His persona, his unique talents, his ability to rise from out of nowhere to help bring a franchise back from the bowels of NFL Hell, all brought him to a new level in the eyes of all Packers fans.

In this short video, Majkowski talks briefly about his time in Green Bay and how the fans of Titletown are so special to him.

Warning: It looks like this video was shot at a breakfast gathering and Don actually looks a bit peaked … like the night before was a time when he had a heck of a time.

Anyway, thought you might appreciate this.

It had been five years since the Green Bay Packers had won a game against the Chicago Bears.

Good God, that was 10 straight losses to the Monsters of the Midway during the 1980s. Unacceptable for Packers fans.

That’s why when Nov. 5, 1989, rolled around, Packers Nation could rejoice once again with a game that was a precursor to the string of Bears killings the Packers would lay on Chicago through the 1990s and early 2000s under the guidance of Brett Favre.

But on that day in 1989 when Don “Majik” Majkowski was the Packers quarterback, a tight game came down to a fourth down play from the Bears’ 14 yard line with 41 seconds remaining in a game that had the Bears leading 13-7 at that point.

We all know what transpired – especially those Bears fans who place an asterisk in front of the final score.

Majkowski scrambled right and ran toward the line of scrimmage on the right sideline. Just before stepping out of bounds and being crushed by Bears defenders, he threw a dart into the end zone and into the arms of Sterling Sharpe for the apparent touchdown.

However, as we know, Majik was flagged for throwing the ball from beyond the line of scrimmage. Though there are those who would argue that was indeed the case, the referee in the booth reviewing the play didn’t see it that way. The touchdown stood and the Packers got out of the stadium with a 14-13 win that will never be forgotten by Chicago fans.

But for Packers fans, it’s also a game that will never be forgotten. It will live forever in both teams’ lore … it’s just always fun to look back on it.

We all remember Don The Majik Man Majkowski. He provided so many chills and thrills during the 1989 season when he and Lindy Infante brought the Packers back from the doldrums of the 1970-80s.

However, it was short-lived when he landed out of bounds after a hit by Arizona defender Freddie Joe Nunn. At first it was thought the injury in 1991 was minor, but it turned out to be a rotator cuff. After surgery, Majkowski came back in 1992 to be named the starter by first-year head coach Mike Holmgren. That lasted until he mangled his ankle against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Enter Brett Favre … the rest is history.

Read about the deal Majkowski signed with the Packers just prior to the wheels coming off for Majik Man.

Packers Hoping for the Old Majik in One-Year Deal

July 15, 1991 – Coming off rotator cuff surgery, quarterback Don Majkowski signs a one-year, $1.7 million deal with an eye on regaining his form and perhaps his leverage in hammering out a more lucrative, long-term deal. “I wanted a one-year deal from the start,” Majkowski says. “I just don’t think we were in a good position to sign a long-term deal.” In 1989, Majkowski attempted all but one of Green Bay’s passes in throwing for 27 touchdowns and 4,318 yards. In 1990, those numbers dropped to 10 TDs and 1,925 yards as the quarterback missed seven games. “I’m going to try to have a great year. Then maybe I’ll look for a long-term deal,” Majkowski adds.

One of my all-time favorite players was Lynn Dickey, the rifle-armed quarterback who connected so many times with Hall of Famer James Lofton, tight end Paul Coffman and and plethora of running backs.

When the Packers announced on this date back in 1986 that they would be releasing all rights to the quarterback it not only shocked me, but set the Packers back several years. Randy Wright took over for the veteran QB and we all know how that all turned out. It wasn’t until the Majik Man, Don Majkowski, took over under center that that the Packers finally started to find the win column again.

Courtesy of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame is this piece about Dickey’s release … enjoy.

Packers Give Up Rights to Lynn Dickey

June 11, 2012 | Eric Goska |

June 11, 1986 – The Green Bay Packers announce they have notified the NFL that they are relinquishing all rights to veteran quarterback Lynn Dickey. The decision to cut ties with Dickey comes down to money, and it occurs a little more than 10 years after he was obtained in a trade (with the Houston Oilers) to bring stability to the quarterback position. “We just had to make a decision, based on what his worth to us is,” Packers coach Forrest Gregg says. “I don’t think 110 percent of his salary is a fair figure.” Dickey, 36, notified the team that he would re-sign for that amount ($935,000), but the price tag was well above the $215,000 the Packers reportedly offered him in February to retain his rights.

Nick Hill in action with the Orlando Predators

If you’ve been a fan of the Green Bay Packers for the past 20 years, you know there has not been a shortage of quarterbacks who have come through Titletown – quarterbacks who haven’t been named Brett or Aaron.

You can go back to the days when Favre was in his first season with the Packers and trace a line right up until today’s Packer unit. There have always been quality quarterbacks in the Packers organization. They haven’t always play. No, in fact, most of them have sat. You can start with Favre himself who initially sat behind Don Majkowski. You can add to the list Kurt Warner, Ty Detmer, Mark Brunell, TJ Rubley, Jim McMahon, Doug Pederson, Steve Bono, Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Brooks, Aaron Rodgers and Craig Nall.

All of them weren’t all-pros, but they were decent players in their own rights.

Now that it looks like the Packers organization is going to lose another quality backup in Matt Flynn, the team is left with just two on the roster – Rodgers and Graham Harrell.
