Professional football players dream of being selected to the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Few would hope they get votes at the political ballot box, but that’s exactly what we saw here in northern Wisconsin during the most recent Recall Election that had Democrat Tom Barrett trying to unseat Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

One individual Tweeted on his Twitter account that they had voted for Greg Jennings and after a check with Minocqua, Woodruff and Arbor Vitae town clerks found that a local had voted for Bart Starr. And while there was the usual Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck write-ins, one can only guess just how many counties actually recorded votes for other Packers players. You’ve got to believe that there had to be at least a few for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, cornerback Charles Woodson and linebacker Clay Matthews.

In the meantime, here’s a story by The Lakeland Times’ Joe VanDeLaarschot that explains the local situation at the voting booth.

That’s all I can figure was the case with my home town’s officials as they, in the middle of the night, removed the championship flags that had flown for nearly the past year.

They went up the pole about the first part of March 2011 and flew throughout the year.

And though the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl XLV flags that slapped in the breeze in the town of Minocqua just below Old Glory itself, had grown thin and worn, they were removed too soon.

It was only a couple of weeks that the Packers had disappointingly lost to the eventual NFC Champion New York Giants at Lambeau Field. The sting was still prevalent, and still is.

But the Super Bowl is still five days away. When the flags were removed, the Super Bowl was a good 10-12 days away.
