OK, so this happening is about as far-fetched as Mr. Spock beaming into my living room, but I have to comment on it because Terrell Owens always amuses me – especially when he comes out and says he wants to play for the Chicago Bears.

Yes, I said that right. Yesterday TO came out with a statement saying he would love to play in Chicago for Marc Trestman, his former coach who was with him in San Francisco way back when.

Here’s what TO had to say as reported on my favorite Bears fan site, beargoggleson.com:

I played my first early years in San Francisco with [Bears head coach Marc Trestman] and shortly after that, he left to do some things. I haven’t talked to Marc in a long while. I know he’s gone on and done some things, now he’s back in the NFL. So, I never really thought about it until myself and Napoleon were talking about it earlier, but I would definitely welcome it if they would give it some serious consideration. To think about [Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall] on the other side and me on one side, that’s really dangerous. I’m keeping myself in shape just for any opportunity that may come about.”

I would love for this to happen. First of all, if he were to sign, he would never make the team. The Bears already have Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Earl Bennett, Eric Weems and Devin Hester. The Bears aren’t going to part anytime soon with any of those guys. If he did make the team he would be riding the bench and would be nothing but a distraction – the best thing that could happen to the Bears. Don’t they have a big enough distraction with that guy by the name of Jay Cutler?

Secondly, TO is just too old. The Bears got rid of Brian Urlacher, so why would they bring in TO? That would be a slap in Urlacher’s face – and another distraction.

So, though it’s not going to happen, the thought of it is amusing and thought I would share it with you.

My question is this: Why would any NFL team consider bringing this guy in?

Move on, TO. There must be some golf courses out there who might welcome your membership.

Really?) were feeling the effects of a tough weekend of NFC Divisional Playoff Games.

Boomer, from over at Fansided’s Beargoggleson.com, was angered by the Packers loss to the New York Giants. He wasn’t upset because the Bears’ arch rival to the north was finally beaten in a playoff game, but because he believes it should have been the Bears that was providing the beat down on the Packers. He curses Jay Cutler for chasing down a San Diego Charger after an interception and injuring his hand, and he blames wide receiver Johnny Knox for the demise of the Bears’ season by also getting injured.

For some reason, I’m not too sympathetic.

However, I do feel the pain of Gene Higginbotham, the author of the piece from over at Who Dat Dish, the New Orleans Saints Fansided.com’s blog site. While the Packers were thrown completely off their game against the Giants, the Saints were within 90 seconds or so of the NFC Championship Game, but shockingly lost in the final moments to the heroic comeback by the San Francisco 49ers.

While the media has dubbed last Saturday’s catch by Vernon Davis the “Catch III,” all Packers fans remember the Catch II – the Steve Young to Terrell Owens pitch and catch on the playoff game’s final play back in the late 1990s. Terrell Owens came off the field in tears, as did Davis after he made the catch last week.

A bit overdramatic to me … so I can understand why the Saints are feeling as blue as the Packers fans today.

Check out both posts. I think you will enjoy them.

It’s hump day, the middle of a week, but not just any ordinary week. It’s bye week for the Green Bay Packers, so I thought I would provide you with a few links to take a look at this morning that might brighten your view of an upcoming weekend without Packers football.

Not only do we have a story about T.O.’s workout yesterday where he held the party but nobody showed up, but we have a story about Mason Crosby’s recent success and why he probably deserved to be re-signed for the next five years, an inside look at how the Packers grading system keeps all players humble and honest, and a fun look at pictures of the 1965 Packers … one of the best Packers squads to ever hit the field.

So, enjoy. It won’t be long and we’ll be looking toward the big match-up between the Packers and Chargers next week.

It all comes after the jump.

The ink on the stories about Packers safety Nick Collins weren’t even dry yet when the first of several stories surfaced – one being from NFL Network’s Jason La Confora – asking the question about whether the Packers might be calling out the name of Darren Sharper as a replacement in the defensive backfield.

Sharper? Really?

The once adequate safety who played eight years in Green Bay before heading to Minnesota and then winning a Super Bowl ring in New Orleans wouldn’t be a good fit for the Packers. If the team is indeed reaching out to the aged one, I would quite frankly be shocked.

Yes, they now have a serious hole at the position that needs filling right now. Yes, there are some serious questions about who will fill that void – Jarrett Bush? Charlie Peprah? But to consider Sharper, who in his prime was just adequate, is preposterous in my mind.

Do you remember 4th and 26 and Sharper arriving late as the Eagles crushed the Packers Super Bowl hopes in 2003?

Do you remember The Catch II with Terrell Owens beating Sharper to the ball and the touchdown in that crushing playoff loss to the 49ers way back in the late 1990s?

I sure do … and I’m hoping I don’t have to relive anything like that again.

The Packers brass would be wise to stay far away on this one.

Here’s La Canfora’s story:

Dom Capers could be on to something with this 3-4 defense thing.

After the Packers preseason victory over the Cleveland Browns in which the new defense held the Browns to just 191 total yards, all systems look like a go. While defensive stalwarts Charles Woodson, Al Harris, and Nick Barnett did not play along with rookies Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji, plus Jeremy Thompson, the defense still looked good, limiting the Browns running game to just 59 yards on the ground.

The Packers offense was also hitting on all cylinders, as the first-team put up 14 points in the first quarter on a 53-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers to Donald Driver on a third down, and a two-yard run by Ryan Grant late in the first quarter. The running game put up an astounding 230 yards behind a thought to be suspect offensive line. Rookie running back Tyrell Sutton paced the team with 91 yards on 18 second half rushes. Kregg Lumpkin, who snuck onto the team in 2008 before suffering a season-ending injury, also have a productive night with 8 rushes for 48 yards.

Granted, this is the preseason, and this is the Cleveland Browns we’re talking about, but last night was a success. The players are becoming more comfortable in the 3-4 scheme and it showed results (although it was against the Cleveland Browns in the preseason). The most impressive part is the rushing defense. Fifty-nine yards is impressive no matter the circumstances. At various junctures of 2008, the Packers were just gashed by opposing running backs, so to see Jamal Lewis held to 17 yards on 7 carries.

The pass defense also held as well. Brett Ratliff, an Eric Mangini favorite from the New York Jets, was harrassed all day, as he was sacked three times and only completed 7 of 13 passes for 84 yards and two picks. Brady Quinn was 7-11 for 68 yards and a pick, while his main competition Derek Anderson was 0-2 with one interception. The 3-4 held against an offense it should have held against. Tramon Williams, Charlie Peprah, Anthony Smith, and Desmond Bishop had the interceptions for the Packers.

The most disconcerting aspect of the game was the fact that after two scores by the first team in the first quarter, the Packers didn’t score again the fourth quarter. Brian Brohm did not play well at all, as he was 3-10 for 18 yards and two picks and a fat passer rating of 0.0. He is looking more and more like trade bait for a veteran if he doesn’t keep improving. Matt Flynn was solid, however, completing 5 of 6 throws 50 yards, although he couldn’t find the end zone.

Sure, it’s preseason and you’re playing with second teamers, but you’re playing second teamers (the Cleveland Browns’ second teamers at that). There should be some offense generated by the offense that does have depth in the running game and the wide receivers. Where’s the production from Flynn and Brohm? Both are thought to be capable quarterbacks, but Brohm, who was projected as a high first-round pick had he left school after his junior year) has yet to live up to his potential and Flynn is playing like a third or fourth-round pick, as opposed to the seventh-round pick he is, which is a bit of a plus for the Packers. Could veteran leadership help solve this issue? Maybe. But then again, we’re talking about scoring points in the preseason against the Browns, so it could be a moot point.

Anyhow, the Packers have Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills this Saturday, and we’ll have to see how the defense reacts to a team thought to have a potentially explosive offense and see how the offense reacts to a defense that isn’t Cleveland’s.

We all know that Terrell Owens loves himself some TO. We also know now that TO likes himself some champagne, strawberries, hot tubs, and real estate agents.

TO’s new reality show on VH1, “The TO Show,” confirms everything we already knew about the Buffalo Bills wide receiver. He’s selfish, likes to be the center of attention, and doesn’t really listen to anyone else. The pilot episode last night centered around TO’s two publicists (who I refer to as his “handlers”), Kita and Monique trying to change TO’s image from TO to Terrell. I don’t think giving the entire world a look into the life of one the biggest divas in NFL history was the best move.

Apparently, the show is supposed to show a different side of TO. What it does is show the viewers that TO is exactly the same at home as he is out in public. He pays up $137,000 for diamond earrings. He invites an entire club back to his house for a party. He hooks up with his real estate agent in his hot tub. On the field, he always wants the ball. Off the field, he always the attention.

The show also seems painfully calculated. He is forced by his handlers to contact his ex-fiance to see how she is doing. When TO meets with her, he dodges her questions about his love life, a la Drew Rosenhaus. He had to have learned it somewhere. TO didn’t want to go meet with her. He is forced into it by his handlers and he makes it clear he doesn’t want to do what they tell him. It’s hard to imagine that Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb, and Tony Romo know how Kita and Mo feel.

The show did have one interesting part which, surprisingly, pertained to football. In one scene, TO sits down with his best friend Pablo, a large dude that cuts rank farts on the LA freeways, and divulges how his meeting with Jerry Jones went when Jones told TO that he was no longer a member of the Dallas Cowboys. The reasoning that TO says Jones used makes perfect sense: I support you 100%, so I’m going to cut you. Jones’ method of drawing a diagram on a tablecloth is original to say the least. The show becomes even more amusing when TO describes waiting around so he could take the tablecloth with him after the meeting.

The advent of “The T.O. Show” has to be a low point in the history of reality TV shows. If TO’s handlers want to “change the man,” as is their mantra throughout the show, then they should take my advice: get him out of the spotlight. The less there is of TO, the more people like him. The last thing that will change people’s opinions about him is seeing him in his cushy personal life still being TO. As a closet Philadelphia Eagles fan, the disdain factor for TO just reaches the ridiculous. If TO wasn’t already a joke to people before, he has definitely surpassed that now. If he was already a joke to people, he has pushed himself totally out of the radar.

Dick Jauron and Trent Edwards, study up. Using this show as film on how to deal with TO could come in more handy than any other games tapes you have on him.

You can watch the episode here.

After the Packers pick, San Francisco and Buffalo come on the clock, looking for mostly defensive help for their teams.

With the tenth pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Everette Brown, OLB, Florida State.

The 49ers have various needs this offseason, but unlike what some people are predicting, a first round QB is not one of those needs. The 49ers have a pair of outside linebackers, one of whom turned in a very solid season in 2008. Parys Haralson seems to have a legitimate future going forward as a pass rushing outside linebacker. Manny Lawson is an athletic freak, but he seems less inclined to rush the passer or more likely to be a guy in coverage and in a read position.

Although Everette Brown didn’t have a ton of experience (only one season as a fulltime starter), he still racked up 23 sacks for his 3-year career. This pick is a really tough one for the 49ers because it seems like they’re too high for guys like [Michael] Oher, but they’re too low for a BJ Raji. Andre Smith is plummeting and seems like too much of a headcase. If the first 9 picks go in the above order, I think the 49ers will battle themselves in trying to decide between Michael Oher and Everette Brown. What wouldn’t surprise me is if the 49ers tried to move up from the second round into the late first round to grab the right tackle they need. They’ve shown no qualms about making those kinds of moves, so we’ll see if they do so again.

With the eleventh overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select…
Clay Matthews, OLB, USC
Buffalo is in full-fledged “win now” mode. Let’s face it – you’re not risking Terrell Owens being on your roster if you’re not desperate for a few wins. Unlike the ’08 draft, when the Bills took small-school product Leodis McKelvin and unpolished receiver James Hardy with their first two picks, the Bills are going to look past potential for guys that can contribute immediately, particularly in the first three rounds.

Unfortunately, the team is forced to choose between prospects at this stage in the game that either aren’t worthy of a selection this high (Brandon Pettigrew) or fill needs but are inexperienced (Matthews, Aaron Maybin). In the end, Matthews – yes, even ahead of USC teammate Brian Cushing – is the best fit. He gives the Bills an outstanding blitz presence right out of the gate, and he adds playmaking ability to the Bills’ league-renowned special teams unit as well.

Matthews isn’t a perfect fit in Buffalo’s zone-based scheme; his coverage skills are severely underdeveloped, and it’s unclear whether he’d be a better fit as a linebacker or an end in a 4-3 defense. In Buffalo, he’d have the opportunity to play a little of both. Buffalo desperately needs a physical, hard-hitting presence at linebacker for run downs, and the 6’3″, 240-pound Matthews can lay the lumber. But he also opened some eyes at the Combine when he easily recorded the fastest 10-yard split of any pass-rushing prospect; his 1.49-second time was beaten by only nine cornerbacks. He’s very explosive in the short area, and given that fact, he also has potential as a pass-rush specialist – either standing or down on the line – for the blitz-happy Bills. His work ethic, intangibles and unbelievable NFL bloodlines make him a safe investment, even if he’s a bit of a reach.

The Denver Broncos are on the clock.

Eleven picks down…

The Packers should not sign former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owen. I’ve already said that. But is everyone else saying?

OK, all those who think the Packers should go after Owens raise your hands. OK, those who have your hands up, bring them down and slap yourself in the face because it will never happen. Any thoughts on who will be the next team Owens destroys?

–Tom Silverstein, Packers daily briefing 03.05.09

Green Bay: The Packers already have a strong situation at receiver with Greg Jennings and Donald Driver. Why risk that chemistry and production by adding Owens? More to the point, what about general manager Ted Thompson‘s approach suggests he would seek out a 35-year-old receiver? The Packers haven’t made an impact signing on the free agent market in three years, and it’s hard to imagine Owens changing that trend.

Yes, Packers fans, I already see the wheels turning in some of the heads of you Packers fans. The team in no way should mess with the cancer that is Terrell Owens. The receiver, recently released by the Dallas Cowboys, is out on the streets looking for work.

Could the Packers use Owens?

Not really.

The team already has Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones, and Jordy Nelson. That’s four receivers that are all serviceable. Jennings is an up-and-coming superstar, Driver is a serviceable veteran, Jones could definitely become the second receiver if he improves, and Nelson is young, big, and fast. Where does Owens fit in this? He doesn’t. Sure, if the team wanted to go with the Big 5 again, it could work, but Ryan Grant figures to play a bigger role in the offense in 2009 than he did in 2008, lessening to the need for another wide receiver. TO could make Aaron Rodgers better, as he provides a big and physical target, while Jennings is more vertical and Driver is smaller. But would Rodgers really want to deal with a cancerous TO after dealing with the Brett Favre drama from his first three years in the league.

Plus, Owens doesn’t fit in with the Ted Thompson-Mike McCarthy free agent philosophy, which is to get young bargains. Would they really want to pay a somewhat substantial amount for a 35-year-old that has more mouth skills than ball skills? Nah, I don’t think so.

Arrowhead Addict has their own prediction of where TO will end up, and it makes perfect sense. Could we see TO lining up from everyone’s favorite Javon Walker next year?

Could the Packers go after Baltimore Ravens stalwart middle linebacker Ray Lewis to help revamp their defense to their new 3-4 scheme?

With the news today about Lewis calling DeMarcus Ware for Jerry Jones‘ phone number, Lewis looks primed to end up with the Dallas Cowboys (or as I like to call it, “The Land of Tools,” where Lewis definitely belongs).

However, that doesn’t mean we can’t look at the possibility of Lewis coming to Green Bay. The Packers need a leader. It had always been Brett Favre‘s locker room, but that ship has sailed. Aaron Rodgers leads more by example than vocally, along with Donald Driver and most of the offense. Nick Barnett and Al Harris are the closest thing the Packers have to a Lewis-esque player, but the same passion and fire equated with Lewis is not the first thing you think of when you think of them.

Lewis also knows the ins and outs of a 3-4 defense from Rex Ryan‘s scheme in Baltimore. Lewis’ knowledge of that scheme also makes the New York Jets a possible destination for him and Ravens teammate Jim Leonhard. Lewis can help the younger players of the Packers defense, Barnett, Aaron Kampman, and A.J. Hawk, among others, learn the defense in its most legitimate form. Lewis would be able to guide the locker room and work well with the team and give an edge to the team. He would be a little pricey, but Ted Thompson has plenty of cap space. Adding Ray Lewis to the Packers could only help the team on the field.

Now, why Ray Lewis on the Packers would not a good fit. The first thing that comes to my mind is an adjective another football fan used when describing Lewis: delusional. In terms of appearing as a me-first player (note I said “appearing,” not “being”), Lewis ranks up there with Terrell Owens in terms of pointless showmanship. “The Squirrel?” Gag me. Please. Seriously Ray, that got old seven years ago. I’d a put a stipulation in his contract saying he buries “The Squirrel” next to Edgar Allan Poe in Baltimore. And this showmanship goes from pre-game to in-game. Yes Ray, I’m glad your enthusiastic the running back was held to a routine three yard gain, but the thing is, you didn’t make the tackle. I don’t see why that dance is necessary when Haloti Ngata made the stop.

Lewis’ off-the-field antics (no, I’m not talking about being implicated in stabbings during Super Bowl XXXIV) also rub me the wrong way. Saying his contract situation was “between me and God” shows that he’s not willing to show Baltimore what he’s thinking. Also, the fact that all the information about him is coming out through other players like Ware, instead of out of his mouth really makes you wonder what he’s thinking. When the offseason started, I could definitely see him staying in Baltimore, but the way he has acted since then makes me really wonder what his motives and wants are. The Packers don’t need someone who isn’t going to be upfront with the organization about what they want to do. We just went through six years of the offseason soap opera that was Brett Favre. We don’t Ray Lewis discussing his contract situation with God instead of Ozzie Newsome. Last time I checked, Newsome writes the checks to the players, unless owner Steve Bisciotti pulled off one of the biggest coups in NFL history in getting God to be his GM.

Lewis’ age also plays against him in signing with Green Bay. The middle linebacker turns 34 in May, and, despite having one of his greatest seasons, should not be counted on to duplicate his performance in Green Bay. The Packers just do not have the same defensive talent available in Baltimore. Lewis played behind space-eaters Ngata, Trevor Pryce, and Justin Bannan on the Ravens, players specifically built for the 3-4. In Green Bay, the defensive tackles and defensive ends are severely undersized and help is expected to come through the draft. Due to his age and personnel, Lewis would not be able to produce in Green Bay the same way he does in Baltimore. This is enough to not pursue him in free agency.

Just because the Packers can’t have one Baltimore linebacker doesn’t mean they can’t have another. Bart Scott is set to hit the free agent market next Thursday and looks to have numerous suitors. The Ravens again placed the franchise tag on Terrell Suggs, keeping him in Baltimore for another year, and they desperately want Lewis, the face of their franchise and “The Original Raven,” back. This flurry of activity leaves Scott out in the cold, despite the fact he said he would take a discount to return to Baltimore.

I don’t think the Ravens would lose too, too much sleep over losing Scott. They have Tarvares Gooden and Antwan Barnes behind him on the depth chart, and it seems like anyone who goes into that scheme comes out a star. At 28, Scott is in his prime and is experienced. I was impressed by his behavior during the 2008 season. There were no outbursts like the infamous penalty flag-throw to cost the Ravens the game against the New England Patriots in 2007. Instead, Scott played his inside linebacker position how he was supposed to and reaped the benefits. Scott’s numbers have decreased since his career-high 103 tackles in 2006, but the Ravens have had numerous other members of their defense emerge during that time.

I think Scott would be a great signing for the Packers. He would team with Barnett to give the Packers two intense inside linebackers. With Barnett coming off of major knee surgery, Scott would also give them security if Barnett can’t go at full strength from Day One. Scott seems to be at a great place in his career and could bring some swagger to a Green Bay locker room that could use it.

Ted, open up the checkbook.

Side Note: The Julius Peppers plan is terminated. No sense getting him from the Carolina Panthers right now. Way too expensive. Also, Kampman is moving to the outside linebacker spot Peppers would occupy, and that would be too much of a good thing right there.

The Packers secondary is undersiege by the injury bug. It doesn’t seem like there’s anyway around it. The entire starting secondary plus some backups are listed on the injury report this week.

Despite having five defensive backs on the injury report, only one, corner Al Harris, is expected to miss Sunday’s game at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Harris is out until God-knows-when because of a spleen injury. Charles Woodson is listed on the injury report with his broken toe, which he played with and performed admirably on Sunday night. Atari Bigby, who missed Sunday’s game, is not expected to play Sunday with a hamstring injury, but there is the slight chance he could play. The starting safeties look like they will be Nick Collins, who suffered a lower back injury, and Aaron Rouse, who is also banged up.

Tramon Williams looks to see major action, starting in place of Harris on Sunday while backup corner Jarrett Bush could see time at safety and at the nickel corner spot. Tampa Bay’s starting wide receivers are Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, a tandem that doesn’t strike the same fear into the heart of a fan as Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton. The secondary does gain a bit of a break, but expected them to be tested early as Bucs quarterback Brian Griese threw the ball 60+ times for over 400 yards against the Chicago Bears.

Tonight the marquee matchup of the first three weeks of the season occurs with Dallas Cowboys headed to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers. This is the only game in Week 3 between two 2-0 teams. Because The Landry Hat has accused me of blatant homerism, I have decided to divide this blog up into two sections: the down-to-earth, level-headed section (although nothing is ever level-headed with the Cowboys) and the mildly homeristic section. Enjoy it.

The Level-Headed Section:

Both teams, as stated before, are 2-0. The Cowboys have achieved their record by dispatching the Cleveland Browns 28-10 on opening weekend before winning a 41-37 shootout over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. The Packers have taken a slightly easier road to 2-0, defeating a highly touted Minnesota Vikings team on the Monday Night Football opener, 24-19, although the lead was not safe until a timely Tarvaris Jackson interception in the final minutes, and a 48-25 win over the Detroit Lions in which the Packers squandered a 24-9 lead in the second half before pulling away thanks to the defense.

The Cowboys are currently the class of the NFC according to many sources (I mostly agree), and they have played like it, despite the scare on Monday night. The Packers were picked by most prognosticators to finish 8-8 or 9-7, due to the loss of longtime quarterback Brett Favre, traded to the New York Jets. However, fourth-year man Aaron Rodgers has stepped up admirably in his first two starts as the Packers quarterback. After a cautious Week 1, Mike McCarthy loosened the leash on Rodgers a bit, and Rodgers responded with three touchdown passes in the first half. McCarthy left the pass in the second half, which allowed the Lions to get back into the game. Rodgers is not stranger to playing against the Cowboys on the big stage either; last November, Rodgers relieved an injured Favre and led the Packers on a comeback before losing to the Cowboys, 37-27.

The two main keys for the Packers in this game is the secondary and the running game. The secondary in the 2007 game was severely depleted with Charles Woodson out with a toe injury. Woodson broke another toe in the Minnesota game, but saved the game against Detroit, playing through pain with two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. It looked like the Packers passing defense would be back at full strength this week, but starting safety Atari Bigby is out with a hamstring injury, meaning that second-year man Aaron Rouse will probably get the start opposite Nick Collins. Bigby had more of an impact in the running game, but his big-hitter presence in the backfield will be missed. Also a cause for concern was Calvin Johnson‘s play last weekend. The Lions star wide receiver took two nearly identical slant patterns for touchdowns last week. You have to bet that Jason Garrett, Tony Romo, and Terrell Owens were looking at that one. On the other side of the ball, the Packers need running back Ryan Grant to be at full strength to be successful. He has been nursing a hamstring injury for some time, and was definitely hobbled by it on Sunday, rushing for only 20 yards on 15 carries. Brandon Jackson looked at least fifty times better against the Lions than he did against the Vikings, chewing up over 60 yards on seven carries and scoring the clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter. Hopefully he will be able to perform at that level against a tough Cowboys defense.

The Cowboys are a tough defense. Their secondary will provide a stiff test for the Packers wide receiving corps. Terence Newman, Anthony Henry, Adam Jones, and safety Ken Hamlin will be busy with Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, and James Jones, but something has to give. It will depend on whether or not Rodgers can get the ball out quickly to the wide receivers. In last year’s game, Favre held the ball too long, giving the Cowboys time to get the receivers covered and giving the Cowboys pass rush time to get extra hits on him as well. If Rodgers stays composed, he can be successful. If he doesn’t, well, he won’t be successful. He already has one national TV appearance under his belt, so the pressure of that should not get to him.

In August, I picked the Cowboys to win this one, 38-24. However, things change. Like the score. That being said, my level-headedness is picking the Cowboys, 38-34.

Homerism

Tony Romo. Seriously. Can this guy win a big game? He almost blew it for the Cowboys on Monday night against the Eagles. He’s basically screwed the Cowboys up in the playoffs the last two years. National television isn’t totally kind to him. The easiest way for the Packers to win is to make Romo make mistakes. If Romo makes one more mistake than Rodgers does, the Packers have the win. Romo will make that mistake too. He’ll sail one too high on Owens. He’ll hold the ball too long in the pocket and get swallowed up by Aaron Kampman. Something will happen that will give the Packers a chance to win. Being the opportunists they are, they will take advantage of that and turn it into a win. Woodson is hungry after his two interceptions last week. Al Harris is out to prove he is still a shut down corner after being humiliated last year by Owens and in the NFC Championship Game by Plaxico Burress. The Packers are obviously really hungry this year. They were supposed to cede the division crown to the Vikings. They weren’t supposed to get anywhere with their quarterback. They want to prove the doubters wrong. The Packers will prevail. 34-27.

Is Jessica going to be at this game?

Also, what’s the over/under for how many times John Madden and Al Michaels mention Favre? I’m saying 27 before halftime. And I’m taking over 40 for the game.

Any takers?

The Green Bay Packers almost lost to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. I thank God for the word “almost” right there. How close can a 48-25 game get? Very close apparently. At my 2:30 PM Update, the Packers were up 21-3 at the half and it seemed like they were in control. I even speculated that Matt Flynn could see some action. Funny how things change when you stop paying attention. As soon as I found a phone conversation about the Indianapolis Colts‘ 18-15 come-from-behind-victory over the hated Minnesota Vikings more interesting than watching arrows move back and forth on GameCenter, I lost touch with the game. I saw the final later and just assumed the Packers had mopped the floor with the Lions.

To quote Lee Corso, “Not so fast, my friend.”

I watched the highlights to the game and was absolutely horrified. In the fourth quarter, while sitting on a 24-9 lead, the Packers unraveled. First, Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson turned a quick slant route into a 38-yard touchdown, Packers punter Derrick Frost mishandled a punt, leading to a Lions safety.

It’s 24-18. Like BOOM.

Then deja vu struck again when Johnson turned a nearly identical pass from Jon Kitna into a touchdown, this time from 47-yards out.

25-24, Lions.

If I was watching this game, I would have been flipping out. But I was totally oblivious to this happening. So no harm, no foul. Keeps my stress levels down.

Then the Packers start working their magic. The retook the lead on the ensuing drive on a Mason Crosby field goal, 27-25. Then the fun began.

On the next Lions drive, Charles Woodson intercepted Kitna, setting up Brandon Jackson‘s best rush of the season, a 19-yarder for the score and a 34-25 lead. Woodson showed some skills AGAIN on the next drive, intercepting Kitna and taking the ball to the barn. 41-25, Packers. Kitna’s last six minutes at the office got even worse as on the next drive he was intercepted YET AGAIN, this time by Nick Collins, who followed to trend set by Woodson and took it to the house. 48-25, Packers.

Game, set, match.

The fact the Lions were able to get back into this one really scares me. Woodson and Al Harris need to be on top of their game with Tony Romo, Terrell Owens, and the rest of the Dallas Cowboys coming into town next Sunday.

In other news, Aaron Rodgers continued his development as a starting quarterback, absolutely owning up on the Lions defense (statistically, at least). Rodgers completed 24 of 38 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns, giving him his first 300-yard passing game and first three-touchdown game. The guy looks good. His first touchdown pass to James Jones was a great scramble, while his third touchdown pass to rookie Jordy Nelson was absolutely beautiful. Greg Jennings lead the receiving department with 167 yards on six catches, including two catches of more than 50 yards. Donald Driver had seven catches and one touchdown. In the rushing department, Jackson actually led the team, a 180-degree turn from Week 1, with 61 yards on seven carries including the touchdown. Ryan Grant was bottled up, partly by a hamstring injury, gaining only 20 yards on 15 carries. He will need to be at full strength for the Dallas game. On defense, A.J. Hawk is not showing any ill-effects of his chest injury, recording seven tackles and two sacks. The defense did a good job shutting down Kevin Smith‘s running game, but they were absolutely torched by Johnson, who had six receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns. The disgruntled Roy Williams was held to three catches for 48 yards.

Dallas is next. This will be a tough one.

Week 3
Sunday, September 21, 2008
Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers
8:15 PM ET
NBC (I’m assuming)

Week 3 appears to be one of the biggest games on the schedules for the Packers. Last year the Packers went down the Irving, Texas (wait, I thought they played in Dallas?) to meet the Cowboys in a battle of 10-1 teams. Many thought this game would be a preview of the NFC Championship Game later in the season. Unfortunately not, as the Cowboys blew the divisional playoff game against the eventual Super Bowl-champion New York Giants. The Cowboys started out fast and the Packers could not keep up, with the Cowboys taking the 37-27 victory and eventually control of the No. 1-seed in the NFC. Not that it helped them, of course. This game also gave Packer fans a taste of the future. Former Packers quarterback Brett Favre suffered an elbow injury early in the game, paving the way for Aaron Rodgers to bring the Packers to within three points before the Pack Attack eventually succumbed.

This game showed that Rodgers could (hopefully) handle the pressure of being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Other than that and some shifting on the Cowboys offensive line, both teams return with basically identical lineups. This game will be exciting and it will be interesting to see how Rodgers responds in his second nationally-televised game in three weeks. This will also be the first time John Madden broadcasts a Packers game that does not have Favre as the starter in 16 years. I’m setting the over/under on Favre references at 20. And I’m taking over. Will Madden follow the ESPN approach and just bash, bash, and bash the Packers and Rodgers? Or will he be rational? I’m saying he’ll bash, but less than ESPN would. Let’s get to the keys to this game:

Packers secondary vs. Cowboys wide receivers: In November, the Packers were torn apart by Tony Romo and the Cowboys air attack, as any or most Cowboys fans will be quick to tell you. However, a large of group people are forgetting that Packers starter Charles Woodson missed this game with a toe injury, leaving Al Harris to fight Terrell Owens on his own. This also led to botched coverages by Tramon Williams, Jarrett Bush, and whoever the hell else was back there on Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, and possibly Sam Hurd. Putting Woodson back there changes the landscape of the secondary and makes it more difficult for Romo. The safety trio of Atari Bigby, Aaron Rouse, and Nick Collins will also be counted on to bring the hammer down on the Cowboys wide receivers. If Green Bay controls the secondary, they control most of the game.

Packers O-line vs. Cowboys front seven: Favre was absolutely wrecked last year in the pocket in this game. Actually, there probably never was a pocket for most of it. The four- and five-wide receiver sets that made the Packers so dangerous down the stretch worked to a disadvantage has Favre held on to the ball too long and allowed the Cowboys to bring an extra rusher, making him force some of his classic throws. The Packers need their O-line to develop for this game. Mike McCarthy does not want Rodgers on his back with Greg Ellis, DeMarcus Ware, and Zach Thomas on top of him for most of this one. Veterans Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher will be counted on again to hold down the fort while the mess that is the interior line gets settled and hopefully gels for this game. The Packers are also going to have to open up running lanes for Ryan Grant. Grant got in one good run last year against the Cowboys, but was stymied for the rest of the game. They Packers got to get him going to take pressure off the passing game.

Cowboys secondary vs. Packers wide receivers and Aaron Rodgers: The Cowboys also revamped their secondary this offseason. They locked up Terrence Newman and Ken Hamlin in the offseason, while Anthony Henry and Roy Williams (a glorified linebacker) return to the fold. The additions are what makes this group key. Mike Jenkins was a first-round draft pick in the 2008 NFL Draft while Adam Jones (aka Pacman), if reinstated, gives the Cowboys a dangerous secondary for Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, and James Jones to contend with. This game will turn very physical, so the Packers will definitely need big wide receivers Ruvell Martin and rookie Jordy Nelson to step up and become factors. Rodgers will need these guys to get open in order to be successful.

The Verdict: There’s so many more keys to this game than the ones mentioned. The Cowboys really look like they are gearing up for a Super Bowl run this year and they seem to have the mindset for it, so the Cowboys get the nod, 38-24.

The Packers are now 2-1 after Week 3.

When Green Bay traveled to San Francisco to play the San Francisco 49ers in the past, it was always a duel between Brett Favre and Steve Young. These two teams played some great games: the 1998 NFL Championship Game, which the Packers won to play the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII and the 1999 NFC Wild-Card Game where Terrell Owens made “The Catch II” in front of four Packers defenders from Young after the refs totally botched a Jerry Rice fumble call. That game almost cost me a friendship as my mom stupidly made me wear my new Young jersey to school the next day, and my best friend who was also a Packers fan was offended. Luckily, time heals most wounds.

But now the two teams are in different directions. Green Bay is breaking in a new quarterback, while San Francisco is still trying to find the successor for Young. Ironically, Aaron Rodgers could be in San Francisco. In the days leading up to the 2005 NFL Draft, the 49ers were torn between Rodgers and Alex Smith. They chose Smith No. 1, letting Rodgers free-fall all the way down to #24 where Ted Thompson snatched him up. Rodgers got the job of holding the clipboard for Favre for three years before getting his chance. Smith was thrown into the fire Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Smith has gone through three offensive coordinators in three years and is now on his fourth in Mike Martz. Rodgers had to deal with the Favre debacle. Smith is now competing with J.T. O’Sullivan and Shaun Hill for the starting quarterback position. Rodgers is the man in Green Bay.

Yeah, tough cookies Alex.

Anyway, five things to watch for in tonight’s game:

1. The aforementioned storyline between Smith and Rodgers. Yes, I know it’s preseason, but I’ll take any storyline not involving Favre I can get.

2. The battle for the backup running back. As I mentioned yesterday, the battle for third-string running back is heating up. Ryan Grant is not expected to play, so Brandon Jackson, Vernand Morency, and Noah Herron should see the majority of the carries and a chance to show what they can do.

3. The 49ers defense. They’ve spent loads of cash on this lately, so let’s see if the cash will come through for them.

4. The Packers defense. The Packers defense is going to have to do more work than they did last season with the offense in transition, so it should be interesting to see how they feast on a pretty weak offense.

5. The battle for backup quarterback. Brian Brohm was thought to have this job locked up as soon as he was drafted, but fellow rookie Matt Flynn has impressed coaches and is expected to challenge Brohm. Intriguing.

I’m not going to be able to watch this game, but good luck to the Packers. I’ll have a report on it tomorrow.
