’s being able to turn it off at midnight when I’m trying to fall asleep and I can’t. That’s probably the hardest part.”

It’s always good to hear from Aaron Rodgers and as we inch closer to the start of the NFL Training Camp, it’s even better to hear from him, especially when he provides such insight into his persona.

The hope of all Packers fans is that Aaron Rodgers will be winding up to throw bombs for years to come. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

There’s a reason Aaron Rodgers is a champion and the MVP of the league. Our hope is that he is around for many more seasons to come and that he stays injury-free. Packers fans, of course want Aaron Rodgers to walk away from the game a whole person without the problems so many others have experienced over the years.

And if you think Aaron Rodgers is ready for 2012, below are some highlights from 2011 that will surely get the juices flowing. No, the Packers didn’t repeat as Super Bowl champions last year, but the team went 15-2 on the season. There were plenty of highlights … enjoy …

However, it looks like his days in Green Bay are numbered. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

Surely Packers brass aren’t going to come out and talk about it, but I feel there are more than a few reasons the team isn’t considering bringing running back Ryan Grant back to Green Bay.

However, for me, the tipping point was the fumble Grant gave up in the Divisional Playoff Game last January against the New York Giants. Though it wasn’t a game-changer and one of a bazillion turnovers the Packers gave up that day, I think the team leaders lost confidence in the running back who provided so much potential, but never really gave the team what they expected from a veteran. Throw in the fact that he will be demanding more than they want to pay him and the Packers will surely just let him walk.

Grant carried the ball 134 times last season for 559 yards (4.2 yard average) and two touchdowns last season. Not statistics one would point to as impressive for the team’s starting running back.

He has spent all five of his professional seasons with the Green Bay Packers and has overall been a valuable and productive player. The team acquired him in 2007 trade with the New York Giants and he was immediately thrust onto the field. He ran for 956 yards that season and then followed that with two straight 1,200 yard-plus seasons. In 2008, he ran for 1,203 yards and had another 1,200-plus season in 2009. An injury in the first game of the season at Philadelphia in 2010 not only hurt his career, but also put the team in a pickle until James Starks came alive late in the season to help lead the Packers to a Super Bowl.

Grant has run for 4,016 yards and a 4.3 yard average during his time in Green Bay and has also caught 92 passes for nearly 1,000 yards.

Needless to say, he’s been a valuable player … you could say he is a star. But his star power isn’t enough for the Packers to bring him back.

So, where does that leave the team? Well, not with much experience, that’s for sure. James Starks was a stud during the Packers’ Super Bowl run in 2010, but was injured again last year and hasn’t played an entire season yet. Alex Green, the team’s high draft choice last year is also coming off a knee injury and is yet to be seasoned. Brandon Saine showed some good hands and burst as a rookie last season and the team is most likely looking toward him to offer a third down alternative in 2012. Even fullback John Kuhn has been utilized as a running back in the past – he took over in the backfield in 2010 when Grant went down for the year with an injury and Brandon Jackson did nothing for the team.

Throw in these free agent signings: Duane Bennett from Minnesota, Marc Tyler from the University of Southern California, and Nicholas Cooper from Winston-Salem State, and one can see that the Packers have plenty of bodies, but very little experience.

Consider also that the Packers are a pass-first offense and one can see why Coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson are satisfied with what they have in-house and are not concerned with letting Grant walk.

The main concern for Packers fans, of course, is that Grant is poised to sign with the Detroit Lions. Many say let them have him and his veteran salary. But in the backs of everyone’s minds is the notion that Grant would come back to haunt the team. McCarthy and Thompson don’t seem to be concerned about that.

Would the Packers look for another veteran to sign should Grant move on? I doubt it. With the team’s philosophy of drafting and developing, it’s highly unlikely … there are plenty of horses in the stable to develop. This could be a breakout year for Starks and if Green comes back healthy he could add the potential for a one-two punch the Packers would need. Throw in the pass catching skills that Saine showed out of the backfield last season and the team could be OK at the position.

However, it’s a big “if.” Everyone has to stay healthy for it to come together.

If they don’t, people will point to the neglect of Grant as a mistake. If they do, everyone will ask, “Ryan who …?”

Here are Ryan Grant’s career statistics with the Packers:

It’s finally here. NFL. Draft. Day.

After all gnashing of teeth, indigestion and heated arguments, it’s time to throw all the mocks away and get ready for the reality check that is the actual naming of names.

When Commissioner Roger Goodell heads to the podium tonight to announce the first pick of the much ballyhooed first round, we can all start with a tabula rasa – a blank slate.

Frankly, I’m looking forward to it. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of the bazillion mocks, the upsides, downsides, 40-yard dash times, the vertical leaps and the best player available. I feel all those things should kept to those in the war rooms and to let them do their jobs.

Now, as journalists, our job is to take a look at what transpires and then use our worldly knowledge to pick apart team drafts and start assigning grades and opinions about the winners and losers.

As for the Green Bay Packers, it’s time to Trust in Ted. Though we know the general manager is probably in control in the Packers’ draft room, we also know that he is getting information and birds tweeting in his ear right up until the time the phone call is made and the trigger pulled … but you also know that head coach Mike McCarthy is getting his two cents worth in as well. We wonder just how influential he is in the final decision. He’s got to have some say. After all, he is the guy who has to work with these players.

Anyway, get excited. I, for one, am looking forward to this draft. While I feel the team has got to draft defensive players up front, I am really excited to see if the team goes away from what all the experts are saying and pulls players that might not be at the top of everyone’s list. Thompson has been known to do that before. Let’s just forget about Justin Harrell and Mike Neal and move on.

So, without further adieu, here is a look at the Packers potentials for tonight. Take a look.

However, a bit of advice – you might want to ignore it once the teams are on the clock. Just like all the mocks that have been developed over the past few months, this piece will probably be null and void once the action starts tonight. But we’ll see.

You can also see this posting at NFL Mocks.

Q. What are the team needs for the Green Bay Packers heading into the draft?

The loss of Nick Collins could play a major role in how the Packers draft this weekend. Jason O. Watson-US PRESSWIRE

A. Defense. Defense. Defense. The Packers ranked dead last among the 32 teams in 2011 and it was no accident. The Dom Capers-led unit was clearly hurt by the losses of defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins and the injury to Nick Collins. They were a unit without leadership and purpose.

Ted Thompson’s first goal will be to restock the defensive line and linebacker positions. If he can also throw in a solid defensive back, he will be even further ahead. With 12 total picks, Thompson might just do some wheeling and dealing, especially in the first couple of rounds, but he could also surprise everyone and deal down to accumulate even more picks. But given the fact that 12 drafted rookies would have a very difficult time cracking the lineup of a team that went 15-2 last season, I highly doubt Thompson would look to add quantity over quality.

Look for the Packers to draft either a defensive lineman or outside linebacker with the first couple of picks; and then follow those picks up with an offensive lineman, a defensive back, a running back and a quarterback in the later rounds. The rest will be simply players to pad the roster and add competitive depth.

Q. Who are some prospects you’d like to see end up with the Green Bay Packers?

USC's Nick Perry could be a great pick if he's still on the board. Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

A. I would love to see the Packers add a defensive lineman such as a Melvin Ingram, Quinton Coples or a Courtney Upshaw, but we all know they most likely will be quickly nabbed in the early picks of the first round. However, if a Nick Perry or Whitney Mercilus is still on the board when the Packers pick at 28, Thompson should pull the Trigger. However, we wouldn’t kick a Vin Curry, Andre Branch or a Chandler Jones out of bed either. Peter King says the Packers will pick Michigan State’s defensive tackle Jerel Worthy, which could be a coup for the longterm and a solid pick for the Packers. Another intriguing prospect who might be an interesting defensive pick and who would be a great pick for the Green Bay Packers is Boise State’s Shea McClellin – I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Thompson go after him.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Packers’ need for depth and longterm effect on the line is evident. Left tackle and center are the two most glaring needs, but quality is always most important when considering drafting for the line. Of course, Peter Konz’s name always comes to the forefront, but Thompson’s effort to grab center Jeff Saturday has softened the need for the team to go after a top-rated center right away. Thompson’s ability to pick solid linemen in the later rounds is well-known and he may even be able to land an undrafted free agent who could help the team.

Picking a running back and even a quarterback, in my estimation, is just as important. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Packers put a premium on a running back who could add to its already somewhat solid stable. Ryan Grant is probably gone, and with injuries to James Starks and last year’s rookie Alex Green, the Packers are left with second year man Brandon Saine. You might see the team try to draft Chris Polk out of Washington, or a Doug Martin out of Boise State.

Would Kirk Cousins be a good pickup for the Packers? Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

At quarterback, the Packers have more of a need than Thompson has admitted. The loss of Matt Flynn moves untested Graham Harrell to number two. The need is evident, but Thompson most likely will draft to develop at the position. A Kirk Cousins from Michigan State is an intriguing prospect, and might be available to the team around the fourth round. But don’t count out a Ryan Lindley of San Diego State or even Russell Wilson from right here in Wisconsin.

Q. What would represent a successful draft in your opinion?

A. If the Packers can nab a solid defensive lineman (defensive end or tackle), an outside linebacker that can be a bookend for Clay Matthews to draw some attention away from him, an offensive lineman, a running back and a quarterback, the Packers will have had a successful draft. I don’t see Ted Thompson moving too far away from the team’s obvious needs, though he says he doesn’t draft that way. According to him, it’s always the best player on the board. Well, in my estimation, that’s fine, but at some point the team has to address the team needs as well. Last year, Thompson decided to go with who he had at defensive lineman and outside linebacker and it came back to bite the team in the long run. Hopefully, Thompson learned a lesson with that tactic and will look at the overall picture more intently this time around.

Q. Give us a bold prediction for your team.

A. My bold prediction is that Thompson will trade up at least five picks to select USC’s Nick Perry in the first round, giving up a couple of later round picks to do so. Much like he did when the team selected Clay Matthews, I feel that if the Packers can hang on to their 28th pick and nab another in the early to mid-20s, they will have two solid first round selections that will have an immediate impact. The team can afford to give up a couple of later round picks to make that happen.
