Previous Defensive Positions: Defensive Line

Outside linebacker is the premier position of the 3-4 defense, and with Clay Matthews secured in Green Bay for the foreseeable future, the young Green Bay Packers defense has something to build around. Though Matthews is the Packers most gifted defensive player, he can’t do it alone. Green Bay needs other players to step up at outside linebacker and provide consistent quarterback pressure on the field.

This is what the Green Bay Packers defense lacked last year. Consistent quarterback pressure outside of the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker. When Matthews missed four games last year with a hamstring injury, the Packers struggled to pressure the quarterback. Who will step up this year if Matthews misses time again?

The Packers need other edge rushers to emerge on the roster—not only to take some pressure off of Matthews on game day, but also to prevent the major drop-off in pressure that occurs if Matthews is out with an injury. The Packers lost Erik Walden and Frank Zombo in free agency, so they will be looking for young talent to emerge at the position. Second year players, Nick Perry and Dezman Moses, could add some juice to the Packers pass rush, and athletic defensive linemen, Datone Jones and Mike Neal, will also help the group out. The Packers could even see some contributions from unknown rookies at the position.

A lot of questions remain at the position heading into the 2013 season. Let’s see how the roster could shape out.

Outside Linebacker (6)

Safe – Clay Matthews, 6-3, 255 pounds; Nick Perry, 6-3, 265 pounds; Dezman Moses, 6-2, 249 pounds

Jan 15, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews (52) before the 2011 NFC divisional playoff game against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Matthews continues to be one of the elite pass rushers in the league, recording 13.5 sacks in 2012, but even more impressively, each year he seems to get better in all facets of the game. Matthews was arguably the Packers best run-defender last season, and even held up well against the pass when he occasionally dropped back in coverage. Matthews is an elite athlete and has a motor that doesn’t stop on the field. Green Bay made him the highest paid defensive player this offseason, and for good reason. He is the heart of the defense, and with a stronger supporting cast this season, Matthews’ play will continue to shine.

The only drawback with Matthews is the reoccurring hamstring injuries. So far, each year of his young NFL career, Matthews has dealt with a pulled hamstring. He missed four games last season because of this injury. Let’s hope this isn’t an issue that continues to dog him each season, and cut an excellent career short.

Perry enters the 2013 season with a lot to prove. After missing a majority of last season with a wrist injury, Perry is virtually a rookie this season. It is important, as a fan, to be patient with Perry’s transition to outside linebacker. Perry showed some promise in his limited action last season, showing good push at the line and quickness for a player his size. Perry has all the physical tools to be an excellent 3-4 edge rusher, so if he puts it all together and gets comfortable in the position, the Packers defense could have a real formidable one-two punch with Matthews and Perry. Perry doesn’t need to be an all-pro this season or record double-digits sacks to be effective. If he holds up well against the run and provides consistent pressure from the left side, this will greatly help out Matthews and the Green Bay defense.

May 22, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Perry (53) before organized team activities at Ray Nitschke Field. Mandatory Credit: Mary Langenfeld-USA TODAY Sports

Look back at week two against the Bears last season to see what Perry could mean to this defense if he plays to his potential. Perry consistently collapsed the pocket from the left side, freeing up Matthews, who recorded 3.5 sacks against Cutler and the Bears. Perry didn’t record a sack in this game, but his performance made a big difference in preventing Matthews from seeing double-teams all game. Watch Perry’s progress closely this offseason. His performance will be integral to the Packers defense taking the next step this season.

Moses is the only backup player whose roster spot is most likely safe this season. Moses recorded four sacks last year in limited playing time. He started for an injured Matthews in four games, and provided consistent depth at outside linebacker as he rotated with Erik Walden during games. Moses plays with a high motor and could push Perry for playing time. Moses will also prove to be important if Matthews has to miss some time with hamstring issues.

On the Fence – Nate Palmer, 6-2, 248 pounds; Andy Mulumba, 6-3, 260 pounds; Donte Savage, 6-1, 252 pounds

Palmer, Mulumba, and Savage are young, unproven rookies that should bring some good competition to outside linebacker. With Walden and Zombo departing in free agency, the Packers will need one or two of these players to step up and provide some depth at the position. All three players played defensive end in college, so we’ll see how well they transition to 3-4 outside linebacker in the Packers defense. They will each have a good shot at making the roster, so this will be a position battle to keep a close eye on in training camp this year.

Palmer is about the right size for a 3-4 outside linebacker, and showed some pass rush ability in college, recording 7.5 sacks and 27 quarterback hurries as senior for Illinois State. The Packers seem to really like the sixth round pick. Coach Greene went down to Illinois State prior to the draft to take a close look at Palmer in person, and seemed to really like the athletic defensive end. Palmer could be one of those surprise camp players that plays well above the round he was drafted.

Michigan Wolverines running back Vincent Smith runs with the ball past Eastern Michigan Eagles defensive lineman Andy Mulumba in the third quarter at Michigan Stadium. Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Mulumba was brought in as an undrafted free agent and is a big linebacker that can hold up well against the run. As a defensive end at Eastern Michigan, Mulumba didn’t have great production as a pass rusher, only recording 4.5 sacks in his last two years in college. However, Mulumba has a lot of raw ability as an edge rusher, and the Packers must like his potential. Maybe under the right tutelage, Mulumba can develop into a pass rushing outside linebacker. If anything, Mulumba will be placed on the practice squad until he develops further.

Savage is an undrafted rookie who was signed as a tryout player after the Packers rookie minicamp. Savage would be an undersized defensive end in the pros, so switching to outside linebacker seemed to be his only chance at making an NFL roster. Just like Mulumba, Savage has raw ability as an edge rusher and will be an undrafted rookie who will get a good shot at making the final roster this offseason. The Packers need young players to step up at outside linebacker, so expect a lot from the rookies at the position.

Other Options – Mike Neal, DE, 6-3, 290 pounds; Jamari Lattimore, 6-2, 237 pounds

It doesn’t look like there are any long shots at outside linebacker on the roster currently. Each player at the position should be in contention for a roster spot, so instead, let’s take a look at some of the other options the Packers have at the position beyond just the players listed as outside linebackers.

Dom Capers has been experimenting with Neal at outside linebacker so far in OTAs. This has been one of the big surprises of the Green Bay offseason so far, and it looks like Neal is adjusting well to playing linebacker so far. Neal is a versatile defensive lineman who showed some pass rush ability last season with 4.5 sacks, and in the very least, Neal’s limited play at outside linebacker will allow Capers to get creative with some defensive packages.

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is brought down by Green Bay Packers defensive end Mike Neal at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Lattimore transitioned from outside linebacker to inside linebacker last offseason. Lattimore provides good depth at inside linebacker, but considering the depth at the position, Lattimore could be moved back to the outside, if needed. Lattimore’s versatility gives the Packers some options on game day.

Last year the Packers kept five outside linebackers on their 53-man roster (Matthews, Perry, Walden, Moses, Zombo), but this didn’t seem to be enough when the Packers were faced with injuries at the position during the season. I expect the Packers to keep at least five again with flex players like Neal or Lattimore providing additional depth at the position.

Green Bay will start Matthews and Perry with Moses as the top backup at the position, and will probably keep the best two players out of Palmer, Mulumba, and Savage.

Whatever happens, the Packers need to find depth at the position heading into the 2013 season, and with the roster full of young, ascending players, it should be an exciting position to watch develop in training camp.

We continue our offseason series discussing each position on the Green Bay Packers roster by turning to the defense. Just in case you missed the offensive positions you can catch them here: QB, WR, RB, TE, OL.

Let’s begin taking a close look at the defensive side of the ball by discussing the big men in the trenches. Every good defense has big, athletic defensive linemen that can consistently win at the line of scrimmage. After being gashed for 579 yards, 323 of those on the ground, against the Forty-Niners in last year’s playoff loss, it was evident the Packers front seven needed to improve, and that begins with the players on the defensive front.

With the Packers bringing in two young defensive linemen in the draft and veteran starters, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett, entering contract years, the defensive line will be one of the most intriguing position groups to watch this offseason. Hopefully, the new additions to the defensive line will bring some heated competition to camp, and the Packers will get the best out of their players. If Green Bay’s defense wants to hold up against the elite offenses of the NFC in 2013, they’ll need outstanding play from their defensive line.

Let’s see if the Packers have the talent and depth on the defensive line to lay a solid foundation for a strong defense heading into the 2013 season.

Defensive Line (11)

Safe – Datone Jones, DE, 6-4, 285 pounds; B.J. Raji, DT, 6-2, 337 pounds; Ryan Pickett, DT, 6-2, 338 pounds; Mike Neal, DE, 6-3, 290 pounds

May 10, 2013; Green Bay, WI, USA; Datone Jones (center) works out during the Green Bay Packers rookie orientation weekend. Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

The Packers demonstrated their commitment to improving their defense by spending their first pick of the 2013 draft on an athletic defensive lineman. Jones is a versatile 3-4 defensive end who possesses the strength to hold up well against the run and the burst to get into the backfield and pressure the quarterback. He is a rare talent for a player his size, and could prove to be a real difference maker on the defense if he plays to his potential. Green Bay’s pass rush could be formative this season with Jones added into the mix with Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, an improved Mike Neal, and B.J. Raji. Jones has the skills to be more than just the typical hold the point type of 3-4 defensive end and could be a real impact player, but it is also important to garner our expectations of the rookie defensive end and give him time to grow as player in 2013.

Raji and Pickett are both entering contract years, and it will be interesting to see if either one of them gets a contract extension before the 2013 season concludes. They have been anchoring the Packers defensive line the past few seasons, and are valuable leaders for the young position group.

Pickett has been arguably the Packers most underrated player since he arrived in 2006. He has been the defense’s best run-defender and is effective in holding the point and eating up blocks. Pickett’s contributions largely go unnoticed because he rarely makes splashy plays on the field, but he has been the most consistent performer on a defensive line that has had its share of struggles the past few seasons. Pickett’s play has deteriorated a bit the past two seasons, and at age 34, it’s more than likely that Green Bay will let him walk after this season. Despite being the oldest player on the team, Pickett still has a lot to offer this season and will still be a key contributor in the base defense.

2013 is a big year for Raji. It appears contract extension talks are on hold for the moment, and Raji will more than likely play out this year under his current deal. Raji could do himself and his bank account a big favor by having a fantastic year and returning to his 2010 form. Even though Raji is Green Bay’s most gifted defensive lineman, he has struggled at times the past two seasons. Raji’s play improved significantly when the Packers moved him from nose tackle to defensive end last season. Defensive end seemed to fit Raji better, but Green Bay still likes his ability to move to the nose or play on the inside in nickel packages. Raji should play at his best this season, proving to the Packers organization that he deserves a lucrative contract, and I expect Raji to be true leader on the defensive line.

Neal might be the only backup defensive lineman with a safe roster spot heading into 2013. Neal’s versatility has been well documented this offseason, and it is intriguing that Dom Capers is experimenting with him at outside linebacker. This demonstrates how athletic Neal is for a player his size, but for the time being, Neal is still a defensive end first. Neal offers some pass rush on the defensive line, and so far has the inside track for being one of the two defensive linemen in the nickel defense. It will be interesting to see how Neal’s role changes or expands based on Jones’ performance in his rookie season. Expect Neal to push Jones for playing time and maybe even some defensive packages where both Neal and Jones are on the field together.

On the Fence – Mike Daniels, DE, 6-0, 294 pounds; Josh Boyd, DT, 6-3, 310 pounds; C.J.
There is not much separating the players in this group, except for second year player, Jerel Worthy. Worthy may not even see the field this season because of the knee surgery he underwent in January. Worthy will begin the 2013 season on the PUP list, and will be strong candidate to ride the entire season on injured reserve.

Dec 23, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Tennessee Titans running back Jamie Harper (23) (left) rushes with the football as Green Bay Packers defensive end Mike Daniels (76) defends during the second quarter at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

With Worthy out of the picture this season, the Packers will keep at least two players between Daniels, Boyd, and Wilson. Wilson has the most playing experience. He started the last couple of seasons at defensive end and has done admirably against the run, but hasn’t done enough to standout. Wilson can provide good depth on the defensive line and should find himself with a roster spot because of his experience in the system.

Daniels is a high-effort player who brings some fight to the defensive line. Daniels had his moments last year and proved to be a solid rotational player. However, Daniels lacks the length to play a true 3-4 defensive end and lacks the bulk to play the nose in the base defense. Daniel’s lack of size will always work against him in the 3-4 system, and with Neal and Jones already competing for the nickel defensive linemen positions, I’m not sure where Daniels fits on the defensive line. However, the coaches seem to like him, and Daniels might bring enough tenacity that the Packers will find a spot for him on the roster.

As a fifth round pick, Boyd is a good bet for making the roster this season, even if he struggles in his first training camp. Boyd has the size and experience to play either defensive end or nose tackle. We’ll see how Boyd adjusts to the Packers’ 3-4 system. He could end up being Pickett’s replacement after the 2013 season.

Long Shots – Jordan Miller, DT, 6-1, 316 pounds; Gilbert Pena, DT, 6-2, 330 pounds; Johnny Jolly, DT, 6-3, 325 pounds

Miller, Pena, and Jolly all have long hills to climb to make the roster. Coming off the practice squad, Miller will compete with Pena for the backup nose tackle spot. Both Miller and Pena are good candidates for the practice squad this season, and with no clear nose tackle on the roster beyond Pickett, one of these players could even make the final roster.

Jolly’s return from a three year absence is one of the top storylines this offseason. Unfortunately, this feel good story may come to an abrupt end. The deck is stacked against Jolly to make the team, but like McCarthy said in his most recent press conference, if any player could do it, it would be Johnny Jolly. Recent reportsout of Packers mini-camp have stated that Jolly doesn’t look too bad in the limited action he’s seen so far. Maybe Jolly will make the team, after all. I know a lot of fans would love to see that. However, realistically Jolly’s best chance to make the team will be if the Packers are met with injuries at the position during training camp.

May 22, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers defensive tackle B.J. Raji (90) during organized team activities at Ray Nitschke Field. Mandatory Credit: Mary Langenfeld-USA TODAY Sports

Last year the Packers kept six defensive linemen (Raji, Pickett, Wilson, Neal, Worthy, Daniels) on their final roster and one on the practice squad (Miller). My early prediction is that Green Bay starts Jones, Raji, and Pickett, with Neal, Daniels, and Boyd providing depth. I also think they’ll retain one player from Wilson, Miller, and Jolly, and place Pena on the practice squad and Worthy on injured reserve.

For the Green Bay defense to take the next step in 2013, they’ll need improved play from their defensive line. With the additions of new young talent, the competition at this position should heat up this offseason, and consequently, make the overall position better. This group has the potential to anchor a solid defense heading into this season. It will be fun to see how this unfolds.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports photograph

Sometimes the NFL’s off-season does crazy things to analysts and fans alike and in the Green Bay Packers’ case this year, it seems to be the hybrid role that’s being carved out for Green Bay defensive end Mike Neal.

In the 2013 organized team activities (OTAs), Neal was seen playing a few snaps at outside linebacker, which is a bit of a departure from his normal defensive end role.

The 6-3, 294-pound fourth-year pass-rusher from Purdue certainly wouldn’t be the first player to make the transition from defensive end to outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme either.

2006 #1 overall draft pick Mario Williams experienced mixed results when he made the shift on the Houston Texans in 2011. But Adalius Thomas was named to the Pro Bowl for his pass-rushing exploits at linebacker after he was drafted as a defensive end by the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s certainly fun to speculate what these valuable OTA snaps at linebacker mean for Neal. After all, he is among the fastest and quickest linemen the Packers have. Outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene has already gone on the record raving about Neal’s athleticism, too – athleticism that linebackers require to run with pass-catching, move tight ends.

Mike Neal gestures to the crowd for sacking Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (not pictured) during the second half at Soldier Field. The Packers beat the Bears 21-13. Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports photograph

Certainly a position change would be designed to take advantage of Neal’s ability to get to the quarterback. According to Pro Football Focus, Neal rushed the quarterback on nearly 77 percent of his game snaps in 2012, finishing with 4.5 sacks. And any pass-rushing help that Green Bay can find to keep double teams off of perennial Pro Bowler Clay Matthews would obviously be welcomed.

But Neal’s new reps at outside linebacker should not be construed as a response to the Packers utilizing their first round pick on defensive end Datone Jones. Nor should it be a seen as an attempt to light a fire under last year’s first round outside linebacker Nick Perry, who had an underwhelming six-game rookie campaign that ended with a trip to injured reserve (wrist).

In this ever-changing NFL, versatility is king. The New England Patriots have built a dynasty under that belief. Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy and defensive coordinator Dom Capers have told the media that this experiment is not to give Neal a new position, but rather to increase his value to Green Bay’s defense.

The Packers still list Neal as a defensive end on their website. And Neal has already said that he has not been asked by anyone on the coaching staff to shed pounds off of his massive frame to fit a more conventional outside linebacker’s body type.

Jones and Perry are already penciled in as starters in their respective positions this year. And it’s pretty unreasonable to expect that an oft-injured veteran in Neal will supplant either player for Week One of the season.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (10) scrambles from Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Brad Jones (59) and defensive end Mike Neal (96). Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports photograph

That said, it will also be fairly surprising if Neal isn’t asked to take snaps off the bench to keep both players fresh as they transition to their first full seasons in the NFL.

Neal’s position certainly won’t be changing anytime soon. But it’s clear that his role and expectations from the coaches have already increased significantly from where they were just one year ago.

After becoming a member of the self-entitled “dream team,” Jenkins found it difficult to live up to his contract.

Though Jenkins started all 32 games for the Eagles over the last two seasons, he had just 9.5 sacks over those two seasons. His sack total is way down compared to 2010 when he 7 sacks in just 11 games for the Green Bay Packers.

It appears the Eagles are trying to get younger with the new hiring of former University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly. Along with Jenkins, the Eagles have mulled releasing former All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, and have even stated they will release him if he doesn’t agree to restructure his deal.

So what does this all mean for the Packers?

Well, as we all know the Packers are thin at the defensive line position. C.J. Wilson and Mike Neal haven’t come close to filling the big shoes that Jenkins left when he departed Green Bay. Should the Packers consider brining back Jenkins?

I am in favor of bringing Jenkins back. He understands Dom Capers’ defense after playing in it and excelling in it for two seasons. Since he hasn’t played well the last two seasons he will probably be relatively inexpensive for the Packers. The Packers also have been rumored to be interested in defensive tackle Chris Canty, formally of the New York Giants.

Cullen Jenkins celebrates a sack with the Packers.

Packers’ beat writer Tom Silverstein has tweeted several times today that he thinks the Packers would be interested in bringing back Jenkins, for the right price, of course.

In any event, a defensive line of B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, Chris Canty and Mike Neal, along with the other depth, makes the Packers’ defensive line a strength for a defensive that has struggled at that position the last two seasons.

This past April, former Packer great Leroy Butler walked onto the stage at Radio City Music Hall and announced the selection of the future of the Packers defense: Jerel Worthy.

The Packers took Worthy with the 51st pick of the draft, which raised eyebrows in Packer Nation. Worthy came with a lot of baggage, the same type of baggage from which Ted Thompson normally avoids. While playing at Michigan State, the defensive end developed a reputation for being lazy and taking plays off.

After being drafted Worthy embraced his reputation by saying “I take plays off just like everyone else,” which made many cringe. There were also criticisms of his play. Many scouts said Worthy didn’t possess the ability to shed the offensive lineman and work in space. But with the right coaching staff I feel all of this can be fixed.

Through training camp I haven’t heard much from Worthy other than that he is a high energy player who has treated every play like it was an in-game situation. That last sentence signifies that the man has started to change his ways.

I think that Worthy is the key to getting this defense back into championship form. I’ll even go out on a limb and say Worthy is the next great Packer defensive lineman.

Worthy plays with a mean streak, and this is what this defense has been missing. If Worthy can put his energy and attitude into playing football then I believe he will fill the hole left by Cullen Jenkins.

In college, Worthy took on a lot double teams. This allowed his defensive mates to take advantage and penetrate the backfield. This fact alone should bring a smile to Clay Matthews and BJ Raji’s faces.

He doesn’t need to be an immediate All-Pro defensive end this season, he just needs to have enough of an impact to make his defensive mates better. Worthy possesses something that CJ Wilson, Mike Neal, and Jarius Wynn don’t seem to have: aggressiveness.

Worthy will get his chances to show his abilities with Anthony Hargrove serving an eight game suspension. If he stays healthy he could start making his impact in week 1.

During Thursday’s preseason game against the Browns, and the remaining two games, keep your eye on #99 as he starts to get acclimated to the game.

Focusing specifically on the Packers, it comes as no surprise that their main focus point will be to determine which 11 guys on defense will give the Packers the best chance to win. If we are just focusing on winning, then the Packers’ defense brought in a record of 15-1.

Unfortunately, this was because the offense carried the defense to victories last season and is how, ultimately, the Packers would fall in the first round of the playoffs against the New York Giants.

So as training camp approaches, nearly every position on defense will have a battle of some sort. Considering how the Packers, this offseason, drafted mainly defensive players and even dipped into free agency for defensive players, there will be a lot of competitors fighting for a job. With that said, let’s break down the key battles Packer fans should keep an eye on for this training camp.

Packers defensive lineman Ryan Picket does a good job at stopping the run, but is limited in the pass rush. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

Defensive End: Ever since the Packers lost Cullen Jenkins in free agency last year, the Packers have been struggling to find a replacement. Ryan Pickett on the other side has been doing an adequate job stopping the run but he cannot generate pressure on the quarterback which was severely lacking last season.

Raji in the middle, after the Super Bowl season, was thought to have a breakout year with the Packers but never quite reached the level that most thought he could. Then we had the right defensive end which was a huge question mark all of last season. Players from Mike Neal, C.J.Wilson, and Jarius Wynn all took turns at the position last year but none really stood out from the rest of the pack. Some brought Packers fans a spark of hope for a little while but none of the three had complete consistency. This forced the Packers to make moves by drafting Jerel Worthy in the second round, bringing in Anthony Hargrove from free agency, and bringing in Phillip Merling also from free agency. These are three players who seem to be right in the mix to contend for the starting position in training camp. Players from last year like C.J.Wilson and Mike Neal also have been working hard and should get a fair shot to fight for the position.

Who will take over the outside linebacking position opposite Clay Matthews for linebackers coach Kevin Greene. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

Outside Linebacker: Similar to the defensive end position of last season, players on the opposite side of Clay Matthews generated nearly no production and the Packers had to flop starters from week to week in order to find someone who could separate from the rest of the pack. Unfortunately, nobody ever truly stepped from the pack and the Packers’ defense suffered tremendously.

Players who took turns starting last season included Eric Walden, Frank Zombo, and Brad Jones. Also, we must keep in mind that injuries at this position plagued the Packers all season with all three having injuries at different points during the season. The Packers’ management responded by drafting Nick Perry from USC in the first round of this year’s draft. \ Perry has major athleticism and the Packers hope that he could be the missing piece to the defense.

Other players to have a shot in training camp include another rookie in Terrell Manning, second-year veteran in Jarmari Lattimore, and another second year veteran in Vic So’oto who had his moments in his short playing time last year. This will be arguably the most intriguing position battle this camp.

Safety: It’s a lock that Morgan Burnett will hold his starting position this season but losing Nick Collins on the other side threw up another question mark in the Packers’ defense. I have to say that many, including me, believed that Nick Collins was a big part of the defense but never really thought of him as being the leader on defense. Once he went down with his injury, I and many others were stunned at how important Collins truly was for the Packer defense.

With perennial Pro-Bowler Nick Collins no longer with the team, the question about who will replace him is one of the biggest heading into training camp. Raymond T. Rivard photograph

With Collins once being the player who made sure everyone was lined up right on defense being gone, the Packers’ defense seemed lost at times. Many big plays occurred and could have been avoided if everyone was lined up correctly. The player who took over for Collins was Charlie Peprah, who played very well, but the lack of communication hurt the Packers severely last season.

With that said, training camp is approaching and so is a successor to Nick Collins.

But who will it be?

Names that come to mind will be Charlie Peprah, second-year player M.D. Jennings, practice squad standout Anthony Levine, and maybe even rookie Jerron McMillian. Regardless of who it is, it is going to be a very difficult task to replace Nick Collins.

Offseason workouts are well under way now as teams try to figure out who will start and who will make the team. Some will be cut, some will lose starting spots, and some will become starters.

So, what position battles do the Packers have?

Defensive End

Both defensive end spots on the line are filled with competitors such as as veterans Ryan Pickett, Mike Neal, Anthony Hargrove, and rookie Jerel Worth. They are all looking to claim a starting spot. Hargrove is a candidate to be cut due to his suspension but he could also be a rested lineman for later in the season. Rookie Jerel Worthy has tons of skills that can make him a starter as he and Mike Neal are the two favorites. Ryan Pickett could be in danger of being cut if he doesn’t win a spot in the starting line. Rookie Mike Daniels can force him to be cut if he performs well over the summer and if Pickett does not win a starting spot. This will be a very interesting battle.

May 22, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews (52) talks to fellow linebacker Nick Perry (53) during organized team activities at Ray Nitschke Field. Mandatory Credit: Mary Langenfeld-US PRESSWIRE

Outside Linebacker opposite Clay Matthews

Erik Walden and rookie Nick Perry will definitely be the two players battling for this starting spot as the Packers will have to decide who can make more of an impact as a playmaker. Walden has proven an ability to get into the offensive backfield and has shown he’s a sure tackler. The Packers must have thought this, too, as they decided to bring him back for this season thinking he could be a starter. Nick Perry was very good at sacking the opposing quarterbacks at USC. I think this will be Perry’s job to lose as Perry has a track record in college of being a dominant pass rusher. Perry should make a great partnership with Clay Matthews. The one thing that could help Walden is that Perry is moving from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker, but that transition should not cause any problems.

Jan 1, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers cornerback Jarrett Bush (24) during the game against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field. The Packers defeated the Lions 45-41. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Nickel Cornerback

With a move to safety imminent for Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams and Sam Shields will become the two starting cornerbacks. This means that Jarrett Bush and rookie Casey Hayward will battle to be the nickel cornerback as Bush’s experience gives him the early lead in this race. However, Hayward has some very good ball hawking skills and definitely will get a shot to beat out Bush. However, Bush seems like the favorite and will probably at least start the season as the nickel cornerback though Hayward could take his job during the season.

After his suspension of eight games was announced, the question is whether the Packers will keep him. Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

With the announcement yesterday that Anthony Hargrove, the Packers’ newly-acquired defensive lineman, would be suspended for half of the season because of his involvement in “bountygate” as a member of the New Orleans Saints, the question about whether Green Bay will keep him around begs to be answered.

The knee-jerk reaction, one that many feel will be completed by Packers’ general manager Ted Thompson, is to cut ties immediately.

But I don’t think that’s the answer.

First of all, the Packers picked up the experienced player for a song. Second of all, the guy will still be able to work out and provide some competitive depth at the position as the team continues to develop their younger players. Just because he’s been suspended for half the season doesn’t mean the Packers can’t still benefit.

If they keep him, the Packers could utilize him for the stretch run starting in November. Inevitably, there will also be injuries along the line by that time in the season and he will certainly be some fresh legs who could provide quality minutes.

In my mind, the more important question is whether the Packers will keep Mike Neal. Yes, he’s also been suspended for four games and has spent the past two seasons injured. Though he came back from a knee injury last season, he was like a ghost player. He literally had no statistics and simply filled a roster spot.

Though Hargrove’s checkered past may scare some, at least he’s a player who made an impact on the field. My hope is that he’s learned his lesson, has moved on and could give the Packers a couple of quality seasons at a position that is crucial for a team’s overall success.

So, the bottom line for me is the team’s success. Though he’s gone for half the year, Hargrove still has significant value for the Packers. Let Ted Thompson and head coach Mike McCarthy worry about the character issue. Had they been worried about it before, they wouldn’t have signed him. Surely, they were aware of the baggage and possible suspension before they signed on the dotted line.

It’s time to move on, concentrate on building team chemistry, develop the young players and bring Hargrove back into the fold when the suspension is lifted.

It’s finally here. NFL. Draft. Day.

After all gnashing of teeth, indigestion and heated arguments, it’s time to throw all the mocks away and get ready for the reality check that is the actual naming of names.

When Commissioner Roger Goodell heads to the podium tonight to announce the first pick of the much ballyhooed first round, we can all start with a tabula rasa – a blank slate.

Frankly, I’m looking forward to it. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of the bazillion mocks, the upsides, downsides, 40-yard dash times, the vertical leaps and the best player available. I feel all those things should kept to those in the war rooms and to let them do their jobs.

Now, as journalists, our job is to take a look at what transpires and then use our worldly knowledge to pick apart team drafts and start assigning grades and opinions about the winners and losers.

As for the Green Bay Packers, it’s time to Trust in Ted. Though we know the general manager is probably in control in the Packers’ draft room, we also know that he is getting information and birds tweeting in his ear right up until the time the phone call is made and the trigger pulled … but you also know that head coach Mike McCarthy is getting his two cents worth in as well. We wonder just how influential he is in the final decision. He’s got to have some say. After all, he is the guy who has to work with these players.

Anyway, get excited. I, for one, am looking forward to this draft. While I feel the team has got to draft defensive players up front, I am really excited to see if the team goes away from what all the experts are saying and pulls players that might not be at the top of everyone’s list. Thompson has been known to do that before. Let’s just forget about Justin Harrell and Mike Neal and move on.

So, without further adieu, here is a look at the Packers potentials for tonight. Take a look.

However, a bit of advice – you might want to ignore it once the teams are on the clock. Just like all the mocks that have been developed over the past few months, this piece will probably be null and void once the action starts tonight. But we’ll see.

You can also see this posting at NFL Mocks.

Q. What are the team needs for the Green Bay Packers heading into the draft?

The loss of Nick Collins could play a major role in how the Packers draft this weekend. Jason O. Watson-US PRESSWIRE

A. Defense. Defense. Defense. The Packers ranked dead last among the 32 teams in 2011 and it was no accident. The Dom Capers-led unit was clearly hurt by the losses of defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins and the injury to Nick Collins. They were a unit without leadership and purpose.

Ted Thompson’s first goal will be to restock the defensive line and linebacker positions. If he can also throw in a solid defensive back, he will be even further ahead. With 12 total picks, Thompson might just do some wheeling and dealing, especially in the first couple of rounds, but he could also surprise everyone and deal down to accumulate even more picks. But given the fact that 12 drafted rookies would have a very difficult time cracking the lineup of a team that went 15-2 last season, I highly doubt Thompson would look to add quantity over quality.

Look for the Packers to draft either a defensive lineman or outside linebacker with the first couple of picks; and then follow those picks up with an offensive lineman, a defensive back, a running back and a quarterback in the later rounds. The rest will be simply players to pad the roster and add competitive depth.

Q. Who are some prospects you’d like to see end up with the Green Bay Packers?

USC's Nick Perry could be a great pick if he's still on the board. Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

A. I would love to see the Packers add a defensive lineman such as a Melvin Ingram, Quinton Coples or a Courtney Upshaw, but we all know they most likely will be quickly nabbed in the early picks of the first round. However, if a Nick Perry or Whitney Mercilus is still on the board when the Packers pick at 28, Thompson should pull the Trigger. However, we wouldn’t kick a Vin Curry, Andre Branch or a Chandler Jones out of bed either. Peter King says the Packers will pick Michigan State’s defensive tackle Jerel Worthy, which could be a coup for the longterm and a solid pick for the Packers. Another intriguing prospect who might be an interesting defensive pick and who would be a great pick for the Green Bay Packers is Boise State’s Shea McClellin – I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Thompson go after him.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Packers’ need for depth and longterm effect on the line is evident. Left tackle and center are the two most glaring needs, but quality is always most important when considering drafting for the line. Of course, Peter Konz’s name always comes to the forefront, but Thompson’s effort to grab center Jeff Saturday has softened the need for the team to go after a top-rated center right away. Thompson’s ability to pick solid linemen in the later rounds is well-known and he may even be able to land an undrafted free agent who could help the team.

Picking a running back and even a quarterback, in my estimation, is just as important. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Packers put a premium on a running back who could add to its already somewhat solid stable. Ryan Grant is probably gone, and with injuries to James Starks and last year’s rookie Alex Green, the Packers are left with second year man Brandon Saine. You might see the team try to draft Chris Polk out of Washington, or a Doug Martin out of Boise State.

Would Kirk Cousins be a good pickup for the Packers? Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

At quarterback, the Packers have more of a need than Thompson has admitted. The loss of Matt Flynn moves untested Graham Harrell to number two. The need is evident, but Thompson most likely will draft to develop at the position. A Kirk Cousins from Michigan State is an intriguing prospect, and might be available to the team around the fourth round. But don’t count out a Ryan Lindley of San Diego State or even Russell Wilson from right here in Wisconsin.

Q. What would represent a successful draft in your opinion?

A. If the Packers can nab a solid defensive lineman (defensive end or tackle), an outside linebacker that can be a bookend for Clay Matthews to draw some attention away from him, an offensive lineman, a running back and a quarterback, the Packers will have had a successful draft. I don’t see Ted Thompson moving too far away from the team’s obvious needs, though he says he doesn’t draft that way. According to him, it’s always the best player on the board. Well, in my estimation, that’s fine, but at some point the team has to address the team needs as well. Last year, Thompson decided to go with who he had at defensive lineman and outside linebacker and it came back to bite the team in the long run. Hopefully, Thompson learned a lesson with that tactic and will look at the overall picture more intently this time around.

Q. Give us a bold prediction for your team.

A. My bold prediction is that Thompson will trade up at least five picks to select USC’s Nick Perry in the first round, giving up a couple of later round picks to do so. Much like he did when the team selected Clay Matthews, I feel that if the Packers can hang on to their 28th pick and nab another in the early to mid-20s, they will have two solid first round selections that will have an immediate impact. The team can afford to give up a couple of later round picks to make that happen.

According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, third year defensive end Mike Neal will be suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season for using steroids.

Since 2010, the Packers defense line has had awful luck:
• Johnny Jolly has been suspended and jailed for drug use;
• Justin Harrell, a first round draft pick, could never get healthy;
• And now Mike Neal, who flashed potential before getting hurt in his rookie season, wasn’t effective last year and now will be hard pressed to contribute in 2012.

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Twitter is blowing up today with all the banter about free agency.

Believe it or not, the Packers have also elbowed in among the tweets about big signings (Colston) and trades (Brandon Marshall). But it’s certainly not good news for those who follow the Green and Gold.

It sounds like Scott Wells has targeted a new offensive line to anchor (more on this later) and defensive lineman Mike Neal has been suspended for use of illegal substances …

So, the questions that pop to mind are whether the Packers can make the necessary deals and/or adjustments to its offensive line to make up for the loss of Well, considered their most consistent lineman of the past few years. The drafting of Peter Konz out of Wisconsin has been bantered about, but Packers GM Ted Thompson would probably have to trade up to get him, which would mean the loss of draft choices in later rounds – something Thompson doesn’t like to do.

As for Neal … can we say bust? He was a much touted draft pick, but injuries got the best of him and his potential soon turned to disappointment. He rushed back from an injury last year because he felt he had to play (which is true), but he contributed absolutely nothing to the Packers and probably hurt the team.

What a way to start the beginning of a new year. Let’s hope it’s not the harbinger of 2012 for the Packers. There’s got to be better news down the road.

With the 2012 draft coming up in a month, writer Jonathan Schweitzer will take you on a series of stories that take a look back at the Packers 2011 National Football League Draft.

Coming off a Super Bowl win, the Packers hoped to solidify a few key positions in the 2011 NFL draft.

Despite his public utterances, team GM Ted Thompson’s strategy is not always to take the best available player. Knowing that few, if any rookies make an immediate impact, the Packers’ strategy is geared toward long-term team-building, allowing rookies a year or two to hone their craft before becoming starters or major contributors.

Prior to the 2011 draft, the Packers had few immediate weaknesses that needed to be addressed. Instead, Packers brass anticipated needing future starters on the offensive line and the defensive backfield to eventually replace aging stars Chad Clifton and Charles Woodson. They also must have known that they were not going to re-sign Cullen Jenkins.

But if history has shown us anything, its that the Packers won’t make a bold, short-term move to correct an immediate need. For instance, Jenkins’ replacement, the 2010-11 injury of Mike Neal was counted on in 2011, but couldn’t shed his injury-prone label to make up for the loss of Jenkins in 2011.

Round 1
Derek Sherrod, OL, Mississippi State

Sherrod was drafted as the heir-apparent to Chad Clifton. The Packers obviously thought that he was good enough to contribute right away and put him in the competition for left guard, which was easily won by T.J. Lang. He couldn’t even win the top back-up tackle position, which went to Marshall Newhouse.

Sherrod did contribute in spots, including the Atlanta Falcons game and the first Detroit Lions game. He had solid, but not perfect outings and seemed to be on his way to competing for Clifton’s left tackle spot with Newhouse in training camp until a broken leg left him with months of healing and recovery time. He’s not expected to seriously compete for a starting job in 2012.

See Part II tomorrow …

The news out of Mike McCarthy’s mouth today regarding the Packers injury report was better than expected.

Though he wouldn’t commit to whether running back James Starks would play or not, he did say that Greg Jennings will be ready to play Thursday and that linebacker Frank Zombo will again see the field.

However, in my mind, the best news came when he said that defensive end Mikee Neal’s snap count should increase this week. Neal has been out since the start of the season but played in the nickel package for the Packers last Sunday versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Though he failed to have an impact – in fact, he didn’t record a single tackle, having him available is a huge factor.

Not only will it give the Packers a fresh face and fresh legs on the defensive line, it will also allow the Packers coaching staff the option of giving B.J. Raji some snaps off … many feel his production has suffered because of his large amount of time on the field. Last year at this time he had 6.5 sacks compared to the two he has this year.

Anything that could infuse some energy into the Packers’ defense is a good thing and having a healthy Mike Neal back playing with the team will go a long way in making that happen.

Part 1 of a 3 part series

After the Packers-Chargers game, the leader of the Packers’ defense, Charles Woodson, implored Defense Coordinator Dom Capers to get Clay Matthews more involved in the pass rush. Could this plea (and the Packers’ 5th surrender of 400 plus yards) have been avoided?

Let’s put that question a different way, should Cullen Jenkins have been preparing for Minnesota Monday night rather than lining up for the Eagles against the Bears??

It’s a question that underlines the Packers’ approach to team-building. Put succinctly, even casual observers of the Packers know that when it comes to free agency, the Packers aren’t biting. This oft-criticized strategy was vindicated earlier this year with the arrival of the Lombardi trophy to Green Bay.

The Packers strategy in free agency is clear: They don’t do it.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I took a peek at the Green Bay Packers’ injury report issued this afternoon.

For the first time in ages … and I mean at least the past year … the report shows that the Packers are just about injury-free. Take away the players on IR and those not expected back for some time, such as Chad Clifton and Mike Neal, and it’s nearly spotless.

In fact, it’s so clean and so different from what we see on the San Diego Chargers’ side that we could probably do a hop, skip and jump in celebration.

Well, maybe not, but it sure is something to be pleased with … especially at midseason.

Here’s what the Packers published today. Looks like for the first time in recent memory the Packers are going to hit the field in relatively good shape

Mike Neal’s much anticipated return to the active roster just got a bit closer, according to Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

While ruling both Neal and left tackle Chad Clifton out for Sunday’s game at San Diego, McCarthy was more upbeat about Neal’s return than Clifton’s.

He described Clifton as still looking at “multiple” weeks before he has a chance to hit the field again.
Neal was slated to fill the spot vacated when Cullen Jenkins signed with Philadelphia just before the start of training camp. However, the second year player who was out all of last season, injured his knee in a non-contact drill during training camp and has been out since.
In his place, the Packers have used players by committee and have hopes that Neal will be back sooner than later.
Clifton suffered a serious hamstring injury in the Atlanta game, but has been replaced by Marshall Newhouse who had been filling in for Bryan Bulaga at right tackle prior to moving into Clifton’s left tackle position.

Though Newhouse gave up two early sacks to Jared Allen in the Minnesota game, he has played well.

The good news is defensive end Mike Neal saying he is expecting to play yet this season, but he just doesn’t know when that will be. He said for sure it wouldn’t be the game after the bye (at San Diego), but that it would be at some point.

“I feel good. I’m optimistic. I hope it works out,” Neal told JSonline Friday. “I can only take it in stride.”

“I can only do as much as I’m able to, as much as they let me do,” Neal said. “I’ll just go from there. I’m still optimistic. I still hope to play this year but when? I just don’t know.”

The not-so-good news was that Ryan Pickett suffered a mild concussion yesterday and was being listed as questionable on the Packers injury report.

Mike McCarthy just finished his Monday afternoon presser.

Here are some of the highlights from the session with the press:

On the injury front, Sam Shields suffered a concussion when he took a hit while trying to run an interception out of the end zone; outside linebacker Frank Zombo, who played in his first game back after a broken scapula, hyper-extended his knee … McCarthy didn’t know the severity of his injury. He did say that Shields will go through the series of tests that go along with concussion recovery. It is unclear whether Shields will play this week vs. the Vikings.

When asked about the wind and the role it played in Sunday’s game, McCarthy said, “the wind factored in the game … you could see ball moving … It’s something talk about in the pre-game … you have to focus on ball … it was a challenge.”

When asked about the possibility that the Vikings may play rookie Christian Ponder, McCarthy said that the team will prepare for both quarterbacks … they may have to go back to preseason tape to watch Ponder, but that didn’t seem to bother the head coach. “That’s all part of the preparation. We’ll be prepared either way.”

Today’s news from Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy that Mike Neal’s unexpected surgery to his injured knee is bad news for the second year player, but good news for Jarius Wynn, the defensive lineman who has stepped in and been a big surprise.

Neal was projected to have a breakthrough year, recovering from a season-ending injury last year and stepping into a starting role when Cullen Jenkins left in free agency.

Now with McCarthy’s declaration that Neal will miss a significant amount of time, some may be feeling a sense of urgency or even emergency.

I don’t think the Packers are to that point yet. If Wynn can continue to play at a high level, the line will be just fine as long as there are no other injuries at that position. Getting Wynn valuable playing time early in the season will, in fact, be to the benefit of the Packers. When Neal does recover from the surgery and gets back on the field, the depth at the position will be that much greater.

However, there are many “ifs” with that outlook. First, the Packers have to stay healthy and second, Neal does indeed need to make a full recovery and come back.

If Neal doesn’t, he will be quickly tabbed as injury-prone and could be on his way out of Green Bay as quickly as he arrived.

Many questions will be answered in the next few weeks. The defensive line will be tested this week as the Panthers will certainly try to establish a solid ground game to allow Cam Newton a chance to succeed with the pass. And with teams like the Bears and Vikings on the schedule – both of those teams like to pound the football – it will be interesting to see if the Packers line can stand up to the pounding.

Stay tuned …
