News out of Chicago this afternoon has shed light on discussions between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Chicago city officials, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel, about the possibility of the Windy City landing a Super Bowl bid.

Published reports out of Chicago have quoted Goodell saying, “We did speak about this earlier. We are, as you know, hosting a Super Bowl in New York in an open-air stadium in 2014. And we’re excited about that! We think it’s gonna be a great thing for our fans and a great thing for New York. And I think if we can do it successfully there, I think that opens up doors that we’ll all be looking at.”

Goodell was in Chicago to present a plaque commemorating Soldier Field becoming the first NFL stadium to receive LEED status, given to the most environmentally friendly buildings in the country.

Not only does the 2014 open air venue in New York City open the possibility for a Super Bowl in Chicago, but it should also open the possibility for other cold venues being considered for a bid. Should the league be considering Denver? Philadelphia? And how about Green Bay?

Phoenix has been awarded the Super Bowl in 2015. The NFL hasn’t chosn a host city yet for 2016

While many logistics would need to be worked out – things like parking, accommodations and places to host the variety of parties that are held during the Super Bowl week – in my estimation, holding a Super Bowl in Green Bay is certainly not out of the question. And it should be part of the conversation.

While temperatures in Green Bay the first week of February can vary tremendously, it’s also possible that the variation in conditions in Green Bay aren’t that far off from those in Florida. According to the Weather Channel, Green Bay’s average daytime temperature in February is 28 degrees. The average in Florida, in comparison, is 53.

Is it crazy to think the Super Bowl could be held in Green Bay? I guess we should see how the date in New York goes. Should it go well, I could certainly see the big game being held at Soldier Field. And considering that the Packers are adding another 8,000 seats to Lambeau Field, seating shouldn’t be that huge of a factor as the total at Lambeau will be approaching 80,000.

Though it’s not likely the City of Green Bay will be a Super Bowl destination, at least the talk about Chicago gives us renewed hope. We can never say never and only hope that there is some way, somehow that the greatest franchise in the league could have its super day in the sun.

April 8, 1962 - ”We truly understand this great challenge to repeat as champions. If this team is willing to sacrifice as much as it did last year, we will be ready to accept that challenge.” Though training camp is months away, Vince Lombardi appears ready for his team to begin defense of its 1961 NFL title as evidenced by his speech to more than 200 at the Eagles Club in Milwaukee. Lombardi also states he believes the team has had a fine draft and that first-round pick, Earl Gros, will be “the fastest back I’ve had in Green Bay.”

During this week of hyperbole, exaggeration, breast- and brow-beating, I thought I would provide a chance to take a bit of a different look at what’s happening out there and maybe what some of the other more “sane” writers and individuals are saying about the Packers vs. Giants matchup Sunday.

I start with “The Fifth Down,” one of my favorite pieces offered by The New York Times. While it talks about things that are the NFL, most of the time it’s a unique look. What you see below is a case in point.

The headline pretty much says it all, but it’s contents will not only warm your heart on this chilly January day, but it will make you feel downright good to be a Packers fan and, if you are from Green Bay or Wisconsin, it will make you really happy. That’s certainly something we need at this point in time given the emotional roller coaster ride we’ve been on this week with the announcement of the death of Joe Philbin’s son.

So, take a look at the piece below … there will be more on the way today, tomorrow and leading right up to the start of Sunday’s game.

We can only say Touché, Mr. Couch. We couldn’t have said it any better.

And so, without further ado, I present to you the column so brilliantly crafted by Mr. Couch.

If you’re a Packers or Brewers fan, relish in the moment; if you’re a Bears or Cubs fan … well, too bad.

I have a dream.

A dream that the Minnesota Vikings team comes to Lambeau Field and is dominated by the Green Bay Packers.

I have a dream that the Minnesota QB Brett Favre is greeted with boo’s for his final showdown at the not-yet-frozen tundra. My dream includes several interceptions that includes a “pick six”.

I have a dream that Aaron Rodgers has a great night. A night with few errors, great accuracy, excellent decision making and no sacks.

I have a dream of few penalties and good officiating. I have a dream that the Packers are able to help the Vikings continue their road game losing streak.

I believe in the Green Bay Packers. I believe in the players, I believe in the fans.

I have a dream that the Packers will once again lead the NFC North.

The game was, as always a nail-biter. My stress level was high, my blood pressure, even higher.

It was probably one of the best football games I’ve seen all year. But the best part, MY DREAM CAME TRUE!

The Packers beat Brett Favre and the Vikings in Lambeau. This was a critical game, the Packers NEEDED this win. Not just for their record, not just for the division, but also to get that monkey off of Rodgers’ back!

Rodgers ended the night with 21-34, 295 yds, 2 TDs, 2 INTs while Favre had 212 yds, 1 TD and 3 INT’s. (more…)
