After selecting defensive end, Datone Jones, from UCLA and running back, Eddie Lacy, from Alabama, it looks like the Green Bay Packers are assembling a pretty good draft so far. Well, expect a lot more from Ted Thompson and his crew on day three of the NFL Draft.

After several day two trades (so complicated the details will give you a headache) the Packers will be going into day three of the draft armed with 10 picks.

Yes, I said 10 picks!

OK, maybe that is not enough to get you excited about rounds 4-7 of the draft, but you should be excited, especially if you are a Packers fan. This is a deep draft with still plenty of talent left on the board, and finding great players in later rounds is Thompson’s calling card.

Simply put, day three of the draft is Thompson’s day. It’s his time to shine and really work his magic. Expect Green Bay to find considerable value and talent on day three.

Now, what will the Packers do with those 10 picks? Maybe they use them as ammunition to trade up and get the players they really like, or maybe they take more bites out of the apple and add more depth and competition at various positions on the roster.

It should be interesting to watch unfold. The Packers still need to add depth at offensive line, safety, wide receiver, outside linebacker, and defensive line. I could also seem them adding another tight end and possibly a quarterback later on.

Let’s look at a few players at these positions Green Bay may target on day three of the draft.

Senior Bowl north squad offensive lineman David Quessenberry of San Jose State. Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Offensive Line

The Packers desperately need to add depth to the offensive line. They may not need to find immediate starters, but they need to add competion at left tackle and center and find depth at guard. Look for versatile players, like Alabama’s Barrett Jones and San Jose State’s David Quessenberry, to help Green Bay solidify their offensive line. Both these players can play multiple positions on the line, and whereas Jones projects more to be an NFL guard or center, Quessenberry has the measurables (6-5, 302 pounds) and quick feet to play left tackle.

Safety

It seems many of the top safeties are off the board after the first two days, but there are still several players left with potential playmaking ability. Green Bay missed out on D.J. Swearinger in the second round and J.J. Wilcox in the third, but if a guy, like Fresno State’s Philip Thomas, falls to Green Bay in the fourth, expect them to take him without hesitation. I have been high on Thomas for a while and like his playmaking ability. He would be a great pick in the fourth round, but the Packers may have to use their extra picks to trade up and get him. Also, look for late-rounders, Tony Jefferson from Oklahoma or Bacarri Rambo from Georgia.

Wide Receiver

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs wide receiver Quinton Patton (4) makes a catch.

A lot of wide receivers came off the board on day two of the draft, but this year’s class is a deep one and provides plenty of options in rounds 4-6.

Quinton Patton from Louisiana Tech may be the best available wideout, but he will more than likely be gone by the time the Packers pick in the fourth round. They could trade up for Patton, but there are plenty of other options out there the Packers could wait until the end of the fourth to select, like Da’Rick Rogers from Tennessee Tech or Cobi Hamilton from Arkansas. Maybe, they wait even longer and take someone like Marques Wilson from Washington State with one of their three fifth round picks.

Outside Linebacker

Look for Green Bay to take another outside linebacker in rounds four or five. Chase Thomas from Stanford could be there in round four and would be a great fit for Green Bay, or maybe a guy like Michael Buchanan from Illinois will fall to the Packers somewhere in the fifth round. There are plenty of “tweener” rushbackers still available. I expect Green Bay to leave the draft with at least one more rushbacker (3-4 OLB) added to their roster.

Tight End

I am actually surprised how many tight ends have come off the board already. I just didn’t have this year’s tight end class rated that high. It doesn’t seem there are many complete tight ends left to select, but look for San Jose State’s Ryan Otten in rounds five or six to provide another receiving option for Green Bay. Dion Sims from Michigan St. and towering 6’7’’ Joseph Fauria from UCLA are still available, but both these players seem like project picks at this point.

North Texas Mean Green quarterback Derek Thompson (7) passes under pressure from Alabama Crimson Tide defensive lineman Jesse Williams. Kelly Lambert-USA TODAY Sports

Defensive Line

The Packers went defensive line in the first round, but I expect them to pick up a nose tackle on day three. They need to continue to add depth to the interior of their defensive line and prepare for Pickett’s eventual departure.

If they could get Jesse Williams from Alabama in the fourth round that would be an excellent pick. Some mock drafts had Williams go to Green Bay in the first or second round. I am surprised he has fallen this far in the draft. However, Green Bay may target Williams, but they would probably have to use their extra picks and trade up into the top of the fourth round to get him.

If the Packers miss out on Williams, look for them to target massive defensive nose tackle, Kwame Geathers, from Georgia in rounds five or six.

It is always difficult to predict where players will go this far in the draft, but I expect Green Bay to have a big day. This is Thompson’s time to shine, and with the talent still left on the board it will provide good theater for the remaining rounds of the draft.

I know, I know … you can’t get enough of the NFL Draft and especially what will be happening at the Green Bay Packers number 26 pick – so here’s a doozy for you – will the Packers draft an offensive lineman and will that player be Alabama center Barrett Jones? How about following that up with a running back – Eddie Lacy?

The question is asked, now scroll down and leave your comment below … no, not really – continue to read the reasoning about why we’re even bringing this up.

Yesterday PredictionMachine.com General Manager Paul Bessire came out with his first round selections and predicted that the Packers would select Jones in the first round pickand then turn around in the second round and select Alabama running back Lacy with the number 55 pick.

What do you think of that? Doubling down on two national champions with their first two picks?

Well, I’m not too sure about either one.

Alabama Crimson Tide running back Eddie Lacy (42) runs with the ball against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish during the 2013 BCS Championship game at Sun Life Stadium.
For months, all the mocks (or at least a good number of them) had either Jones or Lacy as they Packers number one choice, but as the past month has transpired, most have moved away from both of those picks for the Packers.

Jones was said about a month ago to be languishing in his recovery from lis franc foot surgery and that he wouldn’t be ready for the pro teams’ spring practices. Sources from his camp and Jones himself emphatically denied those rumors and said that he would definitely be ready to hit the field in May and June. Though everyone said his draft stock fell into the second and maybe even the third or fourth rounds, not much has been said as of late about the heady lineman who has played all five positions along the offensive line.

There’s no question he would be an excellent choice for the Packers. He is probably one of the smartest players in this year’s draft and wouldn’t have any trouble adapting to the pro game. However, there are those who also rank him somewhere in the middle of the pack among other centers in this draft.

So, whether he’s at the top of Ted Thompson’s draft board won’t be known until late Thursday night.

As for Lacy – he’s come out and said he wouldn’t mind playing for the Packers, but the question is whether he would even fit into the Packers system. He’s a north-south power runner who is best between the tackles. He doesn’t catch the ball well out of the backfield and had a poor pro day that seems to have dropped him out of the first round and into the second.

The one thing he does well that the Packers may like is that he’s a decent blocker – something the Packers require of their running backs.

Is Wisconsin Badgers running back Montee Ball a better pick for the Packers? Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

In my humble opinion, I think the Packers would be better off going with a runner like Montee Ball, Giovani Bernard or Christine Michael. Ball and Bernard may go in the second round, but Michael might be a steal in the later rounds.

So, here’s my take on this prognostication – if the Packers trade back into the second round, they might have a chance at picking up Jones in the second or third rounds, but they should stay away from Lacy. He doesn’t fit the Packers system and they can do better elsewhere.

Ted Thompson will let us know his intentions come Thursday night.

This weekend Green Bay Packers center Evan Dietrich-Smith signed his restrict free agent tender, annointing him immediately as the team’s starter at the position.

We can only venture to guess exactly how long that might last because Packers GM Ted Thompson no doubt has an offensive lineman in his sights to draft. Like all the linemen Thompson targets, the draft pick will have to versatile. It’s not a matter of if Thompson drafts a center, but when. TT can find those lineman gems hidden in the mid to later rounds and we expect that to be the case again this year.

Wisconsin Badgers offensive lineman Travis Frederick
Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

Two centers recently compared side-by-side by Russ Lande of the National Football Post as part of his “Pick your Poison” feature caught my eye. Lande’s expertise in breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of Wisconsin’s Travis Frederick and Alabama’s Barrett Jones is insightful and informative.

In the end, it is Frederick that Lande expects to be chosen first over Jones. Though both have their obvious strengths (Jones is incredibly intelligent and has played all five positions along the line; and Frederick, is simply a better pass and run blocker on all levels), it’s their weaknesses that set the two apart, according to Lande.

Here is how he best describes Frederick’s pass protection strengths:

… he does get his hands inside the DT’s shoulders “to get a good fit” nearly every snap, which allows him to lock on and control his man. Unlike Jones, Frederick is able to bend his knees and sink his hips to pass block with excellent leverage, which combines with his ability “to get a good fit” and his natural strength so that he can stop any straight ahead pass rusher in their tracks. In addition, his blocking with base enables him to slide side to side surprisingly well to maintain in pass pro and adjust to different stunts/games and blitzes.”

In describing Jones’s pass protection strengths, he says:

“Jones has quick feet and is able to get out of stance and set to block fast. He accentuates his quick set-up by delivering a fast and aggressive punch to the DT. In pass protection, when Jones gets his hands on the DT first to slow his initial charge, he is often able to tie man up and keeps him on the LOS.”

But when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of flexibility and bend, it’s those characteristics that give Frederick the upper hand, according to Lande in both pass and run blocking.

Barrett Jones

In the end, Lande says both players will most likely become starters in the NFL, but will have different impacts on their teams. About Jones he says, “[he] will be the tough, scrappy over-achiever who cannot get movement on in-line run blocks and constantly has trouble blocking the big 320+ pound DT’s, both on run blocks and in pass protection.”

This is why Lande feels Frederick will be the better of the two: “Frederick … will never be confused with one of the most athletic centers, but he will be one of the more physically dominant ones in the league. He will get his hands on the defensive lineman and will be able to dictate the play to them.”

It’s Frederick’s physical presence on the field as opposed to Jones’s more cerebral play that will be the difference between the two and the reason why Frederick will probably be taken somewhere in the second round, while Jones will be more in line with a third round selection.

But, as always, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where TT has these two players on his draft board and if he’s even interested in drafting either one or has someone completely different targeted.

A couple of weeks ago, we posted a blog reiterating a post by Walterfootball.com that their sources said Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones’ recovery was slow and that he would most likely start the season on the physically unable to perform list.

How’s that for information from a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend?

The evening I reported the information and that Jones’s draft stock would most likely plummet because of it, I was contacted by a very trusted source from within the Jones camp saying the information was poppycock and that the national champion was way ahead of schedule in his recovery from lisfranc surgery.

The source said he was so far ahead that they thought Jones would be easily ready to participate in the NFL spring practice sessions held after the draft.

Yesterday, Walterfootball.com confirmed that information with a story based on a recent interview with Jones.

The Green Bay Packers, who have been many times linked with the drafting of Jones, should be encouraged by this information. Though Jones may still fall out of the first round, he may still be the best option for the Packers.

A highly intelligent guy with a bachelor and master’s degree, Jones has also done it all on the field – versatility highly regarded by the likes of Ted Thompson. In the interview, Jones talks about when positions along the offensive line came open, he was the first the coaches turned to in filling them. He did it without hesitation and said he would do the same at the pro level, while understanding he would most likely be drafted to play inside on the line.

He also talked about the level of competition he faced, not only from opponents, but more importantly from his teammates on the defensive side of the ball. He said that has prepared him for taking the next step.

Jones might be the best acquisition the Packers may add through the draft – and if he’s available in the second round – he may be the steal of the draft. But of course, that would be Ted Thompson’s call. There are plenty of talented offensive linemen available in this year’s draft, but Jones may be the best option for the Packers. Not only would he step into the center’s position, but he could also be used at guard, if needed.

He’s a talent the Packers should focus on and tap next month when the draft rolls around.

Well, according to sources very close to the situation, that is not the case at all – Jones is well on his way to recovery from the lisfranc foot surgery he had last month and is expected to be ready to hit the field come this spring when teams hold their rookie workouts. Though it’s still unclear at this point just how cautious the team that drafts Barrett will be, the sources who contacted lombardiave.com about our story yesterday were confident that Jones will be ready to go.

According to one source, Jones is healing at a fast rate. “Barrett really is doing great,” the source said. ” You wouldn’t even know he was hurt. I really believe the younger you are, the quicker you heal because he has progressed so quickly.”

Jones, who started at just about every line position during his career at Alabama was projected by many to be a late first round choice and many linked him to the Green Bay Packers not only his versatility, but because of the Packers need to desperately improve their offensive line. The Packers signed veteran Jeff Saturday to play center for them last season, but he was benched after 10 games and replaced with Evan Dietrich-Smith, who finished out the season.

The Packers haven’t heaped high praise on Dietrich-Smith’s late-season play, and showed their lukewarm reception of his performance by tendering him the lowest level of restricted free agent compensation. There’s no question the Packers will be looking to improve their line and should Jones continue to show the progress that he has over the past few weeks their interest in drafting him may be warming.

Before his injury in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia, Jones was thought by many to be a first round selection. However, because he was unable to play in the Senior Bowl and participate in the Combine, many felt his stock had slipped to the second round.

Packers GM Ted Thompsonhas surprised the experts time and again, so it’s always unclear as to

For months, those following the Green Bay Packers have pegged Jones as the perfect first round choice for the team. The versatility he showed at Alabama impressed a lot of the experts who projected him as a first round selection.

That was until today.

As reported on WalterFootball, Jones’s recovery from the dreaded lisfranc foot injury he suffered in the SEC Championship game against Georgia is serious enough that his immediate future is in doubt. He did turn around and play in the National Championship Game against Notre Dame, but had surgery shortly after, thus keeping him from working out at the Combine and participating in the Senior Bowl.

Though his absence from those two events probably didn’t hurt his draft standing much, today’s news that Jones would probably start the NFL season on the physically unable to perform list did. While he was being pegged as a second-rounder, the news today may sink his standing even more.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s a hell of an athlete and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Packers take him as early as the second round – even though most are now slating him as a third- and possibly even a fourth-rounder. They may take him that high because of his skill and intelligence. No doubt, whoever selects Jones is going to get a player who has a bright future, despite this setback. He has the makings of an NFL lineman who will play for a long time in the league.

He is best at center or guard and considering the Packers’ vast needs to improve their offensive line, Jones is still a possibility to be selected by the Packers.

However, this most recent development also opens other first round options for the Packers. They might go defensive line; they might go defensive back or safety; or heck, they might even go receiver running back. Running backs Eddie Lacy and Giovani Bernard come to mind.

Of course, it’s impossible to predict which direction Ted Thompson may go with that first round selection, but one thing became very clear today – it won’t be Barrett Jones.

We here at lombardiave.com have been scouring the Internet in search of mock drafts to include in our Big 3 – three different mocks with three different selections. As we move along each day, it gets more difficult to find mocksters who aren’t projecting the same selections … but we are still coming across those who are differing.

Today we focus on Eric Galko of The Sporting News, Scott1210′s Mock Draft, and Josh Norris of Rotoworld.com.

So, let’s get on with it and let these guys describe who their selections for the Packers will be …

Eric Galko of The Sporting News projection for the Packers’ first round selection at 26 is …

Corey Lemonier

Corey Lemonier, OLB, Auburn

Despite drafting Nick Perry in the first round a year ago, the Packers must add pass rushers. Lemonier is a quick-twitch, athletic prospect who could provide the speed-rush threat off the edge that would allow Clay Matthews to have continued success.

Lemonier is a long and projectable athlete who already has a nice outside rip move. He was productive as a junior but saw his play decline as a senior. While his body type is a better fit for 3-4 outside linebacker than 4-3 defensive end, his hip movement appears to be too stiff to make the transition. Lemonier also lacks powerful hands and sometime struggles to turn the corner.

The fact that Lemonier does not quit on plays, and has a good motor, combined with his athletic potential will likely cast him as a second or third rounder, despite serious questions about the translating of his play to the next level.

Lombardiave: Yes, defense will definitely be on Ted Thompson’s radar come April, and while Lemonier might be a good pick, I don’t think he foots the bill as a first-rounder. Because the Packers went first round with Nick Perry last year as the complement to Clay Matthews, I don’t see the Packers taking any outside linebacker with their first round pick.

If he falls far enough, the 6-3, 255-pound Lemonier might make a good third round pick, but not first round. Watch the tape below and you will see a player with a lot of speed who has a nose for the football. Yes, he’s got a fast motor and doesn’t seem to take any plays off. There’s no such thing as having too few pass rushers, but if the Packers are to go with a defensive selection in the first round, a defensive lineman or even a cornerback or safety would be the more valuable pick.

Here’s a video of Lemonier …

Scotty1210′s Mock Draft posting on FFtoolbox.com projects the Packers to select …

DeAndre Hopkins

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson

Lombardiave: With the loss of Greg Jennings to free agency, the potential loss of Jermichael Finley at tight end, and the Packers need for explosiveness from their receivers, selecting a wide receiver with number 26 might not be a bad choice.

Yes, we know they need offensive and defensive linemen, but if they are going to replace Jennings’ production with someone in the draft, they will need to look at a player like DeAndre Hopkins. While a Tavon Austin or a Keenan Allen would be optimum in this draft, nobody expects those two to drop below the 20-25 picks. The Packers could trade up for a receiver, but I don’t see that happening either.

Hopkins, at 6-1, 214 pounds, is a big bodied receiver who had an incredibly productive 2012 season. He caught 82 passes for 1,405 yards and 18 touchdowns. Clearly, this guy is no slouch and would fit well into the Packers’ scheme.

An interesting selection here … one that I like a lot.

Here’s a video of Hopkins …

Barrett Jones, Alabama

Jones has an extremely tough matchup in the National Championship, since he will consistently face monster NT Louis Nix face up. It will go far in showing if Jones has the quickness of the snap to get his hands onto defenders and a strong enough anchor to keep his balance and not give up the pocket. Otherwise, his future may be at guard.

Lombardiave: This is the selection that a majority of mocksters have written in ink … many feel that this is already a done deal and a slam dunk at that.

The more I look around at various options for the Packers, I’m not so sure anymore about this pick. The reason being is that if the Packers really want this guy, I think they might be able to go a different direction with their first pick (defense? wide receiver? running back?) and still be able to pick him up in the second round.

There’s no question Jones would be an incredible addition to the team. He can play all interior line positions and has also played tackle – versatility that weighs heavily with Ted Thompson. He is also an intelligent player (ala Matt Birk) who would have no trouble learning the nuances of playing center in the NFL. The awards he’s gotten over the years are testament to his abilities on and off the football field. He would also be an incredible locker room leader who could step right in and make an impact.

I like Jones for his smarts and his toughness and feel he could be the kind of player who would perform well for many years in the NFL.

This is a great first round selection, but don’t be surprised if Thompson passes him over in hopes of landing him in the second round.

Fifty-one, 51, 5-1 … while the Green Bay Packers are also focusing on the number 579 – the total number of yards the defense gave up in their NFC Divisional Playoff game against the 49ers – they are also concerned about the 51 sacks quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered in 2012.

That’s why the Packers are probably focusing first and foremost on the O-line, especially in this draft that has an incredibly deep offensive line class.

While Packers General Manager Ted Thompson spent the last draft focusing on the defensive side of the ball, many are expecting him to start his 2013 draft by selecting an offensive lineman – and many think that player will be Alabama OL Barrett Jones. But there’s one curve that’s been thrown into the Barrett Jones sweepstakes, he won’t be able to work out for anyone for at least another three months. He recently had surgery on his foot for the dreaded lis franc injury.

Feb 23, 2013; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Alec Ogletree speaks at a press conference during the 2013 NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Jones would be a valuable pick for the Packers because of his versatility. He’s played three different line positions and has played them well. He’s an intelligent player, earning a 4.0 as an undergrad and doing the same by earning his master’s degree in 2012. He understands the game and seems like a great character pick. But do the Packers make him their first round pick, like so many want and predict? With his injury, many feel his draft stock will drop and that he might slip as far as the second round or even further.

Do the Packers go an alternate route in the first round and hope Jones falls to them in the second or even the third round. It’s a big risk, but it might be worth it because of the depth in talent in this year’s NFL draft.

There are some who even think the Packers might go defense in the first round with players such as Alec Ogletree (can you say DUI?) or Manti Te’o (can you say being duped?) being mentioned as possible picks.

Other O-line players who might be coveted by the Packers are Jonathan Cooper of North Carolina, Lane Johnson of Oklahoma, and D.J. Fluker of Alabama – though he has his own injury issues.

Those two numbers keep raising their ugly heads – 51 and 579 – how the Packers deal with them remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure – with the depth of players that should be available on the board when the Packers pick in this year’s Draft, they almost can’t go wrong.

I came across this posting on Sulia by ESPN’s Jason Wilde this evening:

The @FootballPost‘s Russ Lande has the #Packers going defense at No. 26 in his latest mock draft. The pick: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia.

Here’s why Lande feels the Packers will pick Ogletree:

“After drafting Nick Perry in the first round last year, the Packers continue upgrading their defensive speed and play-making ability by selecting Ogletree. Although not as well known nationally as Manti Te’o or Kevin Minter, Ogletree is the most explosive and athletic inside linebacker available in the 2013 NFL Draft and would add a dimension to the Packers defense that they have been lacking from their inside linebackers.”

This prognostication was made, of course, before Ogletree, the Georgia star, was arrested this weekend for a DUI, but I have to question the pick anyway – not because the Packers aren’t paper thin at inside linebacker (and may be even thinner if they cut ties with A.J. Hawk), but because I can’t see Packers’ GM going defense with the first pick again this time around.

Last year, Thompson spent nearly the entire draft on defense and given that Aaron Rodgers was on his backside more than 50 times this past season and the pathetic run game went nowhere, he’s got to go offensive line. Whether they try to trade up for someone like Alabama’s Chance Warmack or sit tight and hope that players like tackle Lane Johnson out of Oklahoma or center Barrett Jones of Alabama fall to them, it’s the offensive line that needs addressing at this point in time.

We all hear that it’s the “best player on the board” that’s drafted and need is a second consideration. I feel that Thompson understands that the O-line should be his first objective. While Thompson has been known to pick up solid offensive linemen in later rounds, he’s got to go after someone like Jones who is known for his toughness and versatility – something he appreciates in these warriors.

So, even though Ogletree is considered the most explosive of the inside linebackers in the draft, the character issue raises its ugly head here. Russ Lande is wrong on this one. Thompson and the Packers will go offensive line with their first pick.

You can be the first to say I’m wrong, not only because just about everyone’s mock drafts aren’t even close, but if Thompson doesn’t go offensive line with his team’s first pick of the 2013 draft, I will be very disappointed … and I bet Aaron Rodgers will be, too.

The second post-Super Bowl edition of the FanSided 2013 NFL Mock Draft has been released.

The fine folks over at FanSided.com do a new mock draft every week right up until the actual draft in April, and we at LombardiAve.com are preparing for the full chaos of the offseason to commence. As Packer fans, we have our own opinions about what needs the Packers should try to fill using the 2013 draft. In this article we’ll explore some possibilities for the Packers first pick.

Draft positions are set save for the Super Bowl participants. Barring a trade, the Green Bay Packers will make their first selection with the 26th pick.

Jan 7, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide center Barrett Jones (75) reacts in the huddle during a timeout in game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish during the 2013 BCS Championship game at Sun Life Stadium.
According to FanSided, with the 26th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select Barrett Jones, Offensive Line, Alabama

Analysis: Jeff Saturday called it a career and the Packers will need to look for a new body to plug into the center of their offensive line. For what the Packers need, there is no better “bang for their buck” than a guy like Barrett Jones that can play any position along the offensive line, but his strength is in the interior.

Does this sound familiar to you? Well it should, because this is the second straight week Fansided has mocked Barrett Jones to the Packers at 26. We’ve said just about everything we can say about Barrett Jones prior to Combine/Pro Day season. If his leg is healthy, he’s a versatile player who can help the Packers immediately. If you want to read our previous analysis of Jones, you can find it here and here.

Sep 1, 2012; Arlington, TX, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide tackle D.J. Fluker (76) in action against the Michigan Wolverines at Cowboys Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Another option that hasn’t had as much discussion is the idea of drafting T.J. Fluker. Fluker is an enormous, mauling right tackle who would team well with Josh Sitton in the run game while providing above average pass protection. Where does that leave Bryan Bulaga? As we documented a few weeks ago, Bulaga could be on his way to left tackle, a position he played most of his college career and one that better utilizes his pass blocking ability. Drafting Fluker could potentially be like drafting both a franchise left and right tackle. This would also afford the Packers the chance to be more patient with Derek Sherrod who suffered yet another setback with his leg injury midway through the 2012 season. While Fluker was drafted just before the Packers in the Fansided mock draft, I find that selection unlikely as they already have 3 offensive tackles they’re comfortable starting.

I continue to believe targeting a wide receiver early is a necessity for the Packers with the pending loss of Greg Jennings. Two weeks ago I waxed poetic about Louisiana Tech’s Quinton Patton. Since then, his star has risen considerably, including a top 15 overall grade from Russ Lunde of the National Football Post. At this time I think it’s unlikely that Patton is taken in the first round, but he might very well be gone by the Packers’ second pick. If that’s the case, there should still be talented options like USC’s Robert Woods or either of Tennessee’s wideouts Justin Hunter and Cordarrelle Patterson.

Jan 26, 2013; Mobile, AL, USA; Senior Bowl north squad defensive back Jonathan Cyprien of Florida International (37) prior to kickoff of a game against the Senior Bowl south squad at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Safety could be another way to go. Eric Reid, with his combination of speed and tenacity, has long been a favorite of mine. A player we haven’t written much about is Florida International’s Johnathan Cyprien. Like Reid, he is speedy can deliver a bit hit. As with any small school player, there are questions surrounding Cyprien’s ability to play against elite competition. A great showing at the Senior Bowl has begun to silence the doubt, but it will remain a question until he proves it on an NFL field.

The pre-Super Bowl edition of the FanSided 2013 NFL Mock Draft has been released.

The fine folks over at FanSided.com do a new mock draft every week right up until the actual draft in April, and while we at LombardiAve.com have the end of the regular season and playoffs to worry about, it’s just about the start of draft season for most teams. We Packer fans have our own opinions about what needs the Packers should try to fill using the 2013 draft. In this article we’ll explore some possibilities for the Packers first pick.

Draft positions are set save for the Super Bowl participants. Barring a trade, the Green Bay Packers will make their first selection with the 26th pick.

Oct 27, 2012; Chapel Hill, NC, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels guard Jonathan Cooper (64) on the field in the first half at Kenan Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

According to FanSided, with the 26th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select Jonathan Cooper, Offensive Line, North Carolina

Analysis: Jeff Saturday is calling it a career, so the Packers need to find a replacement in the middle of their offensive line. Cooper is a player who would bring the ability to play both center and guard, so his versatility will be attractive to NFL front offices.

This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about Jonathan Cooper. Here’s what I wrote earlier this month about the possibility of the Packers selecting him:

From a talent standpoint, Cooper would be a tremendous value at pick 30 (the Packers projected draft slot at the time). Despite this, he doesn’t make a ton of sense for Green Bay. Cooper’s best position is left guard where they’ve just invested long-term in T.J. Lang. Cooper does have the ability to play center, but if that’s why you’re drafting him you’re just better off with Barrett Jones.

Three weeks later and not a lot has changed. Jonathan Cooper is still a very good player who probably should go before the Packers select at 26. If we pretend for a moment that the only options are Cooper and Alabama’s Barrett Jones, the question becomes where you plan to play the draft pick? Both players are extremely versatile, and while Jones is the only one that can play on the outside, chances are both will end up playing along the interior. If we compare each player at their best position – Cooper at left guard and Jones at center – Cooper is the superior prospect.

T.J. Lang Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

So should the Packers draft Cooper? He’s definitely the better value in the vacuum, but he may not be the best value to Green Bay. I say “may” because the determining factor is T.J. Lang. Lang’s performance this year has drawn some criticism. He was merely passable at right tackle after Bryan Bulaga went down and couldn’t get back to his 2011 form when he returned to left guard. A big reason for this was a serious elbow injury that no one – not even Lang – gave enough attention to during the season. Lang will be healthy come training camp, but has his 2012 season caused the team to reconsider his role? Recall that after center Scott Wells left Green Bay for St. Louis, the team openly considered moving Lang to center to replace him. Lang is a pretty sizable at guard, but he’d be near gargantuan at center. If the Packers still feel Lang can make that transition, perhaps they could maximize Jonathan Cooper’s value by keeping him at left guard.

So who else out there might interest Green Bay?

Nov 23, 2012; Fayetteville, AR, USA; LSU Tigers safety Eric Reid (1) during the game against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. LSU defeated Arkansas 20-13. Mandatory Credit: Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

As was the case the past month, LSU safety Eric Reid presents a very intriguing possibility. Green Bay is still reeling from the loss of Nick Collins, and while Morgan Burnett made strides in 2012, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that he’ll become the field-tilter Collins was. The moment Reid joins the NFL he’ll become one of the fastest players at his position. He’s also a tremendous tackler, finishing with 91 tackles this past season. While he hasn’t recorded a sack, Reid’s 4.5 tackles for loss demonstrate an ability to play the run. Finally, Reid has 6 career interceptions and 2 forced fumbles, demonstrating his ability to be a ballhawk and playmaker.

Louisiana Tech Bullldogs wide receiver Quinton Patton Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

I’ve discussed for months now that Green Bay needs to bring in some new blood at receiver. We’ve dissected players like USC’s Robert Woods, West Virginia’s Tavon Austin, and Tennessee’s Cordarrelle Patterson. All would be great contributors.

The name I’m hearing most now is Quinton Patton. Patton isn’t likely to come off the board in the first round, but he could go early on the second day. Patton has good but not great speed being clocked between 4.42 and 4.52 in the 40. Similarly, at 6-0 Patton possesses good but not great size. His college production at a mid-major has been off the charts, catching over 100 passes for just a tick under 1,400 yards his senior year alone.

Sound familiar?

It should, because that’s a remarkably similar resume to former second round pick Greg Jennings. The offense Patton played in was a bit “gimmicky,” but he proved at the senior bowl that he has the tools to be a factor at the NFL level. If the Packers don’t go receiver in the first round, Patton should be seriously considered in the second.

The divisional-round edition of the FanSided 2013 NFL Mock Draft has been released.

Draft positions will shuffle some the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, following the loss in San Francisco, the Packers are locked into a 26th pick.

Jan 1, 2013; Pasadena, CA, USA; Stanford Cardinal tight end Zach Ertz (86) catches a pass over Wisconsin Badgers defensive back Dezmen Southward (12) in the first half during the 2013 Rose Bowl game at the Rose Bowl. Mandatory Credit: Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

According to FanSided, with the 26th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select Zach Ertz, Tight End, Stanford

Analysis: Reports have indicated that the Packers are ready to move on from tight end Jermichael Finley, so they would need to find a replacement. Ertz is one of two tight ends that will grade out as first-round prospects. While Eifert may be the more dynamic passing threat, Ertz is the more well-rounded of the two prospects.

I’ve written for weeks about why the Packers won’t be investing valuable resources into the tight end position this offseason. For starters, it’s my prediction that despite rumors to the contrary, Jermichael Finley will be kept for the 2013 season. Even if Finley is out of the picture, Zach Ertz isn’t likely to end up in the Green and Gold. Ted Thompson has demonstrated time and time again that he will not reach in the draft just to pick a particular player or position. Ertz would indeed be such a reach.

Ertz’s greatest asset is his size. At 6-6 and 252, Ertz is a great red zone target as well as a decently developed blocker. However, he does not have Rob Gronkowski size, nor does he have Jimmy Graham speed. While Ertz is probably already a better blocker than Finley, it’s unlikely he’ll ever become Finley’s equal in the passing game. With Andrew Quarless coming back from the IR in 2013, the blocking Ertz could provide should already be there.

Jan 7, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide tackle Barrett Jones (75) in action against Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Manti Te

As anyone who’s read this column knows, I am a major proponent of Alabama’s Barrett Jones. Neither Evan Dietrich-Smith or Jeff Saturday were ample replacements for the departed Scott Wells, and not even Wells possessed the size and power of Jones. For those clamoring for the Packers to draft a running back, drafting a player like Jones would address the running game as much or more than a new running back, not to mention help Aaron Rodgers stay upright. Jones can also play all five positions on the offensive line, meaning that if he practices well Jones could be fit in anywhere. Fansided had Jones still on the board when the Packers pick at 26.

Nov 23, 2012; Fayetteville, AR, USA; LSU Tigers safety Eric Reid (1) during the game against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. LSU defeated Arkansas 20-13. Mandatory Credit: Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

Another possibility we haven’t discussed is safety. Charles Woodson will be 37 next year, and at $10 million is likely to be asked to take a pay cut. While I suspect he’ll accept, Woodson could refuse and force the Packers’ hand. If that happens, the Packers could consider drafting a safety if the right one falls to them. I want to emphasis that last part again, because with the early success of Jerron McMillian and M.D. Jennings there isn’t a pressing need to draft a safety high. However, Fansided has LSU’s Eric Reid still on the board when the Packers draft. Over the past two years the biggest loss the Packers have endured, whether it be to free agency or injury, was Nick Collins. Collins provided both ball-hawking ability and a linebacker’s mentality as a tackler. Only Charles Woodson has that kind of ability and he won’t play for much longer. Reid could be the long-term answer at the position.

The fine folks over at FanSided.com do a new mock draft every week right up until the actual draft in April, and while we at Lombardiave.com have the playoffs to worry about, it’s the start of draft season for most teams.
Draft positions will shuffle some the remainder of the season, so the Packers position in round 1 will probably move around a bit. Here’s hoping that it ends up being the 32nd pick in round 1!

Jan 7, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide offensive linesman Barrett Jones (75) before the 2013 BCS Championship game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Sun Life Stadium.
According to FanSided, with the 30th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select Barrett Jones, Center, Alabama

Analysis: The Packers picked up Jeff Saturday in the offseason, but it was Saturday that approached Mike McCarthy this season and painfully admitted that he just can’t hack it like he used to anymore. As a result, Green Bay has been rolling with Evan Dietrich-Smith at center and it’s been a wild ride. Green Bay’s offensive line has allowed Aaron Rodgers to be sacked more than any quarterback in the NFL and anyone could be replaced. Jonathan Cooper is an option here, but If he continues to fall, Green Bay could trade up and get him in round two.

Let me start by saying I love this selection for the Packers. I love it so much that I pined for it three weeks ago when I broke down Fansided’s week 15 mock. At that time, Jeff Saturday was still the starter, and an upgrade at the position during the offseason seemed like a necessity.

Back to the present, Evan Dietrich-Smith is now the starting center. He’s had moments where he’s obviously outperformed Saturday. However, he hasn’t yet proven he can play at that level consistently. He has up to three more games this season to prove he can hold down the position, so his grade as of the moment is incomplete.

That said, even if he earns next year’s starting center job, I still like the selection of Barrett Jones. Jones can and has played all positions on the offensive line. Not only that, but Jones has played those positions well. His massive 6-5 frame allows him to bring power to any position he lines up in. He’s dominating in pass protection, and rarely requires a second blocker to help on elite defensive linemen.

In addition to the positive effect Jones could have on the pass protection, he could also be the clincher for the Packers’ run game. It’s been awhile since Green Bay had a truly dominate run game, 2003 to be precise. That was the year Ahman Green set all the meaningful Packers’ single season running records. What gets lost in the shuffle is just how good that offensive line was in the interior. From left guard to right guard, that year’s Packers featured Mike Wahle, Mike Flanagan, and Marco Rivera. Having that kind of a run mauling interior line makes picking up 3rd and shorts a cinch, and completely changes the way defenses approach you in the redzone.

Not only could Jones pick up the torch left by Flanagan, but there is no better player comp available for Jones. It’s extraordinarily rare for any offensive lineman to have Jones’ versatility, let alone being able to play all the positions the way Flanagan did. Even if this wasn’t a Packers site, this is the comparison I’d draw.

Because it’s customary, there are alternatives the Packers should at least consider. Fansided suggests Jonathan Cooper. From a talent standpoint, Cooper would be a tremendous value at pick 30. Despite this, he doesn’t make a ton of sense for Green Bay. Cooper’s best position is left guard where they’ve just invested long term in T.J. Lang. Cooper does have the ability to play center, but if that’s why you’re drafting him you’re just better off with Barrett Jones.

Sticking with the offensive line, the Packers could also take a look at the tackle position. The projected starter at right tackle, Bryan Bulaga, is expected to make a full recovery, but hip injuries are always tricky and nothing’s for certain. On the other side, Marshall Newhouse has steadily improved in his second year starting, but he continues to struggle with elite pass rushers and often requires a tight end or running back to chip. The best remaining tackle on the board in this mock draft was Texas A&M’s Jake Matthews. As you might know, Matthews is the son of Hall of Fame tackle Bruce Matthews, which would also make Clay Matthews III his cousin. Bloodlines aside, Jake Matthews is a ferocious blocker who could anchor either side of an offensive line.

As I’ve suggested previously, the Packers could also look at wide receivers. Greg Jennings and Donald Driver are unlikely to return to Green Bay in 2013, and James Jones is a free agent after next season. Packers GM Ted Thompson has a track record of drafting wide receivers a year or two ahead of when they’ll be needed. There are many fantastic options that may still be available at this point, USC’s Robert Woods being chief among them. He has good but not great speed to go along with his similarly good but not great height. What he does have are fantastic hands and is far ahead of most draft prospects in terms of route running. He should be able to contribute early, and can take on a big role as early as 2014.
