In the “cleatgate” incident that has garnered national attention, the woman who ripped Donald Driver’s cleat from a young boy at the Packer player’s annual softball game has apologized and publicly stated she would like to give the shoe back.

The incident involving Donald Driver's cleat, may be nearing a resolution. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

Driver threw his shoes and some other items into the stands just before leaving the field after the softball game Sunday. In a a video posted to the Internet by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Robyn Ereth of Neshkoro, was clearly seen wrestling with a young boy over possession of one of Driver’s cleats. She literally ripped the shoe from the grasp of the young boy who didn’t put up an argument after she gained possession.

Because of the uproar over the incident – Driver himself even tweeted that he wanted to contact the boy to make up for him losing possession of the shoe – the woman came forward Monday saying to the Appleton Post-Crescent, “I recognize that by saying I’m deeply sorry, it may not be enough and sufficient to address the disappointment of this young man on Sunday. I am a huge fan of the Packers and the Timber Rattlers and just overreacted in the excitement of the moment. Therefore, I want to apologize for my actions, and I am trying to locate this fan to provide him the shoe and a person-to-person apology.”

That’s admirable and, of course, the right thing to do.

But Driver beat her to it as he made contact with the boy, Stephen Wagner, and loaded him up with all sorts of memorabilia (see video below of the interview with Wagner).

It’s not Ereth’s fault the situation occurred, but the incident shows the kind of crazed mentality we see all fans experience in the heat of the moment. By coming out and explaining herself, Erath has brought integrity and honesty back to the forefront and for that we have to say thanks.

Our hope is that Ereth and Wagner can meet, apologies made and everyone goes home happy. After all, we’re all Packers fans and we shouldn’t be fighting over something as simple as a shoe, right?

Maybe it’s because it’s been one year since the Packers have lost a game, but there has been a noticeable drop-off in the number of domestic abuse cases attributed to a loss by the Green Bay Packers. We have all heard the stories about how the number of domestic abuse cases in Wisconsin goes up when the Packers lose.

Well, if it’s true, it’s borne out by the following incident that was reported today in the Appleton Post-Crescent.

This woman took things a bit too far.

APPLETON — A drunken woman grabbed her 11-year-old daughter by the neck and choked her on Sunday after becoming angered by the Green Bay Packers game, police said.

The 36-year-old Grand Chute woman was charged Monday in Outagamie County Circuit Court with felony child abuse and misdemeanor counts of bail jumping and disorderly conduct.

Police were called about 8:15 p.m. Sunday to a Grand Chute hotel where the girl told police her mother grabbed her by the neck during the game.
