Packers: ‘Back to the Big Dance’

The fence directly across Lombardi Avenue in Green Bay is each year dedicated and painted in a special theme for the Green Bay Packers.

This year’s theme, which was selected from those submitted as part of a contest mixes Packers longtime receiver Donald Driver, his participation on “Dancing with the Stars,” and the Packers hope of getting to the Super Bowl.

This year’s theme: ”Donald and the Pack: Back to the Big Dance.”

Cute. Catchy. Very true to everyone’s mindset right now.

It’s certainly a slogan that has legs – In fact, we’re hoping its relevancy is just as important in January and February as it is today.

Dancing Driver Inspires Packers Fence Slogan

Green Bay -The famous fence across from Lambeau Field has a new look for the new season.The fence now reads, “Donald and the Pack: Back to the Big Dance.”The annual fence painting has become a symbol of the community.”People love to get involved with this and it makes a lot of sense,” said Bruce Kiel, creator of the fence slogan. “Nothing fancy, it’s a good time, just back the Pack.”Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy agrees that the event is a unique way for fans to support their Green and Gold.”It’s a great tradition, to me it kind of signifies and personifies, the unique nature of the Packers organization, and relationship we have with our neighbors and with the community and we’re very supportive of it,” said Murphy.

The slogan was inspired by Donald Driver’s win on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” this past spring.

Packers big announcement today – Cabela’s coming to town

Eyeing an area at the intersection of Hwy. 41 and Lombardi Avenue, the Green Bay Packers announced at a 10 a.m. press conference this morning a retail entertainment center that will feature a Cabela’s retail outlet that will sit on the western end of property owned by the the team and near a controversial wetland that brought the Department of Natural Resources down on a previous plan by Bass Pro Shops last year – a controversy that resulted in the retailer backing out of the project.

But it seems the Packers and Cabela’s are ready to jump into the fray, despite the project’s infringement on the controversial wetland.

Because about 12 acres of the area involves a wetland, Gov. Walker and the Legislature approved a measure in 2011 that would allow for development of that particular site, but Bass Pro Shops backed down because they didn’t want to deal with the red tape involved in building there.

The Packers, however, seem ready to proceed with the project that will be unveiled this morning.

How they deal with the wetland is sure to be described at the press conference. State law requires that any wetland that is removed in the building of a project must be replaced at another location – something that is done quite often.

More on the project will be reported here after the Packers announcement this morning.

Headed to Lambeau Field today? Here’s what the DOT has to say

Road construction update in northeast Wisconsin

(Green Bay) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region is reminding motorists heading to Lambeau Field on New Year’s Day 2012, Sunday, January 1 for the Green Bay Packers/Detroit Lions football game that the road construction season continues on most major roads in northeast Wisconsin. While most projects will stop and two lanes of traffic will be open, drivers might still encounter road conditions in the work zones that could cause backups.

WisDOT strongly recommends motorists allow themselves additional time to reach their destinations.

Here is a list of the major roads in northeast Wisconsin most Packers fans will be traveling and the road conditions they should anticipate:

US 41

Brown County — Drivers will encounter 11-foot travel lanes and reduced shoulders in multiple locations along a 10-mile segment of highway. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from just south of Lombardi Avenue to WIS 29.

Winnebago County — Certain segments of 16 miles of highway, from WIS 26 to Breezewood Lane, have restricted shoulders and 11-foot travel lanes, especially in the vicinity of the US 45 interchange area.
