Yesterday, July 26, everyone was pretty giddy with the start of NFL training camps across the league.

The focus here, of course, was Green Bay. But it didn’t matter whether you were – Chicago, New Orleans, New York or San Francisco – the talk was all the same.

“Guys are flying’ around;” “Great to be back;” “Ready to get going;” “Super Bowl.”

Everyone is going to the Super Bowl, if you believe what players and coaches were spouting yesterday. Well, of course it’s great to hear that all are optimistic about going to and winning a Super Bowl. That’s the way it should be on the first day of training camp.

But now that the first day is gone, let’s get real. Let’s stop the talk and let’s just get down to brass tacks. Jacksonville is not going to the Super Bowl. Tennessee is not going to the Super Bowl. Cleveland is not going to the Super Bowl. St. Louis is not going to the Super Bowl.

To get to the Super Bowl may never happen for some teams in the NFL, such as Cleveland and Jacksonville, but I guess it’s OK to have goals and the set the bar high.

But let’s move on now. Let’s start talking about the nuts and bolts – the competitions within each camp where players are fighting for that 53-man final roster spot. Yes, let’s get real.

While the Chicago Bears have as good a shot at reaching the Super Bowl as just about anyone in the League, at least Brandon Marshall hit the nail on the head in his interview yesterday when asked about the words “Super Bowl.” Almost in awe, he said, “It’s real.”

Will Marshall, Cutler and company make it real? Well, they have to get by the Packers, Lions and Vikings to do it. Is that “real?” I can’t say yet.

All I can say at this point is that it truly is time to get real.

Matt Forte just this afternoon went from a dissatisfied running back to a player who now fits nicely into the Chicago Bears‘ long-term plans.

It was announced around the noon hour today, Monday, July 16, that Forte and the Bears agreed on a four-year, $32 million contract.

According to BearGogglesOn.com, fansided.com’s Chicago Bears blog site, Adam Schefter first reported the details this morning, ending all speculation that Forte would hold out.

Here’s what Tooch over at Bear Goggles had to say on the signing:

Forte was originally due to make $7.74 million this season after the Bears placed the franchise tag on him. Despite an injury-shortened 2011 season, Forte still racked up 997 yards on the ground in 12 games. The multi-purpose running back should be pushed even harder this year with the team’s acquisition of Michael Bush in the offseason and the added offensive threat of Brandon Marshall.

Many have questioned for months whether or not the Bears should sign Forte to a long-term deal given his position and recent injury as well. The potential threat of a training camp holdout may have contributed to the team’s decision.

Chicago Bears – Fantasy Football 2012 Preview

The MLB All-Star break is always a good time to start your fantasy football preparations. We’ll have plenty of coverage here at FantasyCPR leading up to preseason and the highly-anticipated kickoff to the regular season.

Today we’re joined by Boomer from Bear Goggles On who helps us preview what we can expect from “da Bears” as they head into a tough season in the ultra-competetive NFC North.

Zach Thompson, FantasyCPR: Thanks again, Mike, for helping us with our season previews. We’ll start with the obvious one… The Bears looked good last year and appeared to be on their way to the playoffs before injuries completely derailed their season. Should we expect any lingering effects of either Matt Forte or Jay Cutler’s injury? And will the Bears O-line be able to keep Cutler upright

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: I don’t expect any lingering effects from the injuries to Forte and Cutler. By all accounts, Jay has been zipping the ball around during OTA’s, showing no signs of damage from the broken thumb that ended his 2011 campaign. Even though Forte has not been in camp with his contract status up in the air, he is always in top shape and I expect this season to be no different.

The offensive line question is another story. The Bears didn’t make any significant moves this offseason, either in free agency or through the draft, to address one of their most glaring weaknesses. This one still scares me a bit.

Z: Will Jay Cutler be a top 10 QB statistically this year?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: There’s no reason to believe Cutler can’t get to that upper echelon of quarterbacks now that the Bears finally put some weapons around him and scrapped Mike Martz’s offensive playbook filled with 7-step drops that the Bears offensive line couldn’t block.

Z: I’ve been surprised at the lack of love given to the newly-acquired Brandon Marshall. Do you think he’ll be a top-10 receiver this year?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: No question. Marshall and Cutler were an elite duo in Denver and I expect them to pick up where they left off. The Bears added Jeremy Bates and quarterbacks coach and de facto passing coordinator, so hopes are high for Marshall in the Bears offense. He’ll get a ton of targets and should catch 90+ balls if things go according to plan.

Z: Would you rather have Brandon Marshall on your fantasy team or Hakeem Nicks?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: I’d take Marshall since I think he’s a better receiver and since there are fewer weapons around Marshall compared to Nicks, who has to compete with Victor Cruz for touches.

Z: Brandon Marshall or Jordy Nelson?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: Marshall. Nelson is 2nd or 3rd option in Green Bay.

Z: Brandon Marshall or Steve Smith

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: Marshall. I think the Panthers and Cam Newton come back down to earth this season.

Z: Just one more, Brandon Marshall or A.J. Green.

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: Marshall since he’s got a stronger track record than Green, who might suffer a sophomore slump in 2012.

Z: I agree with you on all of those. I might consider Smith over him, but I want to see what the Panthers are doing during camp, but other than that I’m liking Marshall over all those guys. Who do you think will be the #2 wide receiver in Chicago?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: That’s a great question. Everyone in Bears camp has been pumping up Devin Hester now that he’ll be moved into the slot. I think that Earl Bennett will emerge as the #2 in terms of targets. Look for Alshon Jeffery to be a red zone threat as the season progresses.

Z: Will the Bears use the TE much as a receiver and if so who do you think will emerge as Cutler’s favorite target in that role?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: Kellen Davis has been getting some preseason hype as a super sleeper TE for the Bears. He’s 6’7”, so he should be able to get some red zone TD’s.

Z: Matt Forte seemed to wear down a little at the end of the year even before the injury. Who will serve as the Bears backup RB and will they use him in any kind of a rotation?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: I expect Forte and Bush to be sort of a lightening and thunder attack. For all his success that Forte has had, he hasn’t been good in short yardage and red zone. That’s where Bush will excel.

Z: The Bears D/ST is always one of the top units in all of fantasy football. Do you think they’ll take a step forward or backward this year?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: Their defense is definitely on the decline with their top stars on the wrong side of 30, but with a Lovie Smith defense, it’s always about takeaways. The Bears will continue to be opportunistic and should still be a top fantasy producer. When you add Devin Hester and special teams to the mix, I think they’ll still be a top fantasy option.

Z: Last one, give me your realistic expectation for the Bears this season, and then your perfect scenario. How far can Lovie Smith and Da Bears go?

Mike Burzawa, Bear Goggles On: Realistically, I have the Bears at 10 or 11 wins this season and making a strong run in the playoffs. In a perfect scenario, Cutler stays healthy and he and Marshall live up to the hype while the defense gets another year out of Urlacher, Briggs, Peppers and Tillman and the Bears return to Super Bowl glory.

Given that it’s National Mental Health Awareness Month, this op-ed written by none other than Chicago Bears’ wide receiver Brandon Marshall not only sheds a whole new light on the man, but also provides insight into deep issues that go way beyond concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

It’s a social issue, wrapped in a sports phenomena, and embedded in an individual’s humanity.

Marshall’s piece has not only given me new respect for this man, I am grateful for his insight into what is happening out there in the real world.

As a society, we have to look more deeply into the issues that result in tragedies like that of Junior Seau. His death is only the tip of an iceberg, but we’ve got to have the will and the understanding to make it a wakeup call to bear down, to allocate resources and to bring this issue to the social forefront.

It’s not about just one man, nor is it about a game. It’s about gaining an understanding into the human brain and what we can do to keep these situations from occurring.

But we’re just starting. In fact, the contest hasn’t even begun, nor has the National Anthem been sung. We’re warming up and there’s four quarters ahead of us.

Do we have the will to win?

Though there are many who will continue to suffer because they don’t have the time to wait, we have to persevere and work to overcome this social injustice and lack of understanding.

In the meantime, it’s pieces like Marshall’s that will help us get there. Take a read here or below. You, too, should have a better understanding when you reach the end.

Let’s use Junior Seau tragedy as opportunity to learn

Junior Seau. Kirby Lee/Image of Sport-US PRESSWIRE

‘Wow! Wait? What? Junior Seau was shot? How? Why? They’re saying suicide?’’

Question after question went through my head after I heard the tragic news Wednesday.

Immediately, my heart began to hurt. What I felt was a deep pain, a deep compassion for this situation beyond Junior, his kids, his family, his teammates and his friends.

There are many people out there who are suffering and have nowhere to turn for help or are afraid because of the stigmas placed on mental health.

As I began to meditate more on Junior’s death, I began to think about this vicious cycle our world is in. The word ‘‘validate’’ started to run through my mind.

The cycle starts when we are young boys and girls. Let me illustrate it for you:

Li’l Johnny is outside playing and falls. His dad tells him to get up and be strong, to stop crying because men don’t cry.

So even from the age of 2,
our belief system begins to form this picture. We are teaching our boys not to show weakness or share any feelings or emotions, other than to be strong and tough.

Is that ‘‘validating’’?

What do we do when Li’l Susie falls? We say: ‘‘It’s OK. I’m here. Let me pick you up.’’

That’s very validating, and it’s teaching our girls that expressing emotions is OK.

We wonder why it’s so hard to bridge the communication gap between men and women.

This presented itself clearly when I was going through group therapy and was the only man in my groups. Better yet, I was there for three months, and there was only one other guy in the program.

In therapy, I learned how to express my emotions and talk about my problems, then apply it to my real life. I had to work through my entire belief system, train myself how to think, not what to think, and let go of the things that had me in bondage.

I had to bridge the gap. It wasn’t going to do it on its own. It’s a cycle.

Can you imagine how this presents itself even more so in football players?

Junior Seau, Kenny McKinley, Dave Duerson, Brandon Marshall, etc. I am the only one in that group who is living because I got help before it was too late.

In sports, those who show they are hurt or have mental weakness or pain are told: ‘‘You’re not tough. You’re not a man. That’s not how the players before you did it.’’

Someone like Junior Seau.

So your perception of a man or player gets distorted.

Focusing more on this issue, we see more and more professionals doing research on the brain and head trauma in retired athletes. I respect their science and their research on CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and how they think it might be associated with depression and dementia, but we can’t recognize CTE until the autopsy.

We can, however, start today by treating the living. Treatments that helped me — but that I think we all can benefit from — are dialectical behavior therapy and metallization therapy.

Looking at the situation with Seau and other cases with retired athletes, I think our focus should be more on why the transition seems to be so hard after football.

As athletes, we go through life getting praised and worshipped and making a lot of money. Our worlds and everything in them — spouses, kids, family, religion and friends — revolve around us. We create a world where our sport is our life and makes us who we are.

When the game is taken away from us or when we stop playing, the shock of not hearing the praise or receiving the big bucks often turns out to be devastating. The blueprint I am creating for myself will help not only other athletes, it will help suffering people all over.

We must break the cycle, and that starts with prayer and by seeking help. By understanding the pain,
we can replace the hurt
with love.

Brandon Marshall is a wide receiver for the Bears.

Brandon Marshall likes to talk big … some might say his actions on the football field should allow him to do so.

But in the end for the Chicago Bears, who just this past week gave away two third round picks for the former Miami Dolphins receiver, may require their new player to eat his words … maybe even without his participation in a single play for his new team.

That’s all dependent on how the league handles discipline for his alleged involvement in striking a woman this past weekend. We all know that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been consistent in carrying a big stick when it comes to meting out penalties, especially for repeat offenders. Marshall has had several brushes with the law during his career and has been suspended once already – back in 2008 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Marshall, when he was playing for the Denver Broncos, was also involved in the incident that resulted in the shooting death of teammate Darrent Williams – but that significant occurrence is just the tip of Marshall’s brushes with the law. If there’s a loose cannon in the NFL, Marshall is it. He’s become the poster boy for “trouble.” And the Bears seem to have bought into it.

“In due time, the truth will be out, and we’re excited about that,” Marshall is quoted as saying at his introductory press conference today in Chicago. “Given my history, I definitely understand the concern and the questions.”

“Once it has taken its course, I think you will see things totally different, and we’re excited about the process,” Marshall said. “I understand and I get the perception out there. Those are the seeds that I’ve planted early on in my career up until last year.”

He also said that despite the allegations that he punched a woman at a nightclub over the weekend, he believes that when the facts come out he will not be facing any legal problems, or any NFL discipline.

Sure. Where have we heard that before? From just about any and every person who’s ever been accused of a wrongdoing.

This is not an isolated incident. Marshall’s checkered past follows him like stink on a skunk and if he thinks the commissioner is going to take pity on him, he’s in for a rude awakening … and probably a fine at a minimum or possible suspension.

I don’t write this because I’m a Packers fan and he’s been signed by the Bears. I write this because he’s a player that has given the NFL a black eye, much like he allegedly did to the woman last weekend. He’s poison and if the Bears think he’s the answer to their problems at wide receiver, then the organization has issues.

Take a look at Marshall’s Wikipedia page. There is an entire section entitled “Legal,” which details his run-ins with the law. Whether or not he is guilty or not guilty of any of these incidents isn’t the issue – the incident illustrates his character. Does anyone have any reason to believe the Dolphins didn’t unload him because he is a head case? If the Bears think he will be a positive influence in their locker room, maybe they should bring back Sam Hurd to help him out.

Below is the information pulled from his Wiki page.

Legal

According to Orlando-Orange County public records (case 48-2004-MM-012392-O), on Halloween 2004, while a student at UCF, Marshall was arrested in Orlando on charges of assault on a law enforcement officer, refusal to obey, disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.[57]

On January 1, 2007, Marshall was present at “The Shelter,” a nightclub in Denver, Colorado, along with teammates Javon Walker and Darrent Williams. The trio was attending a birthday party held for and by Denver Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin. As the players were leaving the club in a limousine, Williams was fatally shot in the neck after an unknown assailant opened fire on the vehicle. Willie Clark was later charged with the murder.[58] Walker has stated in interviews that the shooter was likely a nightclub patron whose motive was retaliation after being involved in an altercation with Marshall’s cousin earlier that night.[59][60]

On March 26, 2007, Marshall was arrested in the Highlands Ranch suburb of Denver on suspicion of domestic violence after his girlfriend reported that following a domestic dispute, Marshall prevented a taxi she was in from leaving his house.[61] Charges from the incident were later dismissed on May 25, 2007, after Marshall completed anger management counseling.[62]

In the early morning of October 22, 2007, Marshall was arrested in the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area at the intersection of 14th and Blake St. for driving under the influence of alcohol.[63] A trial was scheduled for September 16, but Marshall instead agreed to a plea bargain four days earlier; he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while ability impaired.[64] He was sentenced to one-year probation and 24 hours of community service.

On June 12, 2008, Marshall was ticketed for an illegal lane change, then found to be without his license and proof of insurance.[65] The case was eventually dropped as part of a plea bargain for the October 22, 2007 driving incident involving alcohol.[64]

According to an article published in the Rocky Mountain News on July 28, 2008, Douglas County deputies fielded “about 11″ calls to Marshall’s home since January 2006. The article stated that one call resulted in Marshall being arrested (the March 26, 2007 domestic dispute), and some did not involve him at all.[66]

A September 17, 2008 article on CompleteColorado.com stated that the solicitor’s office in Fulton County, Georgia filed misdemeanor battery charges on September 10 for an alleged incident on March 4, 2008, in Atlanta, Georgia. Marshall was booked on March 6, then released the next day after posting a $1,000 cash bond.[67] The case was assigned to Judge John Mather in Georgia state court.[68] On August 14, 2009, a jury in Atlanta found Marshall not guilty.[69]

On March 1, 2009, Marshall was arrested in Atlanta for disorderly conduct after allegedly being involved in a fight with his fiancee, Michi Nogami-Campbell. Marshall was released on a $300 bond.[70] The charges were dropped the following day.[71]

On April 23, 2011, Marshall was stabbed near his stomach by his wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall. He was taken to a hospital and was released two days later. He is expected to make a full recovery.[72][73]

It was later revealed by police that Marshall’s wife did make a brief 911 call, but it only described an unspecified emergency and no mention of a stabbing ever took place. She is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and is free on $7,500 bail.

In a South Florida Sun-Sentinel article published on July 30, 2011, it was revealed that Marshall was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder at Boston’s McLean Hospital after his incident with Nogami-Campbell.[74] He is currently pursuing treatment for his mental illness and filming a documentary about his struggle.

On early Sunday, March 11, 2012, two days before his trade to the Bears, Marshall was accused of hitting a woman in the face at a New York club and being involved in a melee. The New York Post stated that Marshall, his wife and some friends were at Marquee when a brawl ensued, and Marshall punched the woman below her left eye, although he may have been attempting to hit the woman’s friends.[75]

Ok, Packers fans, here’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for during this week of free agency frenzy.

No, it’s not Mario Williams having a change of heart and signing with the Packers for the “Ted Thompson bargain rate.”

It’s not the Bears finally saying they screwed up by signing Brandon Marshall.

It’s not Ted Thompson coming out of his Afghanistan cave …

It’s Donald Driver during a practice session of Dancing with the Stars!

Ok, so maybe you would have rather had Mario Williams visiting 1265 Lombardi Ave. Wouldn’t we all?

But this could be the next best thing given the dearth of news coming out of Green Bay these days.

To see driver, go to the 3:45 mark of this video.

Enjoy.

Was his trade to the Windy City the biggest move of day 1 of Free Agency.Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

No doubt it was a busy day around the National Football League with the start of Free Agency.

Have you kept abreast of every move that was made throughout the day?

Me either.

While there were several moves that raised an eyebrow or two, there were also several moves that didn’t grab much attention.

This is for sure – free agency continues to be the vehicle by which the “bad” teams in the league try to improve their lot by overpaying veterans who may have a name, but won’t necessarily push that team over the top toward a Super Bowl.

Consider the teams that grabbed the most headlines on the first day: Washington, Buffalo, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Chicago – yes, I lump the Bears into that group … if for no other reason than the fact that they are simply Da Bears.

Anyway, the first day offered some trades (Brandon Marshall to the Bears) signings (Vincent Jackson to the Bucs) and out-of-the-ordinary announcements (Randy Moss to the 49ers – even though he signed on the eve of free agency).

So, we want to know how you feel about some of the moves made Tuesday. Take the poll as we look forward to future action, such as watching Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn, as well as whether Super Mario Williams will really sign with the Bills.

Andrew Mills/THE STAR-LEDGER via US PRESSWIRE

It has been nine seasons since the Chicago Bears have had a 1,000 yard receiver. Could it be that they have not had any good receivers or maybe they just have not had any quarterbacks? Probably both, but that’s not the point. The point is, they are getting a receiver in his prime who has posted a 1,000 yard season in each of his last five seasons. Not only that, but Marshall and quarterback Jay Cutler were teammates for many of those years in Denver.

In return for the trade, Miami receives the Bears’ third round draft pick this year and next. That’s it. Pretty good bargain for the Bears if I do say so myself. It has been rumored that Miami made this move in order to try and sway Peyton Manning toward them. You would think Manning would actually prefer to work with Marshall but actually this may not be the case. Manning has been rumored to be a little turned away from Miami due to Marshall and his childish attitude he seems to always have.

This move cannot be looked at by any Packers fan as being a good thing at all. Though the Bears have brought in receivers in hoping of dramatic improvements, it always seemed to end up in failure. It seems as if their offense is just not designed to incorporate the wide receivers to become a major threat in any game.

Anyway, do you think this move makes the Chicago Bears’ offense better than last year? Even better then the Pack?

Whoa, sorry … getting a little carried away right there. Take the poll and see how others think.

On a recent radio show, Packers receiver Donald Driver was asked a question about the receivers for the Chicago Bears, and he stated the obvious:

“They don’t have a receiver,” Driver said on the “Waddle & Silvy” show on ESPN 1000. “They don’t have any true receivers that step up and play and take their team to where they want to go.

“I love Devin [Hester], and Devin knows that, but Devin plays [defensive back]. I don’t think he’s just a solid receiver right now. He may become one as years go on, but it doesn’t happen overnight.”

I’m not sure there’s anyone that can deny this, even Bears fans. Let’s look at the wide receivers on the Bears roster currently: Hester, Brandon Rideau, Eric Peterman, Johnny Knox, Derek Kinder, Juaquin Iglesias, Rashied Davis, John Broussard, Earl Bennett, and Devin Aromashodu. Peterman, Knox, Kinder, and Iglesias are all rookies. I’ve never heard of Rideau. Bennett and Aromashodu have yet to show anything on the NFL level. Davis has had flashes of brilliance, but his career season was 2008, when he had 35 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns. Hester had 52 receptions for 665 yards and three touchdowns.

Granted, with Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman as your quarterbacks, it’s hard to produce. With Jay Cutler in town, the wide receivers will see some improvement, but you have to have some toys for your quarterback to play with. Cutler is a great quarterback, but I doubt he will be able to turn these guys into Pro Bowlers within one or two seasons. The Bears weakest point on their offense is their receiving corps. Hester has his moments, but it feels like most of the time he is used as a diversion or as a gimmick.

If Chicago wants to contend, they need a Brandon Marshall or an Anquan Boldin, a big target that can make any quarterback look good. However, with the king’s ransom they payed for Cutler, it doesn’t look like they have anything to give up for them. The Cutler acquisition of Cutler gives Chicago the franchise quarterback it needs, but he doesn’t have any receivers, meaning a tough time getting adjusted for Jay.

Donald Driver states the obvious folks. Seriously, before you read this, could you name a Bears wide receiver besides Hester?

The other thing that I found interesting about this is that Driver is usually pretty silent when it comes to the media. He doesn’t toot his own horn that much or make too much noise on the airwaves. That being said, I like it. It gives the Packers a bit of an edge for 2009. Driver also answered questions about future Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre:

“A lot of guys just kind of put it out of their mind, and said that whatever Brett does he’s going to do it on his own, and we can’t worry about it in Green Bay,” Driver said. “If he signs with Minnesota, he does, and if he doesn’t he doesn’t.

“If he signs with them, then we prepare for him when that week comes around, but right now we’re not focused on that. We’re just focused on winning games trying to get to where we want to go, and that’s the world championship.”

Good words from Driver. Less than two weeks until Favre’s decision. My guess? He’ll be back.
