Round 1: John Ross, WR, Washington (5-foot-11, 190 pounds)

On the surface, this may look like a luxury pick for the Packers, but digging a little deeper it becomes clear Ross could fill a hole that’s plagued Green Bay’s offense for years. At this point in his career, Ross does one thing better than anything else – use his speed to take the top off a defense.

No other Packers receiver does this – not Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb or Davante Adams. Ross’ deep speed and Aaron Rodgers‘ ability to throw accurately down the field would open up everything underneath for Nelson, Cobb and Adams to roam, and it would give the Packers’ offense an instant downfield threat, something that has been missing for years.

And looking back at Thompson’s best draft picks, he tends to hit on value picks more than when he picks for need. Rodgers, Nelson, Clay Matthews, Cobb – those were best-available-player picks that didn’t address specific needs. Ross could be the next in line.
