What could be better than this mid-winter ball (game) we call the Super Bowl? What makes it so successful and why has it nearly become a national holiday that is close to rivaling the Christmas/New Year’s celebrations?

Well, there are answers to those questions, but those answers aren’t all glitz and glamour as you might suspect.

Cruising the Internet this morning looking for off-beat and interesting stories about the game and how it impacts our social, economic and political landscape, I came across a handful that point to some unusual angles from which to not only look at the phenomenon that is the Super Bowl, but how the game of football has shaped what we have become as a people.

Here’s some NFL-related stories that piqued my interest … and should do the same for you:

• Here’s a story about the crackdown on 307 sports-related domains that were seized by the feds;

• This is a story about the fact that taxpayers have been saddled with the Indianapolis stadium deal;

• This is a fabulous analysis about how corporate America and our society has been shaped by the top-down model as built and promulgated by the NFL;

• Ok, so while the commissioner thinks about expansion of the league, fans have to be concerned about the issue of HGH testing;

• And of course we couldn’t get through the day or the game without a look at some statistics – these showing just how self-indulgent and slobbish we have become; or

• Take a look at the seven most annoying halftime shows.

Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Brad Jones had a couple of nice hits Sunday against the Detroit Lions. One of them was his sack of Matthew Stafford – his first takedown of a quarterback since December 2009 when he got to then-Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck.

However, Jones’ best hit of the year was on a 15-year-old. Yes, he was the Packers player to took down the young man who was having the time of his life running across the Lambeau Field turf during Sunday’s 45-41 win by the Packers.

The young boy was one of three individuals arrested and removed from Lambeau Field Sunday, but his was the most visible, even though the network cameras, as is the policy for whatever reason, didn’t capture it.

However, a fan in the stands did capture the event and for the benefit of us all, posted it to YouTube.

But the real question I have is – who is this kid? Why did he do it?

I would love to interview him … if he is willing.

The clip is below. And as an added bonus, I’ve also included the video of the game when the fan in Cincinnati who ran on the field and stole the football from Brett Favre. Enjoy.
