Baer-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers have made the NFL Playoffs eight times since 2002 – yes, that’s eight of the last 10 seasons that the Packers have made the dance.

There are many reasons for this impressive statistic, but the most important reason is clear – consistency in the man under center.

The Packers played well at home over that decade with an impressive 65-15 record, but even more importantly, it’s been the Packers’ record on the road that has factored into the team’s success.

Russell S. Baxter (@BaxFootballGuru) tweeted the statistics you see below outlining all of the team road records for the NFC North. As you can see, the Packers with their 48-40 record on the road is 10 games better than the Bears, 16 better than the Vikings and 31 games better than the lowly Lions.

NFC North Road Records since ‘02: #Packers (48-40), #Bears (38-50), #Vikings (32-56), #Lions (17-71) #NFL

— Russell S. Baxter (@BaxFootballGuru) April 7, 2013

As is to be expected, the Packers won 10 or more games during all of those eight seasons when they made the playoffs. During this past decade, the Bears have had four seasons with 10 or more wins, the Vikings have had three and the Lions have recorded double digit wins just once.

The consistency in winning both on the road and at home can be attributed to consistency in quarterbacks leading the team. Since 2002, the Packers have had two quarterbacks, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers – with two games played by Matt Flynn (one of them when Rodgers was rested in the final game of 2011).

Jay Cutler is one of seven QBs who have played under center for the Bears in the past decade. Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

Compare that to the Bears and seven quarterbacks who led the team in yards passing over the past decade: Jim Miller, Kordell Stewart, Chad Hutchinson, Kyle Orton, Rex Grossman, Brian Griese and Jay Cutler.

The Lions have had five quarterbacks leading the team in passing yardage the past decade: Joey Harrington, Jon Kitna, Dan Orlovsky, Shaun Hill, and Matthew Stafford.

For the Vikings, their quarterback situation has been similar. The team has had six different quarterbacks who have led the team in passing: Daunte Culpepper, Brad Johnson, Tarvaris Jackson, Gus Frerotte, Brett Favre, and Christian Ponder.

Consistency on the road and at home is clearly tied to the consistency of the guys under center.

One wonders why the Packers are about to make Aaron Rodgers the highest paid player in the National Football League. Should anyone question the reason why, point them to this post. It tells the story, clearly and simply.

With $18.3 million under the salary cap, the Green Bay Packers rank sixth highest among the 32 National Football League teams in available money under the salary cap – that according to the list below that was put together by Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com.

The Cincinnati Bengals, with $28.9 million in their war chest, leads the league with most money available. The top five is rounded out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (28.8 million), Cleveland Browns ($28.7 million), Jacksonville Jaguars ($26.6 million), and Philadelphia Eagles ($26.3 million).

The Packers have the most money available among all NFC North teams, mostly because they haven’t played the free agency game – though they have dedicated money for the three-year deal the signed ILB Brad Jones to. They have also offered restricted free agent tenders to Sam Shields and Evan Dietrich-Smith.

The other NFC North teams and their available money are as follows:

Lions: $7.2 million.

Bears: $5.3 million.

Vikings: $5.1 million.

The Dallas Cowboys, the poster boys of bad cap management, is sitting just $51,000 under the cap after working with players to restructure their deals. The Carolina Panthers sit just above the Cowboys in a little better shape with $936,000 available. The Cowboys and Panthers are the only two teams under $1 million.

The Free Agency period is meeting the girl for the first time and becoming twitterpated; the pre- and post-Draft period are the dating days; and the first four games of the season are the marriage and honeymoon.

Now that free agency has brought out all the big spenders, including the Detroit Lions, the Minnesota Vikings and even to an extent, the Chicago Bears, it’s time to step back and ask the question that everyone wants to know: Have these three teams done enough to begin the process of catching up to the Green Bay Packers – the winner of the NFC North for the past two years straight.

Not only have the Packers won that division, they have dominated the division. With a 15-1 record these past two seasons – their only in-division loss being that to the Minnesota Vikings in the final game of the 2012 regular season – the Packers have risen significantly over their competition.

But considering what the other teams have done in free agency – Detroit bringing in Reggie Bush, the Vikings adding Greg Jennings and the Bears bringing in Martellus Bennett, among others – is the talent difference between all four teams gotten a bit smaller?

Possibly.

There are so many factors that play into the divisional rivalries. When teams match up in the schedule, injuries, individual matchups on the field, and most importantly, coaching.

So many times we’ve seen coaches get out-coached; so many times we’ve seen injuries deplete a team’s talent level; so many times we’ve seen teams that meet in December being polar opposites of the two teams that met in September because of some of the reasons listed above.

But because this league has become such a pass-happy entity, the bottom line seems to so often come down to one person: the quarterback.

And because of that, as long as the Packers have that guy by the name of Aaron Rodgers, the Packers have got to have the edge in the division. You can have all of the Reggie Bushes, all the Adrian Petersons and even all of the Matt Fortes … the impact on the game by that one quarterback has been so great that he has tipped the balance of power in the division to the Packers and will continue to do so.

So, in essence, all three of those teams not named the Packers have done a good job of improving their rosters through free agency and all of the teams, Packers included, will continue to improve their talent base through the draft. The division has tightened and is still one of the best in either conference.

But because the Packers don’t have Jay Cutler, Matthew Stafford and even more importantly – because they don’t have Christian Ponder – the Packers hold the edge in the division and will do so until the other three teams figure out a way to stop Rodgers.

That might be a while.

Here are the free agency signings by each of the teams in the NFC North Division:

Chicago Bears

signed TE Martellus Bennett to a four-year contract

The Packers didn’t extend tenders to tight end Tom Crabtree, Robert Francois or Frank Zombo, throwing those players to the market. However, reports indicated the Packers were trying to work out a deal to retain Francois.

But the Packers are the only team that didn’t factor into the free agency game. Rather, it appears the Packers are poised to commit to long-term contracts for Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews with the bulk of the funds remaining.

Percy Harvin
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

Elsewhere in the division, the Bears, who are said to be aggressively working the available free agent offensive linemen, have about $7 million to $10 million available in cap space; Detroit, which has been working the Reggie Bush lines all weekend, have $6 million available; and Minnesota, which pulled off the Percy Harvin trade yesterday and are poised in an attempt to either land receivers via free agency or the draft, have about $15 million available.

With less than two hours before the bell for the start of free agency rings, it looks as though it will be a quiet one for the Packers, while the Bears land at least one offensive lineman, the Lions try to shore up their running game, and the Vikings make a run at either Mike Wallace or Greg Jennings.

But let me throw this out there: Talk has been that the Packers haven’t given up on Jennings yet and that negotiations continue with his agent … suppose, just for the fun of it, that the Packers find a way to free up more money (releasing A.J. Hawk or restructuring his deal?), and get the go-ahead from both Rodgers and Matthews to waylay their extensions for another year so they can re-sign Jennings …

I know, you think I’m crazy. I think I’m crazy. But hey! This is the National Football League where just about any kind of crazy thing can occur.

Just some food for thought as we sit waiting for something to happen.

Stay tuned …

When it comes to quarterback play, the Green Bay Packers are fortunate. Not only have the Packers transitioned from one Hall of Fame quarterback to another, but they also possess the top passer in a division stocked with talented arms. The NFC North is one of only two divisions where every starting quarterback has led their team to the playoffs. In the modern NFL where passing and the ability to defend the pass are the strongest indicators of wins and losses, it’s important for Green Bay to keep tabs on the quarterbacks it sees most often.

With that in mind, let’s profile the resume and project the future for one of the NFC North’s other quarterbacks.

So without further adieu, the next NFC North quarterback under the microscope is …

Dec. 23, 2012; Glendale, AZ, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (6) throws during the first half against the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium. Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Jay Cutler

Team: Chicago Bears

Age: 29 (30 by week 1)

Experience: 93 games, all starts

Resume: In terms of regular reason starts, Jay Cutler is the most experienced quarterback in the NFC North. Cutler’s career is best viewed as the tale of two quarterbacks. In Denver, Cutler threw for more yards and touchdowns with each passing season, culminating in his 4,526 yards 25 touchdown year in 2008.

In Chicago, the reverse occurred, with Cutler sliding in each of those categories until last season.

Those numbers don’t tell the complete story, however.

Cutler’s improved throwing interceptions 4.3 percent of the time his first two seasons with the Bears to a more reasonable 2.8 percent. Unfortunately for Chicago, his touchdown percentage dropped from 5.1 percent to 4.3 percent over the same period. The latter figure is only marginally superior to Ponder’s 4 percent over the same period. Worse still, Cutler is the division’s least accurate passer the last two years, completing only 58.4 percent of his pass attempts during that time.

Jay Cutler will have to learn how to beat the Green Bay Packers to continue his career in Chicago.
Raymond T. Rivard photograph

However, it’s only fair to point out that Cutler has been saddled with easily the worst offensive coaching in the division. It’s for that very reason that Lovie Smith’s staff was sent packing after 2012 with noted offensive guru Marc Trestman taking the reins. Cutler is more talented than his aggregated Chicago statistics suggest. It’s easy to forget that in 2010, Cutler threw for a career high 5.3 touchdown percentage and his best touchdown-to-interception ratio (counting only seasons with 12 or more starts). When the conditions are favorable, that’s closer to the quarterback he really is.

Projection: Like Minnesota’s Christian Ponder, 2013 will be crucial for identifying Cutler’s future. When Cutler had quality offensive coaches, he was a 4,500-yard-plus passer with reasonable accuracy.

That hasn’t been the case in Chicago, but with Trestman now in charge that figures to change. With Brandon Marshall and a now healthy Alshon Jeffery manning the starting receiver spots, Matt Forte still possessing great hands out of the backfield, and an offensive line that can only improve, Cutler should have the tools necessary to resurrect his career.

Dec 16, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (6) makes a pass against the Green Bay Packers during the second quarter at Soldier Field. Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

The only thing standing in Cutler’s way is Bears GM Phil Emery. Emery was not part of the regime that traded for Cutler. With only one year left on Cutler’s contract and a new head coach in town, Emery may use this offseason to find his quarterback. If this happens, Cutler’s 2013 season will become an open audition.

That doesn’t mean Cutler can’t succeed. In 2004, second year Chargers GM A.J. Smith drafted Philip Rivers to be the long-term replacement for Drew Brees, the inconsistent incumbent drafted by the previous administration. The added pressure pushed Brees to produce the best season he’d ever have as a Charger. While Cutler is older than Brees was then, it’s reasonable to expect Cutler to perform well even in this scenario.

When it comes to quarterback play, especially in the NFC North, the Green Bay Packers are fortunate.

With that in mind, we here at lombardiave.com kick off this three-part series by profiling the resume and projecting the future for one of the NFC North’s other quarterbacks.

So without further adieu, the first NFC North quarterback under the microscope is…

Dec 30, 2012; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder (7) throws a pass during the first quarter against the Green Bay Packers at the Metrodome. Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Christian Ponder

Team: Minnesota Vikings

Age: 25

Experience: 27 games, 26 starts

Resume: Having just turned 25, Christian Ponder is the youngest and least experienced starting quarterback in the NFC North. However, Ponder started at Florida State University for three seasons, which may give us a clearer idea of the type of player he is. What’s immediately apparent when examining Ponder’s college career is just how conservative he plays. Not once in his three years starting at Florida State did Ponder throw more interceptions than touchdowns. Also, with 2009 being the lone exception, Ponder never averaged more than 6.8 yards per attempt.

Ponder’s professional career has largely reflected this. In two years in Minnesota, Ponder has averaged 6.2 yards per pass attempt. That figure falls about one yard per pass behind Matthew Stafford and Jay Cutler, and nearly two yards behind division leader Aaron Rodgers. More troubling for Ponder is the scarcity of scoring. Ponder’s throws only end in a touchdown 4 percent of the time, a division worst. Over that same period, Rodgers’ passes produced touchdowns at an 8 percent clip. While each quarterback is at wildly different stages of the development process, they’re competing for the same goals in the same division at the same time, thus necessitating the comparison. Needless to say, Ponder has a lot of ground to cover.

Projection: After analyzing Ponder’s conservative Florida State career as well as his first two campaigns in Minnesota, one has to wonder: Will Ponder ever become more of a risk taker, and does he need to for the Vikings to contend for a championship? It seems pretty safe to say that the answer to the first question is doubtful. While he will surely cut down on mistakes and take advantage of defensive errors more often as he matures, Ponder has never at any point displayed the temperament necessary to become a truly elite passer. Even if the Vikings improve at the wide receiver position, Ponder will still default to the short game more often than not. Big passing plays will have to come after the catch, which means the Vikings would be well advised to meet Percy Harvin’s contract demands.

Dec 2, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (79) tackles Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder (7) during the game at Lambeau Field. The Packers defeated the Vikings 23-14. Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The answer to the second part of the question is more difficult. Minnesota has constructed its offense around Adrian Peterson and the running game. While Peterson performs at his current historic levels, it’s not necessary for Ponder to become an air raid quarterback. He does need to increase his touchdown efficiency, but probably not by all that much.

Where the Vikings will run into trouble is when Peterson’s production falls off. Only two years away from 30, and with 1,754 carries and a torn ACL already endured, Peterson won’t be the NFL’s pre-eminent running back for that much longer.

When the time comes, Ponder doesn’t project to cover enough of the difference to keep Minnesota’s offense at a Super Bowl contending level. For that forecast to change, Ponder has to make vast improvements this season. Few quarterbacks dramatically change their production after their third year starting.

If it doesn’t happen this year for Ponder, it’s pretty safe to write him off as anything more than a caretaker.

I’m not sure if you’ve had the opportunity to check out the list of players across the NFL who will soon be to negotiating with any other team in the league as a part of Free Agency, but you should – and especially take a glance at the NFC North – in particular the Chicago Bears.

What you will see is an ocean of players who will be free to either re-sign with their team (before March 12) or those who will be building up their frequent flyer miles. The majority of them will most likely be looking to buy new homes or rent new apartments in cities across the league.

It’s always an exciting time of year – in fact, for me, the most exciting. We watch as Ted Thompson refuses to participate while others across the league open the checkbooks and watch the dollars fly out. What’s the best solution for building a team? Ask Thompson and he’ll tell you that it’s the draft and develop method that, while the slowest, is the most effective. Ask Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and he might tell you the opposite – but history tells us it might be a combination of the two.

Anyway, I digress – the following is a list of all NFC North teams and the free agents who, for the most part, will be testing the market waters within the week:

Over the past six years I have had the honor and privilege to be allowed to attend four home Green Bay Packers games as an on-field photographer and have taken literally thousands of photographs of the guys in Green and Gold.

Some have been pretty good, some not so good, but in honor of the Academy Awards which are hitting the red carpet as I write this, I have combed through some of the best photographs that I have been fortunate to take. Some photos take themselves, some the photographer has to work for – in other words, you’ve got to anticipate and position oneself for the play you know is coming your way.

I’ve shot at both warm September games and very cold December games at Lambeau Field, but every outing presents its own challenges and rewards. I’ve watched Aaron Rodgers throw easy touchdowns, I’ve seen Charles Woodson intercept and return them for touchdowns, but my most memorable photograph was the shot I took of Donald Driver during his catch and run for a touchdown against the 49ers in 2010. He described it himself as the best play of his career and to think that I caught the entire series from the moment he caught the ball to his dive into the end zone with three defensive back draped all over him gives me goose bumps every time I think of it.

But without boring you any further, here are some of my best pictures over the years:

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is never one to mince words and when he talks, people listen – such was the case this past week when he stated on his ESPN Radio show that it’s time former quarterback Brett Favre, the Packers organization and their fans should forgive and move on.

Last week, Rodgers and Favre appeared together on stage at the NFL Honors program to announce the comeback player of the year award and it was Rodgers who was involved in helping make it happen.

Aaron Rodgers considers himself the face of the Packers franchise.
Raymond T. Rivard photograph

“As the face of the franchise now,” Rodgers said, “[it's] a role that I take very seriously. I have the responsibility and enjoy having the opportunity to represent my team. I think it’s important to realize that it is probably time to move forward.”

That’s something that four years ago seemed like decades off. Favre retired from the Packers after the 2007 season and the Packers wasted no time in handing the keys to the Cadillac to Rodgers. The Packers had moved on. Then Favre wanted to come back and the Packers told him to get lost. They traded him to the New York Jets where he played for one season, got hurt, and retired again … but only temporarily.

Favre announced another comeback … this time with the hated Minnesota Vikings. It was clear that Favre wanted to stick it to his old team and in 2009, that’s what he did. Not only did Favre lead the Vikings to a North Division title, but he led them to two wins over Rodgers and the Packers. Packers fans were incensed, but were overjoyed when Favre threw a game-deciding interception in the NFC Championship – a game where Favre was brutalized by the New Orleans Saints and their bounty-driven defense.

Brett Favre was emotional after his final game at Lambeau – a loss to the Packers in 2010.
Raymond T. Rivard photograph

Many felt that had the Viking and Favre won that game they would have easily beaten the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl. But we’ll never know.

What was even more satisfying for Packers fans was that the Packers and Rodgers got revenge in big ways in 2010. Not only did the Packers beat the Vikings and Favre twice that year, but the Packers went on to win Super Bowl XLV and Rodgers earned a place in the pantheon of Packers quarterbacks … helping fans to completely forget Favre.

Well, maybe not completely.

There are many (myself included) who still love Brett Favre – we just don’t appreciate what he did to the Packers at the end of his career.

Like Rodgers, I count myself among those who fee that the Packers and Favre must forget about the indiscretions and honor what Favre did for and meant to the franchise. He was a Packer and always will be a Packer. It’s time to recognize that, give Favre his day and Lambeau Field and retire his #4.

Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers watch the action at training camp back in 2007.
Raymond T. Rivard photograph

What many didn’t know about their appearance together on stage is that Favre and Rodgers spent a great deal of time talking about how they would present themselves and though there were portions that seemed “awkward,” that was the joke they were attempting to portray … and they did it well.

“That was the joke,” Rodgers said, who said the plan was for the pair to start hugging but then back away and say, “Too soon?” That didn’t work out quite that way – but it was a good plan.

“Brett is two years removed from the game. He’s going to obviously be in the Packers Hall of Fame. He’ll get his number retired, and he’ll be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the next few years. It’s important, I think, to make sure that he’s recognized for all the accomplishments that he’s achieved in our organization especially. He’s still very dear to many of our fans for the things that he’s done for the Packers on the field. You can never take that away.

“As the face of the franchise, I felt like it was important that I took a leadership role in that. Not that one was needed now, but I thought it was good timing to just let the fans know, let Brett know, let’s move forward. Let’s heal things up and let’s move forward.”

Brett Favre is a Packer and always will be a Packer.
Raymond T. Rivard photograph

I think Rodgers is playing a great middle man here. He is the face of the franchise (sorry, Donald Driver), and his legacy will be one that carry on for decades … as will Favre’s … They join Bart Starr as Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks who have had a tremendous amount of success in helping the franchise continue to be the standard bearer for the entire league.

Having Brett Favre back into the Packers family will go a long way in helping the whole of Packers Nation heal.

It’s time. I only hope the Packers brass feel the same.

Enough ‘rah-rah’, ‘they are better than that’, ‘ugly wins are still wins’ blather … the fact is that the Packers played one (1) complete game in the 2012 season. They beat the teams that they should have beaten (Indy the notable exception) based on talent alone, with the lone exception being at the Texans where the Packers played (IMO) their only complete game of the year. Much like the 2011 season, winning can hide deficiencies which can come back with a vengeance in the playoffs.

Setting aside the fact that the Packers gave up 579 yards (sic) of total offense to the 49ers, the Packers failed at almost all of their signature “critical points.” The most important of those is the ‘double-up’ at the half, Rodgers even talked about it in the run up to the SF game. A perfect opportunity was squandered on third and 8 when Kaepernick was able to scramble for a first down just after the two-minute warning.

What is truly infuriating is that the defense played like they didn’t know Colin Kaepernick would be a run threat. In fact, the scheme didn’t even seem to take that into account at all. Let’s see: LBs crashing down on the read option? Check. Total disregard for outside containment on the QB? Check. I thought those would have been emphasized in film study in the run-up to last weekend, but that game is over along with the 2012 season.

Living in the Philadelphia area, I am no stranger to disappointment, not for myself but for many friends. The depth of the disappointment is dependent on expectations and while those have been low around here lately, for a Packers fan things are different. MVP QBs don’t grow on trees, and the Packers have one. Not just a franchise QB, an MVP. There are exactly three of those in the NFL, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Rodgers. And while Rodgers is the youngest, they seem to be piddling away opportunities to win championships. No one can expect to top Tom Brady’s run of 3 out of 4 Super Bowls to start his run, but if Aaron Rodgers ends up like Peyton Manning (4 MVPs, 1 Super Bowl) it won’t be good enough.

Add to the mix that Roethlisberger and the other Manning have two Super Bowls each and Rodgers’ ‘legacy’ will negligible outside of Wisconsin without at least one more Super Bowl win.

The Packers stumbled through the 2012 season, and while they showed flashes of a great team, I never saw dominance outside of the Houston game (the meaningless game against the Titans doesn’t count). The regular season finale in Minneapolis should have opened my eyes; when they needed to, the defense couldn’t step up their game.

Another offseason has come too soon.

The risk of failure is always at hand. But there is that little voice that says just keep pushing forward, this is the one that drowns out the other voice, the one that fears failure. You’re determined and optimistic, confident that your talent and maybe a little luck will enable you to come out on top.

Saturday night fears of failure were realized as the Packers got stomped by the 49ers in the NFC Divisional Playoff game. The opportunities that got missed and the things that got swept under the rug over the course of the 16 game NFL season were revealed for everyone to see. The Packers found out that they were not as talented as they thought and like so many times this season they were not very lucky.

The Packers are a better team than they demonstrated Saturday evening. But to consider them one of the elite teams in the NFL is no longer possible. The 49ers on Saturday were simply bigger, faster, stronger and smarter. San Francisco is the team to beat. But they were not the only team to expose the Packers’ weaknesses throughout the course of the season.

Green Bay was not the dominating team that they were during the 2011 regular season. They played several close games and lost a number of games that they should have won. At times they faltered because they seemed to approach games like they just simply needed to show up to win. They also discovered that Aaron Rodgers and his wide receiver arsenal was not all that was needed to be successful.

Their prolific passing attack, although formidable, was not as dictating as it was the year previous. Despite injuries to Greg Jennings and Cedric Benson early on they still had a number of playmakers. What they lacked was pass protection on offense and speed, mean and bulk on defense.

It is clear now that General Manager Ted Thompson missed opportunities to upgrade the offensive line. Despite all their playmakers Aaron Rodgers was continually under duress and often unable to get the ball into the able hands of Cobb, Finley, Nelson, Jennings, and so on. Thompson also missed the opportunity to bring speed, mean and bulk to the defense. Granted, injuries took a toll on the defense. But the Packers can no longer expect to win by simply outscoring their opponents. They need a defense that can take their opponent out of the game.

Green Bay is not a media market like say New York where the smallest of issues become big issues faster than an ill-timed Jermichael Finley tweet. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t distractions inside the Packers locker room. The Packers did try to sweep a few things under the rug.

The biggest being how to handle Donald Driver. Coach McCarthy said a number of times that Driver was a class guy and handled his diminished playing time like a professional. Donald Driver playing or not playing on Saturday had no real consequence on the outcome of the game. But activating him for the NFC Divisional Playoff game simply because it could be his last NFL game or last game as a Packer has got to have some detrimental effects on the psyche of the team. Kind of comes across as a losing mentality. Let’s hope that they find the right way to address Charles Woodson as he enters the twilight of his career.

The other distraction was Greg Jennings. He wasn’t obnoxious in his complaints about his contract. But he was repetitive in his remarks. He came across as putting his own interests in front of the team. He especially did this at the end of the season and into playoffs. It was off putting to fans and one would guess more than one of his teammates were rubbed the wrong way by his remarks.

An NFL team as they make their way through a season in some regards can be a reflection of day-to-day life. No one sets out to fail necessarily. The team evaluates their resources and then puts together a plan to succeed. They figure, well the situation may not be perfect but with some hard work and some luck things just might go their way. Calculated guesses are made that sometimes work. When they do heroes are born. When they don’t, goats are brought to life instead.

To be honest, it will probably be in a negative light; there will be missed FGs and the team that misses the least FGs will win the game Saturday night. The real difference could be that the 49ers brought in a challenger and the Packers didn’t. Will that make a difference? That is yet to be seen. Mike McCarthy’s approach has been to profess public confidence in Mason Crosby, an average kicker, while the 49ers brought in Billy Cundiff (an NFL castoff) to challenge Akers, one of the (historically) best kickers in the NFL.

I know it’s a tired line and it’s not a positive note, but kicker can win for you or they can lose for you. Crosby has been horrible from 40+ and worse than that from 50+. He’s made 6 in a row and 8/9, but you can call me a skeptic until he kicks a second 40+ FG in the 49ers game. In my opinion the biggest part of the kicking game is managing momentum. When a drive stalls around the 35, it is great to have a kicker who can make a 52 yarder, but when the kicker’s confidence is down the right move is to punt or go for it on 4th down. I reference the Giants game, where a missed 55yd FG changed the momentum at MetLife stadium.

After trading TDs in opening drives, the Packers held the Giants for a 3 and out and (thanks to a nice 15 yd return by Cobb), started at their own 46 yd line. At that point, the Packers had a chance to silence the crowd and seize an advantage. An end around by Cobb gained 12 and put the Pack in Giants territory with a 1st down. The drive stalled and Mason Crosby came on and missed a 55 yd FG. Eli Manning and the Giants used the short field and scored a TD, energized the crowd and the rout was on. It ended as the worst loss for the Packers in years.

The crowd matters and the Packers need to play to quiet the crowd early, whether it be on offense or defense. MM almost always defers when winning the toss, so I expect the same this week. A defensive stop will go a long way, but absent an ensuing TD drive, I’d rather have Tim Masthay kicking from the 35 than Mason Crosby.

A perfect solution would be for the Packers to get TDs on their first three possessions and stifle the 49ers offense, but that is a pipedream. Crosby’s leg may be what makes the difference between the Packers hosting the Seahawks at Lambeau and watching the NFC Championship from the couch.

In the week following the firing of head coach Lovie Smith, many jokes and laughs have come at the expense of the Chicago Bears and their coaching search.

During that time, Bears General Manager Phil Emery has interviewed at least 10 (and probably more) candidates ranging from special teams coordinators to Canadian Football League coaches while avoiding most of the popular names such as Chip Kelly and John Gruden. It seems like there will be many more interviews before the Emery even approaches any candidate for a second sit down.

Laugh now, but regret it later. This is exactly what a smart organization does.

Unless a team is trying to nail down a big fish – an approach that isn’t fail-safe by any means – there is no incentive to rush a decision. Nor is there any good reason not to interview as many viable candidates as possible. It wasn’t that long ago that the Green Bay Packers were chastised for doing exactly what the Bears are doing now.

Jan 5, 2013; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy on the sidelines in the third quarter of the NFC Wild Card playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Following the 2005 season, Packers general manager Ted Thompson embarked on a coaching search which involved holdover defensive coordinator Jim Bates, Maurice Carthon, Brad Childress, Ron Rivera, Wade Phillips, Sean Payton, and an out of left field candidate, Mike McCarthy.

Everyone knows who ended up with the job, and while nearly all those names have been head coaches at some point, all but perhaps Payton have failed to accomplish as much as McCarthy. McCarthy leads all the candidates the Packers considered in wins and winning percentage in the regular season and the playoffs. He, along with Payton, are the only head coaches in the group to win a Super Bowl. McCarthy has a shot at a second ring this year.

Now back to the Bears. By expanding their search outside of the expected candidates, they’ve given themselves a greater view of what is really available on the coaching market. Consequently, they may come to prefer a candidate that few fans even knew about just weeks earlier. These surprise hires may not rally a fan base, but winning with the right coach does, and it definitely outshines the afterglow of a popular but ultimately ill-advised hire.

The Bears have looked primarily at offensive coordinators, which makes sense given their woes on that side of the ball in recent years. In addition to looking at an array of candidates, Emery has been smart to also consider coaches from teams that don’t have great records. Joe DeCamillis of the Dallas Cowboys (8-8), Mike Sullivan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9), and Pete Carmichael Jr. of the New Orleans Saints (7-9) have all interviewed with the Bears this past week.

This provides another parallel to McCarthy’s hiring. McCarthy had just completed his first season as the offensive coordinator of the 4-12 San Francisco 49ers when he interviewed with Green Bay. That hire clearly worked out, and proves to show how team success is not always emblematic of the quality of assistant coaches.

We won’t know who the Bears hire for several days, and we certainly won’t know how that hire works out for several years, but all indications suggest this will be a smart hire.

A hire that should make Packers fans worry, not laugh.

Green Bay Packers fans know a thing about numbers, especially the numbers that lead to wins.

2,549 days.

Let that number sink in … if you subtract those days from Dec. 30, 2012, it takes you back to Jan. 7, 2006.

That’s the last time the Washington Redskins have made an NFC Playoff appearance. Think about it, Packers fans … and while you’re at it, count your blessings.

Since 2006, the Packers have had five appearances: 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012. With appearances in four of the past five years, it’s become an expectation. The Packers have appeared in the Playoffs in eight of the past 10 years and have won a Super Bowl over the past decade.

In fact, the team’s success is at an historic level. Clearly, the Packers continue to be one of the most successful franchises in league history and continue to perform year-in and year-out.

Adrian Peterson carries the ball during the third quarter against the Green Bay Packers at the Metrodome.
Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Consider the Redskins’ failures. And consider that the Minnesota Vikings are one of several teams that have never won a Super Bowl.

So, as you fume over Sunday’s last-second loss to the Vikings, consider that this is just a blip on the screen of success. The Packers were playing for a week off today. The Vikings were playing for their Playoff lives and to get their Cyborg-like running back Adrian Peterson enough yards to claim a long-standing NFL rushing record.

With their last-second win, the Vikings earned a trip to the post-season, but their efforts fell nine yards short in helping Peterson gain the record – a small victory for the Packers.

But what we saw Sunday was a game for the ages on both sides of the ball. While Peterson was piling up yards for the Vikings, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was leading the Packers down the field for score after score, overcoming a 13-point deficit – twice – to finally tie the game with just more than two minutes remaining in the game.

Aaron Rodgers
Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Though the Vikings won the game, their prize was another trip to Green Bay next Saturday night to take on the Packers in their house. Will they have enough to beat the Packers twice in a single season and do it with six days rest? We’ll see.

If they are to do that, they will need to duplicate the effort that gave Peterson nearly 200 yards once again.

Here’s what Aaron Rodgers said after the game about the rematch and heading back home: ”We’re in the playoffs now and you play who you are seeded against. The road got a little tougher having to play on opening weekend, but we’ve got a home game and that’s why you win the division. We get to go back home and the game will be different. They won’t have home crowd advantage and hopefully that will make a difference.”

One thing is for certain – these are historic times when it comes to the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. The great thing is they get to do it once more next week in Green Bay, in prime time.

So, it’s time to get over the loss, Packers fans. It’s time for the Packers to look ahead at ways to stop Peterson. It’s time for Aaron Rodgers to bring his best effort once again.

Here’s what Coach Mike McCarthy had to say about his talk with the team following the game:

“The root of it was, we had an opportunity here to take care of business and have the bye week and that opportunity is passed. The playoffs have started for us now. It’s official. We got a taste of the environment, what it’s going to be like on the road. Playoff football’s different. It is every year. Today’s opportunity is something we can apply to this upcoming week.”

And one thing is for certain. We won’t have to wait 2,549 days to enjoy it all once again.

Every game during the 16-game National Football League season are big, but when the final game between the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings comes down to a matchup between division rivals with playoff implications – well, it doesn’t get much bigger.

The Packers invade the Mall of American Field to take on the Vikings in a 3:25 p.m. start. Here’s how the staffers here at Lombardiave.com see today’s game – but before reading on, take the poll:

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Jason Hirschhorn: As students of history, every so often we’re presented with grand parallels between the current day and years past. This week’s Packers-Vikings game is one such parallel.

In the final week of the 2002 regular season, the Green Bay Packers played an injury-riddled New York Jets with a chance to secure a first round bye. The Jets, 8-7 entered the game, faced a win-and-in scenario. Having won their last four games and 12 overall, it was presumed that mighty Green Bay would steamroll New York.

That’s not exactly what happened.

The Jets kept things close through the first half and exploded in the second, leaving a bewildered Packers team in its wake. That loss transformed the Packers from the top seed into the mere also-ran division winner. Adding further insult, the team would go on to lose the first home game at Lambeau Field to Michael Vick and the upstart Falcons.

This certainly does not guarantee the Vikings will defeat the Packers. It simply demonstrates how even when a team as hot as the Packers has a chance to secure a major playoff advantage, nothing is guaranteed. The Vikings can win this Sunday, and even a fully prepared Packers team may not be able to bring home a win. Such is the norm in the NFL. With much reluctance, I’ll predict the Vikings pull it off.

Vikings 28 – Packers 27

Ray Rivard: This is a must win for the Packers and a gotta win for the Vikings. The Packers are already in the tournament, the Vikings have to win to get in. Both teams have major incentive, the game is indoors and it’s a game that was moved from its noon start to the late start for good reason – it should be a great game.

Though the Vikings are playing on their home turf, come in with great momentum and have a running back looking to break the league rushing record against a hated rival, it won’t happen. If there’s one team in the league that can play as well on turf as well as they can in the elements it’s the Aaron Rodgers-led Packers. Rodgers is lights out in domes and he’ll feel right at home in the Mall of America. I see Rodgers showing why he’s the reigning NFL MVP and a candidate for that same title yet again.

Bolstered by revitalized offensive and defensive lines, the Packers will win the game in the trenches and on special teams. The Packers will demonstrate why they have swept division rivals two years straight and will show why they are one of the favorites to take it all the way to the Super Bowl.

The Viking keep it close in the second half, but using their own game against them, the Packers control the clock with a solid running attack in the second half.

Packers 28 – Vikings 20

Bill Walton: The Packers will be playing for a first round bye in the playoffs when they take on Minnesota this Sunday. I’m not entirely convinced that the bye is the best thing for them. The momentum the team has today might be lost if they end up with a week off before they start the playoffs. There are several other playoff implications associated with the game. If the Packers do lose, they’ll still be in the playoffs due to having won the NFC North. However, potential playoff berths for Minnesota and Chicago as well as the seeding for San Francicso are all tied to the outcome of Packers-Vikings and other results.

With Clay Matthews, Mike Neal, and probably Jordy Nelson back for the game the Packers will be as healthy as they have been since week six this season. Randall “Cobbernicus” Cobb and his sore ankle and enormou brain will be a game time decision. The obvious defensive priority is to control Adrian Peterson as much as possible. It will take a team commitment to tackle aggressively in order to even come close. Peterson had the majority of his yards in the first game this year after initial contact. However, I think it really comes down to red zone defense. If Peterson has a good day running only between the 30s the Vikings won’t win the game.

Wife Deneen, looking forward to watching Claymaker do his “Magic Mike” (Magic Clay?) sack dance, picks this one 23-17 Packers. Son John, who along with his father will cover his eyes when Matthews dances, sees the Packers winning big with a 42-28 outcome. I think it will be more like 33-14 Packers. Go Pack GO!

Tim Thomas: The Packers have a big showdown with the Minnesota Vikings Sunday as Green Bay can win and get a valuable first round bye to allow Charles Woodson, Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson, and other injured Packers to get fully healthy.

The Packers will need to do a better job of slowing down Adrian Peterson as he dominated the Packers earlier this season. I expect the Green Bay secondary to force tons of turnovers as the nerves of trying to get into the playoffs will get to Christian Ponder. Ponder will also have to worry about Clay Matthews as Matt Kalil will have his hands full with the Packers star linebacker.

For Rodgers, these are the types of games he is made for as I expect Rodgers to have some big passes to James Jones while Greg Jennings could also have a very strong game. Adrian Peterson will have a big game, rookie kicker Blair Walsh will makes some big field goals and keep Minnesota in it but the Packers will have plenty of offense to win and lock up a first round bye.

Defensively, the Vikings shut down Houston on the road last week. That was impressive, even considering Houston’s inflated status in the mainstream sports media, but I don’t expect the same this week. The Packers are peaking at the right time (both offensively and defensively) and I don’t expect a hiccup at this stage in the season.

PACKERS 31 – Vikings 13

Patrick Hughes: In my eyes this game is every bit as important for the Packers as a playoff elimination contest. A win provides the spoils of a bye and a home game. But more important if the Packers play well on both sides of the ball it propels them into the playoffs with some forward momentum.

It is an opportunity for guys who have been sidelined, such as Nelson and Jennings, the opportunity to sync up with Aaron Rodgers. A strong performance by Finley would give him confidence, and believe it or not he needs some. The running game can continue to assert its presence and demand respect. Can you imagine what holding Adrian Peterson to a sub-100 yard rushing game would do for the psyche of the Packers’ defense?

The Vikings, on the other hand, are not about to roll over. You can bet the Vikes are hungry for a playoff berth. Not to mention Adrian Peterson has Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record in his sights. You can take it to the bank that he is going to be coming like a freight train on every single handoff. And behind that train is going to be the roar of the crowd at the Metrodome or whatever they are calling that Glad Bag these days.

This one is going to be dogfight from start to finish. The Packers cannot give the Vikings anything, no turnovers. Conversely the Packers defense needs to force Vikings QB into giving the ball to the Green and Gold. I have a hunch Mike Neal, CMIII and Casey Hayward will all have a big game. On offense look for the three-headed monster running attack to continue to plow forward. I am also thinking Finley, Jennings and Nelson connect with Rodgers for big plays.

The annual debate over whether to rest starters or go all out is in full swing again this season just like every other season. The situations are never identical, but whether a team decides to play to win or live to fight another day, they will forever be second guessed if the playoffs are a letdown.

Last season, the Packers had “nothing to play for” in week 17. Aaron Rodgers (along with his 45 TDs) was on the bench along with other key players. We all know how that worked out in the end.

I think, in hindsight, the only Packer who truly benefitted from that game was Matt Flynn!

This year is a very different scenario in that both the Packers and the Vikings have “something to play for.” The Vikings are in the playoffs with a win and, very likely, out with a loss.

The Packers can lock up the #2 seed and a coveted Bye. Obviously, a playoff berth is big, but just how big is a bye these days and should the Packers go all out to secure the bye?

As you may or may not know, since 2002, 5 out of 10 SBs (including 5 of the last 7) were won by teams that did not have a first round bye. Three of those five teams were Wildcard teams that never even played a home game in the playoffs! Of course WINNING the SB is the goal, but in order to have a chance to win the SB, you have to make it to the SB, and that is much more likely if you earn a first round bye.

Since 2002, #1 or #2 seeds represented their respective conference in the big game 14 out of 20 times. But, amazingly, in the last 5 years the NFC has had just one #1 seed and ZERO #2 seeds make it to the Super Bowl and only once in that span did both top seeds win after the bye (#1 seeds were just 1-4!).

AFC teams have done better, managing to get one of their top seeds to the Super Bowl every year for the past 5, but they are 1-4 in that span in the Super Bowl. The recent history in the NFC notwithstanding, a team with a bye has much better odds of making it to the Big Easy this year.

What it all boils down to is that the Packers need to treat this like a playoff game, bring their ‘A’ game and get a victory. If for no other reason than to prevent it from becoming one next week at Lambeau, but securing a bye will be a bonus!

WITH A PACKERS WIN: With a win, of course, the Packers get the bye as the #2 seed. From the Packers’ (and the NFLs) standpoint, all of the hullabaloo about the “inaccurate reception” will be over. The NFL and the replacement refs will be off the hook. If the Bears manage to win in Detroit, they will be the #6 seed. If they lose, they would open the door for the Giants to limp in with a win against the hapless Eagles coupled with a Cowboys win. To be honest, I’d rather see the Bears in the playoffs than the Giants. The Packers have the Bears number, but the Giants have the Packers number. I don’t see the magic happening for the Giants this year, but they’ve been written off before and made great runs.

WITH A VIKINGS WIN: The Vikings are in as the #6 seed and the Packers will play them at Lambeau unless both SF and SEA lose. One thing I hate, as a Packer fan, is to have to play another division game in the playoffs! The rivalries in the NFC North are legendary and the Vikings have had some success at Lambeau in the playoffs in the recent past, so I’d rather eliminate the Vikes at the earliest opportunity. Add to that, a trip to SF or SEA for the divisional round will make it an even tougher road.

The best scenario for the Packers is eliminating the Vikings and securing a bye. Along with that, I’d like to see the Cowboys knock off the Redskins; RGIII isn’t someone I’d like to see in the playoffs.

Prediction:

If the Packers come out like this is a playoff game, it shouldn’t be a contest. Granted, Adrian Peterson racked up 210 yards at Lambeau, but a big chunk of that came on his 82 yd TD run in the 1st half. Even with that, the Packers still put up a W. Christian Ponder stinks on ice and without Percy Harvin, he stinks even more than that. The Packers won’t completely shut down AP, but they certainly have nothing to fear from the Vikings passing attack.

Defensively, the Vikings shut down Houston on the road last week. That was impressive, even considering Houston’s inflated status in the main stream sports media. I don’t expect the same this week. The Packers are peaking at the right time (both offensively and defensively) and I don’t expect a hiccup at this stage in the season.

Rivard photograph

The 11*-4 Green Bay Packers travel to Minneapolis to take on the 9-6 Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in the final game of the 2012 regular season for both teams. The game was moved from a noon CST kickoff to 3:20 CST as the second game of the Fox doubleheader, so don’t miss it. It will be a good one.

The Vikings need to win the game to secure a shot at a playoff berth. If they lose they’re out … and Chicago is probably in. Bears fans will be horribly conflicted this weekend. They’ll be rooting for the Packers to beat the Vkings. Don’t go near Chicago on Sunday!

If the Packers win they secure the second seed in the playoffs, along with some extra time for players to heal due to the first-round bye that goes with it. If they lose they don’t get the bye, but will still be in the playoffs as NFC North Division Champion. I never thought I would (and after the Fail Mary always hoped I wouldn’t have to) say this, but thank you, Seattle, for beating the 49ers (quite convincingly, too) and putting the Packers in position to secure the two seed with a winny in Minny!

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson has been battling an abdominal injury suffered last week at Houston. He will play, but his effectiveness could be diminished. Well, probably not, but we can hope!

Nov 18, 2012; Detroit, MI, USA; Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb (18) during the fourth quarter against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.
Packers WR Randall “Cobbernicus” Cobb has been nursing an ankle injury suffered against Tennessee. If he goes at all he’ll probably be limited. Rookie WR Jeremy Ross would handle returns for Cobb if he can’t go, and perhaps even if he can. WR Jordy Nelson may be back for this game as well. The only real question mark health-wise for the Packers is DB Charles Woodson, who will definitely not play. Many are wondering just how bad his collarbone injury really is. Either way the Packers look to be healthier for this game than any over the second half of the season.

The obvious task for the Packers will be to “limit” Peterson. I didn’t think the Packers could hold Chris Johnson under 100 yards last week, but they held him to only 28 yards. However, we’re not talking about the same kind of back or the same kind of O-line blocking for him either. The Packers will definitely need everybody to bring their A games, maintain gap control, and tackle exceedingly well if they hope to keep Peterson out of the record books.

Last week the Packers showed us just what they’re capable of in all three phases of the game. This week all three phases will be tested more vigorously, but the stakes are obvious. The Packers need to go out and execute. As in years past, they should look upon this game as a tune-up for the playoffs.

There has been some discussion about the importance of momentum maintenance. Is it better to have to play in the first round of the playoffs, thereby (assuming a win) maintaining momentum built up over the second half of the season? Or is it better to grab the bye by the horns, rest up, heal up, and then come out and tear through two playoff games as opposed to three of them – but at the risk of having to kickstart momentum for the playoffs while actually in the playoffs?

What do you think Packers Nation?

Here are some things I’ll be looking for while I watch the game:

Aug 30, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) and guard Josh Sitton (71) during the game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Packers offensive line. It looks as if the starting O-line will be Newhouse at LT, Lang at LG, Dietrich-Smith at C, Sitton at RG, and Barclay at RT. The same thing that concerned me last week concerns me again this week. If any of these guys have to leave the game who replaces them? We’ll be looking at more rookies and practice squad guys most of us haven’t heard of before. But … they’ll have to get the job done, much like Barclay has at RT. In any case the O-line will have my attention as I look at how they do against the Vikings pass rush and the kind of holes they open for the ball carriers. In all honesty they always have my attention. It all starts with the big guys up front!

Packers run game. Don’t look now, but the Packers have run for over 100 yards in their last five games. Starks is definitely out but Alex Green looks like he can soak up some carries this week. Harris and Grant both did well last week. Add Green to that mix and the Packers don’t have one guy who can do it all, but between them they’re getting it done. I’ll be looking for a fast track and a sometimes porous run defense to add up to another 100-plus yard game on the ground this week.

Packers passing game. It looks as if Nelson will be ready to go this week. Again, the Packers get one back and they lose one. This week it’s Cobbernicus who’s questionable with that ankle. The rest of the receivers will just have to carry the load if the dangerously intelligent Cobb can’t go. I almost wish MM would hold him out even if he’s cleared to play. He’s become such an important part of the Packers O that they can’t afford to lose him for the playoffs – whether they start next week or not for the Packers.

Finley had yet another big game against the Titans. It would be great to see him keep performing at that level. I didn’t hear anything this week about anybody harping about next year or how football is a business, so I’ll be watching for the receivers to run precise routes, make big catches, not give the ball to anybody except the officials, and above all to refrain from drops.

Dec 16, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) drops back to pass against the Chicago Bears during the second quarter at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Rodgers historically has good games in domed stadiums. He also historically has to run for his life when he’s going against the Vikings pass rush. I think Rodgers will be handing the ball off more than he’s throwing it in this game, but when he does throw it’ll probably be on the move more in this game than in others. There is nobody better at throwing on the move than 12. Just keep your head on a swivel, Aaron!

Packers defensive line/LBs. This game will be all about stopping Peterson. Just like Johnson last week, Peterson is a threat to score every time he breaks into the clear from anywhere on the field. And just like last week the big guys up front will have to tie up blockers and let the LBs get to Peterson early enough that he can’t get into a footrace with the DBs.

Having Matthews back for this game will be huge. He missed the previous Vikings game and I believe a decent chunk of that huge day Peterson had was because 52 wasn’t there to close and finish. I’ll be looking for the Claymaker to have a big game against Peterson and the Vikings O-line.

Everybody will be getting after Vikes QB Christian Ponder. Minnesota is dead last in the league in passing offense. I’ll be watching for the Packers’ pass rush to help the Vikings maintain that ignominious statistic.

Packers DBs. The Packers secondary mission this week is to ensure that there are no easy yards for Vikings receivers. But first and foremost they have to be sound in run support and when they have to tackle they’ll have to tackle well. If Peterson gets into the open field he’ll have to be tackled after doing as little damage as possible. If Peterson is held below 100 yards it will be in large part because the Packers DBs tackled effectively.

In the previous game against the Vikings this season the DBs also closed on INT opportunities. This week I’ll be looking for them to have chances at picks again, and I’ll be watching for them to make those plays. If they do, Peterson can run all day between the 30s but it won’t matter on the scoreboard.

Packers special teams. So which Mason Crosby will the Packers get this week? The one who made everything he tried last week, or the one who has been, shall we say, inconsistent this season? This game will be indoors and Crosby historically kicks well in domed parks, but will that be enough to push the numbers in the right direction?

I’m all for loyalty. I’m all for giving second, third, and fourth chances when warranted. Crosby has, in my opinion, used up all his chances. If he doesn’t kick well in this game things might get ugly.

I still think the Packers are due for a big play on special teams. Could be a big return, could be a blocked punt … let’s just hope it’s not another lateral pass on a punt return!

Fearsome Predictions:

Dec 23, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant (25) rushes with the football during the game against the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field. The Packers won 55-7. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

- The Packers will run for over 100 yards in this game, extending the streak to six consecutive games over the century mark on the ground. The O-line, especially Sitton and Barclay on the right side, has done a good job of opening holes for Grant, Harris, and Green. Expect that to continue this week.

- Somebody will get loose for a long (40-yard or more) run against Minnesota.

- At least two of the Packers TDs will be scored on the ground.

- Rodgers will throw for well more than 300 yards and at least three touchdowns. His QB rating will be 125 or better.

- The Packers will have a long TD reception off play-action – probably to Nelson.

- The Packers will sack Ponder four times. Matthews will have two of them. Neal will have another.

- The Packers will intercept three Ponder passes. Burnett will get one of them, Shields another, and one of the opportunistic LBs will snag the third.

- The Packers will have fewer penalties than the Vikings, but there will be a few pre-snap goofs due to the noise, both real and artificial, in the Metrodome. Let’s just hope the roof stays up!

- Try as they might, the Packers defense will not hold Peterson under 100 yards rushing, but they will not allow him to set the all-time single season rushing record.

- The Vikings crowd will be waving their “rally towels” and much will be made of the purple lighting vindictively turned against innocent and defenseless landmarks in the area, all in an effort to get Vikings fans to get behind their team. They haven’t done the towel thing since Favre was a Viking! Imagine having to be reminded to get behind your team!

Because the game was changed to a late kickoff we’ll probably be watching the game from the comfort of our own media center. Son John expressed reservations about that approach, stating tradition, strong Packer fan turnout, and the surprisingly good pub food to be enjoyed at Tailgators on FM1488 in Magnolia. He’s also hard in the middle of his Christmas break. One way or another we’ll be watching the game and looking for a Packers victory! I’ll still be tweeting random thoughts on the game and the telecast to all those who dare to follow at @PackersTX.

The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers have had a long and bitter rivalry that has now spanned more than 91 years and 185 meetings. While the current influx of trash talk by the likes of Brandon Marshall has sparked a new interest nationwide, this is far from anything new. As us Packers fans know all too well, this rivalry has been heated for a very long time.

Before we embark on chapter 186 of this great rivalry, I thought it would be fitting to take a trip down memory lane and remember the great moments of the past. I have arranged them chronological order.

The 1924 Packers.

1. A rivalry is born – Nov. 23, 1924 – Bears 3, Packers 0

While this was not the first time these two teams met, make no mistake, this is when the great rivalry was born. It was the type of heated, hard-fought battle that we have come to expect when these two teams get together. They literally fought for every yard in this game. Eventually tempers reached to a boiling point when the Bears’ Frank Hanny and the Packers’ Walter Voss’s heated verbal exchanges led to punches being thrown, which in turn led to the first player ejections in NFL history.

2. The Start of Lombardi’s dominance – Sept. 30, 1962 – Packers 49, Bears 0

It is well known that Papa Bear Halas hated Lombardi and the Packers. It is rumored that one time he visited the Packers locker room to speak with Lombardi, just 5 minutes before game time. saying it was an emergency. When Lombardi rushed over, Halas simply said, “I hope your team is ready, because we are going to kick your ass!” Lombardi, did not take kindly to the remarks and made sure his team let Halas know it. They dominated the Bears from start to finish, with the game ending in the Packers’ largest margin of victory ever at the time. Lombardi, with a few exceptions, owned the Bears most of his coaching career beating them 13 times.

Packers quarterback Lynn Dickey hugs PK Chester Marcol after he ran a blocked punt in for the game-winning touchdown.

3. The Chester Marcol game – Sept. 7, 1980 – Packers 12, Bears 6

This may go down as one of the most unlikely endings in the history of the Packers. Chester Marcol lined up for what could have been a game-winning field goal in overtime. However, things did not go as planned. The Bears’ Alan Page stormed through and blocked the kick. The ball ricocheted and caromed right back to Marcol who proceeded to run with the ball as if he was literally running for his life! With prescription frame glasses, and his single-barred facemask, Marcol ran in for the touchdown. The team in celebration rushed to Marcol, who looked more like he just escaped from a burning building rather than having run for the game -deciding touchdown.

4. The most lopsided Bears win – December 7th, 1980 – Bears 61, Packers 7

After what would be the second worst loss in Packers history, Coach Bart Starr was so infuriated with the Bears that he ran to confront Coach Neil Armstrong. He was upset that the Bears were still blitzing late in the fourth quarter with the game already decided. What coach Starr didn’t know was a man he fired last season who now worked for the Bears, Bill Tobin, was hell bent on revenge and spent the entire off-season trying to decode the Packers signaling system. He was successful. “We wanted 100 points” he said at the time.

Walter Payton dives over the pile to score a touchdown against the Packers in 1985.

5. The 1985 game – Nov. 10t, 1985 – Bears 16, Packers 10

Apparently the Packers did not take kindly to being on the receiving end of the “Birth of the Fridge” two weeks earlier. They left horse manure in the Bears locker room before the game, and battled them tooth and nail during it. Even though the Bears were the far superior team, they got all they could handle from a determined and chippy Green Bay Packers club. They played tough and much like the game in 1924 tempers flared. DBs Mark Lee and Ken Stills were ejected after taking late shots on Bears running backs Walter Payton and Matt Suhey.

6. Charles Martin and his criminal act – Nov. 23, 1986 – Bears 12, Packers 10

As a Packers fan, I am programmed to hate the Chicago Bears, and I do with all my heart. That being said, there was just no place for this. Not on the football field, or anywhere else. It was sick, and it made me ashamed to be a Packers fan. Charles Martin was suspended for two games for this, it should have been for life. I will let the video below speak for itself …

7. The replay game – Nov. 5, 1989 – Packers 14, Bears 13

Don Majkowski led the Packers to a stunning come-from-behind victory against the Bears, their first since 1984; however, it almost never happened. He threw a late touchdown to Sterling Sharpe, which was initially called back because the referee said the Majik Man stepped past the line of scrimmage when he threw the pass. The subsequent replay review overturned the penalty which resulted in a touchdown for Green Bay. The call was so controversial that the NFL changed the rule, clarifying when a quarterback is considered past the line of scrimmage. Also, Bears Coach Mike Ditka was so enraged over the decision he ordered the Bears media staff to put an asterisk next to this game in the Bears’ official media guide the following season.

8. Favre’s 5 TDs – Nov. 12, 1995 – Packers 35, Bears 28

Anyone who is a fan of Brett Favre will point to this game as a testament to old gunslinger’s legendary toughness and resolve. First place in the NFC central was on the line and Favre’s right ankle was so badly sprained that he couldn’t even bear weight on it before the game. Many questioned whether Favre was hurting the team, by trying to play. Well, he didn’t hurt the team. In fact, he played one of the best games of his career. He threw for 336 yards and 5 touchdowns while leading the Packers to victory.

The Bears block Ryan Longwell’s game-winning field goal attempt.

9. The blocked field goal – Nov. 7, 1999 – Bears 14, Packers 13

The Packers came into this game as nine-point favorites, but were facing a very emotional Chicago Bears team that lost the legendary Walter Payton six days earlier. The Packers, down one point with 17 seconds to go, still had a chance to escape with a victory after Brett Favre led them into field goal range. They lined up for the game-winning field goal. Unfortunately, the field goal attempt was blocked and the Bears would leave victorious. The Packers would end up missing the playoffs by one game that year and head coach Ray Rhodes would be fired, becoming the only single-year coach in the history of the Green Bay Packers

B.J.
10. Winning the NFC championship in Chicago – Jan. 23, 2011 – Packers 21, Bears 14

This was a competitive and hard-fought game. The Bears lost their starting quarterback, Jay Cutler, to a knee injury (using the term “injury” very loosely), and the Packers were just too much for the Bears to overcome with backup Caleb Hanie. There was nothing better than watching the Packers get to the Super Bowl by defeating the Bears in their own stadium. I don’t know what made me happier, seeing all the disappointed Bears fans leave in droves as the Packers lined up in the victory formation, or the Packers celebrating their championship on Soldiers Field!

The 9*-4 Packers visit Soldier Field to take on the 8-5 Bears on Sunday. If the Packers win the game they clinch the NFC North with two games left to play.

I won’t go deep into analysis of this one. Everybody knows what’s at stake.

Here are some things I’ll be watching while I’m watching the game:

Packers offensive line. The Packers offensive fortunes always begin with their offensive line play. At this point it looks as if Don Barclay will play RT. If T.J. Lang can go he will most likely play at his normal LG position. If Lang cannot play Evan Dietrich-Smith will remain at LG. The Packers have been effective running the ball in the last two games, and much of the credit belongs to right side the O line- RG Sitton, RT Barclay, and whichever TE lines up with them.

Pass protection for Rodgers had better be solid. I’ll be watching for open holes the RBs can run through and clean pockets for Rodgers in this one.

Dec 9, 2012; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers running back DuJuan Harris (26) rushes with the football during the first quarter against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Packers run game. The “newfound” run game has put up respectable totals several times this season, but the last two weeks have many convinced that the Packers will be able to run the ball effectively against the Bears on Sunday. I think that much of the optimism springs from the solid performance against the Lions of DuJuan Harris. Alex Green and Ryan Grant will probably get carries too. If the Packers can spring a RB surprise on the rest of the league, similar to how Starks came on at the end of the 2010 season, I think it will be Harris this season.

The Bears do not play strong run defense. They have been reminded of this many times in many ways this week. If the Bears have a good performance defending the run in them, even with Urlacher out, we’ll probably see it Sunday. The Packers RBs will need to keep ball security high on their list of priorities- especially in the rainy/cold conditions forecasted for this game.

Packers receivers. Despite having suffered a recent relapse of foot-in-mouth disease, TE Jermichael Finley will have a big role to play in this game. With WR Nelson still out for the game he’ll have to pick up his share of the slack. I’ll be watching J Mike to see whether or not he puts his performance before himself this week.

The other receivers must protect the rock. Catch it. Hold it. Never let it go until the ref pries it from you after the play has ended.

Packers defensive line/LBs. Bears QB Cutler has some dings and it will be up to the pass rushers to force Cutler to move around to avoid them. Cutler is also prone to throw a few up in games like these. I’ll be watching the pass rush try to make Cutler complete a few to guys in green and gold.

Getting Clay Matthews back for this game is huge, but I don’t see him playing the whole game. He’ll be a situational player. I’ll be watching CM3 to see how he moves. I would hate to see his hammy act up again and lose him for the playoffs.

Jan 23, 2011; Chicago, IL, USA; Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields (37) intercepts a pass intended for Chicago Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox (13) during the second quarter of the 2011 NFC championship game at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

Packers DBs. The Packers secondary has two primary missions in this game. The first is to stop Marshall. Don’t care how they do it. Double teams. Triple teams. Safety help over the top on every play. That’s how they shut him down in the first game. Whatever works in this game.

The second mission is to finish on INT and turnover opportunities. It would be great to out-Bear the Bears defense by pick-sixing Cutler - at least once. I’ll be watching for the DBs to get their hands on some balls and to make those plays in this game.

Packers special teams. The special teams guys have to stop Hester. Anything else they can do to help in this game will be gravy. A good punting performance by Masthay will go a long way toward controlling Hester. Crosby will need to make kickoffs a non-factor by putting kickoffs into the stands and forcing the Bears to go 80 yards every possession.

Fearsome Predictions:

- The Packers will have their most productive rushing game of the season. I see them putting 175 combined rushing yards on the Bears.

- Most of the Packers rushing production will come on the right side of the OL.

- Two of the Packers TDs will be scored on the ground.

Oct 14, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) throws a pass against the Houston Texans in the second quarter at Reliant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

- Aaron Rodgers will have a standout performance from a QB rating perspective, but he will not throw for more than 250 yards.

- The Packers receivers will catch two TD passes and drop none.

- The Packers will sack Cutler five times. Three by LBs, one by a DL, and one by a blitzing safety. Matthews will get one.

- The Packers will pickoff Cutler three times. Shields, Williams, and Burnett will each finish on their opportunities.

- The Bears will have more penalties in the game than the Packers.

- Finley will be the object of at least one PF penalty perpetrated by a frustrated Bears LB or DB who took the bulletin board material Finley provided to heart.

Oct 14, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb (18) returns a kick against the Houston Texans in the second quarter at Reliant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

- Randall Cobb will have more return yardage than Hester in the game.

We’ll be watching the game with a bunch of Packers (and unfortunately Bears) fans at Tailgators on FM1488 in Magnolia. I’ll still be tweeting random thoughts on the game and the telecast to all those who dare to follow at @PackersTX.

This has been an abbreviated look at the Packers-Bears game. No matter what heroics take place on the field in Chicago they will never be as significant or as profound as the truly heroic deeds of the teachers and faculty at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday in Newtown, Conn. Our hearts go out to the victims and those who will be deprived of their love and company.

Bring it Bears! Go Pack GO!

Early on in the season and especially following the debacle in Seattle, Green Bay Packers offensive linemen were muttering about how opposing team’s defensive linemen were, to paraphrase, pinning their ears back and coming after Aaron Rodgers. No respect or consideration for that matter was given to the Packers running game. Opposing defenses were simply charging hard for Aaron Rodgers, an offensive lineman’s nightmare.

All season long Packers Coach Mike McCarthy has been trying to establish the running game. Now after two consecutive 100-plus yard games by-committee efforts, the pundits are up in arms.

The argument, and it’s a good one, is you can’t take the ball out of Aaron Rodgers hands and expect to win. There are no Adrian Petersons in the Packer backfield. This is true. Alex Green, DuJuan Harris, Ryan Grant, and when healthy, James Starks are not going to win you Super Bowls. But they might ensure Packers fans that Aaron Rodgers stays on the field so they have a fighting chance.

Of course it would be nice, but the Packers don’t need an Adrian Peterson. They simply need a respectable running game. They need the opposing team’s defensive lineman to hesitate just a second to see if the Packers are running the ball. That second is the difference between Aaron Rodgers finding an open receiver and Aaron Rodgers running for his life.

The other portion of the argument is opposing defenses simply don’t respect the Packers running backs enough to slow their charge of Aaron Rodgers. There is probably some truth to this perspective. But as Packers fans know, Mike McCarthy is stubborn. His commitment to running the ball this year is evidence of that. The success of the running game against the Vikings and the Lions is proof that you don’t need an All-Pro running back to run past defenders. It simply means the Packers running backs need to capitalize on opportunity. And it seems they have the talent to do so.

Establishing the running game will open up the short passing game and ultimately the deep pass. In 2011 the Packers were able to score at will by throwing the ball and then throwing the ball some more. Opposing teams have caught on to this scheme.

Now it’s time to migrate back a bit closer to the roots of the West Coast Offense on which the Packers predicate their scheme.

Establish the run, get yards in chunks with the short pass, and then take it to the bank with the long pass. Despite what the pundits say, you can have it both ways.
