A couple of weeks ago, I jumped on the bandwagon in hopes that the Green Bay Packers would begin their search to bolster their running game through free agency and two available running backs were brought quickly to the forefront – Ahmad Bradshaw and Steven Jackson.

At the time, I posted a comparison between the two and concluded that Bradshaw, despite his injury history, would be the best fit for the Packers offensive scheme.

The Packers didn’t listen to me. Darn. They went after Steven Jackson. For a week, the trail was hot and heavy until Jackson decided his best move would be to move south to Atlanta instead of north to Green Bay.

Packers Nation was crushed. A couple of days ago, I decided to repost a blog about why the Packers shouldn’t give up on their free agent search for a suitable running back and that Bradshaw was still the best available back on the market.

This time Ted Thompson listened … ahahaha … right.

But all kidding aside, the news broke just this afternoon that the Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers were actively seeking out Bradshaw’s services.

Dan Hanzus, an Around the League Writer for NFL.com, reported that ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote the Packers and Steelers had renewed their searches for running backs and had Bradshaw squarely in their targets.

Here’s what Hanzus wrote:

The Steelers have a void in their backfield after allowing Rashard Mendenhall to leavefor the Arizona Cardinals. Pittsburgh hosted Beanie Wells on Friday, but a team source told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazettethat Wells has “a bad wheel.”

If he can get back to full health following another foot surgery, Bradshaw has the potential to be a free-agent steal. Like Mendenhall in Arizona, Bradshaw would likely have to settle for a one-year deal that would set him up to hit the open market again in 2014. Bradshaw turns on 27 on Tuesday.

Frankly, I am somewhat surprised by the Packers’ interest after being shunned by Jackson. However, Ted Thompson is showing the resolve that’s required of NFL general managers in moving ahead in the best interest of their team. Finding the best running back available for his backfield is what Thompson is intent on doing and if Bradshaw is indeed back to 100 percent health-wise, he would be the steal of the NFL Free Agency period.

Should that all take place, it would be ironic for the Packers to be the team to make it happen. The team has lost linebacker Erik Walden, wide receiver Greg Jennings and tight end Tom Crabtree to other teams and have signed no free agents from other teams up to this point.

Will Bradshaw be the first?

Stay tuned …

NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks’ analysis today of the top two receivers on the Free Agent market, Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings, is an interesting look at quality over quantity.

With receivers taking over as the marquee players on the market because of the fact that the NFL has become a pass-happy league, Brooks’s look at these two players illustrates that the best player doesn’t always come out on top as far as what teams value.

In his film study, Brooks breaks down each of these receivers and compares them on ball skills, route running, yardage after the catch, explosiveness and clutch performance.

Brooks favors Jennings on the ball skills and route running. He says this about Jennings’ ball skills:

Jennings is one of the best pass catchers in the NFL. He snatches the ball out of the air with his big mitts; his hand-eye concentration is remarkable. He tracks and adjusts well to the flight of the ball while shielding defenders with his body to keep them from knocking the ball away at the last moment.

On his route running, Brooks says this about Jennings:

Jennings is one of the slickest route runners in the game, using a vast array of stems and releases to obtain leverage on defenders at the tops of routes. Additionally, he understands how to vary his tempo and speed to set defenders up for double moves down the field. Even while enjoying the freedom to empty his bag of tricks to get open in Green Bay, Jennings rarely affected the timing of the passing game. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers – who routinely released the ball before Jennings would hit the top of his break — certainly trusted in Jennings’ ability to get to the designated spot. Every NFL quarterback covets a No. 1 receiver with exceptional route running skills, so it’s not surprising that Jennings tops the list of available free-agent receivers.

Brooks gives Wallace the advantage on yards after the catch and explosiveness, but again gives Jennings the nod on being clutch:

Evaluating Jennings’ play throughout his career, I was most impressed with his postseason performance. He consistently stepped up his game in the playoffs, thriving as the Packers‘ No. 1 receiver when the pressure was on. In 10 postseason games, Jennings has 50 receptions for 673 yards and six scores. Although injuries and the emergence of Jordy Nelson prevented Jennings from making a significant impact during the Packers‘ most recent playoff runs, the fact that he was so instrumental in helping the team win Super Bowl XLV makes him a special player, in my mind.

But does the fact that Jennings rates over Wallace translate into dollars? Not according to Brooks who says that Jennings’ age and injuries will play a large role on his final contract numbers and even with which team he eventually signs.

We’ll see how Brooks’s comparisons and bottom line evaluation will play out when teams go after the top free agents for real starting Tuesday at 3 p.m. CDT.

Raymond T. Rivard photograph

While it’s not a good thing to look too far ahead when it comes to the National Football League, we caught this quick snippet on CheeseheadTV – the home and away schedule for 2013.

I’m saying it right now – the Packers better make hay this year because when they enter the 2013 regular season, they will be playing a schedule that will be be tough – very tough.

The Packers will be facing teams from two of the roughest divisions in the entire league – the AFC North and the NFC East. In addition to that, they will play opponents from the NFC South and NFC West with similar records from 2012 – those opponents are to be determined.

Throw in the North Division opponents, Bears, Vikings, and Lions – well, you can see where I’m going.

Here’s the home and away schedule:

Home

Philadelphia Eagles

Washington Redskins

Cleveland Browns

Pittsburgh Steelers

NFC South opponent

Away

Dallas Cowboys

New York Giants

Baltimore Ravens

Cincinnati Bengals

NFC West opponent

We all know what the NFC brings, but even tougher still will be the opponents from the NFC North – Pittsburgh and Baltimore play a style of game that’s both brutal and just plain mean. Throw into the mix a much-improving Cincinnati Bengals squad and the who-knows-what-team’s-going-to-show-up Cleveland Browns and we see contests where the Packers will have to bring their A-game week-in and week-out.

In addition, having to face the NFC East Eagles, Giants, Cowboys and Redskins will make for an interesting season. IMO, there isn’t a weak opponent anywhere in sight.

But that’s next year. We all know that it’s the now and present that is important as training camp is a mere four days away. The team’s focus is on opening day against the San Francisco 49ers, followed four days later by a tilt with the Chicago Bears – that’s a pretty brutal start to a season right there.

We’ll worry about 2013 next year. I just thought I would throw it out there for you.

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

Sometimes a poll is slanted toward a specific segment of society. Sometimes the numbers are simply fudged to get the results wanted.

Though I have no evidence whatsoever, I simply can’t believe this most recent poll set out by ESPN, that network that historically has been tilted toward Dallas. In fact, for every poll like this one that shows the Cowboys are America’s Team, I could probably find another that shows the Packers or the Giants or the Steelers are the country’s favorite football team.

I’m not a Cowboys hater or a Skip Bayless naysayer most of the time, but when I see polls like this it just turns my crank. First of all, polls like this mean absolutely nothing. Fans are fans and loyalty to a team isn’t something that is going to be swayed from one week to the next. If you’re a Cowboys fan, fine. Congratulations. If there are more of them than there are Packers or Giants fans, then that’s fine, too.

Just don’t go puffing out your chest … take a look at the scoreboard. The last time the Cowboys were in the Super Bowl was 1995. The Packers, Giants and Steelers have all dominated Super Bowls since then. And all of those teams have histories filled with tradition and championships.

Championships are what count … not how many claim to be a fan.

Anyway, Check out the site if you want to see where your team stands in this recent poll. BTW, if you’re a Jaguars fan you will probably be really disappointed.

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

I didn’t like what I heard coming out of the Pittsburgh Steelers camp today regarding longtime fan favorite and receiver extraordinaire Hines Ward. The team cut ties with Ward – an action that sent shivers up my spine, understanding that this action could be a precursor to what we might be seeing in Green Bay in the coming weeks.

Donald Driver, another longtime fan favorite here in Wisconsin, did what Ward did a couple weeks ago in asking the Packers for a shot at competing for a roster spot by offering to take a cut in pay. It didn’t work out so well for Ward and unless there is a turn in the need to follow the business model, it won’t work so well for Driver.

It comes down not only to dollars and cents, but also to roster spots and who should ultimately have them. Driver and Ward are both veterans with well more than a dozen years of service to their team, but they both are also being pushed by younger talent.

Like the Steelers, the Packers would be foolish to deny the talents of their younger up and coming players. For the Packers, the emergence of Tori Gurley not only as a receiver, but as a special teams player, has the team facing a decision on his future. Do they risk losing him to another team or do they finally promote him to the 53-man roster? The answer is pretty simple. In addition, do the Packers allow Driver to take valuable time from players like James Jones and Randall Cobb. Both are talents who, if Driver stays around, will most likely be highly underutilized.

So, though I love Donald Driver, I fear his time with the Packers is fast coming to an end. He has said that he wants to play until he’s 40. That’s three years. His time with the Packers could simply be one more year … but after what’s happened to Hines Ward, Driver’s time is most likely done.

We appreciate everything he’s done for the franchise and the state of Wisconsin, but the Packers are an organization built on one premise and that’s to win championships. They can’t give themselves the best opportunity to do that by hanging on to Driver.

The release of Hines Ward is the writing on the wall.

That’s because the Green Bay Packers FanCam will be at Lambeau Field to take a 360-degree image of fans in the stadium.

The camera that will take the shot from the 50 yard line is an ultra-high-def, 5-billion pixel piece of equipment capable of taking a 360-degree image.

This is according to the published report on Packers.com:

The exciting fan feature, which has been popular with fans of the Wisconsin Badgers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, New York Rangers, Michigan Wolverines and Kentucky Wildcats, allows fans to identify themselves by using an optic-zoom and tagging feature.

This high-definition image will capture Lambeau Field in its entirety, and the image takes between 5-7 minutes to shoot. While looking at the photo, fans will be able to “step inside” a view they otherwise may never get to see.

The resolution of the photo will be so high that fans will be able to visit Packers.com, follow the links to the photo, zoom in to find themselves or friends, “tag” themselves with a Packers G-Force logo, and share via email, Facebook and Twitter.

So be sure to be in your seat by 3 p.m. for your photo session Sunday and then enjoy the game as the Packers take the field against the Giants in what is sure to be a classic playoff game at Lambeau Field.

What’s been talked about most this week and will be discussed right up until game time of the Packers and Giants showdown this weekend will be just how the Packers are going to deal with that vaunted defense blowing into Lambeau Field.

Well, we know it’s not the Packers’ defense everyone is talking about, don’t we? No, we’re talking about the Giants defense – that same outfit that held the Atlanta Falcons scoreless in the first round of the playoffs.

The Packers defense, on the other hand, has been an enigma, a unit that fills its roster with All-Pros, but throughout the season looked like … well frankly, I’m not sure how to describe them.

They’ve been gashed week -in and week-out on big play after big play as even marginal quarterbacks such as Kyle Orton (twice), Christian Ponder, Josh Freeman, and Josh McCown moved their teams up and down the field, throwing pretty much at will.

More after the jump and don’t forget to Like Lombardiave.com on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

I’m hoping that today’s match-ups between the Giants and Falcons and Steelers and Broncos instill a bit more interest.

Yesterday’s Bengals vs. Texans was entertaining for one half before Houston literally ran away from Cincy. And as for the Lions vs. Saints … we all knew deep down how that game was going to turn out. The Lions are missing many pieces … and Mr. Suh was completely invisible. Clearly, the New Orleans was the best team playing yesterday and will probably show that, with the Packers, stand head and shoulders above the rest of the field.

So, with the Giants getting set to kick-off with the Falcons, I have a feeling that somehow Mr. Manning will find a way to win this one … but does it matter to the Packers? Probably not. I feel they will be ready next weekend for whichever team steps on the Lambeau Field turf.

So, without any more hype, who wins today?

Take the poll and enjoy the games.

The Green Bay Packers’ linebackers coach who has brought enthusiasm and a player’s attitude to the coaching ranks for the Packers, has been in Green Bay for the past three years and is probably most well known among the general public for his comments in last year’s Super Bowl that were caught on tape when he told linebacker Clay Matthews that “It is time…” Matthews consequently went out and forced the game-changing fumble by the Steelers’ Rashard Mendenhall.

Spofford’s story spells out the full field of finalists and gives us a look at the personal bio of Greene’s.

A semifinalist three times previously, Packers Outside Linebackers Coach Kevin Greene for the first time has advanced to the finalist stage for potential induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Ok, so you think the Packers have it bad.

Yes, they’ve been visited by that injury bug, especially this past weekend along the offensive line.

But, in my estimation, those are things that tend to take care of themselves, given time and a team deep with talent.

“Next guy up,” is what Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. It’s a simple philosophy that he proved was effective last season and hopes to make work again this year as he moves players around on the offensive line to patch together a unit that will be charged with protecting Aaron Rodgers from the likes of Julius Peppers, Brian Uhrlacher and Ndamukong Suh over the next two weeks of the regular season.

But we here in Packers Nation certainly won’t stand for the trash talkin’ Niners fans putting down the best team in the NFL and a team that is headed toward history.

That’s why Hamm and I have agreed to start sharing our thoughts about the possibility of a 49ers vs. Packers playoff and some of the things that will have to happen to bring that to fruition.

Today we start with a look at each team’s final four games. While cautious about how things will turn out for the Packers, I feel that Hamm is taking it a bit too far in claiming the 49ers will have the home field advantage. The Packers have ways to go yet, but they are WELL on their way to proving not only to 49ers fans, but the entie NFL that they will be the team to beat.

So, after the jump you will find my column followed by Hamm’s. Enjoy them both.

It's run has been extended through Nov. 20.

It’s not often that I get to talk about the Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Milwaukee Reperatory Theater all in one gulp, but I’m honored to do so right here.

You see, there’s a production now in its run at the theater about a famous coach and one of the employees at that theater just happens to be a Steelers fan … and not just a Steelers fan … Craig Gottschalk is also the editor and lead writer of Fansided.com’s own Nice Pick, Cowher.

As an employee at the theater, Gottschalk posted a recent blog about his experiences in preparing for “Lombardi,” the Broadway smash hit about the Packers great head coach, citing his slow evolution toward understanding what being a Packers fan is all about.

He describes having to endure his beloved Steelers losing to the Packers in last year’s Super Bowl, and then turning around and having to spend months in preparing for the “Lombardi” run at his own theater. Bittersweet though it was for him, the process melted some of the ice in Gottschalk’s heart toward the Packers as the show neared and finally opened.

If you are a Packers fan … or even a Steelers fan, you’ve got to read about this incredible homage to Lombardi … in fact, you might even want to go online here to get your tickets for the show whose run has been extended through Nov. 20.

Gottschalk’s view of the the Packers through Steelers’ eyes is refreshing and humbling for all football fans … after all, Gottschalk says, “It’s only a game.” His self-realization brings us all back to earth … and his description of rubbing elbows with the greatness of Bart Starr, Paul Horning and Packers fans in general is just plain fun.

You’ve got to read Gottschalk’s piece in full here … you will enjoy every word of it.

Raymond T. Rivard photograph

So, just how is value measured?

Well, according to a Forbes recently published annual report, the Dallas Cowboys are worth $1.85 billion, making Jerry Jones’ team the most valuable of all American franchises, valued just less than England’s Manchester United’s $1.9 billion.

The New York Yankees are valued at $1.7 billion, according to Forbes.

According to the report that was recently highlighted on ESPN, other NFL teams in the top five in value are as follows: Washington Redskins ($1.55 billion); New England Patriots ($1.4 billion); New York Giants ($1.3 billion); and New York Jets ($1.223 billion).

These numbers were based on 2010 factors and showed that the Giants recorded the largest increase at 10 percent, mainly because of the team’s move into the new Meadowlands. The Jets, which shares that stadium with the Giants, showed a 7 percent single season increase.

As might be expected, the Packers, last season’s Super Bowl champion, also showed a hefty 7 percent increase in overall value.

However, when compared with the entire league, the Packers could be seen as nothing more than “average.”

The Packers are lumped together with 15 other teams that have a value of about $1 billion. In addition to the Packers, other teams in that group are Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Denver, Pittsburgh, Miami and Carolina.

Considering many of the teams listed above, success isn’t a huge factor in determining wealth. Though given the fact the Packers are among the smallest franchises in all of professional sports, being valued at $1 billion is pretty remarkable.

With the structural improvements planned to be completed this coming year on Lambeau Field, the team’s overall value should increase accordingly.

Also considering the value of much larger market teams with less value – franchises like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars – the Packers continue to be one of the most remarkable success stories in all of sports.

Monday’s madness

For The Green Bay Packers, this was a weekend of rest and relaxation … A well-deserved weekend of relaxation with their Thursday night season-opening victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Though the weekend of games were entertaining, they also provided insight into the future.

In planning for the immediate, the Packers watched Cam Newton, this year’s top pick and next opponent, pick apart the Arizona Cardinals’ defense for 422 yards and an impressive display in the vertical passing game.

Granted, the Cardinals’ defense isn’t the Packers’ defense, but the rookie has shown that the Panthers made a good decision in taking him first overall and that the Packers will have to plan well.

Dom Capers will need to design packages to confuse the rookie for 60 minutes … If he can do that the Packers should win going away. If the Packers allow the Panthers to stay in the game into the fourth quarter this could be one of those trap games that could come back to haunt them at the end of the season.

Another factor that stood out from the weekend was the NFC North’s domination of the NFC South.

Though the Packers game came down to the final play and the Lions/Bucs game to the final minute, the Bears’ creaming of the Falcons placed the final stamp of divisional domination on the weekend.

Yes, the Packers and Lions games were close, but all that matters at this point are the records: NFC North 3 NFC South 0.

Even the the Vikings showed some spunk against the San Diego Chargers by holding a lead for three quarters despite Donovan McNabb’s dismal debut – he ended up throwing for fewer than 40 yards total in the game.

Sure, had the Vikings been playing without Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson it wouldn’t have been close, but the fact of the matter is that the Vikings do have those players and they make a difference.

The Vikes’ performance also underscores the notion that the NFC North should be considered one, if not the toughest division in all of professional football.

It also creates a heightened awareness among all players, coaches and fans that when these NFC North teams meet this year, it’s going to be brutal. These games will be bitterly fought spectacles that should be well worth the price of admission.

Looking around at some of the other games this past weekend, we really didn’t see any major upsets. The closest thing to an upset was the shellacking the Ravens put on the Steelers … But when a team turns the ball over seven times like the Steelers did, there’s no way they’re going to win.

Other mildly interesting games simply because of the score differentials came in the Buffalo vs. Kansas City game, and the Indianapolis vs. Houston game.

Some of the most entertaining were the 49ers vs. Seahawks, Giants vs. Redskins, with honorable mention to (zzzzzzz) the Jags and Titans.

But without question the best game of the weekend was the Jets vs. Cowboys. There was enough drama what with the Ryan boys and the return of Plaxico Burress to last the week. And the high drama in action was highlighted by Tony (the fumbler) Romo showing his true colors.

So, all in all, the first weekend came to a close with lots of action (could there be a better showing than Tom Brady’s 500-plus yards, 4 touchdown performance and 906-total yards between him and Chad Henne?), lots of drama, but not a lot of surprises.

A great start to another season for America’s Game …

Can it get any better? Stay tuned …

You probably saw the NFL team flags being held by team player representatives Thursday night, but you probably had no idea who the players were that were holding them.

For the first time, 32 legendary NFL alumni, one representing each team, were part of the pregame celebration at Lambeau Field Thursday night.
The alumni held their team’s flag and formed a chute on the field with players representing the NFC on one side and AFC on the other.

You saw Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr walk through the gauntlet onto the field holding the Green Bay Packers flag followed by the Super Bowl XLV Champions running onto the field.

Following the introduction of the Packers, the 2010 championship year was unveiled on the interior stadium wall and celebrated with a brief fireworks display.

The team flags will be flown by each team at their stadium during their first home game.

The NFL alumni who were on-hand at Lambeau Field to hold their team’s flag were:

Arizona Cardinals, Ron Wolfley (RB)
Atlanta Falcons, Steve Bartkowski (QB)
Baltimore Ravens, Matt Stover (K)
Buffalo Bills, Andre Reed (WR)
Carolina Panthers, Muhsin Muhammad (WR)
Chicago Bears, Richard Dent (DE)
Cincinnati Bengals, Ken Anderson (QB)
Cleveland Browns, Kevin Mack (RB)
Dallas Cowboys , Jay Novacek (TE)
Denver Broncos, Randy Gradishar (LB)
Detroit Lions, Charlie Sanders (TE)
Green Bay Packers, Bart Starr (QB)
Houston Texans, N.D. Kalu (DE)
Indianapolis Colts, Bill Brooks (WR)
Jacksonville Jaguars, Don Davey (DT)
Kansas City Chiefs, Willie Lanier (LB)
Miami Dolphins, Dwight Stephenson (C)
Minnesota Vikings, John Randle (DT)
New England Patriots, John Hannah (G)
New Orleans Saints, Deuce McAllister (RB)
New York Giants, Harry Carson (LB)
New York Jets, Al Toon (WR)
Oakland Raiders, Ted Hendricks (LB)
Philadelphia Eagles, Eric Allen (CB)
Pittsburgh Steelers, Dermontti Dawson (C)
St. Louis Rams, Aeneas Williams (DB)
San Diego Chargers, Junior Seau (LB)
San Francisco 49ers, Dwight Clark (WR)
Seattle Seahawks, Cortez Kennedy (DT)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mike Alstott (FB)
Tennessee Titans, Eddie George (RB)
Washington Redskins, Larry Brown (RB)

How would you like to have a roster like that?

I’ve always been a fan of the fashion of the NFL, team colors, uniform design and, of course helmets.
In addition to the traditional designs found with the old guard of the league … The Packers, the Colts, Giants, Eagles, Rams … There are also great designs like the Chargers, the Bengals, and the Chiefs.
However, there is one team’s helmet that I just can’t figure out … The Buffalo Bills … Talk about staggeringly ugly.
And if there was a chance for this team to make changes, it was this year as the team came out with a “new” design.
Sorry, but it looks to me like the hideous design of so many years past.
I just don’t seem to understand it … I mean, I get the buffalo logo … That’s a no-brainer … But what’s up with that red streak through the middle of the Buffalo?
Can anyone enlighten me on its significance?
Yes, there other teams with ugly, ugly uniforms … The Broncos, the Seahawks … But even they don’t come close to the ugliness of the Bills … If ugliness is a reason for lack of success on the field the Bills must be the poster child.
Am I the only one who sees this injustice in lack of style? Is it just me?
If not, then there must be others out there who feel that the design team in Buffalo must have gone out the night before they “Redesigned” the team’s uniform and helmet.
Clearly, their vision must have been blurred.
I pity all those teams that must play the Bills next season and every season from now and into the future.
Even those who designed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers uniforms awoke from their own boozy slumber and took an axe to that dreamcicle uniform. It’s time for it to happen with the design of the Bills uniforms and helmet.
Sooner than later, please.
