The Packers’ unofficial depth chart for the offense released Tuesday showed rookie first round pick Derek Sherrod as the starting left guard and a pile of talented tight ends fighting for a roster spot behind starter Jermichael Finley.

What it also shows is a roster filled with solid depth … A factor that has become the hallmark of Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy teams.

While Sherrod has been pegged the starting left guard since the first snap of camp, veteran TJ Lang is situated right behind him and while Andrew Quarless is penned as Finley’s backup at tight end, the logjam of talent behind those two is impressive. It also begs the question of how many tight ends will they keep and whether Spencer Havner will be utilized more on defense. (more…)

With day three of Packers camp in the books and the first day of pad work being held Monday night, there seem to be three things (among others) developing that are of interest to the final coming together of a team.

First, the rookies – it looks like first and second round choices, Derek Sherrod and Randall Cobb, are being looked to quickly for contributions.

Cobb, according to tweets last night and early morning news reports, made several difficult catches yesterday, showed impressive bursts of speed and is being touted as everything he’s been billed in the early going. Getting his timing with quarterback Aaron Rodgers is going to take some time. (more…)
