April 21, 1991 - Green Bay stays close to home when it drafts Don Davey in the third round of the draft. Davey, a defensive end, toiled for Manitowoc High School before playing four years with the Wisconsin Badgers. “I hung up the phone and jumped in the air,” Davey says of receiving the call from the Packers. Davey, a four-year academic All-American, was not expected to be taken so high. “We didn’t draft him to get him on game shows and win a lot of money,” Packers coach Lindy Infante says of Davey’s intelligence. “We drafted him because he can come in and play football for us.”

Free-Agent Defensive Tackle Russell Maryland  Inks Three-Year Deal With Packers April 20, 2000 - The Packers come to terms with free agent defensive tackle Russell Maryland. The 300-pounder agrees to a three-year, $8.3 million contract that includes a $1.65 million signing bonus. “They (the Packers) really recruited Russell hard,” Leigh Steinberg, his agent, says. “They did a terrific job in taking what was an abstraction and turning it into a reality. Russell was thrilled.” Green Bay turned to Maryland after the club fell short in its pursuit of free-agent defensive tackle Sam Adams who signed with the Ravens.
