Crystal LoGiudice-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers are soft, at least that’s what Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and many within the Packers organization and across the NFL have been saying for some months now.

It’s time to toughen up, to lay the wood on some opponents and start playing the game with a mean streak that will make other teams sit up and take notice.

That’s why I’ve gone defense in the mock draft in which I was recently asked to participate. The mock is located over at zoneblitz.com … Click here to see the full draft. There are a couple of surprises in this first round – two of which come from Jon Merckle, senior blogger over at our Fansided.com sister site, The Viking Age. His picks emphasize the need for mean that seems to be taking place across the league.

While Merckle could have gone offense with his selections at 23 and 25, he also went defense. With the #23 pick, he selected Arthur Brown, Linebacker – Kansas State and with the 25th pick he took Jamar Taylor, Cornerback – Boise State.

At 26, I could have gone offensive line or defensive line or even running back, but I didn’t. I stayed with the trend and selected Matt Elam, Safety – Florida.

Here’s how I explained it …

The Packers have been deemed “soft” by many in the media, as well as those in the know in the NFL. The selection of Matt Elam will go a long way in alleviating the description of the Packer defense. Elam, though a bit undersized, is a hard hitter who plays well in the box – making running backs feel his punch. With the likes of Adrian Peterson and Matt Forte in the NFC North, the Packers need an enforcer in their defensive backfield. Elam fits that role and would be a great addition to the Packers defense.

I’ll leave it at that.

Do you think Ted Thompson will go offense or defense Thursday night?
The NFL draft is approaching, and now it’s time to play imaginary GM in this special seven-round mock draft for the Green Bay Packers.

It’s nearly impossible to predict how the draft will unfold. Every year provides plenty of surprise selections, last minute trades, and teams reaching to fill a need, and ultimately, screwing up everybody’s draft boards.

All we know as Packers fans is that Ted Thompson will select the player best available on his board. This should provide us some reassurance. Our team is in good hands — even if we don’t completely understand the science behind his methods. However, Thompson’s approach does make it difficult to conduct a feasible Packers’ mock draft, but alas, we try anyway.

Instead of being concerned with trying to get this one right and pinpoint who Thompson may select in each round, let’s do something different. Let’s pretend this year’s draft works out perfectly for the Packers. Everything falls their way and the players they target high on their board come right to them at the end of each round.

What would this draft even look like for Green Bay? This is even difficult to figure out, right?

But let’s give it a shot anyway — and with the caveat that this is just my best guess based on reading experts’ analyses of these players and where various mock drafts around the Internet have these players placed.

UCLA Bruins defensive end Datone Jones (56).
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports photograph

Round 1 – Datone Jones , DE, UCLA, 6-4, 283 pounds

What’s not to like about this pick? Jones played 3-4 defensive end in college and was very productive his senior year, recording 19 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks. Jones has great length and size to play on the edge and played very well against the run throughout college, and he has the frame to add a little more weight and bulk up without losing any burst. Jones also offers some inside pass rush ability, giving Green Bay an every-down defensive lineman (something they’ve been desperately missing since Jenkins departed). With B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett entering contract seasons and Jerel Worthy likely missing a significant amount of next season due to injury, the Packers’ top priority heading into this draft is strengthening their defensive line. Here is an instance where need and value meet and the Packers get one of the top 3-4 defensive ends in the draft.

South Carolina Gamecocks safety D.J. Swearinger (36). Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports photograph

Round 2 - D.J. Swearinger, S, South Carolina, 5-10, 208 pounds

Swearinger is electric. This guy really packs a punch, and his high-motor makes him a ball of energy on the field. He could bring a physical presence to the Packers’ defense they were desperately missing last season. Swearinger lacks ideal size for a safety, but he makes up for it with good agility and quickness. He’s a solid tackler, can play in the box in run support, and knows how to deliver a hit (check out some of his college highlights). His coverage skills are also solid, and if he was only a few inches taller, he would most likely be a first round pick. This could be the steal of the draft.

Round 3 – Stepfan Taylor, RB, Stanford, 5-9, 214 pounds

Jan 1, 2013; Pasadena, CA, USA; Stanford Cardinal running back Stepfan Taylor (33)

Here Green Bay gets their running back. A disappointing NFL Combine has dropped Taylor significantly on many draft boards. He posted a slow 4.76 40 time, which led many to wonder if Taylor has the explosiveness to be a productive back in the NFL. However, Taylor did improve his 40 to 4.63 at his Stanford Pro Day, and his production in college speaks for itself—rushed for 1,530 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior. Taylor also looked like the best back at the Senior Bowl, and his college game tape shows a back who has a natural knack for finding holes and making quick cuts. Taylor won’t wow anybody with his explosiveness and he isn’t great at any one aspect of the position, but he does do everything well and is a balanced runner. He is one of the best pass blocking running backs in this year’s draft — one reason I think the Packers will target him — and he can also be productive as a receiver. At the third round, Taylor will provide great value for Green Bay and his balance will compliment Dujuan Harris’s explosive running style.

Round 4 – David Quessenberry, OL, San Jose St., 6-5, 302 pounds

Quessenbery is one of the more versatile offensive linemen in this year’s draft. He spent most of his time at San Jose State playing left tackle, but Quessenbery is projected by some scouts as a guard or center in the NFL. Many see Quessenberry able to play any of the five offensive line positions, which would be a huge asset to Green Bay. Maintaining offensive line depth was one of the major struggles for the Packers last season and really came to hurt the team when Bryan Bulaga went down halfway through the season. Drafting Quessenberry would give Green Bay a player who could provide depth at both tackle and guard positions.

Marshall Thundering Herd wide receiver Aaron Dobson (3) makes a one handed catch. Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports photograph

Round 5a – Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall, 6’3’’, 210 pounds

Maybe Dobson won’t be here at the end of round five, but if he is, the Packers would find a lot of value this late in the draft (something Thompson is known for). Dobson’s tall frame makes him a good candidate as an outside vertical receiver in a pass-oriented offense. Dobson didn’t post great college numbers, but he possesses the physical tools to be a real weapon, especially down in the red zone. Dobson would provide a different type of receiver than is currently on Green Bay’s roster and would add depth to the roster after losing Jennings and Driver this offseason.

Round 5b – Jamie Collins, OLB, Southern Miss, 6’3’’, 250 pounds

The Packers need to add depth at outside linebacker. I still believe Nick Perry can do well starting opposite Clay Matthews, so this is why I have the Packers waiting this long in the draft to select another pass rusher. Collins doesn’t strike me as an every down outside linebacker. He struggles holding the edge against the run and lacks the strength to break through double-teams. However, Collins is quick and plays with energy. He can get to the quarterback and would make a great pass rushing specialist and situational player. The Packers could rotate him in on third downs to provide some extra juice in the pass rush.

Round 6 – Ryan Otten, San Jose St., TE, 6-5, 230 pounds

September 29, 2012;Annapolis, MD, USA;San Jose State Spartans tight end Ryan Otten (82) is tackled by Navy Midshipmen linebacker Vinnie Mauro (31) at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

Otten was a productive receiver at San Jose State and would give the Packers another receiving option at tight end. With Finley entering the final year of his contract and his future status as a Packer in question, it would be a good idea for Green Bay to find another receiving threat at the position. Even if Finley stays with Green Bay beyond next season, Otten would enable the Packers to utilize more two tight end sets in the passing game.

Round 7 – T.J. Johnson, South Carolina, C/G, 6-4, 310 pounds

Johnson has a good frame, but lacks athleticism to be a starter in the NFL. Johnson would add good depth at the interior line and could be a player Green Bay develops over the next few years into something more than just a backup.

There it is. Let me know what you think. Where did I get it wrong? Where did I get it right, in your opinion? Offer any suggestions on picks you would change. It will be interesting to see next week if any of the picks hit close to home.

By John Dewey

of Lombardiave.com

The big-name mock drafts seem to be focused on the Green Bay Packers keeping their pick at 26 and choosing a running back, tight end, safety or defensive lineman. When the needs are so many and the available talent is deep at these positions, just what could be some realistic options for the Packers to trade down?

Before you go there, fIrst consider some recent history. The New England Patriots in 2009 had the 26th pick in the draft. They traded it to the Packers for a 2nd round pick and two 3rd round picks. The Packers then selected Clay Matthews at the 26th spot. His pass-rushing ability and endless motor on the field will soon make him one of the highest paid defensive players in the NFL.

By the way, what did the Patriots do with their extra picks? With the pick they obtained from the Packers in the 2nd round, the Patriots chose cornerback Darius Butler. Butler has since been released by the Patriots and the Carolina Panthers and currently is on the Indianpolis Colts’ roster.

The Patriots chose Brandon Tate with one of the third round picks obtained by the Packers. Tate started 2009 on injured reserve and was released by the Patriots in 2011. He currently is on the roster for the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Patriots traded away the other third round pick obtained by the Packers.

So, you still want to trade down with the 26th pick? What is the relative trade value of the 26th pick if the Packers want to package it for other picks?

According to the frequently referenced trade value chart, the 26th pick is worth 700 points. A willing trade partner would offer a combination of picks that would equal that, or at least come close to it. Could the Packers get a low 2nd and a 3rd round pick from another team? Someone not in their division, since you don’t want it to really backfire in your face?

Look no further than the Cincinnati Bengals, whose 37th overall pick from the Oakland Raiders is worth 530 points on the trade value chart, and their own 84th round pick in the third round is worth 170 points, and you have a trade that provides equal value to each team according to the value chart.

Bjoern Werner
Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

With this trade, the Packers would have four picks in the first three rounds: 37th (from Oakland through Cincinnati); 55th; 84th (from Cincinnati); and 88th.

Without the trade, the Packers 4th pick would be the 122nd in the draft instead of the 88th.

Put yourself in the war room.

Who are the nine players they are likely to miss out on from picks 26 through 36? Is there another future star player in that range? To me the answer would await on draft day.

Looking at the various mock drafts, it appears to me that a potential star could drop to 26 in a position of need. So the wait and see approach will likely be the strategy before pulling the trigger on a trade down deal.

It is unlikely, yet not entirely impossible, that Bjoern Werner of Florida or DJ Fluker of Alabama could fall that far.

If there are no draft steals at 26, then a trade down could provide the Packers a better chance to adequately cover their multiple needs.

Just for fun, consider this fantasy package of the first four picks if they traded down for the Bengals 2nd and 3rd:

Christine Michael

They would cover of the positions of need and select two players they reportedly have a great deal of interest in – Quessenberry and Michael.

Of course, there’s as much chance of me getting this right as I have winning the Powerball. But that’s why we play. For the entertainment value.

Walterfootball.com has a draft value chart tool that fans can play with to make up their own draft day deals. This just takes it to another level in the art of the mock draft.

Thompson understands a couple of things: Rodgers will be a Green Bay Packer probably well after the GM retires and if that’s to occur, Thompson has to build his team around Rodgers smartly and efficiently to ensure his legacy.

He does that in this draft by first targeting the offensive line, moving on to defensive line, adding a wide receiver and then addressing the running back situation before possibly circling back to the offensive line.

So, here’s a look at my first four-round mock draft for the Packers:

• First round: Menelik Watson, offensive tackle, Florida State

• Second round: Margus Hunt, DE, Southern Methodist University

• Third round: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia

• Fourth round: Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M

For many, Watson is a reach, and project him falling to the early second round. However, for someone like Thompson and the Packers, they have got to draft an offensive lineman. Unless they know something we don’t about 2011 first round pick Derek Sherrod, they can’t afford to wait around any longer for him to heal up – not when we’re talking about protecting the blind side of the richest man in the league.

Watson would bring a mountain of a man to the line. Watson is raw, but with a huge upside. He is the type of player who will be coachable and an instant mix into the line.

Menelik Watson would be a solid addition to the Packers front five.

Todd McShay is a big fan and also projects the Packers taking Watson with that first pick. Here is what he has to say:

This might seem a little high for a player with an early-second-round grade, but Watson could make sense for various reasons. The Packers might not be totally sold on Marshall Newhouse as their left tackle, and there is concern about RT Derek Sherrod coming off a broken leg suffered late in 2012…. at this point there is not a running back, safety or wide receiver worth reaching for to fill a need. The Packers can’t win unless they improve their ability to protect Aaron Rodgers, and Watson could help in that regard.

McShay is right: The Packers are not sold on Newhouse (or Sherrod, for that matter) and if they don’t draft another tackle, the only other option is to move Bryan Bulaga to the left side and allow undrafted free agent Don Barclay to remain where he ended last season – at right tackle. While Bulaga was a left tackle in college, he was inserted and stayed at right tackle for a reason.

Here is how the official website of the Senior Bowl projects Menelik:

Menelik played basketball at Marist before transferring to Saddleback Community College (CA) to try his hand at football. Now, after only one season of major college experience at Florida State, he enters the draft with 13 career starts as a right tackle. However, with his frame, arm length and natural feet, he is a projection to left tackle and after seeing him at the FSU Pro Day, there is little doubt that he will successfully make that move in the NFL. It will take a “need” and some “nerve” to pick him in the first round, but within two years, he should become a long-time fixture at the LT spot.

And nfl.com had good things to ay about the 6-5, 314-pound Watson:

Menelik Watson has rare athletic ability on a tremendous frame. He has an explosive first step, light feet, and a powerful punch. There are a lot of things in his game that need to be cleaned up from a technique standpoint, and he will be 25 years old in his rookie season. He can project to either tackle spot, or possibly even inside, at guard.

Here’s what Rant Sports had to say about Watson in this video:

In the second round, the Packers will probably have the choice of three decent defensive linemen – Margus Hunt, Kawann Short, or Johnathan Hankins. I think they would select Hunt over the other two because the Packers seem to be looking to fill that outside position with someone with length and strength.

Well, at 6-8 and a great work ethic, Hunt will fill the bill. He’s a world class athlete who would help the Packers bolster its defensive line, especially in light of the fact that second year lineman Jerel Worthy probably won’t make back onto the field until well into the regular season. The Packers need depth on the line, while adding a player adept at stopping the run and bringing pressure. Hunt has those skills.

Here’s a video of Hunt …

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Moving on to the third round, you might be asking, wide receiver? Well, we all know how Thompson likes to keep his receiving corps fresh and with the losses of Greg Jennings and Donald Driver, bringing in a player like Stedman Bailey might be what one would consider a coup.

Compared with the likes of Jennings, there are a lot of good things to say about Bailey.

In fact, I’ve written about him before … Here’s some of what I had to say in a previous post:

For the past two years, Bailey eclipsed the 1,200 yard mark, catching 72 passes for 1,279 yards (17.8 yard average), and 12 touchdowns. He burned by those statistics in 2012 by catching 114 passes for 1,622 yards (14.2 yard average) and an incredible 25 touchdowns. Clearly, the guy knows how to find the end zone.

Whether he’s still around for the Packers and their mid-round selection remains to be seen, but if GM Ted Thompson sees a need to improve the team’s receiving corps, Bailey is as good of a choice as any.

He’s a solid player who might slip to the Packers in this round.

Here’s a video of Bailey:

Christine Michael

I expect that Thompson may go to a running back in the third round if a receiver like Stedman isn’t available, but if he gets his receiver in the third round, then look for TT to look to go running back with his next pick.

That pick for me is Christine Michael. Thompson is high on this guy and was said to be particularly interested in watching him at the practices for the East-West Shrine Game. Michael is an extremely talented running back with all the skills necessary to become an NFL player. However, his biggest downside seems to be reliability and maturity. If there’s one thing that can be addressed in Green Bay, it’s those two things. How many players have you heard say that their move to Green Bay has allowed them to focus on football and football only? The limited distractions in the NFL’s smallest venue have helped many players focus and this could be the case for Michael.

Because Michael overslept and missed a couple of meetings at the Combine, the question of reliability was raised. However, on the field he did everything he was asked. At the Combine, he was the top in the bench-press drill (27 reps), the vertical jump (43.0 inches), the broad jump (125.0 inches), the three-cone drill (6.69 seconds) and the 20-yard shuttle (4.02 seconds).

That’s why the Packers would get a steal with this guy, especially in the fourth round.

Here’s a video of Michael …

As we inch closer to the NFL Draft that’s just more than a couple of weeks away, the mock draft frenzy continues and on this Monday morning what better way than to look at one of the more interesting mocks I’ve seen the past couple of days - especially as it pertains to the Green Bay Packers.

That would be the mock put together by Andrew Parsons over at Draft Breakdown. While this three-round endeavor is interesting from first to last pick, the first round, especially the top 10, is pretty consistent with what’s been out there. However, as one gets out of the top 10 and into the meat of the first round, things start to get intriguing – and by the time one reaches the Packers’ pick at number 26, one’s eyebrows may raise.

Parsons has the Packers selecting outside linebacker Bjoern Werner of Florida State University.

Here’s how Parsons explains this selection for the Packers:

Earlier on in the process, Werner was mocked as high as #2 overall, but his stock has settled after a somewhat disappointing combine performance. While his pad level issues don’t make him an ideal 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker convert, I think he’ll transition more than adequately.

This is the first mock where I’ve seen Werner fall this far and Parsons is right – after being high on everybody’s list about three weeks ago, his stock has dropped, but whether he drops all the way to 26 seems unlikely. The German-born Werner is 6-3, 266 pounds of pure quickness. Though his explosion off the ball is well-known, his time in the 40 was 4.81, which means nothing when you’re talking about a defensive end about to become an outside linebacker if the Packers do indeed select him.

If he were to be selected by Green Bay, it would be the next chapter in the “journey” of a guy who, like all Europeans, started his athletic career on the soccer field. It wasn’t until he came to America through a high school exchange program did he get to play American football – a game with which he quickly fell in love.

“It’s been a great journey, so exciting,” Werner said is a recent interview. “This is just another step right here. Coming from Germany, dreaming about and watching the combine and just being here right now, it’s just amazing.”

Though he had limited play as a freshman, his college career took off as a sophomore when he recorded 11 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He lost about 20 pounds heading into the 2012 campaign, but that didn’t hurt his production. By the end of last season, his career numbers were impressive: 35 tackles for loss, 23.5 sacks, 18 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Again, if he falls all the way to the Packers at number 26, it might be difficult for Ted Thompson to go in another direction – but that’s a big if.

Here is a video of Werner …

Moving on to the second round, Parsons has the Packers selecting defensive tackle Kawann Short out of Purdue with the fifty-fifth overall pick.

Purdue Boilermakers defensive tackle Kawann Short
Sandra Dukes-USA TODAY Sports

Short, a defensive tackle who’s stock has risen recently despite not participating in the Combine or Purdue’s pro day, was rated fifth out of 181 DTs by nfldraftscout.com. He is 6-3, 299 pounds, and is described on windycitygridiron as “a power defensive tackle, primarily and particularly adept at stopping the run, Short is a penetrating, pass-rushing defensive tackle that can also make plays in the backfield.”

The question I have is whether Ted Thompson, if he indeed had the opportunity to select Werner with the first pick, would go for another defensive lineman in the second round of this draft – the team has glaring needs elsewhere and while Short may be an intriguing pick, I’m more inclined to think TT will go in another direction with this pick – but that’s just me.

Here is a video of Short …

In the third round, Parsons has the Packers going running back - Jonathan Franklin

UCLA Bruins running back Jonathan Franklin
Andrew Fielding-USA TODAY Sports

of UCLA.

Now, this is an interesting pick for a couple of reasons – Franklin has good speed and is described as “fast, tough and with an energetic running style.” Those attributes sound good on the surface, but for the Packers, catching the ball and blocking are two key elements that Ted Thompson values. It seems that Franklin does neither of these very well.

If the Packers are looking running back in the middle rounds, they could probably do better than Franklin. But better yet, the team should probably be looking at bolstering its offensive line at this point in the draft. With Aaron Rodgers set to head into the 2013 season as the league’s highest paid player, the Packers better find a way to protect him better than they did last year.

That means the team should be looking offensive line from the get-go. While defensive players are also needed, I feel Thompson will go offense in this draft like he did defense last year.

But then again, that’s why he gets the big bucks.

These are interesting selections, but I don’t think any of these players will land in Green Bay.

Here’s a video of Franklin …

Yesterday’s news that the Green Bay Packers were poised to make good on a contract extension for quarterback Aaron Rodgers was met with smiles across Packers Nation – if it is indeed true, that will be a great day.

Today, Chris Canty, a free agent released recently by the New York Giants, will be at 1265 Lambeau Avenue for a visit with the Packers. Anytime a free agent pays a visit to Green Bay, that’s also big news. We’ll be watching any developments with that situation closely,

But in the meantime, we continue to focus on the Draft with today’s daily Big 3.

Here’s is the March 4 Big 3

We here at lombardiave.com have been scouring the Internet in search of mock drafts to include in our Big 3 – three different mocks with three different selections. As we move along with each passing day, it gets more difficult to find mocksters who aren’t projecting the same selections … but we continue to find those who have differing projections. Some of you may think these guys are crazy for their picks, but it certainly makes the comment section a lively read.

So, we turn to our Big 3 selected today by Draftbreakdown.com’s Jimmy O’Brien, Draftbreakdown.com’s Jon Dove, and Blake over at Newnfldraft.com.

With the release of Charles Woodson, and the revolving door at running back, The Pack are sure to add talent in both the offensive and defensive backfields. However, in round one, the better value is at defensive tackle, where Short is a stout, sturdy run defender, who is sneaky quick as a pass rusher. Short joins 2012 draftees Jerel Worthy and Nick Perry, forming an impressive infusion of young talent to go along with Clay Matthews along the front in Titletown.

Lombardiave: Kawann Short is an interesting selection for the Packers and would offer a possible solution to the lack of depth the team is experiencing this offseason. With it a fact that Jerel Worthy probably won’t make it back onto the field until the halfway mark of 2013, if then, it’s important that the Packers shore up its D-line. Ted Thompson is making those attempts through free agency this offseason, but that’s always problematic, so if the Packers can also add depth with someone like Short in the draft, that would be a plus. The 6-3 300-pounder from Purdue might be one of those who will be on the board at 26 and he’s the best player in Thompson’s eye, don’t be surprised by this pick.

Greg Jennings is a free agent and Jones, Cobb, and Nelson are not number one receivers’ with Allen’s hands and route running he is a legit number 1 receiver and will make the Packer’s offense even better.

Lombardiave: Yes, the Packers already have depth at the receiver position, but like defensive backs, one can never have a shortage of quality recovers in this pass-happy league and especially on this pass-happy team. The losses of Greg Jennings to free agency and Donald Driver to retirement leaves the Packers short of experience and production – at least as far as Jennings goes. Allen is a huge talent – so huge that I just don’t see him available at this point in the draft. However, stranger things have happened in the past, but I frankly don’t see Allen getting through the first 25 picks without some wide receiver-hungry team snatching him up. The Vikings come to mind. But if he were still on the board, I would expect this pick to be a no-brainer for Thompson. Allen is a speedster who goes and gets the ball. Great hands, great speed and a natural fit to the Packers system. He’s a definite first-rounder. I just don’s see him still on the board for the Packers.

In order for the Packers to sustain their success, they must do everything possible to protect Aaron Rodgers.

Lombardiave: Dove is correct – the Packers have got to add depth along the offensive line and he would be an excellent choice – and may be one of those players still on the board at 26. However, he may also be one of those players who may still be on the board in the second round for the Packers to pluck up at that point. If the Packers are going to select an offensive lineman, I still think that they would go with someone who might be able to slide into the center position. Yes, Evan Dietrich-Smith is penciled into that spot, but he’s got to earn it. He finished out the season starting for the Packers at center, but didn’t burn up the field doing it. Would Thomas be one of those players who might compete for a guard or center spot? Maybe, but that’s Thompson’s call. I would rather see the Packers go with a Jonathan Cooper, Barrett Jones or even D.J. Fluker if they are going to go with an offensive lineman with this first round selection.

Ok, so it’s another new day and another beautiful day at that here in northern Wisconsin – home of so many fans of the Green Bay Packers. Blue skies, dazzling white snow, beautifully groomed snowmobile and ski trails. Yes, life is good.

It’s also a great day to look once more at the NFL Draft and what others are saying about whom the Packers should take with their first round pick. At number 26, the Packers select at the back end of the draft once again, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of talent left on the board. The real question is whether the Packers go with offense or defense. There are glaring needs on both sides of the ball.

A few days ago, we here at Lombardiave.com began ramping up our draft coverage with a daily piece highlighting random mock drafts and their Packers picks. Check out our site for these daily posts – here is yesterday’s.

Today we include mock drafts from NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah, CBSSports.com’s Dane Brugler, and Drafttek.com.

As always, we search for mocksters who have different views and differing selections for the Packers to give all our readers here at Lombardiave.com as large of a field from which to view as possible.

Where does Ted Thompson stand on the draft? We won’t know until number 26 rolls around.

But in the meantime, here is what today’s mocksters have to say. Enjoy …

Pugh is a very interesting player. His lack of length is a concern, but it wasn’t an issue on tape. He has the potential to play every position on the offense line. Green Bay needs to do a better job of protecting Aaron Rodgers and Pugh would do just that.

Lombardiave: Jeremiah hits the nail on the head about protecting Aaron Rodgers – something we here in Packers Nation know all too well. While many are projecting that the Packers will go with an offensive lineman in the first round, most are pointing toward Alabama’s Barrett Jones, North Carolina’s Jonathan Cooper, or Jones’s teammate, Alabama’s D.J. Fluker. All of these players offer their own strengths and all of them show the versatility that would allow them to play different positions along the line – something that Ted Thompson values. And if you saw my post yesterday about the Packers and their need to get the most value out of their players, you will understand how important a factor this will be in TT’s selection.

But to get back to Pugh, this is the first mock where I’ve seen him named as a selection for the Packers. There may be some reasons for it – number one, I question him as a first-rounder. He didn’t really rip it up at the Combine and in considering his designated strengths and weaknesses, it’s the weakness category that outweighs the strengths. However, he may also be the type of blue collar player who makes it in the league through sheer determination – that’s an intangible that can’t be measured. Jeremiah sees something in him that moves him to project him as a first-rounder. I’m not sure in TT will agree with him or not.

Arthur Brown, OLB, Kansas State

For most of the season, it seemed evident that the Packers needed to add more speed on defense and that was never more true than Green Bay’s loss in the playoffs to San Francisco. Brown has a nose for the ball with the position versatility to play inside or outside in the Packers scheme.

Lombardiave: OK, I really like the fact that Brugler takes a look at the Packers’ defense and projects a linebacker with speed and a nose for the ball … that’s a good thing. Yes, the Packers need help with the linebacking corps, I’m just not so sure the Packers go with an outside linebacker. Remember, they drafted Nick Perry last April as the projected complement to Clay Matthews and though Perry went down early in the season with injury, I’m thinking the Packers are still thinking that Perry is the answer.

Unless Brown can be moved inside or is being seen as a project with a learning curve, I’m not sure the Packers go this route. I like to think that the number one pick on a team’s draft board is one that can hit the field running … an impact player who can contribute immediately. I’m not sure the Packers are looking to draft a player who rides the bench. That’s happened way too often … consider Derek Sherrod.

But let’s take a look at Brown, for good measure. He’s 6-foot, 241 pounds – considered by some to be “undersized.” I don’t think so, not at the OLB position. In 2012, he recorded 100 tackles, seven of them for loss. He also had two interceptions and a sack. Because of his perceived lack of size, there are those who are projecting him as a second-rounder. That may be where he ends up, but there are some who feel that if he goes in the late first round he might be a steal. He is known for his drive and physicality, factors that could make up for his lack of size.

Will TT think Brown could be a steal? Time will tell. Either way, an interesting selection here and one that might come to fruition if TT feels the same way that Brugler does.

Here’s what our friend, Al Bracco over at Jersey Al’s AllGreenBayPackers.com had to say about Jones:

Much has been written this offseason already about the Packers lack of “length” on the defensive line (even DL coach Mike Trgovac has commented on it). Datone Jones not only brings the Packers some length, but also some much needed explosiveness currently missing from that spot. At UCLA, Jones played both Defensive Tackle and Defensive End, but wherever he lined up, he was a problem for offensive lines. Jones could be a dynamic five-technique for the Packers (with some added weight), which shouldn’t be a problem on his still-developing frame. Jones established himself as a top NFL prospect with a breakout Senior season, where he racked up 62 tackles, including 19 TFL while also adding 6.5 sacks. Jones is not your edge pass-rusher type, which is fine for a 3-4DE in the Packers’ system, but he does have the right combination of power and speed to force double teams and collapse the pocket against the pass.

Lombardiave: Well, I think Al does a great job of not only explaining what Jones would bring to the Packers defensive line, but WHY he would be such a valuable addition to the line. The Packers need someone who not only has the ability to move around on the line of scrimmage, but to disrupt the flow of the offense instead of simply taking on and holding blocks.

At 6-4, 280 pounds, he may seem light for a lineman, but it’s his speed and quickness that make him such an intriguing player.

Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com had this to say about Jones: “Jones, who posted 19 tackles for loss for the Bruins but “just” 6.5 sacks is used to being moved around, as he saw time at virtually every position along the Bruins’ defensive line throughout his career. His combination of quickness and strength results in an explosiveness that has been tough for the North defensive linemen to handle.”

Considering that the Packers have the bulk they need already on the line, what they lack is the speed and quickness that would add a new dimension.

I think that this selection might raise some eyebrows, but Jones seems to be the type of player that TT might take a chance on.

Here’s a video of Jones in action …

Today we take another look at three separate mock drafts and their projections for the Green Bay Packers first round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Below, you will find the author of the mock draft, their pick, and their brief on why they think that’s the right player for the Packers. We follow that with some statistics and our own thoughts on these particular picks.

Let us know what you think …

Peter Schrager believes the Packers will select Xavier Rhodes, cornerback, Florida State.

Xavier Rhodes
Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sport, cornerback, Florida State

The Packers spent their first six draft picks of 2012 on defensive players, and yet they still need more talent on that side of the ball. Casey Hawyard was a stud in his rookie year. If Rhodes slips all the way to 26, they could make for one of the league’s most talented young corner duos. At 6-1, 210 pounds, he ran a strong 4.43 40-yard-dash and jumps off the screen in his game tape.

Lombardiave: Rhodes is ranked as high as the number two cornerback and number 18 prospect in this year’s draft and many feel he will be a first-rounder. Whether he’s still on the board when the Packers pick twenty-sixth is a stretch, but not beyond the realm of reality. If he is, Ted Thompson would be helping the defense once again with an incredible athlete who would complement second-year player Casey Hayward, if he made it into the starting lineup among an already talented field of players in the Packers’ defensive backfield.

Rhodes picked off three passes last season and had eight over the past three years. Listed at 6-1, 217 pounds, Rhodes is known for his physicality and ability to press at the line of scrimmage. In matching up with NFC North receivers like Brandon Marshall and Calvin Johnson is a must and Rhodes could be that guy in the mix.

He’s an interesting prospect and could fit well into the Packers scheme.

Gil Brandt

Jarvis Jones
John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Gil Brandt believes the Packers will select Jarvis Jones, outside linebacker, Georgia, with the twenty-sixth pick.

Lots of anticipation surrounded Jones heading into the combine, but when the linebacker prospect chose to not work out, he more or less fell off the face of the Earth. He’s putting all of his eggs in his pro-day basket, which is dangerous. Nonetheless, he can be the kind of outside pass rusher Green Bay is looking for.

Lombardiave: Jones is another talented athlete who may drop into the late first round or into the second round of the NFL Draft – mainly because he didn’t work out at the Combine. While his pro day may help his chances of going in the first round, he is still probably a late first-rounder at best. That mean he may slide to the Packers and could be a nice choice to bring in.

Statistically, Jones put up monster numbers at Georgia. He led the nation last season in sacks (14.5, school record), had 24.5 tackles for loss – also a school record, and forced seven fumbles. Add to those numbers his 85 tackles, four defensed passes and even an interception and you’ve got stats that would surely register as a first-rounder. Will the Packers be interested? I guess it depends on where they rank him on their draft board. In my mind, he’s got to be near the top.

Brandon Birkhead of Turf Show Times projects Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama, as the Packers first pick at number 26.

Eddie Lacy
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

As you all know, I am completely against drafting running backs in the first round, but some team is going to pick Lacy in the first, I just know it. The Packers have to be sick and tired of constantly looking for a solution at RB. Lacy is not an explosive player, but he will grind out yards, and pass protect well.

Lombardiave: I would be beside myself if Ted Thompson pulled the trigger on a running back in the first round, given the Packers pass-first philosophy and the fact that he has never considered a running back with his first pick. But if there is one that may change his mind, it’s Eddie Lacy. The Packers have consistently looked for an every down back since Ryan Grant got injured in 2010 and haven’t had anyone who could foot the bill.

Lacy may be that guy. He’s a workhorse back who’s built with a strong lower body. Many compare him to Frank Gore. A positive for the Packers is that he seems capable of pass protecting, but would have to be coached up on that aspect of his game. He can also catch the ball out of the backfield. He had a giant year in 2012. As an All-SEC player he played 14 games, carried the ball 204 times for 1,322 yards, and scored 17 times. In addition, he had 22 receptions out of the backfield and scored twice on those receptions.

For a team looking to improve its presence out of the backfield, the Packers may see Lacy as the answer to their issues. Whether he would be an every down back in his rookie season would have to be determined by the coaches, but he would certainly add to the stable of players they already have in-house.

Take a look … and enjoy.

1. Indianapolis – QB Andrew Luck, Stanford. Comment: My advice to him in his first year is don’t be afraid to throw the checkdown pass. Remember that.

2. Washinston – QB Robert Griffin III, Baylor. Comment: Same advice I gave to Andrew Luck.

3. Minnesota – CB Morris Claiborne, LSU. Comment: The Vikings need to be able to compete against Greg Jennings, Brandon Marshall and Megatron.

4. NY Jets via trade with Cleveland – RB Trent Richardson, Alabama. Comment: The Jets trade Mark Sanchez and the 16th pick to move up to get the best RB in the draft.

5. Tampa Bay – OT Matt Kalil, USC. Comment: They’ve got to rebuild their offensive line to help protect Josh Freeman.

6. St. Louis – WR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State. Comment: Here’s a big target for their $50 miliion QB, Sam Bradford that they can pair up with Brandon Lloyd.

7. Jacksonville – CB Stephon Gilmore, South Carolina. Comment: They need help on defense.

8. Miami – QB Ryan Tannehill, Texas A & M. Comment: Tannehill worked with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman and he can learn from Matt Moore and David Garrard.

9. Carolina – LB Luke Kuechly, Boston College. Comment: They have a lot of problems at LB and Kuechly helps address that.

10. Buffalo – DT Fletcher Cox, Mississippi St. Comment: He will pair great with Mario Williams.

11. Kansas City – DT Dontari Poe, Memphis. Comment: They need cornerback help, but Romeo Crennel is happy to get more help on defense.

12. Seattle – DE Quinton Coples, North Carolina. Comment: Seattle is building a pretty good defense.

13. Arizona – OT Riley Reiff, Iowa. Comment: They gave up a ton of sacks last year and need to protect Kevin Kolb better.

14. Dallas – S Mark Barron, Alabama. Comment: I’d love to see the Packers move up here, but it would take too much to pull off the trade.

15. Philadelphia – WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame. Comment: This pick is for Michael Vick.

16. Cleveland, via trade with Jets – CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama. With him and Joe Haden, they have two very good young corners.

17. Cincinnati – DE/OLB Melvin Ingram, South Carolina. Comment: They need help on defense.

18. San Diego – OG David DeCastro, Stanford. Comment: The Chargers have to rebuild their offensive line and DeCastro is the best lineman available.

19. Chicago – DT Michael Brockers, LSU. Comment: The Bears need help in the middle of their defensive line.

20. Tennessee – WR Stephen Hill, Georgia Tech. Comment: The Packers could try to trade up to this spot, but if they don’t the Titans go for WR help.

21. Cincinnati – ILB, Dont’a Hightower, Alabama. Comment: They need CB help, which they didn’t get with their first pick, but they go with a linebacker.

22. Cleveland – RB Doug Martin, Boise St. Comment: The Browns need someone to replace Peyton Hillis and give newly acquired Sanchez some help.

23. Detroit – CB Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama. Comment: He’s got a lot of off-the-field problems, but he’s maybe the best cover guy in the draft and the Lions need help in the secondary.

24. Pittsburgh – DT Jerel Worthy, Michigan State. Comment: He’ll help replace Aaron Smith and eventually Casey Hampton.

25. Green Bay, via trade with Denver – LB Whitney Mercilus, Illinois. Comment: The Packers move up by trading their fourth-round pick and No. 28. He’s a little raw, but he’s a good pass rusher. You can stand him up at ROLB opposite Clay Matthews and put him down in nickel. He’s the best pure pass rusher available at this point. He’s got good size and range. He’s kind of like Kamerion Wimbley from Florida State.

26. Houston – OG Corrdy Glenn, Georgia. Comment: They have a lot invested in Matt Schaub and they have to keep him protected.

27. New England – OLB Shea McClellin, Boise State. Comment: He’s a smart rusher. If you close your eyes, he’s Mike Vrabel.

28. Denver, via trade with GB – C Peter Konz, Wisconsin. Comment: He can help them out at guard and center.

29. Baltimore – Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama. Comment: The Ravens are always going for defense and he can help them inside or outside.

30. San Francisco – Nick Perry, DE, USC. Comment: He would have been good for the Packers, but they can’t get over the chance to have Mercilus.

31. New England – OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford. Comment: They lost Matt Light and need help on the offensive line.

32. New York Giants – TE Coby Fleener, Stanford. Comment: They lost two TEs to knee injuries in the Super Bowl and with Eli Manning throwing to a guy like this, look out.

The NFL draft may still be a couple months away, but it’s never too early to start talking predictions and to offer a Mock Draft. This took a lot of time and I will hope all NFL fans will be able to relate to this mock draft. So without further adieu, it’s time to begin the 2012 NFL (mock) draft…With the 1st pick in the 2012 NFL (mock) draft, the Indianapolis Colts select…

# 1 Pick: Andrew Luck-QB-Stanford- Colts- This is the easiest prediction I will do in any mock draft I will ever do. Andrew Luck is predicted as being the next Peyton Manning. The thing is, though, Manning is still on the roster and the Colts may move on from him if they choose to go quarterback with the #1 pick. Just take this into consideration, Cam Newton, the rookie of the year, had a scouting rating of 93 when he was coming out of college…Luck has a 99.

#2 Pick: Robert Griffin III-QB-Baylor- Seahawks (Trade) – This is obviously being clever with the 2nd pick but it’s actually a very likely scenario. The Seahawks and Tarvaris Jackson is not a long term thing by any means. Robert Griffin III still has a rating of 95 which is still higher then Cam Newton. They may have to trade basically the whole draft to do this, but it’s for a franchise quarterback and nothing is more valuable then that.

#3 Pick: Matt Kalil-OT-USC- Vikings- Matt Kalil is rated as being the top prospect besides Andrew Luck in the draft. He could be even compared to as a Jake Long of the Miami Dolphins a few years back. I always have been a believer in o-line men as being the safest pick in the draft so I expect the Vikings to start rebuilding their o-line with this pick.

#4 Pick: Justin Blackmon-WR-Oklahoma State-Browns- Many mock drafts have Justin Blackmon going #2 to the St.Louis Rams but since I have them trading with the Seahawks, I believe the farthest Blackmon will fall will be to the fourth pick of the Cleveland Browns. Colt McCoy has potential, but he cannot live up to his expectations if he does not have any weapons around him. Adding Blackmon will bring an explosive side to the Browns’ offense that has not been seen in quite some time.

#5 Pick: Morris Claiborne-CB-LSU- Buccaneers- This would be a very smart pick for the Buccaneers. Buc’s corner, Ronde Barber, is getting up there in age and Aquib Talib has been having personal issues with the organization. Claiborne is rated as the top cornerback in the draft so rebuilding their defensive backs with a quality young cornerback could go a long way towards becoming a playoff team once again.

#6 Pick: Ryan Tannehill-QB-Texas A&M- Redskins- The Redskins don’t want a quarterback…they NEED a quarterback. Rex Grossman will never be a long term solution by any means at all. I can easily see the Redskins being the team instead of the Seahawks to trade up for the #2 pick and get RG3 but I just decided to go with my gut feeling. Regardless, if Luck and RG3 are picked before the Redskins have a chance at them, then I could see them going for Ryan Tannehill of Texas A&M. He is projected as probably being a late 1st round or 2nd round pick but, like we saw with the Vikings last year, teams will be willing to pick quarterbacks early if they are in desperate need for a franchise quarterback.

#7 Pick: Dre Kirkpatrick-CB-Alabama- Jaguars- Honestly the Jaguars have a lot of issues that need to be cleared up. So grabbing a quality cornerback in Dre Kirkpatrick would seem to be a smart move…quite frankly, any position drafted at this spot would seem to be a smart pick.

#8 Pick: Devon Still-DT-Penn St. – Panthers-The Panthers showed last year that they are a team on the rise. They did so with a very effective offense but not a very strong defense. Being ranked 26th in stopping the run would mean that adding the best defensive linemen in the draft would be a pick that would be another building piece towards a team that seems to be bound for the playoffs very soon.

#9 Pick: Trent Richardson-RB-Alabama- Dolphins- Trent Richardson is one of my favorite players in this draft. He has power, speed, and is a winner. Oh and he also won the Heisman 2 years ago. Last year was somewhat less productive then his Heisman year but still has a lot of potential in him towards in a NFL career. The Dolphins may have Reggie Bush but I just cannot see Bush being a full-time 25 carry a game running back. I can see Trent Richardson being able to this though, and that is why I think they will choose him with this pick.

#10 Pick: Quinton Coples-DE-North Carolina- Bills- The Bills defense has been in a state of disarray the past couple of years. They tried the 4-3 defense, then converted to a 3-4, and now are going back to a 4-3. It seems like they cannot make up their mind. Since they will once again switch to a 4-3 defense, they will need another pass rusher opposite of Shaun Merriman who is expected to play defensive end this season. Quinton Coples of North Carolina would be a safe pick at this position. He is 6’6 272 and has the ability to get pressure on the quarterback. If the Bills still cannot make up their mind about a defensive philosophy and decide to return to the 3-4 then Coples would still be a good fit because he has the ability to play the 5 technique and stop the run.

#11 Pick: Riley Rieff-OT-Iowa- Chiefs- The Chiefs could actually have been a playoff team last year but with so many injuries including Jamal Charles and their quarterbacks in Matt Cassel and Kyle Orton. A big reason for some of these injuries could be put on the offensive line. Although they were ranked #14 in total offensive line play, they were ranked 28th in average yards per rush. They were also ranked in the middle of the pack when it came to quarterback hits. Although they have Brandon Albert of the left side, they have no body on the right side so with the #11 pick in the 2012 mock draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Riley Rieff from Iowa.

#12 Pick: David DeCastro-OG-Stanford- Rams (Trade) – Since the Rams traded down in this draft, the Rams end up with the #12 pick in the draft instead of the #2 pick. At this position, I would think drafting David DeCastro of Stanford would be a solid pick. He is arguably the best offensive guard in the draft. When we look at the interior line of the Rams, we see them being age 31, 32, and 31. Their tackles are much younger so they can look elsewhere in the 1st round but with such an aging interior line, it would be logical to draft DeCastro at this pick.

#13 Pick: Jonathan Martin-OT-Stanford- Cardinals- The Cardinals really are not as bad as to what their record was last year. They have a solid defense and a good running back in Beanie Wells. Not to mention they also have arguably the best receiver in the game in Larry Fitzgerald. Not entirely sure if Kevin Kolb is their future so I do expect the Cardinals to draft a quarterback…but not in the 1st round. With having three quarterbacks already gone in the 1st round, it is pretty easy to say that their best bet is to wait a round or two and get a quarterback like Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weedon or Arizona State’s Brock Osweiler. I would think the position in need of a more immediate impact would be the offensive line, particularly the tackles. Drafting Jonathan Martin of Stanford would be a nice pick-up for a team that has been struggling in its protection.

#14 Pick: Alfonzo Dennard-CB-Nebraska- Cowboys- The Cowboys last year had some issues on defense. Sure they got the sacks from DeMarcus Ware but defending the pass as a defensive whole was an issue. They were ranked 23rd in defending the pass last season and are in need of another playmaking defensive back. This is why the Cowboys will draft Alfonzo Dennard of Nebraska. He is an all-around cornerback that seems to be NFL ready immediately. This would be a huge asset to a team in desperate need of another defensive back.

#15 Pick: Luke Kuechly-ILB-Boston College- Eagles- The so-called ‘dream team’ of last year was truly a disappointment. Their management went out and signed all the best free agents last year because they had the money to do so. Let alone, they did not really take into consideration their biggest need…linebackers. They just went with what they had and it really costed this team from making the playoffs. So, to me, this is a no brainer and a linebacker of some sort should be chosen with this pick. At pick #15, I would think the Eagles would take a good look at Luke Kuchely of Boston College who is considered to some as being the best interior linebacker in the draft. This would be one huge step to becoming a playoff team once again.

#16 Pick: Kendall Wright-WR-Baylor- Jets- Plaxico Burress did pretty well for the Jets last year. Unfortunately, it seems as if the Jets will decide to part ways with veteran receiver. This would leave the Jets with Santonio Holmes and…umm yea I don’t know. So if they want Mark Sanchez to upgrade his game instead of a major downgrade last year, they will need to add some sort of big time receiver now.

#17 Pick: Janoris Jenkins-CB-North Alabama- Bengals- Cornerback is not necessarily the most vital need for the Cincinnati Bengals. But as we look back on the Bengals history, we tend to see a trend. They will take chances of so-called ‘bad influential’ players like Pacman Jones, TO, and Ochocinco just to name a few. So Janoris Jenkins of North Alabama would be a perfect example of these types of players and I would not be surprised to see the Bengals picking this player well

#18 Pick: Courtney Upshaw-OLB-Alabama- Chargers- The Chargers defensively, struggled extremely on defense. There is not a real pin point problem to their defense but if I had to choose a player that I would think would fit perfectly into their scheme, it would be Courtney Upshaw of Alabama. Coming from a school built by defense, Upshaw made a name for himself as being one of the top defensive players in the country. He would make an immediate impact for the Chargers.

#19 Pick: Michael Floyd-WR-Notre Dame- Bears- Everybody who watches football would be able to tell you the biggest problem for the Bears for many years now. They have no receiving threat. Yet they for some reason keep trying to build from within but eventually you have to cave in and go and get a big time receiver. No, Roy Williams does not count. So getting Michael Floyd from Notre Dame with the 19th pick could become a steal in the draft. Floyd in many mock drafts is predicted as being the #2 receiver behind Justin Blackmon. He has the size and strength to be what the Bears always dreamed of with Roy Williams.

#20 Pick: Mark Barron-S-Alabama- Titans- the Titans defense last year was not all that bad. There is a chance this year, though, that they will lose Courtland Finnegan, Michael Griffin, and many other players on defense to free agency. If this is the case, the Titans will surely need to draft a defensive player early in order to try and at least preserve what was actually a pretty adequate Titans defense last year. Drafting Mark Barron out of Alabama would help replace Michael Griffin if they were to lose him to free agency. He has the ability to stop the run and has nice hands for the ball.

#21 Pick: Peter Konz-C-Wisconsin- Bengals-The o-line for the Bengals has been looking for an upgrade for quite some time now and adding Peter Konz out of Wisconsin would be a very smart decision.

#22 Pick: David Wilson-RB-Virginia Tech- Browns-This is where the #2 running back in the draft, David Wilson of Virginia Tech, comes off the board. Peyton Hillis had a very disappointing year for the Cleveland Browns and if anybody in that organization thinks Hillis is the long term answer at running back, I would be astonished.

#23 Pick: Stephon Gilmore-CB-South Carolina- Lions-If anybody watched a Lions game last year; anybody could tell you their big issue. Poor defensive back play. So to fix this, or at least help it, they will draft Stephon Gilmore out of South Carolina with their 1st pick in the draft. He may not be the total answer to their problems but he will definitely help provide much needed depth at the cornerback position.

#24 Pick: Cody Glenn-OT-Georgia- Steelers-The Steelers always seem to have a dissipated line by the end of the year due to injuries. Maybe drafting Cody Glenn of Georgia would be a perfect pick for them then. Glenn has the ability to move from tackle to guard when needed. His versatility could prove vital towards maintaining a solid o-line in Pittsburgh.

#25 Pick: Jerel Worthy-DT-Michigan State- Broncos-Last year’s transition to a 4-3 defense made the need for defensive tackles more vital. As of right now, they have two solid tackles in Kevin Vickers and Brodrick Bunkley but they do not have much depth beyond that. Also, Buckley is now an unrestricted free agent and probably will opt to sign elsewhere. That’s why they will draft Jerel Worthy with the 25th pick out of Michigan State.

#26 Pick: Mohamed Sanu-WR-Stanford- Texans- When you think of the Texans, you think of their high powered offensive attack. The thing is though, all they have as a receiver is Andre Johnson. Yes, Andre Johnson is the best receiver in the NFL still but he struggled with injuries last year and he actually is getting up their age. So adding Mohamed Sanu out of Stanford will be an insurance pick for a team that could need a receiver very soon.

#27 Pick: Michael Brockers-DT-LSU- Patriots- After giving up on Haynesworth, the Patriots really did not have spectacular defensive tackle play and they really suffered from this. Maybe adding Michael Brockers out of LSU, could improve their rush defense and start to build upon a defense who really was not existent last season.

#28 Pick: Andre Branch-DE-Clemson- Packers- The Packers need to get someone else besides Clay Matthews to be able to rush the quarterback. Although Matthews is great and all, he cannot do much when being double teamed on every snap. That’s why drafting Andre Branch from Clemson would be a perfect fit for the opposite side of Matthews. The guy was a sack machine in college and, although he struggled against the run, with his size and athleticism he would be able to continue to improve on his game and become better against the run.

#29 Pick: Dont’a Hightower-ILB-Alabama- Ravens- Yes, the defense of the Ravens is their strong suit but if they would like to continue with their consistent dominance of the defensive side then they will need to begin to build upon the next wave of Raven defensive players. One that is going to need a replacement very soon is Ray Lewis who is still playing his game at a high level but at age 36, the end has to be near. So drafting Dont’a Hightower out of Alabama would be a good pick if they would like to extend upon their defensive dominance.

#30 Pick: Alshon Jeffery-WR-South Carolina- 49ers- Last year the 49ers proved everybody wrong by playing football just like the days of Montana and Young. Well, maybe not all the way to that extent, but they still played very solid football for a team that was not expected to do much at all. Their defense is set but their offense is about average. Alex Smith played well by not turning the ball over and always giving his team a chance to win the game. But if they could add another receiving threat besides Vernon Davis then this offense could become just that much better and their team as a whole. Alshon Jeffery has a lot of potential out of South Carolina and could be one of those players who are a total bust or an immediate superstar. We will just have to wait and find out.

#31 Pick: Zach Brown-OLB-North Carolina- Patriots-The Pats defense last year was not good at all. They were so bad that they didn’t even know if they were playing a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense so they did a mixture of both throughout the season. It seems as if they will be going towards the 4-3 defense so adding a player who is actually projected to go higher in Zach Brown of North Carolina could help in their transition.

#32 Pick: Coby Fleener-TE-Stanford- Giants- Despite winning the superbowl, there is still some work to be done to the Giants if they would like to continue their winning ways. One thing they really missed last year was production from the tight end position. They lost Kevin Boss to the Oakland Raiders who was their big time threat for a while. Adding Coby Fleener out of Stanford, who is projected as being the top tight end in the draft, could be that that little piece to make the Giants become even more lethal next year.

So there we have it. The 1st round has come to a conclusion. I hope I gave some useful insight to each and every team out there. I realize that this is probably way too early to even predict the first five picks of the draft but this is a very sad part of the year for football fans. There’s no free agency, no games, and basically no news at all surrounding football. This is why I did the first full round of the draft now, so fans of all teams can at least get some hope as to what their team may try to accomplish in the coming off-season.

Look around the Internet and you will find mock draft after mock draft with first round projections for all 32 teams, but try to find one the takes a look at all seven rounds for individual teams and you will search for a long time – they are few and far between.

However, I did find one – produced by Fantasy Knuckleheads – that takes an interesting look at what the Packers’ brass may be considering come April.

Everyone’s in agreement that defense, defense, defense has got to be the rallying cry for the Packers this year. Not only does the team need an outside linebacker to complement Clay Matthews, but the team also is in need of a pass-rushing defensive end, a cornerback to groom to take the place of Charles Woodson, an offensive tackle to step in on the left side when Chad Clifton finally says goodbye, and even a running back that will bolster the still-uncertainty that is the Packers offensive backfield.

All of these holes in the Packers roster are addressed by the Fantasy Knuckelheads’ mock draft, with a couple of surprises thrown in.

As we suffer through the Pro Bowl this weekend, we have to admit that it’s time to start thinking the draft, even though it’s still three months away. Between now and then there will be plenty of speculation as the stock in players rise and fall through the player combine and up to draft day.

So, take a look at this mock … it’s an interesting one that will pique your interest. In addition, here is our first mock draft we put together earlier this week.

Jclombardi picks Packers’ first round choice in 2010 Draft.

It is time to select the Packers first-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft. As the Packers’ representative in the 2010 NFL Bloggers Mock Draft, I am making the first round choice for the Packers.

As the Packers lead blogger for lombardi.ave including guest postings at other major Packers blogs, I reviewed our 2010 draft needs and the probable choices in each round. Now, we begin with the first round of the 2010 Draft Day. Most 2010 mock drafts have the Packers picking an OT, OLB, CB, or RB in the first round. The draft is loaded with quality tackles, but the Packers have signed veterans tackles LT Clifton and RT Tauscher into the coming seasons. Second, when the Packers pick at 23, Rutgers OT Davis will not be available. Who is kidding whom? Third, while it makes sense that the Packers will address the quality tackle opportunity in the first three rounds of the draft, I suspect they will wait into the 2nd or 3rd round to pick one from the still available solid choices.

For the first round, the Packers will have a defensive focus. HC McCarthy and DC Capers see that the offseason evaluations point to the need for improvement by the current players, increasing pressure on the quarterback, and improving scheme adjustments as offseason plans for the Packers to achieve that defensive goal. If the Pack can solve their pass defense woes requiring more consistent pressure on the quarterback from both sides with another effective OLB pass rusher to complement OLB Matthews and a major upgrade to add need depth in the secondary with a blue-ribbon cornerback to go with CB Williams, they can advance deep into the 2010 NFL season playoffs.

Thus, our immediate defensive needs in the draft are another pass-rushing outside linebacker and quality depth in the secondary. Excluding the choices gone, the Pack will pick from several premier pass rushers in the draft including TCU’s DE/OLB Hughes, Michigan’s DE Graham, Clemson’s OLB Sapp, or South Florida’s DE Pierre-Paul.

With the 23nd pick in the 2010 Mock Draft Among Blogs, the Packers select:

•••Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU•••

Thus, while a tough decision, I choose the undersized versatile DE/OLB Hughes. Although he may look like a second round choice, he has great potential as a first round OLB choice. Although an undersized DE who got pushed around on running plays, he will fit as a speed pass specialist OLB in the 3-4 defense. At the combine, he ran a 4.69 seconds at the 40 yard dash and put up good numbers in bench pressing. He had a consistent season showing himself to be an athletic speed pass rusher with solid numbers (55 tackles and 11. 5 sacks). He has enough leverage and length to disengage from blocks and get the ball carrier who bounces outside. He hustles downfield and gets through trash inside to make tackles. Overall, he needs only to improve in rush defense to develop into an overall solid linebacker for the Packers.

I welcome readers’ reactions with alternative choices, reactions, and commentaries.
